What I like about both Gladiator Movies is how Ridley really played around with the history... So people spend a couple of hours watching his movie, then weeks on TH-cam finding out the real stories and personalities.
Not long ago, I was disturbed with movies that claimed to be, “based on a true story.” “The Social Network,” and, “Moneyball,” come to mind. I was wrong to expect a documentary examination in a film meant to entertain. Hollywood has the right to dramatic license. Later, I remembered miniseries broadcast on CBS that ended with an actor encouraging the audience to, “learn more.” I remembered seeing movies on DVD and how I spent as much time watching the “Special Features,” as I did watching the movie. That helped quell my resentment. I often say that one of the things I give President-elect Trump credit for is his highlighting, “fake news.” What Mr. Trump is doing is challenging us to consider our sources and critically evaluating the information we receive to the point of doing our own research to hew at the truth.
So basically if you're not totally ignorant about ancient Rome then just stay home and don't waste you money on a trip to fantasy island. As if most of TH-cam is even capable of conveying the truth about these made up stories made up personalities. I think I'll just skip it.
Really good and informative video. I watched yesterday and liked the video you did on Marcrinus too. So I may end up having to subscribe to your channel now or soon and look forward to more from you 👍🏼 I think what the first commenter said hit things right on the head too about not only Ridley Scott, but a lot of directors and/or writers in movies and even some shows based on real life events. Romanticizing and/or expanding on actual truths of said stories so not only more people will watch, but so they can then deep dive on what from the story is actually factual or fantasized and/or made up. They even do it in biopics too and why a lot of times it will have warnings of it being loosely based on real life events. It is with a lot of books and artists of music and other aspects of media as well. That is why a lot of time when I see something I like to research before and/or after I watch it. Btw I hope you do more on some of the other characters from Gladiator II as well which I really enjoyed and saw an early screening of last Tuesday with my Mom. That was somewhat emotional in certain parts cause it was a couple days after what would have been my Dad’s 62nd birthday (R.I.P. 🙏🏼) who unfortunately passed a little over 4 1/2 years ago.

That’s very kind of you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I will actually be doing more content on connections between Ancient Rome, and African civilisations, something I want to explore more.
SPOILER ALERT 🚨 It’s just a twist they made in the movie, somehow Lucilla, had an affair with Maximus at some point in the past, but it’s not clear when exactly. That’s why maximus cared about Lucius in the first movie. So in the film his biological dad was maximus, but everyone thought his dad was Lucius versus…
It was made up story. In reality, Lucius co-reigned with Marcus Aurelius adopted by their father. Lucilla married Lucius. Lucius died early at 38 by smallpox.
@@HistoryLeaks I am mulling over whether to see it. For example, when you see Caracalla an dGeta - er,they weren't caucasian, they were African... I mean, not an auspicious start...
I mean, it's Hollywood, you know they have to change up some stuff to make the story interesting. Otherwise, it would be boring if they did it like it really was.
@@tubucoco no,doesn't have to be that way. You still get all the political intrigue and blood and gore keeping it reasonably historically accurate as that was a staple of Roman life. See the Rome series to see how it can be done.
Lucius definitely liked to have a good time, party animal for sure with a love of gambling. But that was the case with most Romans at the time. Marcus A. was the exception to the rule, but I beleive he must have respected Lucius enough to insist they ruled together, which says something about Lucius V. character, he wasn’t solely a spoiled party animal, it was a problem and hindered him, but he must have brought something to the table otherwise why would Marcus A. Insist on ruining with him?
@ your opinion is poorly reasoned and not logical. just because MAurelius tolerated Lucius does not mean “[Lucius] brought something to the table.” That is pure speculation. On the other hand, Lucius is not included in the “5 good emperors.” And thus is ‘literally’ not a good emperor.

Hahah yeah that’s a good point, TH-camrs colluding with Ridley Scott what a genius idea 😂

Nah, it's much simpler than that. They know what sells and how to stretch the truth so that everybody feels included in today's world.

I watched the movie last night and thinking to rewatch the first movie due to the same question.
It was made up story. In reality, Lucius co-reigned with Marcus Aurelius adopted by their father. Lucilla married Lucius. Lucius died early at 38 by smallpox.
@@AquarianQueen67 exactly right
In the first one they had a past relationship and once loved each other. although, they didn't really elaborate on it.
Great Story
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it! 💯🙏
So Ridley Scott just made up the whole thing. This is nuts.
Lucius verus 2 is portrayed as Maximus's son in Gladiator 2.
I am disappointed that SPENCER TREAT CLARK was not brought back to play LUCIUS.
Hah yeah, Paul Mescal wasnt THAT great so they might as well have brought him back
A good run down of the real events - most of which I knew. When I first saw Gladiator,my first reaction was WTF.But,it is hollywood,so....
Thank you - glad you enjoyed it, there were quite a few WTF moments in Gladiator II I agree! but I enjoyed it overall 💯🫡

Why does kid Lucius (the one in the thumbnail) look like Barron Trump

The best dam fictional character you ever seen!! Lol 😂
This isn’t very accurate. Lucius was a spoiled party animal by all accounts. And let Marcus Aurelius do everything (including telling him what to do).
