  • MIT’s Electric Vehicle Team, which has a long record of building and racing innovative electric vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, in international professional-level competitions, is trying something very different this year: The team is building a hydrogen-powered electric motorcycle, using a fuel cell system, as a testbed for new hydrogen-based transportation. The main hurdle in addition to accessibility has and will be the upfront cost. Not so common metals like iridium, platinum, and titanium most of the time.

    I read the hardest part of this is building a tank where the hydrogen doesn’t all leak out because the molecules are so small.
    Is that true? I don’t know.
    Great piece though! I love it!!! A+

      Yes, I think the team uses compressed high pressure hydrogen which may be around 700 bar and 39 kg/m^3 density. Hydrogen diffusion should be considered because as you said due to low molecular size hydrogen can start material failures. I see that the tank is commercial, probably aluminum or thermoplastic liner with evoh and over them filament wound carbon-glass epoxy composite. The most efficient way is the cryogenic storage with high density but it requires constant cooling source or high thermal insulation even for 1-2 day storage, liquid hydrogen rockets use this way.

      I think the other obstacle is that the fuel cell corrodes over time, in addition to requiring rare and expensive materials, so you will have two components that are consumed over time and must be replaced: the battery and the fuel cell ! For me personally, I prefer a hydrogen combustion engine over an engine powered by electricity.

    • @burakselamet6181
      @burakselamet6181 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yakut9876 Yes, I suppose you are right about your assumptions. But as I said if the hydrogen is stored as a liquid then efficiency would be maximum. In other words, combustion is a fast process and it would highly consume hydrogen compared to the fuel cell. Maybe in the future if we store liquid hydrogen easily then combustion processes may prevail.

  • @lukebowersox928
    @lukebowersox928 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    To be honest, hydrogen storage is the issue. It is extremely hard to store hydrogen for long durations as its the smallest element. Therefore it diffuses through most materials. Storing hydrogen at super high pressure for a long time with an acceptable rate of fuel loss is the challenge.
    Fuel cells are a rather proven technology, the space shuttle ran on fuel cells.

      This is a problem with methane, but we still do it. At least hydrogen doesn't have like 80x more green house effect than CO2.

    Been around cars, bikes, and airplanes my whole life... and now at 65 I've had a pure EV for 5 years. THIS IS THE BEST MIX!
    Lightweight battery pack, then maximize the H2 system power capacity and storage... the energy density would be a HUGE upgrade for EV's. I've often considered getting a fuel cell and H2 storage vessel from a scrapped Toyota Mirai, and put them into my 60Ah BMW i3... a much better "Range Extender" than the BMW 2-cylinder ICE generator. (I've also been a "functioning EE" since 1980, though not degreed... though my eldest son graduated MIT with Masters in EE two years ago, and our youngest is working towards his Mech Eng degree (Aerospace) at Brown)

    Pioneers. Huge respect, fair play. That is awesome! You don't have to beat a petrol / gasoline powered bike, just be as good. Also, if possible, make it rumble between the legs, in particular when you roll on the throttle. That is magic! There's no other feeling like it in the World, and it's one of the wonders of riding a motorbike 😃😄😊🥰
    To compliment all that, it's worth thinking of a way to have it make sound. Just as an option, like being able to choose what engine note you want for the bike. Some love a V-twin, others 4 cylinder, parallel twins, triples, and even those who like a single cylinder note. It's just a nice touch having the sound.
    Best wishes to you all.

    I love the work! Keep going guys! It’s totally possible to hydrogen beat diesel and gasoline speed. Hyperion car X-1 can go 0 to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds, I believe is currently the faster hydrogen super car in the world. So, if is possible to do it in car, so it can be done with motorcycles. I’d love to buy someday a motorcross fuel cell engine. In time, eventually it will happen. We just need to invest in better hydrogen technology cars and motorcycles pieces of engine and everything that is needed to increase it speed and endurance. Although, currently there are comercial obstacles towards how to produce hydrogen, we all live on a hydrogen fuel era currently. The white hydrogen is the most cheap to produce and it is the future of fuel. The Green hydrogen is the most expensive and hard. In time, we will fix all the economic and comercial obstacles, as well the means of production. There are a few vehicles powered by fuel cell currently, like Hyundai and they have hydrogen stations to fill up and it can take less than 5 min to fuel everything. The results are great, emissions is the lowest of all fuel, specially if is from white hydrogen, but I doubt it because white hydrogen is not available in any stations, but is the cleanest hydrogen.
