It's crazy to me that such a big bird is still not fully weaned and doesn't have her adult beak colors, I had no idea they could be so big and still be babies!
That was my thought! I was like her beak is already bigger than Cheyennes!

I saw a German TH-camr who owns four Maccas (two yellow boys and two scarlet girls) and I believe it was about two years until the girls were really grown up. So can imagine it's a long time they are babies. Also the red ones are bigger than the yellow ones.

Just be careful... as a multiple bird haver myself I can tell you it wont take long for Cheyenne long to figure our how to open Chaka's cage and let her out. lol our cockatoo can open every cage in the house. I love your new baby! She is soooooo cute.

I love that you guys clarified that both birds have been tested and vaccinated for common diseases- and that I never questioned why it wasn't necessary to put Chaka in quarantine. I love that you two have built that trust with your audience and continue to prove over and over why it's valid 🖤
Parrots don't get any vaccines, but otherwise yes, testing is great!
You put any type of animal in quarantine because so they get used to you and not so stressed ,if you buy a new puppy ,like you don,t put a yong puppy with a big dog for the first time in the same cage ,because your don,t how they with act with each other so you quarantine so they don,t get hurt ,also birds get stressed easily,I am a part time vet ,and we have 3 birds at the vet office different species of birds they are in different cages , sorry if I am rude

4:01 That's what you do with cats too, you just kinda hang out near them and pretend to ignore them and do your own thing, and it helps them get used to you without a potentially stressful direct interaction.

@@catpoke9557 I guess that's because kittens are still growing so they adapt quicker. They don't have anything other than instinct telling them that Humans are Scary, but adult cats either have actual experience with Scary Humans or their experience is to have no human interaction. Kittens are a blank slate, but with adult cats you have to work with what's already there.

I could really see Ed making a great dad but I can't really see Emily wanting actual kids. Her kids, family and focus seem to the animals, which is fine.
What sweethearts! I wouldn't be surprised if Cheyenne starts playing with toys more once she sees Chaka playing with them! This happened with my birds - they learn so much from each other :) I love Cheyenne's little happy noises...so stinking cute!
The method of just hanging out near the bird at 4:10 is something I do with the cats my mom fosters, since they're usually pretty nervous
We use this method for rabbits too. Just hang out next to them and wait for them to approach you when they are ready.
I did this with my short tail pythons when they were babies too. Would just sit on my bed with a book or my phone and let them slither around and check things out in their own time.
Dogs too! Especially when they're nervous or scared. Curl up with a book and don't move for awhile. 😊
Yep,when I got one of my cats she hid under a couch in our office for a week and would just sit on the floor next to it reading a book everyday for a few hrs
It's a good method for any kind of pet. Let them observe you and maybe smell you from a distance, realize that you aren't dangerous, and when they're ready they'll come to you. Had to teach that to my whole family when I got my new and very shy dog, they all thought the best way to approach him was to shout "GOOD BOY" and try to pet him.
Since hurricane Helene, we had to take our bearded dragon with us everywhere we went (he’s back in his regular cage don’t worry!) but we put him on the dash. He loved it! He looked around.. puffed.. climbed into our neck. I’ll admit he was pretty scared, but he loved basking. Mouth open and all.
Felt. Spent weeks with my cat outside on a leash. Thankfully, doggo is a guide dog, and was allowed everywhere... but every time I left the house for the first month I had to open every window for the poor cat. Heat wave + no power was infuriating.
She’s GORGEOUS. I’ll never have birds because I can’t provide for them but I always admire them so much. People who can look after them so that they thrive are always so dedicated!

If you want to get to experience birds more up close you can see if you can volunteer at any bird rescues! (Or even some shelters have birds, just not big ones usually.)
They're obviously very different but quail are much much easier birds, pretty easy for almost anyone to keep.

I love seeing the absolute trust and love Cheyenne has for you. There's a casual, relaxed air between you both that Chaka seems to pick up on, too.

Cutest bird aside (for a second), I laughed way too hard when Ed said, "you don't have to wait for me!" and Emily booked it. Because me too. LOL "you should try one" and the IMMEDIATE "okay" made me laugh, too. This video was just what I needed today! Chaka and Cheyenne are the BEST macaws!
Omg I haven’t even finished the video yet but she’s SO CUTE!!!!! You’ve probably already figured this out but as a bird groomer I’ve found that baby birds will let anyone do anything with them, that’s why I love grooming the babies🥰 I rarely have to towel them. Now is a great opportunity to train and desensitize routine vet procedures and grooming by playing with towels, extending her wings, and laying on her back as well as letting her sit on and receive scritches by as many people as possible for socialization. Good luck and I’m so excited to follow her journey!!!!!

I worked for WaWa once upon a time. WaWa is the Ojibwe tribe’s word for goose after the sound they make. That’s why it has a goose in their symbol.

Four years ago I adopted an African Grey. She's now almost 29 years old and I love her more than anything. Seeing you guys interact and get to know Chaka reminded me of my own first meetings with my sweet girl. She was very hard to get to trust me, she's been through a lot of homes and obviously was already 25 when I got here. But now we live together and I'm so glad for her love and company (the occasional destruction of my bookshelf notwithstanding). I'm a bit jealous of how quickly you were able to pet her and get her to step up, but circumstances were pretty different haha. Anyways you've just made me nostalgic about my girl, gonna go and cut up an apple for her now with some peanuts because she's a spoiled little thing.
Grandpa's African Grey had to be rehomed when he died but luckily the guy a family member suggested fell in love within about 15sec of meeting her. We were sad to see her go but was obviously in a loving and experienced home. She passed away a few years afterwards at an unknown age and buried on a beach in Hawaii, came by way of the US Embassy in Lagos Nigeria and due to endangered species status couldn't leave the state of Hawaii for any reason. Always glad to see an animal friend find a new loving home.

@@beebernal6975 In seconds we knew they fell in love with each other, already had at least one other Grey but she became his favorite. Had been in the family for 20-yrs but we don't know exactly how old she was in 2006 when she moved to her new home.
@@beebernal6975 what you did is much better than what they did. You adopted, and they bought a young bird that will outlive them, and it was hand fed, which causes a number of behavioural issues.
I have now realized whenever Emily says “we are going to” it 95% of the time means Ed is going to do it while she looks at the new creature they purchased 17:05

She was like, I know the smell of that goop lol. It's been over twenty years since I've hand fed a bird and the smell memory immediately resurfaced when I spotted the syringe lol. Grats on your new addition, she's a sweet little baby.

It has a really distinctive smell, but I have no idea how to describe it lol. It is fairly pleasant for such a strong smell, and it has great memories associated with it too.

No, most parrots race to their maximum size as quickly as possible. They prioritise developing flight and being able to move with the flock and not look small and vulnerabl to predators. They work on body mass and social development later.

I love how she made a point to do (and explain) going to the first pet first. I always try to do that whether it be dogs, cats, reptiles. I feel like they all know

It's interesting how different pet bird welfare is overseas. I live in Finland and the minimum cage size for a macaw is 3 square meters. For reference, the minimum recommended in the US amounts to 1.1 square meters. Even the double cage here is smaller than minimum in my country. Won't matter much if both birds get to enjoy open doors but just curious to notice.
On another note, the first thing that popped into my mind at the start of the video was that Chaka had no perch attached in the carrying box. Dunno if that's another cultural difference, but whenever I see parrots transported here there's a little perch for them to hold onto in the box they're being moved in. You can see there's a need for one, since Chaka has to cling onto the door in order to sleep. Birds are just more comfortable when they're not slipping and sliding on a flat surface.
Looking forward to hearing about these two when they get accustomed to one another!
I think the concern with a perch is the bird rotating and smashing its head against the floor. No perch, the bird can hunker down and just slide a bit like every other pet in a carrier.

Not only for birds. I have aquariums and the min recommended size for species in my native Dutch is always bigger than when I google the species in English. Even our goverment site for example sugest that fancy goldfish should have an aquarium off min 1m long while in English you get requirements as low as 40-70litre so that's an aquarium that's only 40cm-80cm long depending on the shape.
@@AVDB95remember that aquariums are measured in gallons here. I usually see 55 gallons (200 liters) recommended for goldfish.

I am glad that Cheyenne will not be alone anymore. But Bird care in America is 15 years behind Austria and Germany. Baby Birds only get hand fed if there is an Emergency and the babies would die without it. Years ago it would be done so the Birds would get more attached to the owners but now it is known that it can easily lead to behavioral issues. Birds can get tame even if they get raised by their parents. Also here the babies only wil go to their new home when they don't need to be fed by their parents anymore. Also it there is a law in Austria which tells you how big a cage/aviery has to be and that no Bird is allowed to be held alone.
I wish that it was more commanly known. Even other countrys in Europe are not aware of this facts or ignore it.
Since 2023 in Austria you are required to go to a course it is called "Sachkundenachweis" (Proof of expertise) when you want to own parrots, reptiles or amphibians
What is als not that known I feel is that Macaws can live up to 90 years. If anyone gets these Birds they should make plans who will care for the Birds when they will be gone
I love how much you love this new bird. It is beautiful. She is so scared but what she doesn’t know yet is that she has the best of the best new family and permanent home. I can’t wait to see her thrive and let her own personality shine through.

A childhood friend's grandpa had one of those, but she was just always in their garden. She could fly wherever she wanted, and she did sometimes, but always came back. All the kids in the neighborhood were so sad when she died!
I love that Cheyenne is so chill! It can be so stressful introducing new family members. And what you said about having an older, well trained, bird to show the younger one the ropes is true for dogs as well :-) when I got my mini aussie puppy my 14 year old dachshund was a champ in helping him join the family! lol although the puppy definitely picked up some of my dachshund’s bad habits too (if all the family’s laps are taken, they will go outside and give a few barks so the other dogs will go see what’s up, then come back inside and steal the lap they wanted. There were a few other devious tricks as well 😅)
I'm glad my dachshund mix didn't pick up the habit my older chao/retriever mix had of dunking his tail in coffee to steal sips discretely. However, said older dog was much more food motivated than my dachshund. That said, having cats around as well gave the dachshund a brief phase where he jumped on tables because the cats were allowed to do it.
@ lol I can just imagine the dachshund on the table indignant that he’s getting in trouble for it! My dachshund liked to steal alcohol and I am glad that didn’t get passed on!

Sorry to be a party pooper, but Chaka is a green-wing Macaw. They are very similar species but the difference is there is no yellow on Chaka's wings.

My first Saturday job as a teenager was in a pet shop... Had one of those large cages dropped on my foot by accident, was very glad of my steel toe caps!!

We got a blue and gold macaw at 11 weeks old. After a lot of research, I hand fed him for a year. He also had his bird food as well. This brings back so many fond memories! Our guy is now 12 years old. 😊
I know this totally doesn't matter, but just because my brain won't let me stop thinking about it 😅 - the gas gauges in the rental:
The gauge with the needle is the physical volume representation of what's actually left in the tank.
The digital gauge is an estimation of how many miles you have left in the tank based on recent miles per gallon usage. With rental cars, this is not helpful since they get such varied use with many different drivers.
It might not matter, but it’s relevant to the video and I for one appreciate the explanation. Thanks….

Maybe a varied system because drivers may be from other countries? That's pretty confusing.
But both gauges have a range showing how full the tank is. That makes no sense.
@@brigidtheirish One gauge shows how much fuel is physically in the tank. One gauge shows you how many miles that tank will last you, which is why there's a number with it. It's not useful in a rental because it's based on how the car is driven and everyone drives differently. It's more useful to someone who drives it all the time, like a single owner, where the computer gets used to how they drive and can learn how to approximately distance to empty. For someone who drives the car all the time and cares about mileage, it'll matter more than someone who doesn't really care or pay attention. I watch mine all the time and am always interested to see how changes in my weeks changes how accurate it's estimation is. Ideally, they should be a pretty close match but if they suddenly don't match well (ie, my fuel tank is almost a quarter full but my car thinks I should have twice as much miles left then I've probably been driving differently than my normal and using more gas than I would typically).

Chaka is such a beautiful bird! And as someone who isnt super knowledgeable on birds it's also a little suprising to me that she isnt fully grown yet, though I suppose many animals tend to grow in size quickly lol
Birds seem so fun! I would never have one because I cannot handle the noise, but they seem like such nice pets.
Non parrot birds are both significantly quieter and easier to are for
Female cockatiels, budgies, and non parrot species tend to be a lot quieter than your average parrot. Of course, budgies and f tiels will occasionally be a bit louder, but they’re not super noisy like, say, conures. Conures vocalize ALL their feelings ALL the time lol
I had a feeling it would be a macaw! She is beautiful and I love the baby noises and movements. Slow and steady wins the birdie!
I know nothing about pet birbs, so this was fun to watch. It’ll be fun to see how she grows!

Absolutely LOVE the new addition to the family. Chaka is precious. I AM curious, since they are i think you said 2 different breeds of macaw (i could be wrong), is there a difference in lifespan between them? What is the average lifespan for macaws in general? I feel like I've heard of some exotic birds living over 70 years..?
They are two different species of macaw they live in big flocks of their own species in the amazon rain forest, and in captivity, they can live up to 100 in the wild it's like 40 to 50 years both are great and beautiful birds but they need alot of attention because the flocks a huge and they love the company
Both species have similar lifespans at around 40-50 years on average, but they have the capability of living even longer 😊
The extreme ages some people say is like a human living to be 100 years. It does happen but it's not the norm.
There are many species off macaws. Hyacints are even bigger and hahn's macaws is the smallest. For example Tyler Rugge's macaw is a severe macaw (one off the mini-macaw species) and he's a lot smaller than the macaws that snake discovery and birdtricks have.

Can i just say how much I appreciate cage size increases over the years? Like I remember my friend who had a cage I wouldn't even put a Sun Conure in that they had a Golden Macca in!! But this was back in the 90's so the hobby didn't have near the same network of information the pet store sold it as a smaller fancy bird and it was taken care of best their family knew how. But now seeing yall set up a double cage for Chaka is amazing and yes totally agree its a perfect cage for just her, I'd never see myself having two birds in there- maybe two different smaller social flocks but never two Maccas
We didn't have particularly large cage for our budgies but they spent most of their daylight hours with the cage door open, we had a budgie sized jungle gym on top of the cage so they spent a lot of time sitting on that or on top of the cupboard in the next room, they did ocassionally fly into other parts of the house.
I wouldnt get budgies, cockatiels or other similarly sized parakeets again unless they could leave the cage.
I think larger birds would be a no as there's too things to knock over while flying around in the house.

Wawa! 😂 Their subs, coffee, and smoothies are what we’ve lived on at times. You made it far enough east to stumble across the most popular gas station/convenience store in my area- they’re almost as common as Dunkin’ Donuts. There’s like 4 Wawas within 10 minutes (though 1 is so old that it’s not a gas station) of where I grew up. 😂
