  • In our newest video, Hero: Visualizing the Epic, we break down why the wuxia masterpiece was so ingenious in its design and storytelling by looking at the very word we used to describe it: epic.
    This monumental undertaking of historical narratives uses observable choreography to connects fact, fiction, viewpoints and emotions to color, location, costumes and makeup.
    What director Yimou Zhang, cinematographer Christopher Doyle and production designers Tingxaio Huo and Zhenshou Yi created with Hero was an epic visual catalog of interpretation and feelings.

    “Powerful visual composition” was a beautiful way to describe it. The cinematography, the colours, the choreography, and the unique way it ultimately told three stories (your version, my version, and the truth) made this one of the best. Underrated, wish I caught this on the big screen.

    This is an excellent video.
    The explanation of the colors used was nice and I didn’t even notice little things like the hair differences in the different accounts of the stories.
    You got the nail on the head when you mentioned pacing: argument, counter argument, truth - it flowed so well. It’s an easy movie to follow, but so deep when you work to understand it. Nicely done

    Hi! I do like the overall analysis but one quite important point I disagree. That was the coloring point.
    The different scense with the diff colours were actually the 3 stages of swordsmanship pointed out by the King at the end.
    Red=Blood & Aggression. 1st stage, man and sword became one, everything is a weapon, as the man becomes the weapon, fuel by hatred, violence and vengence. Thus in red scene we see the very darkside of men, violence, actual killing, greed, vengence and utilization of everything as weapon.
    Blue=Openess & Humanism.
    2nd Stage: One no longer holding a weapon, for the sword is in his heart.
    The uniqueness of this blue scene was the lack of visual violence and openness to nature. We were not shown any shot where weapon strikes the body. And at the last scene in the pagoda, even as Broken Sword dropped his weapon, his emotion towards Moon stops the attack from Nameless. In this blue scene we are shown that Humanism can be used as a weapon to stop violence, using the weapon from ones heart.
    Green=Renewal, Regeneration, New beginning.
    3rd Stage: There are no swords. Embraces peace.
    This is the scene where there were no green (other than their clothes) until you enter the court. Broken Sword finally reached the 3rd stage, realizing killing the King satisfy one but would harms even more ppl for ages to come. Thats why no more killing for the ultimate stage he has achieved.
    Beside those, the other color scheme are also very important in story telling.
    Black: the Actual color of the Qin court. Was said the King used black for black is emotionaless, which represents Legalism, the basis of a functioning society. The King ordered all government property Black, which included his carriage, dinning set and animals only using Black Horses. He believes color influences ones judgement, making one irrational. His devotion to Legalism is why he could not have spared Nameless even thought he really wanted to. As his advisors (all dressed in Black) reminded him in Unison "The King's Law states, He must be Killed!! To United citizens under our land, He must be Killed!!" Meaning if the King don't follow the law, how do you expect the citizens to follow the laws.
    Also the scenes in white are also set in reality. So you've got Black and White are told in reality, are not to be changed by narrators, in compare to the color scene where they were all stories.

    • @CineStructure
      @CineStructure  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is my favorite comment ever! Thank you so much for the plethora of information...this is a tremendous analysis of the color in the film and provides a whole new perspective.

    I like how you contrasts those colours and the extra information on the locations of filming is another wow as I was thinking are those scene all in real geographical setting?
