I live in Hawaii. A few years ago we had an emergency notification on cell phones and broadcast on air that nuclear missiles were on the way to Hawaii, I assumed from N. Korea. It ended up being a false alarm that some poor guy accidentally set off, but for about fifteen minutes we thought we were going to get hit by a nuclear bomb. We were looking up nuclear fallout, scale of mushroom cloud, wind direction, where to shelter underground, how to survive a nuclear blast… we called our loved ones and said goodbye. It was the scariest fifteen minutes of my life.

My decision would be to do nothing.
There is nothing you can do. The nukes are going to land no matter what you do. I would never inform the public. There is no point in causing the last few minutes of their lives to be distraught. Responding to such an attack would be that of the attackers. The outcome of the attack would be the support of the people once you go on the news to explain the loss of the people, the question should be why did they attack us in the first place.

This simulation is quite literally a nightmare scenario. There is absence of information due to the fog of war, and trying to get more information takes up time you don't have, giving you absence of action. It's very cruel, and terrifying to think that this could potentially happen

    • @chriskerwin3904

I'd say it's an unrealistic setup. Any president or decision maker in that position would at the very least have a deep understanding of their own militaries capabilities and have some established doctrine around how to respond. Their would also be longer lead up that would provide context to diplomatic situation around the conflict. Countries don't just randomly start slinging nukes at each others population centers. You'd have a lead up that would be months if not years in the making.

    • @aliahdangli3110

Not to give too much spoilers for those who hasn't seen the movie, this simulation reminded me strongly of that movie. One minor disagreement that I have with the video is that there was the "Able Archer 83" incident in which also led the world very close to a nuclear confrontation.

Sure the acting is good but the enemy would not be targeting cities first the first wave of nuclear missles (from both sides) would be targeting the others nuclear assets (silos, naval bases, air bases, mobile launching vehicles etc…) so their is actually not as much deaths as they say within that short time period. Even Russia and china today don’t want to kill everyone they just want to take out the power (millitary and government) of the USA and other NATO members. Then their is the SSBNs wich are nuclear submarines that can go anywhere in the world, undetected, then Launch their missiles then their are multiple launch profiles… blah blah blah. Imagine you are in the situation room facing information from multiple angles, to determine which is reliable and which is not, to listen to opinions not only from your allies but also from the enemy in question. Dear Michelle, with all due respect,
A large-scale nuclear attack on an opposing country's military could be seen as strategically beneficial for those seeking to swiftly cripple the enemy's defense capabilities, potentially leading to a faster end to conflict. By targeting military assets, the aggressor might aim to prevent prolonged warfare, which could otherwise result in even greater loss of life over time. Despite the tragic loss of lives, such an attack could be argued as a means to achieve a decisive victory, thereby minimizing future casualties and establishing long-term security.
Even though it seems inhumane, the OTHER country has done so already, meaning THERE IS NO RIGHT OPTION ANYMORE.
All in all- by wasting time, you just constrained yourself to the remaining time you had, as you had mentioned before it felt like you were backing yourself into a corner.😮‍💨

In your eyes, by your reasoning, in Vasili's shoes, you would've caused most of us to "not had been born", ever; because you would've said Y. E. S.
It's not my intention to confront you in any way, just thought it was an interesting dilemma, which highlights the point of the video.

Also... what about a blackmail option as in "Fire enough to annihilate that entire country. We will stop our missiles if they stop theirs"

  • @282XVL
    @282XVL 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

The scenario is really simplified and in regards to actual nuclear strategy and response options. Their "small scale" is actually known as counter-value strikes (cities, infrastructure, industry) and their "large scale" is actually called counter-force (strictly military, with emphasis on nuclear assets.) They are not mutually exclusive in reality. Pre-set response plans called SIOPs exist for a spectrum of mixing the two and it is also an option to go counter-force first and escalate (or retaliate) using gradual or full send counter value, after seeing what the enemy targeting was. There's also the strategy of which weapons to employ and when - for example you likely lose 90% of your silo based missiles when the timer hits zero so they are use it or lose it, before the incoming strike impacts. But your submarines can be held for a second strike.
    My response would be:
    1. All bombers scramble instantly upon warning. 1 second into the scenario, i want my bombers loaded and safely up off the ground ASAP. They can always be recalled.
    2. Immediate counter force launch with all ground based missiles the instant it is confirmed the Navy was struck. That's the absolutely sure act of war line. Arguably the EMP could be, but the advisors did not seem to have 100% confidence that was enemy action. Bombers released to proceed to targets.
    3. Absorb the incoming strike, see what was hit. And respond accordingly...
    - If the enemy only targeted military assets, order bombers to strike surviving enemy military assets and if no more viable strategic targets, re task for tactical strikes on any enemy mobile forces (fleets or armies.) Stand down submarines, go deep and quiet. These are my reserve deterrence against further enemy nuclear strikes, or escalation to counter value targeting our cities and long term, deterrence against OUTSIDE interference while the country is down and rebuilding. Conventional forces. Finish the fight with conventional forces.
    - If the enemy strike was counter value aimed and our cities are gone, order bombers and submarines to launch a full counter value retaliation and annihilate the enemy economic potential. Including its draft and labor pool. Hold at least two loaded subs in reserve for aforementioned outside deterrence. Conventional forces disperse and withdraw home. Nothing left to conquer and we need the organized forces for homeland disaster relief.

This is the correct response. The average Canadian and American citizen do not have the knowledge of US or NATO military forces or Stratcom SIOP options.
As a layman, I have studied over the years US and Russian military and strategic nuclear forces C3 systems and assets by reading open-source research/books and intelligence.
This nuclear war scenario which takes place over 10 minutes would be incredibly stressful and emotional. Even i would have trouble navigating this scenario.
However, given this situation once a launch is detected and you know that 2-300 nuclear warheads are incoming you are looking at a "LOW" launch on Warning situation like what was seen in the 1983 movie "The Day After "
      That means:
      1) Ensuring the survival of the nuclear TRIAD by:
      A) Informing Stratcom to scramble the B52, B2 and modified B1B bombers to scramble immediately to fail safe points and or alternate airfields in the first second.
      2) Send orders to Deployed USN Subs to target enemy military facilities via TACMO planes.
      3) Immediately deploy remaining Trident Subs from US bases to pre assigned locations.
      4) Launch your 44 ABM missiles plusUS Army Air defence artillery THAAD and tell US Navy Pacific Command to send orders to the guided missile cruisers and destroyers to launch the SA-6 ABM hypersonic missiles to stop enemy warheads.
      5) Disperse all Continental US military forces
      5) Activate the nationwide Emergency Alert System (EAS)
      6) Activate the Civil Defense System.
      7) launch Minuteman III missiles with 8 MIRV containing W-88 300-400 kt thermonuclear warheads for a massive EMP strike. I would launch 25-50 missiles immediately.
      8) Evaluate the conventional or significant Nuclear Strike option.
      9) However, once the US missile early warning system confirms EMP detonation at the 200-300 miles above the US. Then
      10) You enact the Significant Nuclear Strike option which will kill 100-140 million people and cripple their secondary strike capabilities.
This should take 2 out the 10 minutes.
The President can leave the Situation Room for Andrew's AFB for Air Force 1 at this point.
When the ambassador called you inform him of what we know and that the US of America has responded in order to determine future aggressions.
When the Secretary of Defence informs the President that the US Navy has been attacked then you order your conventional forces to attack the enemy.
At this point in the 6.22 time index, there is nothing to do but leave for Andrews AFB for Air Force 1 to leave Washington for safety.
My last point is I had to read your response and I had to think of mine. However, one point that was missing in the scenario ( and something I did not think about) is that nuclear missiles after their boost stage 10 min out from impact can't be recalled. That means YOU DONT HAVE TIME to delay your response and its too late to negotiate with the enemy. If the scenario took place over 1 hour the response and options would be different and far more realistic.. You have to ensure the survival of the country and military forces. Its difficult to make the decision to kill 140 million of the enemy citizens, but the President of the US of America has the responsibility to make these decisions using logic, critical thinking, an understanding of you military forces and deployment and emotional consequences

My last point is that when the US Navy is attacked in the Pacific at 2:28 the "Launch On Warning " option effectiveness is seriously diminished so the actress took too long to make a decision to enact the significant nuclear strike option.

I couldn't do it. I am sitting here tearing up from feeling the stress build up on this side of the screen let alone being in her shoes or it being a real scenario. I am with Michelle- I wouldn't want ANYONE to die so hearing the options and how many would die on either side made my stomach hurt.

I not only grew up during the Cold War but also served. It was a very real time in America. Michelle showed how it could have been like to make a decision like that, and yes it would be very emotional also.
We need to stop taking our freedom for granted, because it could be over as we know it, by nuclear or people.

Most likely our freedom won't be taken away by a foreign country, let alone by a full-blown nuclear war, but rather by our OWN government if we, "the people", don't continue to keep it in check, REGARDLESS of the party that's in power...

I love how you truly put yourself into the situation with your full heart and soul as though it were really happening. I know how difficult it can be, even with a very realistic simulation, to overpower that knowledge in the back of your mind that it still isn't really happening.

I have my degree in emeremergency management. We would do the "zombie scenario". Basically zombies have taken over X state and we need to contain it and control it. The instructor would change the scenario so its flowing and different. Sometimes it just ended up with a mass evacuation order telling people be out by X time or else. Then the origin city would basically be bombed to hell, and any other state or city that that had a massive zombie population. After that we'd send in military to do a "clean up" job.

    • @RamBde

Isn't telling people to stay within closed doors far more safer? I mean if they are zombified, they're behind locked doors, and if the zombies attacks, the civilians are hidden behind locked doors.

@yogammaka That's where. They problem comes in. The instructor would tell us the last know living population, then we'd have to weigh if losing civilians was worth it.

Which in a situation with zombies, who can multiply in numbers exponentially... It's better to glass the area they inhabit, even though there might be civilians. Zombies are a thing that could take over the world if given the chance. Think Cov19, but way worse, lol.
I know your comment is from 2 weeks ago, but this was just my thoughts on the topic.
Its also kind of interesting how rabies might have been an inspiration for the zombie trope, since people become hydrophobic and essentially just want to spread the disease/infection as much as possible before they unalive.

    • @RamBde
      @RamBde 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@yogammaka I'd say zombies are overrated for military. In seige warfare, the armies that comes in thousands has heard to massacre entire cities which comes in hundreds of thousands in strength. That's with spears. An organised army is practically a meat shredder. With guns, zombies really won't have a chance if armies systematically cleaned building by building.
That's without considering drone capability, aerial capability and armored vehicles like tanks, snipers.

But I’m not certain because if this is the actual training that presidents go through then there could be a case for it requiring extra credentials, just in terms of the location, and other background stuff. I do think the average person without having the background of those other videos wouldn’t get this kind of access at the very least.
