As a 15 year Subaru technician in NYS as well, I've done several of these bearings. One thing I will add is to check the sealing area of the axle. It is common for it to pit bad enough to allow water and debris to damage the new bearing very quickly. We always include the axle in the estimate.

I have to tell you, I appreciate the video and have all kinds of respect for you guys these days. It isn't easy working on car anymore. However, you did it methodically, safely, properly and I salute you. The world needs more good guys out there doing this work. Sadly, our craft is losing too many people. This is a great example of showing the public what a crappy job us mechanics have day in day out , they simply don't get how difficult a simple job can end up being , with your informative video it shows what a job that should take 2 hours can take all day , but should we only charge 2 hours, the simple answer is NO, I like you quote for a job , if it goes straight forward, but it not , a telephone call will confirm this and extra costs incurred, great video Eric , lunch looks great, enjoy , you deserve it, have 30 mins break with Vanessa , family time

Dang, Mr. O's in an usually chipper mood starting this job. One comic comment after another!
Love the homemade bolt and emery cloth flapper sander wheel. Sounds like an old-school RC airplane gas engine.
24:22 For your backside spacer for pushing in the bushing, maybe you should weld a piece of pipe on it that is larger then the od of the rod to help hold it in place while attaching the ball joint press. You could also weld a small bolt on the front side piece to loosely go inside the bushing.

Mrs ‘O’ IS IN THE KITCHENNNNNN!!
Not watched for a while good to see Mrs ‘O’ in the new kitchen in the office. Some comedic timing as ever, Eric... unless I just have a sick sense of humour and you were speaking sincerely etc.
Can’t remember the amount of times I have used the knowledge gleaned from your good self to fix my little fleet of cars and van. We ‘Roll Coal’ in my family ATM. Many of the techniques used on the rust belt junk seen in these videos pertains to the rust filled junk that I can usually afford to buy(but not pay to be fixed by a Pro) so you have saved me a lot of money and I enjoy fixing stuff too so it’s a double win.
My garage usually has similar noises and comments such as ‘There’s your problem, Lady’ etc and ‘Not a sponsor’ I am only missing the video camera and ‘Jeep’ hat and I think I could make ‘Parody’ videos (although my beard looks more like ‘Santa Claus’ than yours, Eric)
‘Anyhoo’....If I am ever in Avoca I promise not to pass by ‘The Shop’ unless I have a genuine mechanical issue...or doughnuts....or brake cleaner to give you...

When I do these at work, I totally skip the through bolt and drop the differential down far enough to pop the axle out of it. Then go to town doing the bearing. Of course this only works with the hub tamer or something similar. Takes about 20 mins to drop the differential and no need to break bolts or have to mess with bushings. Either way you do this job, be prepared for a lot cussing.

Had to replace the same bearing on my 2017 Forester. Spent hours banging away with a 10lb slide hammer and a hub puller, never even got the bearing to budge. Ended up having to replace the whole knuckle because it had sized so bad. Shop couldn't even get it out. Surprised that one came off so easily, it looked so rusty crusty. Thankfully everything else on mine was in good shape and came free without much fuss.

YEAH! Very professional! The Hub just came away with one pull of the slide hammer. They given up?? You wonder what those shops do with customers cars..... Seems like every car that comes in your shop is dipped in salty brine and rusty; your climate really eats into cars chassis and sealing these suckers seems to be a must before they leave the dealer. great Channel and always look forward to next adventure. Family holiday in a few months in summer? Make sure to take some footage of that too. Always good viewing.

I love how people ignore these sounds and keep driving it until they look like that. That bearing is 6 months over due and then it costs the customers more and they don’t get that. Great job once again :)

I will however join the chorus about needing to eye and ear protection when using Big Nasty and the rattle wrench.

saw a video of a guy cutting a hitch ball in half with one of those diablo carbide tipped blades and thought to myself theres no way! im glad i tried one because i ended up using it to cut the LCA bolts out of my 88 monte, wouldnt have gotten them out otherwise! AMAZING blades, will always have one on hand now!

Gotta say. The chrome on those lug nuts looks pretty damn good.
Had a customer today worried about his aftermarket locking hub bolts being rusted. He installed them himself and all 6 were loose. He did have a man bun and NPR on the radio. I live in Colorado, so rust is not an issue. Skinny jeans, man buns, smoking the weed, and stupidity are the name of the game.
A nice Huth or John Bean exhaust pipe bender may be something to consider man. I rarely bend pipe anymore, but it is a bushing pressing monster.

Man O Man, once the wheel was exposed and then the brake drum, holly cow, the rust. No wonder another shop gave up. Little did they know it wasn't really all that bad once getting into the job. Eric did the job like it was nothing, due to his many experiences of rusty crusty vehicles in his area.
Amazing how many folks have exhaust fans over their cooking stoves and don't use them. After a couple of years all of the grease molecules and smoke will show up on cabinets, ceilings and walls. Best practice is to turn them on a few minutes before cooking and leave them on during the event. Saw a new home tract being built and toured one of them, the kitchen hood was like this one, a microwave/hood vent combo, yet it didn't vent outside ! It was a recirculate hood with charcoal packs. Truly, a complete waste especially on new construction when it's no big deal to route a 6" duct to the exterior roof or wall. Sadly the codes need updated to require them to vent outdoors, period. No hood vent is worth a darn unless it exhausts the stench and grime outdoors.

Damn seeing that Subaru that is mostly rust really makes me appreciate living in So Cal. My Tundra is almost 13 years old and has barely any rust. If I lived there it would be junk. It's amazing how you work through it.

When the wheel cover was removed, I was shocked at the condition/rust on the wheel. Seen your salt/rust discussions before, but the sight of it still is amazing.

Salt is terrible but the new horror is the calcium crap they put on roads, it sticks to everything and you can almost watch the rust process start after driving through some of it.

Not sure if it's also true for Forester, but my old Subaru Impreza used flat bearings and were prone to wearing out, so I changed the rear hubs to Legacy hubs. Slightly larger brake drums and they use tapered bearings which last a lot longer. Only thing is to remember when it's time to replace the drums!
