    Would it be possible to grow moss on a hooded cloak? It sounds like the coolest costume, some sort of badass nature wizard. I'd use natural fabric so I could give the moss back to the forest eventually. But it'd be fun to keep it going on the cloak as long as possible. If it likes fabric, that seems like an easy way to propagate because you can make a big sheet in controlled conditions and then move it to a good spot outside.
    I'm imagining laying the fabric on a big flat sheet of plastic on an angle. Then to water just pour on the top edge of fabric so it flows and wicks through the fabric and lightly mist the moss itself. Would that work?r Maybe better to hang from a line and setup misters on a timer? Seems like I want to subject the moss to the stress of holding onto the fabric earlier into the process so they hold on strong.

      My Goodness!!! This my good lifeform is an Epic Idea, and is absolutely possible, to use it in a costume or cosplay you would need a waterproof fabric under the moss Fabric,to retain humidity and keep the wearer dry, one could also construct a wall apparatus so that you can mount the cloak or hood, making a live wall when not in use 🥹, that way it has light and access to good growing conditions, I absolutely adore this idea and believe it is TOTALLY DOABLE!!!! 😁

    hi, i was curious as to whether or not you have grown thread moss? ive had some difficulty with it despite following serpa and others guides. when in a vivarium, it gets eaten by the isopods fairly quickly any time it has any notable growth. when ive grown it in a moss-only terrarrium, i can keep it alive for a month or so before it dies back. sometimes it dies for good, sometimes it will bounce back, but i cannot for the life of me get enough growth our of it to harvest it. i will try adding some ventilation and daily mistings rather than enclosed with periodic mistings during maintenance. thanks for the video

      @The-Microverse  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hii!, so I did notice i dont have alot of success with moss if isopods are present, they eat the dead part at the bottom and work their way up, try keeping the moss in a container with only spring tails, try that out, and let me know if it works then the isopods Do eat moss, thanks for watching 😁

    Any advice on which type/ species would be best for air filtration? I am halfway considering (which, for me means "committed, just not scheduled") getting all inventor-ish and building a moss air filtration rig(s) for my house.

    • @The-Microverse
      @The-Microverse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ooooh!!! While I have not personally tried air filteration using moss, I do have some information that could prove usefull, I would start with the larger varieties like sphagnum, or haircap, I would go for a mix of haircap, pincushion (it withstands dryer conditions), if air circulation is going to be constant a fogger or misting system would be advised to regulate the humidity, aim for 70 to 80 % that way by time it gets through the ducts, it should be around 65%, this is super interesting and I would love to know how it turns out 😁

    • @The-Microverse
      @The-Microverse  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      😲 That sounds even better, and more functional than a fogger or mister, can do a hydroponic type system where the water runs through Leca or lava rock ( for water wicking and beneficial bacteria) Fern, string and hypnum moss would thrive in these conditions and then you can build up tuffts of haircap, pincushion or sphagnum on there 😁, I'm getting Hyped... oooh can add a vertical element and get a waterfall going!!! Like a great big wall of lava rock covered in mosses through which air would pass 🥹

    • @newolde1
      @newolde1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@The-Microverseyes this sounds wonderful. I wonder if this would be an effective filter of done on a larger scale. Seems like it might! The only thing I'm a little concerned with is the level of humidity required as I live in an already humid climate.

    • @The-Microverse
      @The-Microverse  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Being in a humid climate could actually be better as constant circulation would be needed and that would reduce the humidity by the time it cycles back into the vents, would need a bit of trial and error to perfect, but definitely doable 😁

      Greetings Moss loving Lifeform 😁, I did try but it dries out too fast, unless you have an out door misting system or a nice big tree for shade and wind breaking, thats why you'll mostly find moss in wooded areas, there are certain types that will adapt or even prefer these conditions, but haven't come across any, could be very interesting to research 🤔

      @@The-Microverse thanks for the input, much appreciated :) if I may ask once more, did you ever tried/experienced providing humidity from the back (directly from/troughs the substrate) of the moss? Let’s say, as some moss grow on the top of a bonsai pot/wet dirt/or whatever it may be, sucking moisture straight from the substrate (with comparatively suitable environment conditions) ps: do you happen to have some names for the species you were mentioning ? I’m inquiring so much since I’m attempting to develop a prototype to allow moss to grow ubiquitously on the most diverse surfaces both indoor and outdoor. And despite being an agronomist and plant researches, I’m not quite familiar with the moss realm ))

    • @The-Microverse
      @The-Microverse  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oooh these are excellent questions my fellow lifeform, the problem with a permawet bog like substrate is mold and slim both of which will out compete moss, however, aquatic moss that is a climated to grow immersed or partly in water can do great, espesially if the area has a waterfall, or waterflow, do keep in mind that terrestrial mosses do need the air humid, and best conditions are usually dryer substrate and higher ambient humidity, but then again there are 10s of thousands of species so i speak of the habd full i have experience with, fern moss, string moss, thread moss, badge moss...etc planning a comprehensive moss movie if you will where i go into great detail😁

      @@The-Microverse that was most interesting my good fellow, most interesting. Do you think that would be theoretically possible to keep them alive and prospering under direct sun with a continuous film of moisture spraying on them? And partially filtrating the UV/IR radiation ? If you have some bibliography you would feel like recommending I would be most interested in it.
      A full movie, fascinating; I would be most happy to know about this project. And glad as well to contribute if I may eventually happen to be of any assistance.

      More often than not, when sunlight is a factor and there is heavy moisture, algea comes into play, it is a bit of an experiment, but if the sunlight is deffused and there is airflow as well as humidity it should be a success 😁, in terms of bibliography I don't know of any dedicated to moss ( I'm not a big reader 😅) however i am also working of a moss book, a sort of pocket feild guide to identify, ethically harvest, propagate and care 😁

    haha that is a funny video man, reminds me of when i washed my first moss to prevent problems and i went "above and beyond", then I noticed i still introduced 1 isopod of the common variety AND the all mighty gods of death, thrips! 🤣 But I don't know which moss I have because mine can also grow very well while 100% submerged under water. To me it looks exactly like spoon-leaved moss which is apparently critically endangered (not because of me LOL), and it happened to be the prettiest on my property. I have had it under water for over a month and it kept growing very healthy. If I had known, i would have put the whole thing in there, but I m convinced thrips can survive anything 🥲 no idea how u guys deal with them in those fancy terrariums without them sickening and devouring all your fancy plants!

    • @The-Microverse

      I only have those cow isopods that are common all over the world i think. I tried them in a tiny enclosed terrarium and they murdered each-other by eating the moss inside of their habitat, so i had to get some myths out of the way since there was leaf litter and very tiny decomposing branches. It s not easy to use those guys, i wonder if the white/purple dwarf ones are better, what has your experience been with those? everyone swears they don't eat live plants too 😅@@The-Microverse

    these are good tips. ive been making some terrariums for a couple years now and learning a lot about moss, but most of my moss hasnt done that well. i suspect its because of being in the sealed terrariums like you said. it seems a lot of people online are basically faking it and make these awesome looking mossy terrariums, but in reality there's no way you can keep them looking that nice for a year, two years, or more. my newest terrarium is a larger 10gal and its not completely airtight and the moss seems much happier, theres a whole patch spreading out and taking over one corner. My favorite moss is american tree moss and I know about a few spots where some grows locally.. but i havent had much success growing it, have you tried that one before?

      @@The-Microverse I definitely believe it does like higher humidity. the patch i found was nestled between the ground and a log, and a few inches away from a stream. its a few feet wide and maybe 2 feet tall, very thick and healthy, its amazing. i made up a little sealed jar terrarium for it and it stayed very wet and recieving some direct sun and despite that the moss survived, despite looking awful. its still putting out new runners/shoots but they don't do well. i want to open it up and give it more air and i think itll do well

    • @The-Microverse
      @The-Microverse  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This moss is a bit finicky when it comes to humidity and aeration, if you can keep its ambient humidity at 70% + while maintaining aeration (I know!!! Thats a pain on its own) it should do well, also try to plant it in a clay type mix like aquasoil dust a little minced sphagnum moss and some water, the substrate might be the culprit, if it grows in clay and we put it in a fluffy ABG mix its a drastic change... more experimentation needed 😁

      @@The-Microverse after this i actually went to my local source and sadly couldnt find any tree moss anymore.. the entire colony seems to have vanished. But i checked my jar for the first time in many months and the tree moss is still trying to put out new shoots, but the old ones are all browned. I think the substrate is actually good, but its too wet and stagnant in there. i had a lot of mold grow in this jar which i havent always had in my other ones. i might try moving it into my 10 gal which has better aeration and seems to be doing really well. i try taking as much of the original substrate as i can when i collect the moss.

      With Aquatic moss i find it will bounce back if its now completely dead, but do keep in mind moss is a slow grower, so it could take some time, make sure the light is NOT direct sunlight and maybe partially change the water, if its not greening within a month its likely dead 🥺
