This is the most important hiking video in my opinion. You obviously have a tremendous amount of skill and experience with winter hiking. To have someone like you say it’s ok to abort a hike and try another day was a great example of what experience truly is.

Your use of arbitrary was spot on meaning, "based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system". Remember one wrong step or decision can be the end of your hike. God speed, stay safe and looking forward to following you on your journey........... :)

Man,.you will do anything to see Franconia ridge twice in one thru hike, won't you? Lol. You definitely made the right call on that one. It's one thing to deliberately do something crazy when you feel like you can do it. But to do something crazy when you get a bad feeling about it is a whole new ball game. I know many people could learn from your wisdom in this video! And the bright side is, you got to hike a trail you haven't hiked before! Bonus!!!

Awesomeness! That was one wild traverse from South Twin over to Lafayette, huh? Man, you did it in a blizzard! Phew! That wind looked pretty wild. Great call on knowing when to back down, though. As the saying goes, “the mountains will still be there tomorrow” and obviously safety is paramount here. Yes, perhaps the decision was “arbitrary” as you say but, more importantly, it was about self perseverance and preservation. Great job! 👏

I got to stay at the old Guyot shelter right before they tore it down and built the new shelter. Watching you trek through the whites in a blizzard makes my hike in summer wind and rain seem like a walk in the park. And yet it wasn’t! 😆 Excellent work listening to that tiny voice telling you to get off and come back another day. And yes, you are hiking! Your joy is infectious! I’m sooo glad I found your channel! Be safe and have fun 🤩!

My sons and many friends and family have done more than mine years of -10° day time to -20°+ night time temps. Love not having bugs or the crowds. I have found that 12 hr hand warmers are fantastic to keep your boots/shoes and socks warm at night. I put them in the foot box of my shoes and put my socks on top and slightly close then up. In the morning I have warm boots/shoes and socks and I finish using the warmers while fixing breakfast and breaking down camp. I'm bad. Even when it's -30° at night I have a 0° Campmor rectangular sleeping bag in which I sleep in just a T-shirt and a couple of hand warmers in the footbox. I just pull on my umderwesr to get out to take a wizzz. LOL I'm enjoying watching the two of you on your journey. Beautiful scenery. Be safe and enjoy. God bless.

I did the 9.2 Franconia Loop Counterclockwise back in late December of 2009 or 2010 (not completely sure of which year). Hiked it solo in blowing snow along the ridge, and wind chills down to -25. The hike from Little Haystack to Lafayette was the most intense hikes (and possibly the most foolish) I've ever done. Multiple times I was knocked off my feet by strong gust of wind while hiking along the open area of Franconia Ridge. I looked like a rime ice covered popsicle by the time I arrived at the Greenleaf Hut. I was fully equipment with Winter Gear (crampons, snow shoes, ice axe, etc.). I just cant fathom how you can do this day in and day out. Keep on heading South and hopefully I will run into you on the Appalachian Trail in my home State of Pennsylvania (i.e. Rockslvania)

One year there was 9 of us on our winter hike and 31/2' of snow on the trail. We hiked like geese. Each taking turns breaking the way for the others. One section we had to road walk because the snow was 10' so the trail. Thankfully just a small section was unpassable. Your hike brings back some great memories.

Another EPIC Winter Vlog along the AT! Thank you!
I'm really glad you opted to take the early exit to 95. Otherwise, it could have taken weeks for rescue to drag your frozen corpse down. I also don't know how you can breath all that cold air while "sleeping". I tried it once in zero degrees w/ no wind and only "slept" 4 hours while letting in a little bit of fresh air every now and then, to avoid CO2 poisoning.
Keep hiking safe and bringing these excellent videos to us.

I love your positive attitude. That area you are hiking is some the most beautiful parts of the whites. Garfield Ridge can be very challenging even in good weather . The shelter you stayed in that was so nice was built in Vt and flown in and reassembled. Good call on not heading onto the ridge in those conditions. Just wondering what brand and model of sleeping bag and mats you are using. Stay safe, your killing it.

That's the rough part about cold weather backpacking trips. The hiking isn't that bad. For the most part, sleeping isn't an issue (if you're geared properly). However, hanging out relatively still at the campsite gets brutal. To top it off, the wood has been picked over within a half a mile of almost every shelter.

Scott--in a few days, not too long after Moosilauke, you'll be crossing NH Route 25A (not to be confused with Route 25 or 25 C) and headed up Mt. Cube. As you cross 25A you'll see a small public beach on Lower Baker Pond, with a summer camp on its opposite side. Include a video clip of yourself at the beach with the campground in the background and exclaim in your usual cheerful voice, "Greetings from Camp Pemi, Sis-Boom-Bah." I will then make a $100 donation in. your name to an environmental organization of your choice. It's at that camp 49 years ago, where I developed a life-long interest in the White Mountains, an area I still visit (travelling from Michigan) at least twice a year.
Just let me know which vlog entry and the environmental organization of your choice.
    Cheers,
    PaulF
