  • ‪@sigsauerinc‬ gave Mike the opportunity to get hands on with the SIG NGSW XM250 which is a light machine gun that will replace the SAW and the M240. For all the SAW gunners and machine gunners out there, you know how much of a nuisance the cumbersome and non-intuitive design of the older machine guns were.

    The SIG Rep knows his stuff!!! Seriously, he truly gets the engineering part of the equation. The ammo is what is gonna make this thing incredible. Big Army needs to really put a ton of money and effort into making the ammo badass. As a former M60 and M240 Gunner, I can say this system will be a dream for squad machine gunners. The fact that you have the ability to select Semi is fantastic. Sometime you don't need to dump a shit ton of ammo!! A good optic and an accurate weapon can quickly destroy the enemy with Semi-auto fire.

      Optics are called optics because they are effectively just lenses. The NGSW-FC is called a fire control because it does more than just act as a lens. The Marines have pretty much gotten rid of the automatic rifleman position all together, we are all issued m27s with suppressors and VCOGs as the standard issued rifle, it’s turned into a mess that overall has decreased our effectiveness in my opinion. The IAR was the dumbest contract ever considering the standard M16 already is cable of range far beyond what the average rifleman is capable of. IMO they should have gone with the fight light upper using a Colt LMG style lower receiver. This not only would provide part commonalty, but also a significantly lower overall price, weight, and weapon system longevity compared to proprietary belt feds. They really went with H&K just because its H&K, not that it provided any real advantage as a base of fire or some specific role.

    During WW2 many squad machine guns had a selection switch to let the shooter use it for multiple applications. The Germans used the MG34 for most of the war & it was an incredible dream weapon that could hit targets from a shocking distance, especially when on the mechanical tripods. The B.A.R also had a selection switch. The FG42 & the British top magazine one that I forget the name of did too. Idk why modern military machine guns got rid of this feature, but to me it just makes sense to bring it back!

    That said, I dealt with heavy, too heavy, near ideal weight, and too light cameras for the shoulder. Personal strength, camera balance, then even factors like wind became an issue with lighter cams later on stability wise.

That's something not too many are talkinng about, but this cartridge eclipses the 7.62x51mm as well as the 5.56x45mm. The case is deceptively innovative. It's about two to three bucks a round, and (sort of) available now. Look for Sig .277 Fury, it's the same round. They already released the MCX Spear commemorative ($$$$!), but the cheaper mass production model is coming, and the Sig Cross bolt rifle can also chamber this. As a bonus they also make a full brass load for a bit less money (and less velocity) if you want to just do range training, and it's still a capable round at 60k PSI, with a great BC. And as Lake City starts ramping up to make this stuff by the millions, it'll get even cheaper. Something else to consider, even 316 stainless is significantly cheaper per ton than brass (and lighter), so the cartridge bottom in stainless can actually be cheaper to make and is lighter per round than full brass.
      Also expect to see places like BA, Faxon, etc start cranking out AR-10 DPMS pattern barrels (and possibly bolts) for 6.8x51 DI gas guns, wouldn't be surprised if DD and Knights get in on the 6.8x51 bandwagon converting their current DI 7.62x51 platforms too. And for sure all the bolt rifle players will be doing the same for Howa, Remington, etc actions. Hell, somebody might even make a SCAR-17/20 conversion barrel.

      You have to have shot other MGw and it to understand the hype. They say no recoil because, when the thing feels less than half as heavy as other MGs, when it doesn't push or jump nearly as much as those others, it makes you feel like it comparably doesn't recoil.

    The M240 isn't going away for one simple reason: tanks.
    The M1 tank platform uses M240 7.62 machine guns for both the loader and as a coax anti-personnel weapon for the gunner. While the loader M240 could probably be easily changed over to this new platform with just a mount & pintle swap on the loader's hatch ring, the entire coax system inside the M1 would have to be ripped out and replaced as well as the entire M1 sight and computer system. In other words, "not gonna happen". And if you're not going to change one of them then the other isn't going to be changed either because you want that commonality between the two not only for spare parts reasons but ammo as well.
    As far as the 6.8 bi-metal cartridge itself...why? Who are they switching to a cartridge that can't be reloaded? Can it even be recycled? Granted, it should make range cleanup even easier since poor Private Snuffy can now just walk around with a big magnet on some paracord and sweep the range clean thanks to that new stainless steel base, but how much testing has been done in regards to how two different metals - stainless steel & brass - that are mated with each other survive in bad weather environments over time, especially damp and wet and salt-water environments?
    And how long did the Army actually trial this thing?
    This all seems pretty damn sudden and fast for not only two new weapons platforms but also an entirely brand-new caliber as well as a brand-new cartridge design.
    I have my doubts.

    • @Grenadier-
      @Grenadier- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      See if they had gone with TV sure they would have been stuck with a awkward Automatic rifle as a new LMG but they could have overhauled all the 7.62 guns with just a barrel swap including those in constrained mounts like those in coax positions. Would have also gotten a better rifle out of the deal instead of the spear
