Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his TH-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

I was watching this video for a second time this evening. When you mentioned that replacement pawls are hard to find I remembered that the Akron has an extra replacement pawl under the screwhead above the arbor tensioning cap on the crank side. Most people don't know about that. Take a look under that screw head. There still may be a replacement pawl in there. I emailed you a photo of it.

That version had the tool steel worm gear. Yours is in fine shape. Teeth, esp at ends, are intact. Can superglue a leather disc to the AB post too if needed.
The spool end caps are there to slightly tension the spool evenly from each end. The spool should sit evenly and proper tension allows just a bit of side to side movement of the spool. They should not be used for casting tension. Thats the job of the AB post and/or one’s thumb.

Of all the vintage baitcasting reels the Pflueger Akron is my favorite. it's a very smooth operating reel, and I can sling my bait out forty yards even with a steel fishing rod. I use fifteen pound braided nylon line on my Akron.

Dan, I don’t think I’ve ever fished on before but it is a nice little reel. I’d love to see you catch one of those big carp on one.

Those old phluger reels are nice to work on. I have the summitt and it casts beautifully. An can honestly say I never busted my knuckles with it.
    Nice work!

I have a newer Pfleuger version of this type reel inherited from my Mother.. It's Skilkast # 1953. do you think you might do a service/disassembly video on that one? The drag mechanism seems to be a little challenging, with little bitty parts. It has an aluminum line spool, so it's a "newer" version of the 1953.

Greg, I don’t have one to make the video from. If you want, you could send it to me. I’ll service it and make a video and send it back. That way, in the future, you would always have the video, to go back and do it yourself. If that idea appeals to you, contact me at my email address.

Wellllllll, unfortunately (for me), I already did the "ten year old takes apart his watch" thing. I have some loose parts that I don't know how to get back together. I had a "Christmas Story" moment when the snap ring/spring flew out of the drag barrel and I saw the nearly microscopic ball bearings inside. All I saw was a glint of metal when it flew out, and initially thought ball bearings went flying. I did find a photo on another site showing the parts, but not the sequence of assembly. Good thing, as I thought that spring was some random junk while searching the floor and table for ball bearings I thought went flying. At least I'm somewhat relieved that I don't THINK anything is missing.@@youngmartinsreels5314

Is 1893 the model name or the year?

Model number. Definitely not the date of manufacture.
