I get why some people don't like it and I do agree it's flawed as hell, but I enjoy the story, the atmosphere, the usual great chemistry between Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill, and I like how the relationship between the Doctor and the Daleks is explored. 7:19 I'm pretty sure that the production crew found the Davros mask the same way Davros himself gets discovered.

At 7:54 right after Davros bumps into a wall, the Dalek operator on the right also lifts its top half from its bottom very noticeably. The Daleks looked terrible all the way from Planet to when they introduced the white and gold ones and it is a huge shame because the technical shortcomings of the natty old BBC props do not do justice to their actually terrific design.

If only! I maintain that the Daleks lost a lot of their autonomy and mystique after this serial. Undoing the cold-blooded, unflinching murder of their creator severely diminished the ferocity and capability of the Daleks. Now they just keep him around for whenever the writers feel like bringing him back. At best, he's used as a middle-man between our heroes and the Daleks, and at worst, he's the mastermind of the whole operation and the Daleks are demoted to his mindless drones.

I've always felt drawn to defend 'Destiny' ever since the late Craig Hinton wrote a scathing review about the VHS release in the mid-90s...but as much as I love it, it is a big step down from 'Genesis'. I always thought the concept of describing the Daleks as robots was because...in this stage of their history they've numbed the inner mutant to such an extent it's just a passenger in a computer-controlled tank. As for slightly-Scottish Davros, his voice over for the recent boxset trumps anything he did in this story

Good review! You raised some interesting points.
I enjoy this story- I have done since I was very young, but with years of hindsight I feel like I can examine elements of it that may seem more relevant now.
Genesis firmly establishes that the Daleks are an allegory for the spectre of Fascism. Davros represents Fascist Leaders. I suppose one could draw vague parallels from the events of Genesis to the second world war- with ethnic genocide, vile experiments with eugenics, and a regime led by murderous scheming dictators.
I suppose in someways Destiny, in contrast, depicts the Daleks and Davros as how fascism was viewed by the "mainstream" media of the western world for a large part of the latter 20th century and into the 21st. The Daleks appear as quasi-comedic, inefficient, parroting drones; with some tonally dissonant scenes of merciless slaughter of the un-like. This sort of juxtaposition was/is common with some depictions of literal fascists within media, (be it "factual" of fiction.) Fascists, as represented in parts of the media, have often been "played for laughs," even when the same source can allude to the real horror and danger that comes with any form of fascist ideology.
The Daleks as machines remove any need for the "racial purity" aspect of their doctrine. Yet these Robot-Daleks still repeat the same old mantras of their forebearers in increasingly in-articulate ways- removed from the original immediate danger of their original context; The Daleks as machines remove any need for the "racial purity" aspect of their doctrine. Yet these Robot-Daleks still repeat the same old mantras of their forebearers in increasingly in-articulate ways- removed from the original immediate danger of their original context; much like how narratives have portrayed fascists. The Daleks in "Destiny" are mindless drones with no real structure other than catchphrases and the occasional tonally dissonant murder, these drones go to lengths to obtain the figure-head they feel the need to bring them relevance again; digging up the symbolism of arcane past, i.e Davros, now portrayed as just as obsolete and irrelevant as the "Daleks" themselves.
Four years is a long time for a Television audience. Davros, as originally portrayed was as vile and conniving as the real Fascists from history. But time had passed and the depiction of Davros in Destiny is the "Disney-fied" version of Fascists as portrayed in popular western media; he looses that insidious quality that allowed the original Davros to manipulate and control his reign of terror. This Davros is a bumbling old relic of a bygone age, with no real threat or agency. Yet within the story, the Daleks now heel to Davros' every ill-calculated whim, their sense of superiority has been replaced by internalised self-hatred and a lack of any direction or purpose-which these now Robotic-creatures project by relying on the nostalgia of genocide. This bumbling old Davros still can twist his followers into blindly bowing to an ideology that serves against their core principles- the Daleks are so mindless that with a word Davros can order them to die for him. Something the original Daleks of Genesis would *never* consider doing.
This vast misrepresentation of this core threat shouldn't work, but it employs and combines both historic and fictional tropes that have both shed light on, and totally underplayed, the real danger of fascist zeitgeist that can grow within society. it could certainly be argued that this blasé attitude towards fascism has contributed to the rise of a new generation of people being indoctrinated by the ever-emerging culture of the "Alt-Right" (the new face of fascism.) With this new context and in light of the tumultuous times we're living in, this episode seems a bit more resonant to me.

Here's the thing, if Destiny of the Daleks had been before Genesis it would work better. Its tone fits in with the prior Jon Pertwee stories quite well. However because it follows Genesis of the Daleks, it feels more shallow and backwards.

If we ignore what we learn in War of the Daleks; How did the Daleks know Davros was still alive after "leaving him for dead, centuries ago"?
Did they check him after shooting him in Genesis & just say "Sod it, leave him"? Not even a whole minute before that, they had killed the last remaining Kaleds, so why leave Davros alive after a botched attempt at killing kim?
If they had returned to Skaro to try and find Davros' research, but found a freshly revived Davros instead, I could understand & accept that.
But no, they were seeking Davros, specifically.

I have a soft spot for this story, I can even defend the "daleks are now robots" plot. The Daleks have become so reliant on logic that they have lost their organic roots and now need their creator to help find themselves again and win the war. Not to mention, the movellans look great, the location work is sweet, Gooderson is giving his all as Davros and the humour does get a laugh out of me. The Daleks however I agree suffer a lot, from a production and writing stand point, they can look tatty and lack a lot of screen presence.

One thing I did like about Destiny was the use of steadycam and absence of music (making the weird looping background effects more prominent) which gave the story a nice atmospheric quality. I think it's a massive misconception that the background effects you hear throughout are recycled from the Hartnell Dalek stories; it's actually the sounds used for the Sea Devils' ship.

By Day of the Daleks there were only 3 remaining, and for Planet of the Daleks they built a bunch of non-functioning wooden props to use in the background, and those were then used as extras and scrapped for parts to repair the main 3 props for the next few years.
By Destiny they were in horrible condition because of bad storage practises at the BBC but they didn't have the budget to repair them. Then in Resurrection in 1984 they had the money to fix them again and make them look decent. But it wasn't until Revelation in 1985 that they completely built new fully functional Daleks from scratch.

@@Gamer208010 slightly unrelated point, but the Daleks in the new series have a similar history of deteriorating props. If you watch The Stolen Earth carefully you'll see Daleks with slats hastily attached upside down, and my favourite bit, the dalek with the faulty eyestalk which suddenly blinks into life when saying "TORCHWOOD"

To be fair, the entire point of the Daleks resurrecting Davros is to enable him to help them think in ways which aren't necessarily "logical". For Davros to then order them to do something they previously considered illogical isn't a plot hole or character error, it was the plan all along.

Saying that they’re robots implies that they don’t have a mutant inside of them and instead are just empty shells. They need Davros to get the mutants and put them inside the Daleks’ casings.

The highest audience ratings for a Dalek story? OMG. I thought the show balanced humour and horror. A problem with the Romana interrogation scene is trying to figure out what those glowing globes are supposed to be. But, for me, its the tatty state of the Dalek Cases and that is more obvious in highly lit rooms. Again, during the interrogation scene, the neck slat on the Dalek in the fore ground has clearly snapped off in storage and then there's the bolt through the head and then there's the climactic Daleks in skirts.

Knowing what I do now about The Chase being an all-out comedy, I do think Genesis muddied the waters. There's the comedic "push the dalek over and cover its eye-stalk with mashed potatoes" style and the Nazi-themed philosophical question style. There's this weird synthesis now that I don't think works. I don't think we could have another Chase unless it was on comic relief. From now on it seems all people want is the adult-themed dalek stories. A bit of a shame.

Season 18 was where I dropped off when filling my gaps in the Classic Series (seen most of Davison and all of the rest). Luckily it was City of Death I watched, which was fab, but the Tom Baker era does start to blend together at this point, for me at least.

I haven't seen Creature from the Pit but with the exception of City of Death I think season 17 as a whole is pretty weak. The comedy gets taken to the point where its difficult to take some bits seriously. JNT made a lot of questionable decisions but I think his initial aim of reigning in the comedy and bringing back credible science fiction in season 18 was a good move.

With as good a thrashing as you gave this story like you did in the old days, it makes me eagerly await the kind of punishment you’re gonna give to Asylum. Especially with how many stories have come after Asylum that made that episode even worse. Now if the Doctor used those exploding jelly babies in the Time War it might have ended sooner instead of dragging out for as long as it did.
