    Just had another look at this Nick, I watched it back when I was buying my Daiwas, my 3500 has been abused, underwater, in the rain on top of my car, and it needs a little lovin'. Great video, I know what I'm doing this morning.

    It's so awesome to have these detailed teardown's when in the market for reels. I strip mine down each year for cleaning and it's nice to see how they are designed internally. Have you considered doing a video at some point of all the different tools, lubes, oils, and cleaners you prefer for your reel maintenance?

    Thanks for your video. On late December bought my first Daiwa bg4000, loved it so much I bought a 4500 last week. Today was my third time fishing my 4000 and felt a little difficult to crank the reel, did not feel smooth and soft as the first time. I really appreciate your comments and guide to what could be the problem, considering is a new reel.

      I refuse to go higher than a 5K in this series which the 5000 is definitely on the heavy side in weight itself. Honestly, if memory serves me right the 4500/5000 are very similar in weight if not the same. That being said, I myself have a 3K, 3500H, two 4Ks, and a 5K, didn’t pay over $100 on any some were new and they don’t just catch fish, if you use em right they handle em. 💪

      I have several old silver series reels that I've used for DECADES, and I will say without question that even though they aren't as smooth or sophisticated as these modern reels, they will easily outlast them with proper maintenance. I've gotten rid of some of my modern reels because they've turned out to be junk. Just my experience and opinion.

    • @christopherjenkins2373
      @christopherjenkins2373 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Belvedere3834spd I think your experience and opinion are spot on! I was talking to a friend a minute ago about fishing with our 1950s vintage large Luxor No. 3 reels. To me there have been only a very few reels built since those Luxors that even have a chance at competing with them. Just this afternoon I got a mint Mitchell 498 Super. PPUM saltwater reel you simply can’t believe. I also just finished together a beautiful Mitchell 396 from parts and put on a NOS gray spool and Mitchell high speed handle. That reel can cast better than almost any modern reel. I know I’m extremely biased but I see no need to purchase modern reels even with their extraordinary features when I know they have no chance of standing the rest of time. My negative feelings and bad experiences with modern reels started with a Quantum Cabo Saltwater Reel that I bought for a lot of money that didn’t last 5 years. This was in spite of the fact that I meticulously take care of my reels. Never again!

    Can't find the comment but I asked you about a slight noise at the bottom of the spool cycle and you said it could be a bent spool shaft. You were correct I replaced the spool shaft and low and behold it was butter yet again. 6500 size and it's so easy to work on given the larger parts. Not than any reels are rocket science contrary to some TH-cam reviewers who don't even open them up. Still not sure how someone can "test a reel" let's say without knowing how it works.

      @@TackleAdvisors I used it as an anchor rod and reel off a pier for a trolley/pin rig and I'm pretty sure I bent it trying to get the 8oz anchor weight to budge. Wasn't smart but I don't own a cheap round reel to heave out there. Most guys use old Abu 6500 type reels and I saw two AR's give out on the same day.

    Great video! Thanks Tackle Advisors.
    But... I've just opened up my new 2500 for some preventive maintenance and found out that there are small differences between models. There can be a washer at the screw holding the case-bumper (at 16:20) sitting between the bumper and the case. It's not shown here nor in the shematics but both my 1500 and 2500 have it. The top cap covering the A-R clutch at 17:20 can sit on two tiny brass washers not shown in this video. There is also an arrow on the top cap that needs to point upwards > towards the foot of the reel. So beware and keep a REALLY close eye on all the parts in your particular model.

    Just wanted to personally thank you for this video as I had a bearing retaining clip pop out and I couldn't figure how to get it back in. The cut q-tip method was the trick! I held a small pen light in my teeth to illuminate the bearing lip and that helped as well.
    As a side note, (and you probably already know this now), but the extra plastic washer under the spool is to adjust the line load angle to help prevent backlashes...according to Daiwa. This explains why some reels have it and some don't as some people have used it to set the spool a bit lower on the shaft.
    Thank you!

Figured based on looks alone it would a killer against the twinpower. The HD versions are saltigas bj's with a step down in gearing (which is more than adequate)

I use the pozidrivs for that amzn.to/2ExuHc2 Plus on shimano spool shafts you have to use a .9 mm hex (that little screw is under the spool and holds the spool support in place. Torx down to size six are common on shimano and daiwa

      As a surf caster for decades....it's only recently we have a bunch of sealed options out there. It used to be just VS, saltiga z and the mitchell banana....NOw penn torque, Zeebass, saragosa, spheros, shield etc offer waterproofing. This method of protecting reels has been done for many years...in fact we used to fully pack the entire cavity of some reels.
      Hey ...did i respond to your question about the ferrofluid? The stuff i use is VSG 203a.....it's what Ferrotec recommended for my purpose. It's friggin expensive..70-100$ for 3ml. They gave me a 3ml sample.
      Contact Shipwreck who is a member on stripers online.com he should be able to send you some (in order to PM him you need to be a member. It's show season and he's the head daiwa rep so he's a bit bogged down. But worth the effort tracking him down. This is a great video to learn from!
    Question - I have the BG4000, which I dropped in the lake and only submerged for 15 minutes. Also I had dropped it twice fishing on the banks. Now when I turn the handle it seems very loose, and not catching the rotor, which does and does not spin.
    Note - As is turning the handle the rotor does not spin, however if I push the handle in (towards the right), the it will catch the rotor and then it spins.
    What could be the problem?

I now experience a knocking sensation when reeling, even after disassembling and cleaning a second time. I do at least 1000 reels a year in my shop. CorrosionX grease and oil is the best BUT the grease is too thick as it comes to use in a spinning reel. I know this reel will be much harder to turn and use. With your next reel cut the grease with CorrosionX oil to thin it out.

      @NasalObstruction 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you don`t listen very well..he clearly stated that the reel will be considerable harder to turn, Packing a bearing with grease will always give you that result. The whole point of what he did was to help salt proof those bearings.

      It can be... It can also be and often times it's something binding on the 'output "side of the drive trane... Pinion bearings or too much (or oxidized) grease where the spool shaft traverses the pinion... Also it could be the oscillation gear (being over greased underneath or oxidized /water immulsified grease)

Considering it has taken countless dunks in freshwater from kayaking and trout fishing in rapids and on pecarious grounds,it works as brand new still after maintenance. • @adamw8941
      @adamw8941 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not unless you want your bearings and reel to move incredibly slowly. Oil inside (most) bearings. However, I am not servicing surf reels. If I'm taking a reel apart to service, I do rub a light coating of grease on the outside of the bearing after making sure that oil has made its way inside the bearing and the bearing is spinning well and quietly. A grease coating on the outside of the bearing helps to keep oil inside and anything else outside.

    If fishing from a boat on the salt would you use the same amount of grease. Also, did u pack that little bearing under the spool?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends......if you're a hoser offer you may want to. At the minimum though you'd probably want to pack the upper pinion bearing, and the bearing on the side you attach the handle. Plus pack the ar switch with grease.
      HKjonathan who supplied the reel prefers it faster since he burns for albies....So I will remove or thin the grease for easier cranking.
      If it's a bunker snagging reel I would not pack it this way on the boat.

    Do you know where, if at all possible, I could buy a bearing(s) for the line roller of the BG, to replace the bushing(s)? And do other handle designs on the more pricey BG variants (saltist, saltist back bay, etc) incorporate a gasket anywhere around the handle screw or the cap on the other side? That would be worth trying to buy to throw onto the BG as well if it's compatible, but I guess grease works just as well?

    • @naumanahmadtariq8717

      if you tighten the side plate too much it will press the pinion and main gear against each other and gears will not mesh together properly. Also the back of the main gear will touch the side plate while rotating.

    Did you noticed a difference in the force you need to apply to turn the reel after you grease the bearings? Also would you recommend Aqua Shield or Corrosion X.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absoultely. Grease packing all the bearings will make it tighter. Cutting grease with oil is a good way to minimize it. Aquashield I'm finding to be better....but corrosion x easier to work with. Also I find that I use two cuts of aquashield....uncut with oil and cut with corrosion x oil as it is very sticky. You can't go wrong with each..but aquashield takes som egetting used to and it gets allllll over the place.

    Just an FYI if anyone did what I did with that silly little clip that holds down the non gear side bearing. If that clip shoots off into the abyss never to be found again, and you don't want to pay to have a 50 cent piece shipped to you, you can make one that at least for me is easier to work with. I just took a piece of #5 single strand wire and made a circle slightly smaller than the piece the bearing sits over. I just use two micro screwdrivers to spread it out slightly so it fits over and into the gap. Bearing doesn't slide over the wire at all so it does the same job. To get it out just find the end of one side, push down, and the opposite side will move up. From there you're good to go. I did run the sharp ends of the circle on a piece of sand paper just so they're not sharp, but that's probably unnecessary. If you already have the tool to make loops in wire it's a 30 second process.

    I love lube and I go pretty hard on the lube with my BG's because I had one get FULL of salt. At the same time, I feel like so much of this grease is just gonna end up in the case, not really doing much but being it's awesome sticky self. Maybe that's the idea but as soon as those gears mesh that's a lot of grease that's squeezing out into the case. I use a product called tefgel for where the two sides of the case interact and it does well.
