A lot of people are giving Vai shit for saying the Jem is the longest running and most successful signature guitar in history. I'm sure Vai like myself knows that the Les Paul is technically a signature series instrument. I don't think he's being arrogant or dishonest considering the fact that he has said on many occasions how much he loves and respects Les Paul for his innovations in the evolution of the electric guitar and sound recording. I don't know Vai's reasons for not mentioning the Les Paul but IMO the Paul is not a signature in the same sense of what a signature guitar is today. The Jem is exclusive to Steve Vai, other people play them but no other guitarist has a signature model that is a Jem. The Les Paul however, is a design that many guitarists have their own signature based on. Slash and Zakk Wylde among many others have their own models that are Les Paul's. The design of their instruments are typically the same as far as the specs of a Les Paul go. Their models may vary in pickups, hardware, woods, and electronics but the shape, style, scale length, ect, are exclusive to the Les Paul. A Paul has become a specific instrument like a strat. Like I said, the Jem is identified with one player while the Paul is identified with hundreds of players. Ibanez has many endorsees but aside from Vai none of them play a Jem. A Les Paul is more like an RG in the sense that many players build signatures based around that specific design. I know the Paul is a signature but its kind of a technicality at this point. Regardless, Vai doesn't deserve such hate for an innocent comment like that. As he has matured as a man and a musician he has routinely checked his ego at the door and always gives credit where its due. He's a great spokesman for the guitar community which is often filled with retards who love to measure dicks by claiming superior chops and musical excellence. I'm sometimes ashamed to be among that community. I have said many times you don't have to be great at guitar to be a great musician. Chops don't always translate to great music. I can play circles around some of my favorite musicians but I don't consider myself anywhere near their level of brilliance. Anyway, that is my opinion on the matter.
+Kris Ross He probably is being arrogant tbh, but, he's an excellent guitarist, and by all means a rockstar. If anyone has a right to be arrogant about something he helped create and a guitar that's made for him, it's Steve Vai. But factually, I would think it is the Les Paul, because it's a guitar he designed, and had his name put on, and it's a name that even people who have never touched a guitar know and respect
The Les Paul guitar is not a signature series instrument. It just bears the name for marketing purposes. Les Paul's endorsement of Gibson only lasted from 1952 to 1961, after that Gibson just used the name and made what they wanted. The only reason that the series still bears the name "Les Paul" is because Gibson already has the trademark, and people know what the name means. The Jem signature guitar was also based on the design of the RG, which was in development the same year (1987). Either that or the RG was based on the Jem.
I think Steve is enthusiastic rather than arrogant. Amazing how he always seems to look so into whatever he is talking about and loves to share info. Reminds me a little of Rory Gallagher in that respect.

Prince Westerburg Yup. I got to meet him after a clinic, sat 8 feet from him for over an hour. He was whipping thru autographs after the clinic until he got to the item I'd made for him to sign. @@scuffyplayramranch5256 I never claimed I was one of the most successful men in human history, nor did I claim to be a guitar god. I was just saying, by his own admission, Steve Vai has not achieved a commonly understood mark of success in the world of music: getting a song on the radio. I'm a huge Vai fan, and I think he is objectively both technically and creatively at the top of guitar players and musicians around the world. I'm just saying, by a specific common standard of success by the music world at large, Vai is not as successful as he could be, or I dare say, should be . His ability and creating is overshadowed by incredibly mediocre talent that is shoved down our throats by the big record labels. We're on the same page, friend. No need to be up in arms.
It's weird when he references to his guitars as 'she's'. I mean think about it, he has over 200 "she's" in a shed behind his house, all hanged up to the wall of which he likes to finger and play with.

I sure wouldn't criticize Steve's facial expressions when he plays (as he commented here) bc its awesome to see him really get so passionate when playing. I don't get how sum of you say he's cocky or any description in that aspect. you obviously don't get his character & personality or music period. He's giving detailed descriptions of what any true fan or musician has wondered about much of his gear or the stories behind the guitars some of us has seen & loved 20+ years! Being so uniquely talented ppl will always try to find negative but i guess shredding a guitar & being him makes it worth it lol. my husband & I both think you are awesome!!!
After seeing this, I'm inspired to write songs. I was amazed with the story behind the DNA Guitar. A great legend sharing his story. Thanks Steve for sharing your story. 👍👍💕

But factually, I would think it is the Les Paul, because it's a guitar he designed, and had his name put on, and it's a name that even people who have never touched a guitar know and respect
Correction, at this point, the Les Paul is a piece of junk with dodgy quality and craftsmanship. :(
The Les Paul guitar is not a signature series instrument.
[taps the guitar] [cocks ear like there's something to hear] "It's a unison." Spinal Tap moment there.
They are the same note at the same octave, however, which is the technical definition of unison
Shhh.....You hear the sustain?
-no
Well you would if it were playing.
😂😂😂😂😂
"Don't even look at it!"
Too funny! Thought the same thing.
Crank it up to 11
Such an inspiration, never change Steve. HOLY SHIT that cabinet or pedals
Missing Rebecca...She really knew her stuff & asked questions which drew out good info from the artists.
She's cute. What happened to her?
She was definitely better than 90% of the interviewers on this channel.
It has an input jack AND a Whammy!
This is one of my fave artist gear videos. They are both such nice people, she's is so good to look at and he's good to listen to.
steve vai is like a creepy uncle that is actually harmless
Your parents don't trust him,but they let you hang out with him.
That makes absolutely no sense, nor is it clever or funny. Let us know when you have something intelligent to say.
1970borntorun What did I do to deserve this!?!
I've met him, he is one of the oldest and most incredible souls I've ever had the fortune to be ushered into the prescence of. You know on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, there is that really tall, thin alien that emerges from the mothership? Well, mix that with the Dalai Lama and and a splash of Jimi and you've got Steve! :o)
I thought it was pretty funny, man. It's cool.
Prince Westerburg Yup. I got to meet him after a clinic, sat 8 feet from him for over an hour. He was whipping thru autographs after the clinic until he got to the item I'd made for him to sign. We talked for about a minute. He was pretty touched and put his hand on my shoulder and told me to keep at it. Not creepy at all. Nice guy.
Nice rack...of guitars
Really nice rack units.
Nice???
Wow. That’s a really big...room
I come back to this video at least once every year to have a good time
i like how after every interview her arm falls limp because she just got done holding the mic up for half an hour
so your "guitar gear" is basically a "guitar store"...lmao
IM IN THE ZONE
I wish I could afford one of your Jem guitars. They look and sound so amazing. And so do you, sir!
Say Steve. Say ya give lots of the guitars away? Man I would love to have the Jem behind you in the first section of this video!!!!!! You are the best!!!!!!!!!!1 Looking forwarded to hearing from you friend!!!!!!
Steve vai is truly one of the most successful men in human history 👏
Is he though? He can't get a hit on the radio, in his own words.
@@Aaron-zh4kj neither can you and your not a guitar god so look whos talkin
No you’re thinking of Phil Collins
The MASTER opening up. Great video. Thank you.
It's weird when he references to his guitars as 'she's'.
I mean think about it, he has over 200 "she's" in a shed behind his house, all hanged up to the wall of which he likes to finger and play with.
Explains his sex faces he makes when playing. :D
Martti Hänninen It could just be all the sexy guitars that he has.
Mega MountainMan Actually yeah that room is really hot and steamy; Oh the crazy things I'd love to do to those guitars.
lol.
Draconequus because it's "la guitarra", feminine in the majority of languages in which genders apply to all nouns
Wow...Who is Rebecca Dirks? Absolutely stunning young lady.
Probably the best of the PG interviews.
If you want your music on the radio Steve, you might wanna look up Linda Ronstadt she's probably lookin for a guitar player.....
13:45. "This is the Stonehenge version"... Lol. Nod to spinal tap.. Such a witty humor.. Lol
Rob all he needs is amps that go to 11 ! lol
Steve's the man. He becomes more so with the passing of time. He's close enough to my age for me to feel a certain affinity. I don't play what he plays, but I listen to him, almost exclusively.
woohoo... Steve Via Rocks...!!
wtf.... he's got size 16 hands....!!
great Rig Rundown Rebeca, thanks ..!!
funny how when men talk to cute women we can't help but make dirty jokes
sure thats how you can tell whether they're into you or not
true!
I like to let the girl make the dirty joke. Then there’s no question she’s into you
i bet even if it wasn’t rebecca he’d make dirty jokes
vai would deffo make dirty jokes no matter who interviewed him, he always has tons of jokes and dirty thoughts, guys funny as shit
Even though he is an ibanez player and artist, I saw two PRS and got so happy cause its great knowing that one of the worlds best guitarists uses guitars that are built less than 30 minutes away
steve vai is the coolest person ever
Apparently, Steve Vai has redefined cool, brother Matthew. And it's about time.
she is so cute
***** who wouldn't
That is one sexy guitar indeed!
INAUD 43 well I am ass respectful as him
in how much scarcity does one need to be in in order to drool over a 5/10 on youtube?
INAUD 43 ass was used as a pun
love this video & seeing his awesome collection!!!
Steve Vai also has a million cartons of Cigarettes so his guitars can smoke a cigarette after each song.
I like the first fabric floral pattern Jem the best.
bratz2 I was surprised!!!! fabric? but there it is
this is by far the best episode
it's got this horn you know "touches the horn" lol
i didn't know bill nye could play guitar.
TheEdward320
STEEEEVE VAI THE SCIENCE GUY!!
Bill Nye is a raving Psychotic lol
Bill Vai, the guitar guy
That's not Bill Nye.
I could listen to steve talk about guitars all day
This guy hasn't been the same< since Ralph Macchio
took him to the woodshed
I love the comment someone made about that movie: he didn't know who did the better acting job - Ralph pretending he could really play, or Steve pretending he couldn't!
rebecca dirks is beautiful
I'd give my first-born to just be in this room for like 15 seconds.
william johnson I gave mine away for hanging with John 5
Sweet. You know Rigo, I've never really listened to John 5, but I know he's all over the guitar magazines. What style does he play?
Rigo es Amor good choice, i would too
"this is the stonehenge version" 13:50 seriously a spinal tap reference? ok i just decided i like this guy a little bit more.
After seeing this, I'm inspired to write songs. I was amazed with the story behind the DNA Guitar. A great legend sharing his story. Thanks Steve for sharing your story. 👍👍💕
Steve making inappropriate jokes.😂😂😂
He was wanting to hit that!!!
