    It's not stupid to have a symbol of leadership. The problem arises when you use ownership of it as the means of gaining leadership. Scepters and crowns have been used for almost as long as humanity has been a thing and it worked out pretty good.

    • @jamesweible5357
      @jamesweible5357 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scepter and crowns weren't the same as the dark saber though, possessing them didn't suddenly give you leadership, you gained leadership through other means. But I agree symbols of leadership are always there, we have the white house in the US.

      I’m willing to bet that there have been times where a crown or such being stolen has unnecessarily brought the legitimacy of someone’s leadership into question, because *to* *much* value was placed on the item itself rather than being seen as a mere symbol of the position being held.

The first imperial seal of the Qin dynasty or the physical "Mandate of Heaven" was used by each dynasty of China until it was lost. The ruling dynasty was recognized as the one who had the seal while others are considered by historians to be other factions. There is an example of one dynasty getting the seal while they were still weak and was instantly attacked and destroyed by all other factions. While the seal is currently missing if it reappears it could kick off another war between China and Taiwan

    I have to agree with some other comments. Having a symbol of leadership, like a crown or scepter, is fine. It only becomes an issue when the right to rule comes from possession of the object. It has to be done the other way around. You get the Darksaber because you're the leader, not you're the leader because you have the Darksaber.

    There is a minor but important point that most either miss or don't know about the Dark Saber is that from the time it was taken from the Jedi temple to the time of Maul possessing it the saber was used to choose the leader of clan Vizsla only not the Mandalore. Maul changed that and made it "tradition" for wining the saber in combat to becoming the Mandalore.

  • @Dazzle_Novak_
    @Dazzle_Novak_ ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Also two stupid things about Darksaber ownership:
    Din recieved darksaber just from beating Gideon, not challenging him to.
    With that logic implied Maul was beaten by Sidious, Kenobi and Ahsoka too, does that mean they're rulers too? Since Luke killed Sidious, and is a Vader's heir, who killed Obi Wan, should he also apply for a position of Mand'alor?
    And since that cyborg has defeaten Din, and took his saber, after which Bo Katan took his saber and defeated the cyborg shouldn't she earn the saber?

    As a Mandalorian fan (since the SW:KotOR media and beyond) I 100% agree with you. The Dark Saber is the coolest not worth it prized symbol of the Mando'ade.
    I wish there was more to it than just "you get the object, you get a claim" to the Mandalorian Top Leader ruling. Symbols can be earned and given by the people to their leader (how a crown would be rested unto a Queen/King's head, how the Crook and Flail be symbols for a pharaoh...etc) Or a Natural born leader just becomes so important that one of their prized possessions becomes a symbol to the people during their rule. The Greatest Mand'alor have had the honor of having a title bestowed upon them for their legacy. (Much like old Kings are remembered by certain monickers... not all very positive.)
    But for a culture that has it's way set in the past and a respect of what came before to seek and live for a future -not forgetting that their biggest names were Ultimate BadAsses that shook the Galaxy- it makes a stupid kind of sense that an object becomes as important as the function. which again, is stupid. But Humans and other aliens latch on to simple and stupid reasons faster than complex, merit based systems....

  • @samwilson2250
    @samwilson2250 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Honestly, I prefer the mask over the saber. When you look into the expanded universe the title of mand'alore, (even after the mask was lost to time) was earned by those who proved themselves great warriors worthy of the title and commanded respect from the clans. In a sense the mask was a symbol of that power and respect. Sure, during the KOTOR era many mandalorians did try and become mand'alore without the mask and failed until homeboy Canderous Ordo took the title of mand'alore the preserver. Those that held the title of Mand'alore ended up unifying the mandalorians without a need for a home planet. Meanwhile those that have held the dark saber really only seem to be driven to hold it cause it allows them to rule over the planet Mandalore. In the words of Boba Fett, "You can't rule mandalorians. You just make sensible suggestions they want to follow."

    • @occam7382
      @occam7382 ปีที่แล้ว

      Boba was smart in that he decided to not try and rule over the Mandalorians at all. It's much easier to rule over a desert wasteland that was a former den of criminality and turn it into a semi-decent place to live than it is to rule over a semi-nomadic warrior people who have a very bad habit of needlessly killing things (whether that's other peoples or each other) and try to turn them into semi-decent people. Bo-Katan is incredibly persistent in trying to do the latter, but Boba is incredibly smart in doing the former.

    A similar example from History would be Charles the 7th of France, who at the death of his father was outside Paris. Most of the North of France was under English or Burgundian control and to be consecrated king he had to have a sacred ritual in Reims (occupied by his enemies) cathedral with some holy oil. He wasn't recognized by many vassals and his legitimacy was always put into question. He had to wait for Joan of Arc to free the city for him to become officially king of France and marshall the ressources of the entire kingdom against England.

Tarre Vizsla made the Darksaber as a Jedi, then when he died, his decedents liberated/stole it from the Jedi temple. Now unless they defeated a Jedi using it to defined the temple, House Vizsla did not take it in single combat, they just took it out of some vault or display. Next known owner we know is Pre Vizsla. Did he inherit it when the previous owner died or did he win it a duel? Pre Vizsla never had a problem wielding the Darksaber eve after being beaten by Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ezra Bridger nor Kanan Jarrus had problems wielding the saber and after training from Kanan nether did Sabine Wren. And Bo-Katan didn't have a problem with the saber ether, she just could not keep it. Maybe it does not have to be won in single combat, just taken from who ever has it and not given as a gift. I think the Mandalorian is a success for three main reasons: It can have plenty of melee fights that are entertaining without the force giving certain characters annoyingly high levels of power that drive people off, it has people who similar enough Boba Fett, an extremely popular character, and it actually has the force visible with Grogu, but no matter how strong they make him, he's too adorable for anyone not to like him, again avoiding many people's tendency not to like overpowered characters as much as balanced ones.
    You still have the other stuff, like how it blends samurai and western elements into a sci-fi, and the occasional return of a character or plot element a lot of fans liked already, but I think when considering ALL of the viewers and not only the hardcore, dedicated SW fans who watch it no matter what, it's really those three things that make it work. That or the fact that there's so much bad writing in movies and shows now that every good one stands out like a scaleless argonian wearing a spacesuit and waving a teddy bear.

  • @HellDuke-
    @HellDuke- ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The dark saber is an annoying inconsistency. You don't need to defeat the previous owner, otherwise the whole idea of it belonging to Sabine doesn't work since Gar Saxon was never the owner either. The entire chain of ownership breaks apart since it was never reclaimed from Maul either. Heck, for all we know it was passed down in the Visla clan from the leader on their death bed, not much of a win in combat is it?
    That means just take it by force from whoever has it. Din could have just thrown the saber to Moth Gideon and have Bo Katan kill him and pick it up. They can do that with literally any opponent, weaken them, give them the weapon and Bo Katan defeats them to rightfully claim the saber since it does not matter how the opponent got it just that they had it at the moment of their defeat.

    Mandalorian society is really interesting. A lot of fans seem to not like the (relatively short) era of New Mandalorians under Satine Kryze, but I think it makes a lot of sense that a warrior culture would eventually get fed up with all the stupid infighting and unnecessary death, and realize there is more to life than killing and conquering just for the sake of it and how that could turn you into a hard-core pacifist.
    Notably during Satine's reign nobody cared that she didn't have the Darksaber and the citizens weren't wearing armor every day. Unfortunately that pacifist regime didn't last long and the peaceful society they built was wiped out.
    I also think it makes sense that a warrior culture would naturally devolve into factions that split up into subgroups of houses and clans. The purpose of uniting under one Mand'alor seemed to be mostly for the purpose of conquest rather than the politics of improving their own society.

    So, as someone that hasn't really had a chance to watch all of the Mandalorian or the Clone Wars; When did Mandalorians go from being a culture bound by a a Code and made up of lots of different races/species both born into that Code and brought into it...into a race of Humans and only humans? I mean all the Disney media and everything showing the New Mandalorians it seems it's just all humans all the time. What Code do they follow that makes them Mandalorian? They've gotten rid of the tenet on armor and martial prowess at least.

    • @occam7382

      I'm not entirely sure how the Mandalorians became a human-majority culture. My best guess would be that since humans are the most populous species in the galaxy, they kinda just outnumbered everyone else who joined the Mandalorians. It's a bit weird for sure, but not too out of the realm of possibility.

Mandalorian tactics, technology, and culture evolved specifically around fighting *against* the Jedi. Jetpacks, Beskar, flamethrowers, etc are all things they made to counter the Jedi.
    But we are supposed to believe that Mandalore gave up one of its children to the Jedi Order and then let that child come back and take over? And then used that child’s Jedi weapon and a symbol? Nonsense

    the Dark Saber is pretty similar to a few mythological weapons like the ever famous Excalibur, its predecessor Caliburn or the older Nordic version of Gram
    but i think the main problem is that the difference is that those 3 weapons are linked to magic in some way, all 3 weapons in some version of there story could only be removed from there resting place by the best king for the job
    meanwhile the darksaber is only transferred over to the next mandalore via trial by combat with seemingly no influence by the force (but lets been honest, it seems like the force will punish mandalore if the mandalore is not transferred over correctly)
    the better way things could be done in the future is the dark saber is owned by the mandalorians greatest warrior rather then there ruler turning the title to Hero of Mandalore another alternative is that instead of "you have the darksaber thus you are mandalore" could be turned into "you are mandalore and thus you must wield the darksaber" turning it into a symbol of office like a scepter or a crown
    the mandalorians will need to do some shenanigans to appease the dark saber but i think it can be done
    like you have your typical ways to get a new person into power but the final stage is an honor duel with the current owner, a trial of the people and then a trial of combat to become mandalore this way you cant just kill the current user of the dark saber and become mandalore, you have to lead the people first small scale and work up the ranks to then get the right to challenge mandalore

This still has some power and alot of problems' but I feel like if they are like Din Djarin in the terms of their loyalty to The Way it could work. we have already seen some of the positive effects that the children of the watch beliefs has on its members, a perfect mandalorian society would be a mix of the new mandalorian like bo-ktan but also childrene of the watch

    The billion-dollar cut never happened. The NYPD's budget fell by just 2.8%, dropping from $5.6 billion in 2019 to $5.4 billion in 2022. $5.7 billionus likely due for 2023. The NYPD is notorious for exceeding its overtime budget, as a current New Yorker i like to keep track of that. In fact around the country "defunding" hasn't actually happened, not in the way proponents of hardcore "law and order" have said. budgets of more than 100 cities and counties and found 83% are spending at least 2% more on police in 2022 than in 2019. There's more crime despite the increase in policing. The real issue currently is the increase in prices across the board and corporate pandering, lack of access and affordability to mental Healthcare too. Then corruption within our government. Also there are gangs formed in police like the Banditos, the Regulators, and the Spartans. Along with the Cowboys, and the Reapers . In fact policing is getting worse because the people were supposed to rely on for policing aren't doing their jobs.
    Im not trying to start anything anf of course i came for the star wars content but as someone with family in law enforcement i felt compelled to mention it. I'll take my down votes and berating now.

    Let’s be honest though, I’m not positive that Sabine’s battle should even count for ownership of the lightsaber and title of Mandalore. Maul had to make an actual challenge to the owner. Palpatine beats him even though he technically didn’t state a challenge and rejected the lightsaber, he would be the proper owner unless the owner is the person who kills Maul. So it should probably belong to Palpatine or Obi-Wan. Palpatine gets killed by Vader, Obi-Wan is technically killed in a duel with Vader (he basically gave up the ghost on purpose). Vader should be the proper owner. Upon his death it can pass to Luke Skywalker, the new Mandalore 😂.
    I took a story not about the main characters of Star Wars and made it completely about them. You’re welcome 😂
