The interviewer is just efficient in what he asks. He doesn't dick around with stupid questions, and he gets them out quickly. Also, he's a good listener. I'm sure artists appreciate this style much more than people who just make corny jokes and stuff. And they seemed to enjoy explaining everything.
@@tonelocrian Idk man, if I was a touring musician, I would totally be down to do an interview with this guy. He's just there to ask quickly then pay attention. Cool guy in my book.
He makes a good point about their compressors, if you have ever tried playing any of their stuff they have a lot of tapping patterns that are pulled off, or hammered on, or tapped at the 21st fret and you legit cannot hear them without compression, for example the sleeping tea outro.
This. I’ve never had a pedal before so I’ve been doing the tapping and hammer ons and stuff raw, and I think I’ve gotten acceptably consistent with it but you literally do need compression as a human being to really pull it off lol. So I just ordered my first pedal, the Warden :)
Anyone wanting to play this kind of stuff absolutely needs a compressor, there's no way to make these taps/pull offs/hammer ons audible otherwise without using tons of distortion. Especially their stuff that's all clean tones, like most of their S/T album. It's really tough to get that level of compression without losing attack and getting a squished sound though, so I really want to look into this model.
@@solargarlic1 U can't forget the booster too. I'm not a wizard when it comes to pedals but compressors compress your signal (lol we all know that) but boosters boost your signal. So basically u can seriously get a more audible tone and compress it!
Definitely seemed so in contrast because it seemed to me the Chon boys really don't give a flying piss rat about button and nobs, they just wanna turn up and play. Don't think they get the same hard on as we all do sat here watching these rig run downs lol
Really liking that the past couple videos had the players actually play their instruments to show off their tone. Definitely make that a thing if possible. Love this show!
I always laugh when bands like this get interviewed, because they're totally like me. Absolutely hyper focused on their hobby, but near useless with communicating with regular humans.
I don't think it's that. This interviewer feels like he is anxious and on the edge all the time while trying to be intimate and sociable. It's irritating, really.
Damn. Haters. I hear you man. Have you seen them talking about their signature guitars? It’s this to the nth. They play like absolute beasts but not so great at the chit chat :)
I love how they are so bad at explaining their gear but that’s only because they focus more on what they’re playing rather than what they’re playing through. They rely more on their own playing than their gear
Yeah dude they play almost completely raw. Look at their first record. You can hear every little flaw in their playing because theres no extra reverb or heavy distortion to hide it.
@@daoyang223gaht damn if there is flaw in that playing I don’t wanna hear flawless. Seriously though their playing is unbelievably clean in that first album. Point out a moment that you hear a flaw and I’ll eat my words
I love how Mario said when their band started out they didn't really use pedals(aside from a tuner) for years. That tells me that they created the heart of their sound the same way many of the Old School guitarists did(player, guitar, amp). The effects are just that; effects. That's good stuff. #respect
I dunno guys, the interviewer’s high energy actually doesn’t bother me at all lol. I love Chon but he is really helping things along, I was so relieved when he asked Erik to maybe turn some of them on haha.
Cool. Matchless is a super fine amp that is a Nashville recording staple now, it has unbelievable beautiful tones and several different models to chose from.
I remember 3 years ago when chon used to just run their shit straight through their amps haha. Not even sure they used pedals pre grow, someone clarify for me.
I always dig the vast majority of the Rig Rundowns you guys do, and not that this is your fault, but I wish that more of the guitarists would just run through the tones and how the pedals sound that they use. Even the little 2 seconds Mario hits here are enough lol
The funny thing with chon. I noticed, is they got super technical and upbeat music, but when they do vocals, it seems to be pop related. Especially the new album. It isn't even like jazz singers or experimental singers they got. But like pop/r&b/hip hop singers. Or what I call club music.
Blacksmith I really like that they aren’t afraid to show their settings and let those fans get their sound, a lot of bands are really secretive of their tones for no reason
Perry is way too excitable here. He's not usually like this. I assume he's a bit starstruck. Still, gotta stay out of the way and let 'em talk. He just sounds so harried that it's hard to take this in the way I wanted to.
This shoot was pushed along pretty quickly because we shot Chon AND The Fall of Troy before the same show at the Mercy Lounge. The opening band's soundcheck got bumped and doors got pushed so we could make booth shoots happen. We tried to get all the members involved and showcase their gear in a sufficient manner while still respecting the show's schedule and the needs/wishes of the venue. Thanks for understanding, and more importantly, thanks for being a fan!
Personally really liked Perry for this, thought he vibed well with the lads considering they're both seemingly quite reserved, and the first time anyones gone a bit deeper than the usual "interview M.O." they've had during their initial exposure period, handfuls of blogs having them basically repeat themselves since the SXSW Show, so.. props.. lol
Fred Garvin tbh, half stacks are pretty much for show at this point. Smaller amps like theirs or even direct units make more sense all around. If youre playing shows at places with lacking sound systems, then yeah, but thats not exactly these guys vibe anymore
I've been a traveling tech for 30yrs. Not one of my bosses put up a 15w combo and called it a day. I'm talking about clubs to football stadiums. I use a sealed 2x12 with 50w in front of it at a club.

I'm certainly looking to see if my local shop has one I can demo tonight
I have the compressor and the Depths. They are both amazing pedals.

@Eddie Gooden the warden is an optical compressor, so it will compress more subtle with less squash than a ross type like keeley's
