    Not sure how difficult it was to put together this presentation, but it looks like it was a lot of work. It's greatly appreciated.

    What I learned from this video: replace all of the tongue and groove cedar siding with panels or generally easier/better siding.
    Our entire house is this stuff and it's failing all over the place. No idea why this even exists as siding. Nobody wants to fix it and now it's clear why.

      I've got a cabin with vertical tongue and groove boards that need replacement. I've wondered about doing the panels but then I would need to do the entire cabin to have it match. I was thinking of furring out over the existing warped boards and creating a new wall. Not sure how that would work either. Any ideas?

      Thanks again and you're right, this is usually going to be an easy home repair, as long as you know how to do it.

    Perhaps another install method at 4:22 with "no need to cut off the back of groove". Instead why not pry one side/edge of the next board over, out just a bit so that you can push both new piece and pried piece back into place/flush together at same time fitting tongue into groove as you push the 2 buckled boards flat and snapped into place. Kinda like closing 2 french doors together at same time.

      Great idea and if that doesn't work, then try another one of these methods.

    Kudos on showing the repair diagrammatically like this! It really helps in understanding the repair. Any thoughts on whether tongue and groove siding has changed dimensionally over the years? I have a 1950 built house with original siding that I am looking to repair and wondering if I will be able to find replacement tongue & groove siding to match what is on the house. Measuring it from bevel to bevel its looks to be about 5 3/4" wide, so with the tongue would that make it 6" width? That seems to be the standard width being sold today for tongue & groove cedar planks (1" x 6").

    On the bottom repair
    How would you recommend cutting?

    Amazing video, thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise 👍 I need to replace the bottom section of a siding (last 3 or 4 inches, wood rot). What's the best kind of saw to use to perform the horizontal cut when cutting out the bottom section of a single siding board?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to use a circular saw, just make sure you don't cut into the framing studs, plumbing or electrical.

    So quick question. When you show replacing just a small portion of one board. How do you seal the top cut edge? Caulk? Small pieces of Z bar?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Z bar or if you can an angled cut on both boards that would drain water away and not into the building. If you only have a few boards, you might be able to use sealant or caulking.

    How do you nail your blocks in a level pattern without staggering so you can nail both ends of the block between the studs?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to angle the nails. Instead of driving them straight from the center you will drive them from the top or bottom at an angle into the block from the other side of the wall stud.

    My vertical siding is on the 1/2 top of the wall. The bottom half is stucco. Can I cut all the bottom siding 12 inches and add a board straight across. Will it look funnky since there is already a contrasting bottom of the wall?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know for sure if it would look funky, but I've seen it done plenty of times before.
