- The first-ever basketball super-recruit took the state of Indiana by storm in the late 1980s, dominating in front of crowds as large as 41,000, and drawing the attention of Indiana University coaching legend Bobby Knight as an 8th grader. Relive the legend of Damon Bailey, who became a hero in 1990 by carrying his team to an Indiana state championship

i agree staayed all 4 yrs with knight on his ass
@M big ass cap
@M You are either stupid or a delusional fool can you tell me what in the he## soccer has to do with Basketball?
My dad played on the team with him when they won the state championship in Indiana, so it was really cool to see this video. It may not seem like it, but Damon is a Basketball legend in Indiana.
Congrats, and among 42,000 fan's or more. I was there. ;)
And only in Indiana
@@michaelgeorge1712 In one small corner; of a hay farm - the smallest hay farm. If that. LOL
Rex Chapman was better

In all fairness, No athlete can survive 7 knee surgeries and be the same type of player they were prior to being injured. Nobody.....
This is a guy who lived a life of singularity. My meaning is there is really not another person whose life he can relate to. With what he accomplished under the microscope he grew up under and the way he conducted himself, is flat out amazing. I think a lot folks would implode under the pressure.
Never heard of him...but Damm he seems humble and grounded and is passing on whatever he can to younger generations...An Honest Life and a Humble Champion...wish him the Best of Everything...
Just like all the elite players of the past.. he was great when he was great .., he made a lot of people cheer and smile. Thanks good enough .
I'm from NJ where hoops is huge.. St Anthony's in Jersey City... best program in the nation.. and we knew all about Damon Bailey.. he was all world
Jersey represent. #609
Is that where the Bobby Hurley's dad coached?
Bob Hurley and Terry Dehere (The Frenchman)! I was born in Seattle in 1973, Japanese-American, so when you said St. Anthony's, the bell went off!
@@unappealingundesirable2826 ... St. Nicholas of Tolentine was awesome as well.
@@peter-johnb.newman6236 I wonder what it would have been like, being born in 1973 in New York/New Jersey, or India, and watching high school basketball. I know that high school basketball is HUGE in those places. Texas, I think it's more high school football, that's a big deal. Even Los Angeles isn't as hyped up, with high school basketball. We had some amazing high school teams in the state of Washington, but no hyping up the way a Damon Bailey or Bob Hurley was!
Damon Bailey we still love you in Indiana 2019!
I love how humble Damon is. He’s not disappointed with how it ended he’s satisfied with what he was able to accomplish.
Good point. Different sport and different levels but I recently watched the Netflix thing on Johnny Manziel. I was hoping he would have matured some and gotten a level of humility but no, still an arrogant, self-important as*hole who learned nothing. If he doesn't change, I don't think he will live to be 50. Johnny's parents seemed like classic "enablers".
Went to a Final Four (1991-92), whooped up on the Fab Five, went nearly perfect in Big Ten play (1992-93 17-1). Winningest player in Indiana University Basketball history.
Yes, a complete bust...
Patrick Leone wth was Bob Knight on?
They beat em by one point each game ..and he was the the fourth best player on the team..10 points and 4 assist per game. Again, a quality player but not a legend.

Kind of sucks when you hear about guys like this who never could reach their full potential because of injuries or something else. Hopefully this doesn't happen to Derrick Rose like it did to guys like Brandon Roy.
DRose is done.
TheStrangerWithCandy
I hope not, I know he won't ever be in MVP condition ever again but I'm hoping to see him still do good things with the Bulls.
Andrew
He'll be a role player most likely. Bulls should trade him or re-sign him for less then find another great prospect,
D-Rose has been good for the Bulls and Chicago, but basketball is still a business.
Xilen7
go watch his highlights for the past three playoff games, i think you'll change your mind
That's so true. My brother played Div. 1 basketball. Took one too many charges and ruptured a disc. He was never the same again and never could play without pain. The good thing was he always put his education first knowing an injury could end his career at any moment. His high school coach, who also coached Larry Bird at Springs Valley, was a true blessing by teaching all of his players that education was a priority. It's horrible how fans trash players. Damon Bailey had a career at Indiana any player would be proud of. Anyone who can look at his stats as a player in the Big 10 Conference and says differently doesn't know the game of basketball. One player can't carry a team. Just look at Labron James and Cleveland last year.
We saw two layups & a jump shot... Daaammmn..This guy is the G.O.A.T!!
Fuck off. He was one of the best players of this game. He ran to school, practiced, ran back home from 6th grade. His knees were shot by age 21.
+Keith Carey oh sh*t this guy ran as well!!? Well that changes everything... I mean, I don't know anyone who can run.. Amazing!
Ghost Henson are you stupid he was one of the highest scoring high school students
iminthenfl it's a joke. At least show us his ppg or more highlights of him.
Rick Archer he graduated in the late 80s so there isn't a lot of footage of him, but he scored over 3100 points and averaged 28 a game over 4 years. That's more than Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, or Lebron James scored in high school to name a few...
I met him at a basketball camp years ago. All-around good guy!
I remember this kid. He was awesome in high school and college. Great player.
I grew up in Indiana. Wore number 22 and got to meet Damen Bailey at a basketball camp. Still have my autographed basketball today
I used to love college football and hoops. This guy was incredible.
Damon is far from a bust! He did things that all kids from Indiana dream about! He is a legend, and I enjoyed watching every game he played. Bless you and your family and thanks for some great memories.
I love being a Hoosier from Terre Haute, Indiana. I enjoyed watching Damon and Bobby Knight will always be my favorite basketball coach.
Don't think a 2nd round 44th pick can be a bust.
King Patrick VII There's only 2 rounds
There used to be more rounds, in 1988 there were 3 rounds and in 1987 there were as much as 7 rounds and 161 picks.
vince droppin knowledge
Vince Cartwheel Their were only two in 94....
A bust would never play a regular season game tho
Won’t ever be another Damon Bailey. 4 of my favorite years ever watching Indiana basketball while he was at IU.
Larry bird was the best player from Indiana
Over time but that doesn't mean this guy wasn't the best HS player at his position. Christian Laettner was the most successful college basketball player of all time with 4 final four appearances and winning two of them with clutch last second shots.
I think you'll find Kareem Abdul Jabbar was Infact the Most Successful College Basketball Player Of All Time
Elijah Wilkey I said from indiana
LeBron was the greatest college player of all time
Kasey Winborne Thank you
I hated him growing up because he beat my high school in the championship (Concord). Now that I’m older I have much respect to him and his career. He really was phenomenal in that championship game, and I was happy to be able to attend the game which is still the most attended high school basketball game of all time! Sad to see his body couldn’t keep up with his will to play, wish him the best.
I seen Damon playing for shawswick in 8th grade and told my buddy he will win at least one state championship when he gets to high school
ppl trippin.....
This dude along with Chaney led IU to the
final four, The following year they were a
# 1 seed bull fell short in the elite 8.... Dude was the leader of those teams & was a all around player.... Basketball purists understand how effective he was for a short time..... shallow casual fans only care about what NBA players averaged 30pts
brilliantly said! 'shallow casual fans only care about what NBA players averaged 30pts' so much truth.
EveryDayIsAGoodDay Lol
there's merit to both statements man.
Uptown WizKid these people know nothing. those teams were close to what we call "super teams" now... Cheaney, Graham, Reynolds, Bailey, Henderson, Nover, Leary...
Uptown WizKid no he was just a role player on some good teams. He wasn't anything extraordinary, just a solid college player and that's it
The minute Bob Knight came to the gym Damon's career was over.

Yeah blame the coach

Dude, Damon Bailey--if you watched him play--he played with heart and focus--and was obviously FIGHTING THROUGH some serious pain in that knee of his. I haven't seen too many guys like him.
This guy was a legend in Bedford, IN. I haven't lived there since I was 6, but they used to have a sign that read " Home of Damon Bailey". Lol! BNL All Stars

Larry Bird GOAT of Indiana Basketball
Reno you sound bitter
BugsBunny 313 About what?
Stefan Kovacevic Why are you rude?
they did mention him in the video though
GOAT Indiana Basketball player* I don't know if you can consider him the GOAT of Indiana Basketball because he never did anything for Indiana in his professional time as a player, the most important category out of all (HS/College/NBA Player/Staff)
I enjoyed watching him at Indiana, He helped them win a ton of games.
He had a shot at the big time which is more than most can say.
Knees are very unforgiving parts of a body. I hope he can run and walk w/o pain. he is still invovled with basketball and seems to be at peace with what could have been.
41,000 people. Incredible.
I remember watching him play in high school on TV and I'm from Cali. He was nice. It sucks that injuries can take away someone's true greatness. But he still did great as a ball player.
i remember him back in the day. the kid was good, real good. beautiful jump shot. great mid range game. quick on his toes on D. all around good good player. knee injuries only thing that stoped him.
I can't imagine the pressure that was put on this kid, especially playing for Knight.
He couldn't have ended the video with a better quote. Good shit Damon Bailey, keep doing you
I live in bedford Indiana where he played in high school I just chills the whole thing...
DB was not a bust at all. They guy had a great career at IU and played on some very good teams. they didn't win a National Championship.. oh well. He would have been an undersized 2 guard in the NBA, so I don't think he ever had the tools to be a good NBA Guard. does that mean he's a bust? hell no. He had a great career and was a great college basketball player.
+hoobie06 and I am no IU fan. MSU fan here
He actually gained the skills to play PG & did so for years in the CBA.
Even Steve Alford made in the NBA. Wasn't long but he could be the greatest High School player since Rick the Rocket Mount! Came from a basketball family. Boone County. Lebanon, Indiana.Shawn
DON'T PREJUDGE A PLAYER AS GREAT AS BAILEY WITHOUT KNOWING PRECISION FACTS.
HE HAD A TON OF INJURIES, MIXED WITH SEVERE PAIN. Mostly college, but all the way back to hs, too.
Bust doesn’t mean your not any good it means you didnt live to your potential like greg oden. It happens dude
I graduated from Jeff high in the 90s nothing was bigger in Indiana. Damon Bailey was our basketball god. He will forever be the best.
Everyone calling this man a bust don’t even understand the video. This man had a great high school and college career, so what he didn’t pan out in the pros. it doesn’t matter
Anyone identified as a bust doesn't include a high school or college career. The reason is the expectations built up by those careers that didn't pan out as a professional is one is classified as a bust. I don't think he played enough games to be considered a bust. Injuries make you a victim not a bust. Being unable to make a move that freed you up your game may be destroyed.
You was my hero growing up in Indianapolis then moved to Martinsville where John wooden is from . U are a beast
How, as an 18 (17?) year old perform in front of 41,000 😂 like man that’s unimaginable
Met him when we were kids and got his autograph. He was one if my basketball heros growing up. He could draw a foul like no one else.
You really can't appreciate Damon Bailey if you're not from Indiana. It sucks that injuries derailed his career.
I sort of became an Indiana fan there (quietly), just watching how he played! And I'm a NC dude...what does that tell ya? lol. ;)
I know this dude personally and he couldn’t be more humble and low key than anyone I’ve ever met. He’s still the greatest scorer in Indiana high school basketball history and that’s saying something seeing how the game has turned into a 3 point shootout. He’s just a good overall dude
I was born in Bedford Indiana in the 80's. I now live in Ohio. I still remember though the fever the town had for Damon and BNL Allstars. I was 5-6. To this day, when you enter the town there's a billboard that says "Home of Damon Bailey." Lol!
Greatest High School Basketball Player in the state of Indiana. No doubt
Didnt even go first round. And never heard of him in nba crazy how many players fall off because of different reasons.
But I gotta say he gave his heart to the game and I have respect for him
andy odvor why did you put a question mark
that shows how talented the NBA is... best talent pool of all major sports leagues.
Ben Jackson What shows that the NBA has the most talented players?
It says he got hurt at Indiana and was never the same player
Mad respect for how far he took it considering all the pressure he was under. As a freshman at villa park high school I played in a CIF championship game against Edison and it was at angel stadium and still only had about 12,000 in attendance. To think of 41,000 people watching a high school game AND a lot of those people coming specifically to see you play is crazy to me. People who think that’s an easy stage to succeed on have probably never been in a situation like that. Saying this guy is a bust is pretty dumb especially coming from people who have never played collegiate or professional sports in their life lol. The guy gave it his all, you gotta respect that.
Our high school played them...he scored 50 lol
Can't believe I only saw this now. Went to his camp because I live in Indiana and mans a legend
He got hurt physically by the game of basketball and mentally by coach Knight.
i'm speaking in general in life there are certain times u have to mentally hurt others to better yourself period
Bob Knight started recruiting Damon in the 3rd grade actually! I played on a PAL team out of Indy with Damon. Knight would come to Carmel and to Indy and watch our practices. Damon was the “real deal”. Blessings to him and his family.
Wrong! Pat Knight played on a team. Wasn’t yours but he did play on one and Bob would come watch
I think Damon would have been better had he not gone to IU. Bird was smart to pass up IU. Knight had to break great players to get them to fit into his system.
Very smart reply! We are so Lucky Bird didnt play for Knight your dead on!!
Not all players he didn't break Isaiah Thomas
Bird went to IU then transferred
Bird likely would have been just fine at IU. With some additional time together, Knight was bright enough to see Bird's genius and toughness and would have adapted just enough. Damon was very skilled, but he was no Larry Bird. Damon fit in nicely on some really good IU teams before he started wearing down.
@@dontrellblair1719 no. Mike did..lol
I was in high school in Indianapolis at the time. Dude was a certified beast.
He's a good person, that's all that matters.
Damon Bailey to this day is still huge in indiana, and mostly the Hoosier Hills Conference. I go to Jennings county so we play Bedford North Lawrence 2 times every year. Last year some people thought Romeo Langford (also in our conference at New Albany) would break his scoring record, and he didnt even get close lol
why does he looks like jesserthelazee
lazer*
yeah he does!! 😂😂
D B. they are distant cousins, Jesse confirmed in a recent video.
he was a great player. There is no doubting that. His achievements speak for themselves.
2nd round pick, 0 regular season games played... what achievements? Its easy to be good against inferior talent, but he was failure against the best.
Injuries ruin many great players, you have to stop before you try and fail. By going for the draft with preexisting injury, he set himself up for critique.
THE MATREX what a ridiculous comment.
Donavan Doe great high school player but that's about it. He was pretty good in college and did nothing after that
Damon Bailey got buckets back in the day.
I got buckets. I take craps in them. Doesn’t mean I should have an entire video made about me. In fact, all the kids used to call me Rico Buckets. They’d be all “hey look there’s Rico carrying his poo buckets again. My buckets could beat his buckets any day if the week and twice on Tuesday. Fuck his buckets.
Him & Cal Cheaney....
Thanks for the memories in HS and at IU... when it was 1 class bball was the best.
I went to this game. still the most amazing sporting event I ever went to. Damon Bailey was amazing. These negative comments are from people not old enough to know who he was. Just gotta be from Indiana. The sports mecca of America.
XxSirius NibiruxX sports Mecca of America 😂😂😂
Indiana sports mecca of America WTF HAHAHAHHAHAH IM DEAD BRUH you definitely haven’t gone to any other NBA game or sports event ever if that was the most amazing lmao
Josh you must be pretty dumb because most nba games fit 20,000 the arena was filled with 41,000 that’s probably what the population of Indiana was back then!
Um that's boston, new york, or chicago, but I see where you coming from
True class, and I am from KY. RESPECT
You wanna talk about an Indiana basketball star? Talk about Gordon Hayward.
I believe they already did
No doubt. Height and lack of intense workouts helped him. He was a tennis player and took it easy on his body. Damon was 100% hoops and ran to school and back. Everything came together for Gordon. Plus, he is rational and from a good family. Hope he steps it up for Utah.

you got to realize when Larry Bird was in high school they didn't have the 3 point shot if they did have the three-point shot he would be the all-time leading scorer in Indiana high school basketball history by far
As far as I'm concerned, Bobby Knight's legend as a coach is completely negated by his lack of humanity and class. He was a monster.
I agree he's a piece of s*** if he didn't have a little basketball knowledge should be working at the 7-Eleven sell and Slurpees

One of my favorite comments I've ever read.
He was a very good player I saw him play at Indiana for 4 year's injuries held him back
People who think this guy is a bust have never achieved anything in their lives.
+Mark Salazar bust
+SpursFan 9000 the Spurs were a bust this season
Mark Salazar he wasn't a bust just not good enough for the nba
real isrealite - yes he was. He was drafted but after 7 knee surgeries never could play at a high level
That has absolutely nothing to do with him being a bust what kind of argument is that he’s a bust that has nothing to do with others peoples lives 😂
Yup I remember this kid at IU, I wondered what happened to him. Players get branded for getting hurt 7 knee surgeries nobody survives that. 1990s doctors still didn't fully understand the sports science to fully repair ACL / MCL injuries like they do today.
Im 55, had 1st knee surgery at 16, had 4 total including 2 knee replacements. I was 6'10 kid from Philly went to Xavier in Cincy 1982, turned into a great program but I spent more time rehabbing. Damon's a good dude for going thru this.

I forgot about him. Thanks for the update. Glad to know he's doing well and giving back to the game.
I was a colored kid from Anderson Indiana and Damon Bailey was the truth ... He lead his highschool team to the state championship and won it in Indiana. Glenn Robinson from Gary did the same but ask him how hard it is to do that in Indiana and he was 6 feet 9. In 1990 Glen Robinson was destroyed by Anderson in the semi state and the year after escaped by beating Anderson's other team Highland by 1 point. Damon would have been better going to another college like North Carolina or Georgetown but still in my eye's he is GREAT .
Donnie Streaty I.P They dont understand what bball was like back then here. So many good teams in the tournament was unreal.
Cant take ur opinion seriously, no offense. U called yourself "colored".
There is no other Better Basketball College than I.U. Home of the undefeated 1976 team. No one has broken that record! Did I stutter! Shawn
@@shawnbeck2303 I beg to differ, I grew up in Indiana & Indiana University basketball is legendary in the state. But to call them the best ever there's a team on the west coast called UCLA that will beg to differ with you.
It's good to see that somebody can see clearly without looking through a racial based lens.
Man never even played a regular season game in the NBA
Injury changed him, if you watched the video you would know
Correct he never played a regular season game in the NBA and it was not a injury at the time it was the Pacers who used Damon for regular season ticket sales. DAMON could have played for anybody and I wish he wouldn't have given up.
IF Bailey could have played in the NBA, then he would have. He simply was not NBA material.
JASON GOLDSTEIN- YES, dumb ass, he played several regular season NBA games. He never STARTED a regular season NBA game.
He was a power forward in the body of a point guard.
When I think of what epitomizes an Indiana University basketball player, Damon Bailey is the poster boy.
That was back when Indiana high school basketball was actually fun to watch and follow. You could have small schools playing huge schools in the state title and fill the Hoosier Dome because people were really into it. Now, it's all based on school size, so you will never have a David vs Goliath scenerio ever again and you share the state title with several other schools. It's pretty lame.
Kentucky has a tourney with all sizes of schools.
AroundIndiana yea my dad told me about that how there was 1 championship or something like that lol
My dude i went Sherron high school w played w damon at iu....I saw all the best players in Indiana back then, shawn Kemp, Glenn Robinson, Damo bailey, Pat Graham and went to school w sherron and bj flynn when we one the state in 93.....

HEEHEE HEEHEE he got hurt Dumbass
HEEHEE HEEHEE Yes Jimmer is a bust because good players came after him e.g. Kemba Walker
Sorry for my drafts mixed up I guess there was no one good after him except these two scrubs called Klay Thompson and Khawi Leonard
Oh and Jimmy Buttler and Isiah Thomas
Jimmer is playing pretty good in China. he still has his ticket coming back to nba
Look, for all of those who want to know who was the greatest schoolboy basketball player in Indiana history the answer is Oscar Robertson without a doubt. And his legendary status continued in college and the NBA. No one comes close to Robertson.
Having career ending knee surgery does not make him a bust
He was a solid guard at IU. Great player.
7 knee surgeries wow
He was never a bust! He was a high school legend, He had a respectable career at Indiana, hit alot of great shots. He was a smart player, never made the silly mistakes and you never saw coach Knight chew him out in a game.
Bobby Knight, saying what you said about Damon pisses people off. If a player gets injured, they're never the same again. Maybe your actions hampered your ability to recruit top prospects...ever think about that?
That kind of immense pressure is awful. He handled it well. When he got hurt and injured, it was then that everyone else let him down. He was hands down, the best player to ever come out of Indiana. 🏀
Larry Bird
I'm going to suggest there were many others like this. Jeff Lebo and Tom McMillan come to mind.
DuJuan Wagner from Camden NJ was touted in the same way..he played for John Calpari i forget what school at the moment but he suffered some type of non basketball playing illness that ended his career...i think he went to U Mass...

Legends SF he didn't play a single minute in the nba so yes he's a bust
Everyone acts like he was a top 10 pick too. He was a second round pick which now a days don't even make an NBA team ever
+mattfenton36 All second rounders make it now.
I remember as kid from Michigan hearing about Damon Bailey. He was phenom has a prep star
Damon Bailey represented the kind of players Bobby Knight coached at Indiana, ok so he wasn,t Randy Wittman, Dan Dakich, or Steve Alford for that matter, but Bailey could ball.
Steve Alford was busting 57 points in games his senior year in highschool.
lol He was better than Dakich.
Rick Mount and Steve Alford! Great people. AWESOME PLAYERS! SHAWN
i’m growing up and where he grew up and every day we all look at a poster and we all think to be better
You guys have to understand. He wasnt just a good white boy. He scored 54 against all black city teams. No matter who he played he destroyed. He literally had little weaknesses. He had 3134 in his highschool career. That might be the national record. (I dunno that fact)
I know Tyreke Key of Clay Co. Tennessee finished with 3,237 pts in his career. Broke numerous TSSAA Records along the way. Single season scoring leader.
Most pets scored at the tournament. 54 pts in one game. 40 pts in the championship game. Awesome kid too! Humble, well mannered and raised right!
Tyreke is now a member of the Indiana Sycamores averaging 17 pts a gain in his sophomore year.
