  • Digging an incredible crystal vein in Tory Hill we find apatite crystals, titanite crystals, feldspar crystals and blocky fluor-richterite crystals. For rocks and minerals this location is without a doubt the leading collecting site in Ontario at this time.

    Hi Mick & Jeff, Thanks for the nice videos on rockhounding. My wife and I are in our 70's and because of health issues are
    unable to get out to digs in Washington State anymore. Watching your videos are so much fun as your knowledge of geological chemistry is truly inspiring. We are actually in the dirt and muck with you all the way waiting to see what you pull out of the
    ground next. Just ordered a couple of mugs off the web site so will toast you when we view your next trip. The very best
    to you and happy digging. Thanks again!

    Good video, and good advice on amphiboles. You really can't tell what it is unless you have composition data. They can accommodate so many different elements.

    I'm happy to say that some of your area's fluor-richterite made it into my collection - all the way south to KY. Also, my Edenite from Wilberfarce, ON looks so much like your Essonville specimen - just a subtle change in mineralogy, I guess?

    Really great videos for a french mineral's lover, but it would be better if you put some pictures of videos of all the pieces, cleaned ! Thank you for sharing your experiences ;)

    We have been to Tory hill many times! Lots of appetite and titanite, there is another dig site on the other side of that ridge we found, I think most of what we found were asbestos crystal but there was some other stuff we never identified mixed in.

      Sorry, meant to say on the other side of the road from that ridge. Also tried to find the original mine entrance and never had any luck.

    I recently started Rock Hounding, I was chronically ill for over a decade and the one thing that really provided me some comfort when Ill were my crystals. I live in Hanover and just became aware of the Bancroft area a couple of months ago. I went to the Sodalite Mine twice but have not really found anywhere that I can mine. Can you tell me where a good place to go is for beginners? And perhaps a tool or resource for identification of the crystals and minerals?

      You can go right where he was in this video. An excellent resource for minerals is online at Mindat. Good luck!

    Is titanite actually titanium ? If so is it an arsenate or pure titanium? Your videos are awesome.

    Interesting how the Scots and Welsh accents survive in Canada.

    Check your favorite big apatite crystals on Jeff's geiger counter. I have found that strings of apatite beads sold at the travelling rock / jewelry shows are often well above background. Not enough to be worried about but very interesting to see. Also check fossil bone/tooth.

    • @Caver461
      @Caver461  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The apatite has neodymium and praseodymium spectrum bands in the spectroscope

    • @nefariumxxx
      @nefariumxxx 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahh! Heard of the neo in magnets but never heard of the praseodymium until you mentioned it. Reading a little about that - now makes some sense why we get some clicks from apatite bead strands. Check out the info on "half-moon bay black sand" which was freaking people out a while back. Caused a bit of concern until people figured out it was natural ore deposits of lanthanides, etc. Pretty neat.

      If I can find a way to get a photograph i'll give it a try, but I suspect the lines will be too faint.

    Heading up there again this weekend but going to check out this dump for bears as well. Never seen one in real life! What time were you there at?? They must close the gates at some time in the evening I'd think?

    • @Caver461
      @Caver461  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Caver461 thanks! Hopefully we'll have some luck with the minerals and Bears. A few months ago I commented on your video you took near Kingston on Maccormish Lane and never heard back...I'd really like to find out who to contact to get permission to collect on this property. :)

    It's killing me that you don't do "after" shots once they've been cleaned. But, you're so cute when you're all sweaty and muddy that I really don't care. ;-)
