    Win a set of Tosin's signature Fishman Fluence pickups: bit.ly/WinFishm...
    Since our 2013 episode with AAL, guitarist Tosin Abasi has gone back in time (or technology) to use traditional tube heads and pedals, while fellow 8-stringer Javier Reyes continues down the digital rabbit hole with the powerful Fractal Axe-Fx II. Watch as they break down (and demo their) setups with PG’s Perry Bean for over 60 minutes.
    Inspired by the recent spur of ergonomic guitar designs and custom builds he’s played, Tosin has been working with Ibanez on this all-original body for his latest signature that’s been in the prototype stage for over a year. Although it is an 8-string guitar, it has a major belly scoop to reduce heft and increase playability. It has a fanned-fret neck that allows the bass strings to have a longer scale length (27), while the treble strings are on a traditional scale (24.75). Tosin prefers the sound of bolt-on guitars (and acknowledges that this will reduce production cost) and it is loaded with his signature Fishman Fluence pickups. Tosin uses D’Addario NYXL custom 8-string sets (.0095-.074) and Dunlop .73 mm signature picks (similar to a Jazz III, but slightly larger).
    Javier Reyes recently scored this custom-made ESP Vintage Plus 8-string that has a gold Floyd Rose trem and a features the same neck profile and inlays that are on his current ESP signature model. It is equipped with a custom set of DiMarzio single-coils. He uses D’Addario NYXL custom 8-string sets (.0095-.074) and Dunlop .73 mm signature picks (similar to a Jazz III, but slightly larger).

      I think digital modeling amps are appealing for their consistency and ease to transport. Imo any guitarist would take real tube amp and big cab rigs if they could afford it. If anything, it's a sign that he's becoming big enough that he can bring what he wants.

    Being a gearhead myself, I truely love seeing bands like animals and Periphery so in tune with their gear and the exact specs of everything. I’m a drummer so I know all the ins and outs about drums and not so much about guitar but learned a lot just listening to tosin and misha speak of their gear. But Garstka and halpern are both super in tune with their drums and gear as well. They each know the exact specs of their shells, what kinda shells, the hardware technology and the cymbals they pick out is specific for exactly what they want and need in this music. You will be surprised how many bands don’t know shit about their gear and just play whatever is in front of them and if someone asks what gear they are using they just take a guess and try to read it right off the gear lol. Not necessarily a bad thing but love seeing musicians and bands like this who know exactly what they are talking about and these are the artists that companies love to endorse cause they are also helping sell their products. Garstka is the reason I bought tama Starclassic BB birch Bubinga hyperdrive kit with the new updated hardware brought down from the star drums and couldn’t be happier with my choice. Best sounding and looking kit I’ve ever heard or played on with the best hardware and mounting technology ever created.

    Abasi is NOT what I would expect a metal head 8-string shredder to look like. He looks...nerdy. With the glasses and the hairdo and all-black suit, he looks like a very professional, slightly nerdy, mathematician, ready to share a new groundbreaking equation with us. I kinda dig it. It's nice to have some diversity in terms of visual style in metal anyway. The whole long-hair, head banging thing is cool i guess, but it's way overdone.

    • @yaboyreege7158
      @yaboyreege7158 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing wrong with personal preference. Some of us still like those classic Gibson designs, and I’m definitely not a boomer. People that are confident in their playing don’t worry about stupid petty bullshit like this. Modern isn’t always better, and I’ll argue all day that an SG looks better than any of the guitars that these guys play. Some people have a thing called a “job” as well that allow us to afford those amazingly nice Gibson guitars. What people spend on a guitar isn’t any of your concern lol don’t be mad cuz you work at McDonald’s and can’t afford one kid, maybe one day you’ll realize the truth

    • @yaboyreege7158
      @yaboyreege7158 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cohaagen90 i paid only $1500 for my SG standard and that is a pretty fair median price range among many of the other top guitar manufacturers. PRS, fender, Jackson, ESP, and most of the other top dogs all have guitars in this price range. I don’t go for the more obscure Gibson models as I don’t care to spend the money on them. I don’t consider a nicer finish on a guitar or a better wood quality a must have, I don’t feel it affects playability whatsoever. I can say for sure that Gibson has stepped their game up over the past year or two and started releasing quality instruments again. My standard arrived to me in perfect condition and plays/sounds like a dream. I will choose it any day over any other company or model of guitar. It all comes down to personal preference man, some people may not mind spending $3000 on a guitar and others might, all that matters is that you connect with the instrument and it allows you to do your thing. I love Gibson guitars and always will, try one and you may find yourself saying the same exact thing
