Realize the constraints they were under, but the whole production suffered from lack of fidelity to the book, to include characters, and too much 'doom' in the background. Filming seemed amateurish to me, as was the music. Richard Chamberlain was completely wrong for the leading role. Tom Selleck would have been better, or Keanu Reeves.
My late father loved the novel more than anything he ever read. He loved the mini-series.
I've spent many hours at Osaka and Himeji castles, and this is all quite familiar. Wonderful.

This made for TV movie pales in contrast to the book. As most movies do.
Reeves was 16 at the time, not a great fit for an experienced sea navigator.
