- Reviewing the Google Pixel 3a XL, a sub-£500 mobile boasting strong value for money and one of the best camera phones of 2019. Here's everything you need to know about the performance, battery life, specs, and how it is to use the Pixel 3a XL as your 'daily driver'.
I've been a strong critic of Google's smartphone strategy ever since it ditched the Nexus brand and launched the Pixels. These super expensive handsets are almost immediately dated because they're released just before Qualcomm updates its Snapdragon flagship platform, and lack the killer features of most (cheaper) rivals from OnePlus, Oppo and others - beyond the brilliant camera results.
However, the Pixel 3a and this XL model have turned things around. You get the same slick Pixel launcher, smooth performance (even for gaming with the likes of PubG Mobile), plus excellent photo and video quality, for half the price.

Did you get the 3a or 3a XL? Unfortunately, not a lot of places around me are putting them on display. I'm swapping from a shitty iPhone SE with a 4" TINY screen and I want something larger, but not sure if XL is too large for my hands. My fingers are large, but my hands aren't large by any means. Just curious how comfortable that 3a XL is in the hand and how easy it is to use with one hand.
@@Filthymutt I purchased the 3a. I wanted something shorter and lighter than my Xperia XZ3 (I still like very much). The Pixel 3a XL is closer to the size of the XZ3, but way lighter. Hopefully that helps.
Katie I would get the 3a instead of the XL, because, I used to have the iPhone 5s, small shitty screen, so then a year later I bought the iPhone 6, and let me tell you, it’s like stepping in a whole new universe when you go from a tiny display to a bigger one. My dad has iPhone 7 Plus, I think it’s about the same size as the XL, I’ve tried to hold it to see what it’s like, and it’s far too big, for me at least, it took my dad a long time in getting used to.
Before you scream at me for using iPhones, I bought the iPhone 6 a year ago from now, I’ll be purchasing the 3a soon.

This phone is massive enough that I don't mind the bezels, no notches catching my eyes and more importantly the battery, my lord its incredible I can have a %49 charge and by the end of the day have %22. It's snappy enough for every day use, and that's all I care about.
I agree I grabbed the pixel 3a and have to say what a great phone. I haven't had a pure Google phone since the Nexus 6 and have to say Google hit a home run with this one. Absolutely love it.
How much SOT can you get from 3a? i really want the 3700mah from the xl but i more prefer smaller screen

I have been very impressed with my new pixel 3a in black. I can absolutely recommend this phone to anyone over any of the competition. It actually doesn’t have any competition it’s a standout winner. Best phone of 2019 YES!!!
Best budget phone of 2019 in my opinion. It will go on sale later this year for $200 to $300 I'm sure.
itsdanschannel I believe if there is any deals coming it will be similar to how they launched the pixel 3a whereby they bundled a google home hub or a Acer chromebook with the phone. Currently they are offering a google home mini with the pixel 3a.. This way they keep the price the same but offer more of their google products to customers for a better value deal. Absolutely 2019 phone of the year and if bought in a promotional deal then you really have got yourself a unbeatable package. The second hand market will have those looking for a lower cost pixel 3a covered too.

This goes to show that we're being ripped of by phone companies to buy their latest tech which they sell at extortionate prices. To me and from watching this there really isn't a need. The pixel 3a XL runs a good 95+ percent as well as the 3xl but for half the price. So it seems that it's not actually the latest hardware that's needed to run things smoothly but more optimisation! It goes to show we're being encouraged to buy the latest and best specced items when there is no need what so ever. I bet 99 percent of people wouldn't know the difference between the 3 and 3a if they were both put onto the same shell....

It's still slightly a rip off when you have midrange Chinese phones with the 855 chip instead of the 670, water resistance, and multiple cameras, but it's the first American budget phone that's somewhat compare to premium models.
@@blackmanwhitesuit You due realize that those "cheap" Chinese phones are made with parts that didn't meet the standards that Apple or Samsung wanted. Also Xiaomi just announced today that they will no longer be supporting their own cellphone older than year. Besides this phone is guaranteed to get updates for 3 years, and get them first. Great camera, snappy UI, simple layout and not mention how much power do you really need? Seriously check emails, send messages,calling people, pictures, searching the web....Unless you have a need for a power house, this phone is perfect for the average consumer. Oh and the repair side is very simple and easy.

This is a big reason why this phone will be more popular, besides having the great camera.
Purchased the device on the day of it's launch in India, been about a month. And, so far, the phone is a real gem! No lags and stutters, camera is epic etc. Only issue is with standby battery life, which isn't so great. But if you're a heavy user, then you'll get up to 6 hours out of it in the course of a day.

For that price now, I rather buy a regular pixel 3. I have seen so many people selling their pixel 3, both new or and used for about the same price or cheaper. Shop around. I got a pixel 3 for 100. Great deal

@@adrianS005 I was weird out when the 3a was released and EVERY you tuber who does phone reviews got a pixel 3a and was reviewing on the same day. They all said a lot of good things and all justified the downgraded specs. Just the phone itself without putting outside factors, it is a good phone for the price. Not bad. But one thing these you tubers need to mention that this phone is one year too late. If this phone was released at the same time or a few months after the release of the regular pixel 3 last year, then I would say it is a bargain and would rather the 3a than the regular 3 based on price alone. However, the regular pixel 3 and the 3xl can be bought for a way cheaper price than the 3a now if people would take the time to look for it. Go to your local craiglist or local app or Swappa and people can easily get one. If Google release a pixel 4a along side with pixel 4 this year, with the same idea and price, then the 4a would sell way better. It is about timing.

Canny review Bonny lad! I would get a Pixel 2 in mint condition from maybe CeX and save yourself a couple of hundred quid.. More or less the same camera Plus you get FULL resolution backups of your pics. Pixel 2 still a strong performer 😁
My first phone was an iPhone and I’ve been with Apple since. I’ve never thought about switching to android until now. Apple finally drove me insane with the weak battery and expensive prices. I’ve been thinking of switching to the pixel 3a xl for a while and now I really want it hearing that it has a longer lasting battery and the camera looks incredible compared to my iPhone!

I got the pixle 3a xl last weekend. Its pretty cool. It took me a while to get used to. But other then that, its pretty good.

I'm kinda having doubts about this phone because of the SD 670, will it be enough to keep going for at least 2-3 years? I'm planning to get the smaller 3a but the chipset is what bothers me, I haven't used this device yet tho.

Get the 3a XL. You'll get three years of software updates and it has a better GPU. Yes the Snapdragon is lower, but I have not noticed any difference between this and my Pixel 2 XL or OnePlus 6t.
@@matthewdavisson thanks for the advice. Actually i was thinking of the 3axl because its newer although not flasghip i think it will just be fine. Especially for its price, i think its a winner. Though the 2xl here where i live is about €20 cheaper & has 128GB hence i was torn between the 2xl & 3axl
I just wish it had much smaller bezels. I'd even take the teardrop notch and it would probably be close to the perfect phone...

I traded in my iPhone 8 for the 3axl and I have to say my last Android device was 2017 we are near the year 2020 and Android has surpassed iOS IMO.

Pixel 3a xl user here. Has anyone noticed a white haze around black text/objects? Especially bottom side of text
The original pixel 3 had Bluetooth connectivity issues. Has either the 3a or the 3a XL had similar issues? In particular connecting to in built car Bluetooth systems?
Not for me on the 3aXL. I bluetooth listen to audiobooks in the car while working and havent had a single drop out. Also reconnects much faster than my previous phone (sony xz premium) after you start the car.
ImpatientTurtle: thanks 👍 it's good to know that cos I've always found iPhones like the old blackberry's (not the android versions) connect to Bluetooth car audio without issues even the old standard Bluetooth in cars.

I am going to buy a phone with snapdragon 617 and only for 83 euros here in Greece!!!!!! Amazing vfm!!!!! The Pixel 3aXL is also an amazing phone for its price!!!!!!
617 is a very old chip.
take a look at Redmi phones, there are some really good deals. It's also easy to install custom ROMs on it. I have a Redmi 5 Plus, Snapdragon 625, 4GB RAM, and with a Pixel Experience ROM it doesn't have bloatware and Google Camera works really well (yes, even night sight). Snapdragon phone recommended for modding
Only thing I have an issue with is the lower quality screen. Not in terms of looks. Looks amazing frankly. It just scratched really really fucking EASY. But I don't care about that as much as I used to. Highly recommend a screen protector and case or skin

I own my Note 8 but the camera is showing its age. I stopped taking pics at all and I have little kids so I want to WANT to take pics. It's annoying to keep hitting the infinity sides on the note and mistakenly tap a new link. I'm kinda into the ole skool bezels and classic way the phone looks. Im excited for the 3a XL to get here this week.

I bought a new Pixel 3a for 299Eur which is ok for the device. The XL is way too big. The normal version is already too big.

@@mohamedmoustafalego7861 Mobilcom-Debitel sells them right now for 299Eur in Germany, if you give in any smartphone, could be a 10 year old brick or some Windows mobile device. If it is a newer one, you even get a plus for it, so if you change in a Pixel 2 you get 150Eur for it and then the Pixel 3a costs 150Eur. I gave in a Samsung Galaxy S I still had laying around.

If you don't care about the latest specs or the high end features I would definitely go the pixel 3a xl I brought for my mother well let's say she loved more than her xr I had the 3 xl yes the big notch you know I love it had launch date i do use a lot more the xs max it hasn't let me down despite the bashing google at timescale they do what they doing I might pass on pixel 4 from the leaks I don't see anything that's a game changer worth the money

I currently have the original Moto Z play which had the huge battery and 625 SD. It still has insane battery life. Probably 8 hours SOT even after 3 years. I've been waiting for something with nicer camera and equal battery life to the mighty Z play. But sadly, even this probably pails as far as SOT. Why can't oems put 3500 miliamp into a phone? Why is it always 3000 or less? This should have a 4000 in it. I never have to leave my Moto Z play charged over night. Just put on charger when I get home for a hour and its good until the next day. And it rarely goes below 50 percent. With this type of charging habits the battery life behaves like new. Nothing, even after 3 years can touch the battery performance of the moto z play. Not even remotely so. But the camera is crap. Its the Achilles heal of Moto's.
Yea same here. Love the phone, still works great. Although still very strong, my battery has lost some endurance over the years. Looking to upgrade because I accidentally damaged the fingerprint scanner. That and I worry about keeping phones for too long and something failing. I'm debating between pixel 3a xl and Moto z4.

I went for the galaxy A70 instead. Only £310, super bright 6.7 inch screen, 4500mAh battery, face unlock, no bezels, more storage + SD card slot. Camera isn't as good but for £150 less then the XL I'm happy

I've heard the CPU does the job of the visual core chip. Main difference will be processing time rather then picture quality. From another reviewer, the main difference is only one camera in front for selfies. But other then that, its about the same as far as the camera. Do you have one?
This and Samsung A70 are the best best 400 bucks phones this year.

SD 835 - better processor than 3a xl
metal back - far superior build quality than 3a xl
Free Unlimited online storage for photos and videos in original quality - unlike pixel 3a xl
Same UI, same camera software, front facing stereo speakers, IP rating, higher res screen.... The list goes on
So, please anyone tell me why on earth pick the 3a xl over the more than 100€ cheaper 2xl?!
Verizon has a sale for the 64 GB Pixel 2 XL for $10/month which comes to $240. That's an amazing deal but not everyone has access to something like that. For those that don't have that option the pixel 3a and 3a XL are a great way to get a premium smart phone experience for half the price.
