I remember drooling over one of those that was in a display case at a sporting goods store I passed on the way to and from school in the 60's and 70's. Back then, they came in a cool wooden box. I finally picked one up 10 years ago on ebay, and fulfilled my boy-hood wish. Great knives. There are at least two knives around today that were possibly with Bowie at the Alamo. One, the Moore Bowie is about the size of your Puma, and the other, the Musso Bowie is huge with a 14" blade.
my first hunting knive was a puma. it was my dads he gave it to me when i started hunting with him at age twelve.that was thirty years ago.i have all kinds knives now but seem to use that old puma the most.thanks for sharing a look at yours.
Hickok, if you have any more vids to upload keep um coming! I dont have to be at work for another hour and your uploading spree today has made my afternoon!!
@1LonePuma, Whatever I'm hacking through the woods with IS my primary cutting tool, at least in a large knife, because trimming the trails is my "primary" order of business with OP (outside the pocket) knives. :-)
@DoubleTap529 , Yeah, I'm not sure what that's about; I paid twice that back in the '70s. I think it's different steel, or else they are made somewhere other than Germany. Not sure.
My dad bought property right across the road from where he grew up, after it was logged. We are still in the process of clearing it, and building a range on it. Believe me, when I say that stuff grows in quick, especially blackberries with inch long thorns!
I have got the same knife in the 11 6376 model 8 " blade, that comes in wood box, and brand new, it's a excellent vintage knife, like all puma knives. Good vid and Nice review !
he was just snapping most of those branches. but when he opened that package at the end that showed how sharp it was and effortless even with little resistance
I could see that it is model 6376... It is a formidable knife... not because of its size but because of its power... I have one from 1981... the first 7 cm of edge from the tip I left very sharp, to fine cuts of meats, and soft foods.. the rest of the edge a little less sharp, for jobs cutting firewood and breaking bones... The only modification I made to it - for the highest functionality - is to wrap the handle with a tennis leather grip It was out of necessity, because although the deer bone handle is precious, but in sustained camping tasks chopping firewood it ends up injuring the hand... With the tennis grip I can chop for as long as I want, there are no more inconveniences... The knife is a real tank. Kind regards from the South of Argentina
Say Heah Hickok, last week I bought a Bowie 2, I couldn't find any info on it. I finally called Puma U. S. A. and they didn't have any info on it, They told me to call Puma Germany and bingo. Yeah, my Puma is made in Solingen Germany and it's handmade and in 440c. A while back I bought the Gerber Freeman Hunter and Caper, I bought both sepertly as close outs at great prices, Both are made similarly to the Puma Bowie 2, The Bowie 2 is just a blade with Stag Slabs for the handle and the same with my Gerber Freeman except the Freeman are in the S30V, But a perfect match even to the stag color. Just calle'me lucky.
The weight is what gives you a cut Greg. Yes the edge is part of it but in terms of hacking, even a dull edge can cut if it has weight and force behind it. A cut to any object is nothing more than rupturing the surface bonds of it's molecular structure. I wrote a paper on this in high school. I took a dull broad sword and swung and cut 6 inchs deep in an old mattress. Very nice bowie knife by the way.
@XBobLeeSwagger7 , That's why John and I have a special agreement with TH-cam. They have give any viewer the capability to stop the video and even exit out of it at any point. :-)
Good job and informitive. I make Bowie knives. I heard you mention "German Steel" several times. I use vintage American steel. What I mean, I use old steel from cars. I have used leaf springs and bumper brackets.
@TacticalAngel86 Of course you know the answer to your question. While serrated blades go back to the stone age, they were never popular for a common mans' knife until the late 20th century. Serrated blades are difficult to sharpen without a specialized stone or honing device, thus making them impracticle for extended use in the field. The uses we might put a serrated blade to, cutting wood or bone, were more effectively done with an axe, hatchet or heavy knife.
@hickok45 I've read reviews recently to the effect that the materials are still good but the workmanship is not nearly what it used to be. Nice video, thanks, love the knife overviews.
Hickok45's knife is a Puma 6376. It has an 8" blade and weighs over 14 oz. If you buy a current model Puma Original Bowie you get a much smaller knife. They now have a 6" blade and only weigh about 7 oz. Don't buy the current Puma thinking you'll get something like what Hickok has.
To each their own, IMHO insofar as a knife with a real sharp edge to it for cutting and chopping, No other Bowie that I've ever owned comes close to my 15 inch Cold Steel Laredo Bowie.
When I was 14 years old Dad open the sporting good store that knife was in a show case that was 1970 I haven’t seen one since until now that was a good time working with dad In the sporting goods store “American sportsman”
@machineguntongue I believe they made the knives before the started making the guns. The knives are made for the Austrian and German military and they are inexpensive and rugged so no they are not just for marketing.
This is old puma that is pretty difficult to find anymore excellent piece of art from germans again in arms and knives making.....key word of h45 is ‘’pretty handy knive ‘’
There's quite a bit of debate as to what size Jim Bowie's original knife was, some witnesses at the sandbar fight for instance describe a nine inch knife, although Bowie hand more than one knife, if you Google 'Bowie Knives' you can see a Bowie that was designed by James Black in 1830 labeled 'Bowie Number One' that has a massive blade that almost looks like a sword.
@hickok45 Actually when I see that you have a new post thats under 10 mins I get ticked....lol No really I love the longer videos! Specially when their so informative... Keep them coming, I've learned a lot from you so far.
Fair enough, I have a fair variety of different sized Bowie knives but probably an eleven or twelve inch would be a little too small for me insofar as heavy duty bush trimming & clearing goes, Probably a 14 inch would be as small as I'd go in that regard.
@JAG6363 Oh I commented on the knife,as well as cutting properties. What I love about the knife is the weight as I said and I also love the utility serration on it. Very good and useful. It's why my carry pocket knives are almost all half straight edge half serrated. Like my kershaw tanto blur. I want a Puma bowie now for my collection hehe.
That is a nice looking knife, but I could not afford it. The price is outside my normal range of knives I buy for self defense, survival, or for general use.
@hickok45 Knives have razor sharp hand-forged 6" fixed blade contains 100% D1.4 German Solingen stainless steel... honed from a solid steel bar and Rockwell tested to 57-59 HRC for hardness and strength Knife made with full-tang construction Built-in finger guard and lanyard hole Measures 11" overall, weighs 8 ozs. Deluxe snap leather sheath with leg tie included Germany
Say Heah Hickok, I just bought my Puma Bowie 2. It's brand new and I bought it from the Pawn Shop in brand new condition, The box has the same numbers that are on the knife. It also says hand made in Solingen, Germany. Mine is a Puma Bowie 2. It doesn't have a Bolster just the blade and two stag slabs as the handle. I can't find any info on it, I would especially like to know if mine is 440c. The sheath is a high quality leather. I would wonder why such a nice sheath cover a cheap quality knife. Any info would be appreciated, Thanx in advance
this in my opinion is the size bowie knives should be. cold steel gets crazy with these knives and they end up being like 16 inches which to me makes the knife impractical
i agree cold steel uses good steel i just dont like the size i understand that its good for chopping but id want something smaller thatd have more uses
I remember drooling over one of those that was in a display case at a sporting goods store I passed on the way to and from school in the 60's and 70's.

The best knife ever😊 I've had mine for 33 years now. And has allways been my go too knife.hello from Norway
I like how you always end your videos with "life is good". It truly is, mate. I like people witha positive attitude like that.
my first hunting knive was a puma. it was my dads he gave it to me when i started hunting with him at age twelve.that was thirty years ago.i have all kinds knives now but seem to use that old puma the most.thanks for sharing a look at yours.
What a beauty, the grind looks perfect, just look at that edge!
The mans has taste "Puma" is a Legend !
Hickok, if you have any more vids to upload keep um coming! I dont have to be at work for another hour and your uploading spree today has made my afternoon!!
i think you make the best knife videos on youtube to many people cry about how much the knife weighs makes me freakin angry kepp on keeping on
You bought this knife the year I was born wow! Nice thanks for the display! Cool blade!
@1LonePuma, Whatever I'm hacking through the woods with IS my primary cutting tool, at least in a large knife, because trimming the trails is my "primary" order of business with OP (outside the pocket) knives. :-)

I just looked this knife up and bought one. Thanks, Hickok!
puma knives have been in business for 250 years, pretty impressive.
he was just snapping most of those branches. but when he opened that package at the end that showed how sharp it was and effortless even with little resistance
Three videos in one day! Sure glad I had the day off. Nice knife!
I just want to say thank you .you are a good man .

I was given my grandfather’s Puma bowie by my mother. I’ll pass it down to one of my grandkids someday. 👍🏽
@grimreapper, Probably at some point. Not sure when.
A couple years back?
I am also getting older lol.
yet another great video, Thank you.
This is the kind of knife I like. Looks different, but still simple.
The weight is what gives you a cut Greg. Yes the edge is part of it but in terms of hacking, even a dull edge can cut if it has weight and force behind it. Sweet, here's a man who knows his stuff
i have a newer one ... whittled a Pipe out of a block of oak with it ... didn't even have to sharpen it .... that knife is a beast
@XBobLeeSwagger7 , That's why John and I have a special agreement with TH-cam. They have give any viewer the capability to stop the video and even exit out of it at any point. :-)
Puma is making this knife again. It's the Puma Phoenix Stag 116376. It looks exactly the same as the one in this video except for the serration.
Good taste even in knives is a rare quality and should be appreciated. I have a fondness for Cold Steel and my Laredo Bowie.
Good job and informitive. I make Bowie knives. I heard you mention "German Steel" several times. I use vintage American steel. What I mean, I use old steel from cars. I have used leaf springs and bumper brackets.

Beautiful Bowie, Thanks for sharing

hickock has the coolest toys

Nice! Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work and keep sharing the knowledge!!!
That is the actual size I have a western bowie that size ,that quality has long since been gone in puma
Hickok, I love your knife videos, if you have more please show them! :]
To each their own, IMHO insofar as a knife with a real sharp edge to it for cutting and chopping, No other Bowie that I've ever owned comes close to my 15 inch Cold Steel Laredo Bowie.
Wow... All I want for Christmas...
I have a few puma knives and love them! good vid
Another great video my friend. Thanks and keep it up.....Teacher!
When I was 14 years old Dad open the sporting good store that knife was in a show case that was 1970 I haven’t seen one since until now that was a good time working with dad In the sporting goods store “American sportsman”
Do you have any pictures of you from the 70s? I'm curious to see.
@hickok45 the new ones are smaller. Just not the same knife.
I've got one of the old ones. Now it should be twice the value since it was hickoked :o)
@machineguntongue I believe they made the knives before the started making the guns. The knives are made for the Austrian and German military and they are inexpensive and rugged so no they are not just for marketing.
gorgeous blade...thanks for sharing!
hickok45@ the blade looks like it has a little rust in the edge and tip...time to get the semi chrome polish out
Hey Hickok! Are you going to be at the Nashville fairground gun show this weekend?
how the hell did some guy rob him and live
Lol
hey hickok have you ever heard of a rail road spike knife? its an amazing peace of work! you should look into getting one!
have you ever used the Spec plus Marine raider bowie made by ontario knife company?
Beautiful knife.
This is old puma that is pretty difficult to find anymore excellent piece of art from germans again in arms and knives making.....key word of h45 is ‘’pretty handy knive ‘’
This seems to have a nice swell in the centre of the handle, but the PUMA 103RC 116396 Bowie often does not.
KOOL knife my friend!
Best. Snack Opener. Ever.
Very nice video - thank you for sharing 45. Life IS good ...
This is what reality TV should have been!
Nothing is as good as a knife in close quarters...
Burglary? At the Hickok compound?
There's quite a bit of debate as to what size Jim Bowie's original knife was, some witnesses at the sandbar fight for instance describe a nine inch knife, although Bowie hand more than one knife, if you Google 'Bowie Knives' you can see a Bowie that was designed by James Black in 1830 labeled 'Bowie Number One' that has a massive blade that almost looks like a sword.

Yes... Life is good!
Nice video, cool knife. Take care.

Hello. You have placed it at an angle that does not allow reading. And you don't mention it either ... is it the Bowie 6376 model? Or 6396? Thanks !
@rgs1975 , It's pronounced "Big Cat You Don't Want To Mess With"! :-)
That is a nice looking knife, but I could not afford it. The price is outside my normal range of knives I buy for self defense, survival, or for general use.
why are there no comments for this awesome knife?
Love the show.
she's a nice edge, but doesn't beat my Filipino bolo knife.
14 inches, curved edge, razor sharp.
@hickok45
Knives have razor sharp hand-forged 6" fixed blade contains 100% D1.4 German Solingen stainless steel... honed from a solid steel bar and Rockwell tested to 57-59 HRC for hardness and strength
Knife made with full-tang construction
Built-in finger guard and lanyard hole
Measures 11" overall, weighs 8 ozs.
Deluxe snap leather sheath with leg tie included
Germany
Well you definitely have good taste in knives. I guess that goes along with good taste in weapons.
Awesome knife.
My Grandpa gave me the same exact knife!
@hickok45 WHHHAAAAATTT, and this whole time I've been stuck watching your entire videos....
Very nice Knife !, i got one, same model 8 " blade length , do u go hunting ? Thanks!
4:03 - 4:11 LOL! "Weapon." Love it. :-)
Oh, my Puma Bowie 2 is a Saber Vex Grind, out of the factory instead of a Hollow Grind, Go figure, That's what attached me to the knife.
this in my opinion is the size bowie knives should be. cold steel gets crazy with these knives and they end up being like 16 inches which to me makes the knife impractical
Not that I wouldn't love to have a vintage Puma Bowie as well, Probably the oldest Bowie I've got right now is a 1980 ten dot USA 1836 Case Bowie.
Now that's a knife!
Very nice thing!
I was given a Puma Waidmesser 3591. Do you have a review of this, or know where I can find one, and any video on caring for it?
@1LonePuma ...2 super quality knives. I believe your forgetting KA-BAR.
by chance does it have a specific model number on it? trying to track down one of the old german made ones.
ty
My buddy Mike McClure makes custom knives just like that
love that knife
I have the this but it's the 1960s version, how much do these normally go for if it's that old?
You would proabably like the cold steel Trail Master.
@hickok45 i was just wondering, since i have never seen an add on your videos
Wow, now that's a "Pig Sticker."
i agree cold steel uses good steel i just dont like the size i understand that its good for chopping but id want something smaller thatd have more uses
Trying to get an idea of the knife size - how big a guy are you?
@TheDawnofwar1 He didn't say it was HIS house. In fact, he might have been the burglar.
You are right. vegetation also explode right now here in scandinavia. considering buying a machete.
