Hickock45, I bougt my Puma Hunters Friend in 1970, that's the 5" version, at the JC Penny's in Winona Minnesota for $18.00. After taxes this was just about half a weeks pay at my 95 cent an hour job. I still have it today but the blade is pitted as I stored it in the leather sheath when I was in the Navy from 71 to 75. I joined when I was 17. Great videos you make.
4 dislikes??? Really? One, how could you possibly take a disliking to this, and Two, Hickok45 makes phenomenal videos that are packed with information and history. Period.
Sir 1st of all hail down to you, big fan from India, my question to you that, which knife you carry in most of your videos, it looks small but it feels very firm please reply??
You were taught right! That's exactly how I use a patch knife. Been doing it the same way since the 1970's. BTW that's a nice little knife - lots of character.
@sparxcwg, Actually, the ramrods that come with muzzle loaders are the "worst" fit. They are correct diameter and all for loading, but once you ever get your hands on an extended length rod for cleaning and loading, you'll never touch the one that comes with the gun unless you're in the field and have no choice. I've never seen anybody who shoots much at a bench not have a long ramrod. Any big muzzleloading event will have many variations for sale. You'll enjoy shooting more with one.
I have a Puma hunter that is handy. I have no experience with muzzle loaders so I was paying close attention to the art of doing this type of operation.
I still have mine from the early 70s ,with the sheath and both are still holding up well ,,also a Puma Skinner /w/sheath ,,,love 'em !! For pocket knives I like Boker ,,can't beat Soligen steel!
@lingenfeltervee May be, but that doesn't explain the bulged and blown-up barrels I've seen hanging in gun shops. Apparently, it was not a myth for some. :-) The patch issue could be real; I've seen lots of smoldering patches after firing a few rounds. Fortunately, they usually don't go that far - usually just 10 - 25 yards downrange.
@Bootstastefunny, No, but Springfield is really good to us - sent some shirts and hats to John and me, as well as to the gunshop in Joelton that helps transfer the T&E guns in for me. That's class. I'm just trying to mix it up a bit.
I received a similar Puma as an anniversary gift from my wife in the early ‘80’s,..the Puma Outdoor. It has a longer blade than than this knife. Good German steel that can be taken to razor-like sharpness.
I just thought this knife could make a good and handy patch knife 😉. Puma knives have always been regarded to be prestigious hunters accessories to show off with, because they always were very expensive. The traditional hunters pal is still on sale and will cost you 180 € (200 $).
I like the sound that you put at the end of the video...prowling while cutting the patch...BTW looks like you got hit by a troll...keep the videos coming!
well the range officer said a dry patch can start the range on fire. mythbusters did the myth about plugging the end of a barrel, they couldnt get it to explode even when the welded the end closed.
I have the same knive, just a knewer model, but looks just the same. It's called Jagdnicker in germany, which could be translated to hunter-nod. "(ab-)Nicken" stands for cutting through the spine, directly behind the head between the first bone, to instantly kill an animal. Thats why this knife has its shape. Just some info, which nobody is interested in ;)
@hickok45 will that have the same non-stick effect you talk about with spraying that on your glock? so stuff sticks less inside cuz after a few rounds my round balls are hard to get in, some of that reason is because i use .495 instead of .490.
We found my dads knife from when he was a kid turns out to be the same knife. We ended up looking on eBay at some other peoples prices and we found one for like 600 i guess it's a nice knife
@Gungrave123 That's a shame. Recently though I heard an interview with a Puma rep at the blade show and a number of the knives he showed are still made in Germany. He talked about the chinese ones as just an option.
@jamesjr934, Nope, just lucky to be very alive and healthy enough to do all the same stuff I did in 1970, except for playing 20 minutes straight in a college basketball game. I might have a problem with that, unless I could wear a respirator the last three quarters. :-)
Love how hickok uploads a video pretty much every day. Some of the most quality gun(and knife) videos on the internet too. Keep it up.
I found this knife in my camper van, and it apparently used to belong to a Dutchman. Gotta say, this thing is gorgeous.

@theKGB65, Yeah, I'll have to watch him; next thing I know he'll be giving you a slow mo look at some of my worst misses!
Sir 1st of all hail down to you, big fan from India, my question to you that, which knife you carry in most of your videos, it looks small but it feels very firm please reply??

lol i loved the slow motion ending!!!!!!!! LIFE IS GOOD!!!!!!!!
Great knife, I've had mine since 69 or 70 and field dressed several deer and misc. camp tasks with it. Thanks for the reveiw.
I have a Puma hunter that is handy. I have no experience with muzzle loaders so I was paying close attention to the art of doing this type of operation.
@linkdead14, Not really. It's the same reason a shotgun barrel will often blow up if there's mud stuck in the end of the barrel, or whatever.
I just picked up a 1970 mod Puma Hunter's Pal from a market for $50 Australian, and like yourself for a Patch Knife !!
Cheers
Gordon

I really like seeing a knife being used and enjoyed. That is a great looking Knife. Thanks for posting
LOL the slow mo at the end was Epic!
my first hunting knife i got when i was about 10 was a puma and have been using them ever since. there great
@CTKTMRIDER, They still get pretty dirty after several shots. In fact, they can get so dirty that it's difficult to load.
Hello from two gunlovers in Germany, we love your videos stick to it! and make ´em more!
@Gungrave123, Is that why they are so "cheap" to buy now, as compared with prices I paid in the '70s?
@lingenfeltervee, Yeah, I had it soaked with Ballistol.
The final scene gave me a laugh. Tell John I totally get his humor.
Love the old Puma's
Great vid, as usual.
Loved the "slow motion action shot" at the end.....hilarious.
@willythefrog1, That's because I'm on vacation. We'll get back to one or two a week pretty soon.

I think, Fred Bear used this knife, never heard on Howard Hill using a special Great video! Best Wishes, Peter
Peter O. Stecher yes that is old just look at the rivets them have a puma head on they the new ones dont
I received a similar Puma as an anniversary gift from my wife in the early ‘80’s,..the Puma Outdoor. It has a longer blade than than this knife. Good German steel that can be taken to razor-like sharpness.
The patch is usually wetted down. At competition you can get in trouble if you use dry patches.
@LPXDproductions, Actually, they do.
love the Slo-mo ending.
Thanks again. This video is very special to me. Silly, but it makes me think of Dad. Thanks, "Rt"
@Theoatob , I shot it a bunch, but in the other video.
wow that slow-mo was intense!!!!!!...
Was kinda waiting for a boom at the end of the video with the pal sheath knife cut patch and nice old blackpowder rifle

@jkpz28, Yep, I finally did an FAQ video on my ear protection awhile back.
i have a puma white hunter beautiful knife
thanks for showing this knife, very nice
I have a couple of vintage Puma straight razors. They're the shit. Quality stuff.
I like the sound that you put at the end of the video...prowling while cutting the patch...BTW looks like you got hit by a troll...keep the videos coming!
Nice knife. Thanks for sharing and all the good info.
what they call neck knifes now are patch knifes
Great video as always Hickok, you could make a video about anything seem interesting!
Exciting slow motion replay FTW!
well the range officer said a dry patch can start the range on fire. mythbusters did the myth about plugging the end of a barrel, they couldnt get it to explode even when the welded the end closed.
Thanks, never seen that done before.
slow mo knife cutting = epic!!
Cool knife. Never knew what a patch knife was.
haha love the slow mo at the end
i really like the knife videos!

Hahaha gah I was really hoping for some slow motion sawing action at the end there. Thanks :)
Father had 58 Remington zuave hit the set trigger before he sat on his shooting seat went over back wards when he touched the trigger

great knife!
greetings from Germany!
@lingenfeltervee whats wrong with using dry patches? (just curious)
I really enjoyed this video, if you got more stuff that has a history behind it, then please share it with us.
ha. slow-motion cutting at the end. neat.
Hey, thanks for the lesson there. I enjoyed this video. ~Wolf
Great knives the Puma hunters pal, i have one which has been handed down to me and i use it to skin a break down goat carcases without any issues.
We found my dads knife from when he was a kid turns out to be the same knife. We ended up looking on eBay at some other peoples prices and we found one for like 600 i guess it's a nice knife
@Gungrave123 The Puma SGB and TEC lines are their Chinese knives.
@Fordfanforlife777, I wish.
Does the patch burn up after it leaves the barrel?
Hickok, you've probably been asked a hundred times but what type of ear plugs is it that you always have on?
How do you sharpen your knives, great sir?
Loved the slow motion cutting. Made me laugh :-)
How do you get a bullet out of the rifle if you accidentally dry ball it?
@17hmr243 excellent.. learning something new here, thanks bro.
I guess the bores on these rifles never really get too dirty since your essentially running a patch down it with every round! ;-)
The slow motion made me laugh.
@hickok45 Hickok how much did buy it for? (in the 70's I mean).
@Theoatob ah ha! i just found ur enfield vid. Thankyou!
that was a good cut at the end lol
any links to top quality knife websites ? deliver to UK
@Gungrave123 That's a shame. Recently though I heard an interview with a Puma rep at the blade show and a number of the knives he showed are still made in Germany. He talked about the chinese ones as just an option.
@onexnightxstandx4, Check out the recent upload of my shooting this gun. We did a Knife video in the middle of the 1858 Enfield video. :-)
Nice knife.
hey about how much per week do you spend on ammo
@Pizzitch -Not sure if you're being cute, but he actually did a video with FPS Russia.
Hick hock could you shoot an arrow with your rem 870?
I noticed there was no powder so I started talking to the screen saying "Hey there's no powder!"
@MACEX1000, It would probably work, if "cheap" is more important than owning a classy piece of artwork. :-)
@sparxcwg The ramrod on the gun is shorter than the one he's using, making it more awkward to push the ball all the way down.
They are worth a lot now.
That Knife is Cool i should get it
hey hickok i think you should try knife making. you would probably be good at it. :)
THat is one sharp knife!!!
Slow motion knife action!
more knife videos!
@KapteinFruit, Hey, when you live as long as I have, you can't help but have some historical stuff. :-)
Pillow ticking material still use it
god damnit hickok45 everytime i watch one of your vids i want to just go out and buy whatever u r using lol
@DolphinProductions1 , I could tell you, but then I'd have to . . . . well, you know the story. :-)
@jamesjr934, Nope, just lucky to be very alive and healthy enough to do all the same stuff I did in 1970, except for playing 20 minutes straight in a college basketball game. I might have a problem with that, unless I could wear a respirator the last three quarters. :-)
What insects are making those noises out there in TN? Cicadas?
Wonder how you looked back then
Is your name 45 because of the caliber or were you born in 1945?
