The statute of limitations should never expire on murder, rape, or child molestation. It sometimes takes victims years to come to terms with it.

20+ years after DNA testing became widespread, it is long past the time for the statute of limitations (in countries and states that have one) to be abolished for rape and other sexual assaults.

@@rwentfordable Today, yes, it's stupid, but until as recently as the 1970's most serious crimes against the person were prosecuted based on eye witness testimony, alibis, and implied time lines. After 20 years most of such evidence would be highly questionable. DNA has no such loss in evidentiary value due to the passage of time.

I live in Ireland but we watched Unsolved Mysteries which was shown on British TV. I remember seeing this case being broadcast in the early-mid 90s and finding it very depressing because Lisa was such a loving person. I'm so happy that justice was finally served for her and her family. As always, you shine a light on the victim's life and the pain that their loss leave behind - a very befitting tribute to Lisa and her loved ones.

I clicked to indicate I agree with you; however, you should the original rationale for the statute of limitations. Years after the crime, the defendant may be unable to locate to locate exculpatory witnesses. This is is important because DNA results may be misused, misinterpreted, or even ignored by the prosecution. As an example, one prosecutor didn't tell the jury that there were several people in CA alone who could have the DNA profile. It turned out that the first man convicted was not the perpetrator and another man was ultimately found to be the perpetrator.

Not every rape case results in a confession by the perpetrator; very few cases result in a confession actually. It might not seem like this to you becuase you watch true crime videos where they present selected cases that are the most dramatic and tend to have more confessions in them. Also, if someone was going to confess to a rape, it would provably happen within the statute of limitations unless it was say a deathbed confession or something which wouldn't matter anyway. After a certain amount of time, evidence can erode, witnesses that can confirm someones alibi can die, witnesses can die, someones testimony can be forgotten. All of these factors increase the chance that an innocent person will be convicted of rape which should obviously be avoided and is why the statute of limitations is a good thing.

SO tragic. Such a nice person. The part about the sister bringing the maid of honor flowers to her grave almost had me in tears. What a piece of shit. I would really liked to have helped him out with his "attempted suicide". It's clear to me that he was leaving bread crumbs his lawyer could use in trying to gain sympathy with the court during sentencing with his oh so contrite confession. And another note apologizing to whoever would find his body (yeah right) and the note to the family (potentially mitigating victim's impact statement). Then driving himself to the ER too funny. He was in cockroach survival mode. It was simply his next move - the only one he had left - after having successfully dodged DNA tests or 25 years. Anyone who thinks he is anything other than than a cold killer is a fool. Nah, somebody should've stepped on that cockroach when the lights finally went on and he scurried for the corner.. Finally I wonder why the police didn't follow him in secret and obtain DNA from a discarded whatever at a bowling alley or anywhere - as many other police departments have done to great success.

If the police bothered to interview her sister, they also would have found out that her sister had told her that her husband "could not have sex unless he was in control and held a knife to her neck".
Makes you wonder why her sister did not go to the police herself and tell them all the information that her sister had told her, especially about the state of her husband on the night of the murder, and that he had bought that music box from the very store the victim worked in that night.

I've been sickened seeing footage of other killers who smirk, look blank, and exude utter arrogance and indifference:( I am so curious as to what psychological or physiological differences would account for this... (By no means am I saying I think this person is less guilty, but I was struck by the difference in demeanor) It was so sad to hear of all the changes that occurred afterwards - the purchasing of gun permits, mace, and pepper spray; signing up for martial arts instructions, parents not letting their girls work, people being walked to their cars, etc. He not only killed this beautiful young woman full of light, but he killed the sense of safety and normalcy.

It's sickening to hear that during the investigation for Lisa's murderer, many women "turned in" their husbands or boyfriends as a means of getting back at them for some perceived misdemeanor - infidelity, violence against them, custody issues, etc. That someone could use Lisa's death as a scare tactic against their husband or boyfriend, knowing that he was not involved, just as a means of getting him listed as a potential murderer and have to go through the investigations, interviews, finding witnesses to confirm his alibi, etc., is disgusting. Murder isn't a game to "play" in order to get someone into a world of trouble, it is a colossal, inexcusable waste of police time, and a waste of time and resources in finding the true criminal. I feel nothing but endless sorrow for Lisa's family, friends, students, employers, and all who came in contact with her. There seems to be 100% consensus that Lisa was one of those rarely found human beings who are loved by everyone she came in contact with; she clearly had much to offer the world, and would have made a remarkable wife and mother herself. I wish I had known her.
