    As a colour matcher in a paint store, I quickly spotted a discolouration on the back of the yellow case. Causing it to look a little more orange. It looks like they put heat on it to make it easier to make the hole. When they spray painted it, that same discolouration bled through, confirming the case was obviously burnt and melted to make that hole.

      The plastic is probably ABS, which gets soft over ~100°C. If you use a Dremel with an abrasive tip, that temperature is reached pretty quickly. And once it gets soft, it just gums everything up and gets even hotter and then you end up with the mess you see around the hole. Ask me how i know. 😁

  • @AtomicShrimp
    @AtomicShrimp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +624

    I reckon the last shots in the video were recorded first - the device still has the weird bumpy patch on the back of the case (even though that doesn't match the supposed repair), but in the last shots of the video, the internal fingerprints are gone. I can't quite believe they cared enough to open it up and clean them off for the finale.
    I think there might only ever have been one device, just with the shots presented in more or less reverse chronological order - ie:
    1. Remove the back. Make some holes in it, then bodge a repair with noodles, then replace it.
    2. Finale of a mostly working device (with weird noodle bumps on the back)
    3. Tear down the device, then reassemble it from clean looking new parts
    4. Drill out the noodle repairs, apply dirt and breakage
    5. Hide in a pile of rubbish
    6. 'Discover'
    7. Open and 'clean'

    Instead of there being two, it's common to just film in reverse. Make the assembly while it's whole and nice. Then destroy it and film you cleaning it.
    You may have noticed that the hole patch isn't even remotely the same shape and seems to just be placed on top of the plastic.

This specific device is from Powkiddy, a brand who makes many of these handhelds, and this is likely one of their mediocre ones. This really annoys me, when people just beat up and cover these consoles in dirt just to make these videos. Sure, they clean it up during the video, but there's still likely a lot left inside of it (in the restorations that they don't even take it apart in) And that's assuming they didn't cause any actual physical damage to it like this Playstation Gameboy (patent pending). I saw a video like this with an actual Gameboy Color that had a freaking screwdriver stabbed through it, through the board, and out the other side. Ridiculous. Side note, I love the strange wart that they put on this one instead of just using some sort of resin or something to fill in the damage.

    Couple of yrs ago I stumbled upon a "restoration" channel and I watched one of his restoration videos in which he restores an "old" chainsaw and the first thing that was kinda sus to me was the way he found a chainsaw, he was picking some roots in the woods and there it was just laying it the mud conveniently. Their restoration process was fairly standard for a chainsaw but after he restored it I saw that it wasn't some kind of a well known brand like Stihl, Husqvarna, Jonsered, Echo, etc but a chinese knockoff brand that wasn't even worth restoring. So i did a little digging and I found a similar channel with the same guy and the same background in which he restored the exact same chainsaw, albeit with a different method. After some more digging I figured out that, I shit you not, he had 2 more channels in which he restored that exact chainsaw. So he was basically restoring it, then letting it sit in the mud for a couple of weeks, then restoring it again just for a different channel, and he was doing the exact same thing for some other tools. When I brought that up in a comment I got immediately banned.

    1-Grab your camera and a working gameboy, tear it down, paint it red (no need to record this painting or the tear down) brush it as if you are finishing a restoration and reasamble it.
    2-Make some more shots testing it as if is something you just fixed.
    3-Grab a non working gameboy and let it sit in a swamp for a couple of days and then take it back home.

    I made a comment on another video, but I'll put it here too, there's nothing wrong with cleaning un-powered motherboards with soap and water, you just have to be sure you let it fully dry and don't get any water stuck beneath any components.
    Don't do this with a battery inside/connected, and make sure you drain the capacitors the best you can (try turning it on without a power source, and maybe let it sit a couple of hours without a power source to be sure) but otherwise if there is enough mess, you absolutely want to use soap and water, not waste a bunch of isopropyl alcohol. IPA is good for cleaning up small messes in electronics and when you want to be able to test it quickly without waiting for it to dry. It is not good for cleaning off dirt, grime, and corrosion of such massive proportions.
    You wouldn't want to do this with an LCD screen for example because you'll get water stuck in it when it seeps through the cracks, but a motherboard should have minimal issues. Just keep it unpowered, and don't use too abrasive of a brush that will knock capacitors and resistors off.

      I was going to make the same comment. I worked for nearly ten years in an avionics maintenance workshop and we all found isoprop next to useless for any heavy soiling for exactly the reason stated as an advantage; it simply evaporated too quickly so tended just to redistribute the contamination rather than removing it. Unfortunately,. the cleaning solvents we had previous used had, one by one, been banned because of toxicity or other ill effects (including environmental). When I first started they were just phasing out carbon tetrachloride (which was foul stuff anyway) and replacing with Inhibisol (which was my favourite having a good cleaning efficacy and a fast but not limiting evaporation rate--incidentally, not to be confused with the current 'OS' Ozone Safe version). That was then superseded by Arklone P (not as good as Inhibisol as it evaporated too rapidly--banned as a CFC, similar to Freon) and finally Isopropyl Alcohol.
      For the heaviest soiling we went for a bucket of soapy water and a scrubbing brush followed by a rinse in clean water then a sluice with isopropyl and a nice long drying period. Later I worked in IT and we would 'recondition' grotty keyboards with a similar method--bucket of soapy water, scrubbing brush and lengthy drying. Never had a failure and some went through the process a number of times over the years.
      Power off, batteries disconnected, capacitors discharged and a good drying period.

      I live in Brisbane and that is how we recovered a huge amount of electronics after the floods earlier this year. • @Expertspecter
      @Expertspecter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrPaulMorris A keyboard is a bit different than a full function circuit board. The problem with water is that you can form oxidization and rust on smaller metal components. Alcohol is neutral and will not do that. It usually won't cause immediate issues/brake it immediately. But it will effect overall longevity if integrated metal wiring is compromised.
      You can do it. I wouldn't recommend it.

      @@Expertspecter Corrosion does not occur instantaneously and the risk from washing is no more than from exposure to atmospheric moisture--which will take place over a considerably longer period. Washing of assemblies was included in our training and permitted in work instructions.
