  • What if we have another way to have moss than from just buying them?
    Forests, river banks, and mountains are some few places where you can find different Varieties of Mosses. Bringing some few home and propagating them systematically can provide an everlasting source of Moss (if you don't use all of them at once).
    Reminder:
    Most of us love to have FREE things. Mother Nature provides us things without her asking in return. But we must be careful on how much we take from her.
    Collect Moss moderately

    Remember to harvest sustainably so you can come back next year or other people can also harvest from that patch, don’t take more than 30 percent of each patch and smooth down the edges. Moss grows very slowly so if you need more moss just spread out you collection to multiple patches instead of taking a lot from one so all of the patches can grow back and not destroy a patch of moss.

      I’m wondering what to do with these big patches of cushion moss I found on my neighborhood Because I know they will die by summer as I live in Southern California. The majority of it already is brown and it’s still winter. But they seemed to have grown really big due to a lot of recent rainfall last month. I want to save the moss and put it in controlled environment until next winter and put it back, but don’t know if it’s the right thing to do. I had a bunch of moss growing in my front yard last year but the entire thing died by summer so I know this will happen for sure with the moss I found in the landscaping. Also I think it’ll be destroyed by landscapers when they come to maintain that area. I live in suburbia with everything looking very manufactured so wild moss isn’t a thing here which is why I want to save them so badly. Seeing these huge patches all brown makes me so sad

      honestly moss is hardy, it can hibernate until the rain comes so removing it will do more harm that good

      @@stancexpunks Brown moss isn’t necessarily dead moss. It is acclimatized to its environment, so I’d recommend leaving it alone.

    I collect moss, add some water and buttermilk, spin it in a blender, and then paint/spray it on a surface and let it grow. If it's in a dry location indoors or out I spritz it a few times a day until it is established.

    This is so amazing! I am excited to get to that next level! Have you had to deal with any pests due to collecting moss from nature? I have a coffee table-sized terrarium that I would love to introduce native mosses to (as there is an abundance to collect from here in the PNW) - but I am afraid of bringing pests inside. Please and Thank you!

      check out the video: How to Propagate Your Own Moss by SerpaDesign. This person using that persons method of propagation, that video goes into more detailed explanation and he does address pests and how to sterilize the moss. I'm also in the PNW and I've got quite a few moss boxes going and looking to get most of my yard covered in moss! Moss is also so easy to plant in-between! You can make moss slurries too, some people use beer or buttermilk or yogurt, things with yeast and probiotics!

      Support drainage: The gravel layer helps the moss planting medium to drain water better, avoiding waterlogging and potential harm to plant roots.
      Create permeability: Gravel helps to create a permeable layer, allowing the plant roots to have space to grow and absorb nutrients.

      Then adjust your terrarium set up. Im in North America with 4 seasons. My moss grows. Collect various ones and put them in your home and see which survives. Its best to replicate their growing conditions. For example I have sphagnum, haircap and thyme moss that grow near me. Spagnum is boggy and acidic, I found haircap nearby under a vociferous tree which probably means acidic, if I collect haircap, I can probably propagate it with the sphagnum and very humid. The thyme grows under trees dappled sun, soil moist, bits of limestone and concrete and lots of decay wood. I would place it in a container that would be more neutral or alkaline.

      Honestly when I harvest moss I onl take a small coin sized piece if it’s a relatively small patch or under 10 percent if it huge and smooth it down
