    Scott, I waited till I was caught up with your videos to leave a comment. I enjoy all thru hikers. They all inspire me one way or another. But you have brought us along on a very unique adventure. This is a different level of inspiration. Whenever you feel alone, just remember how many people are thinking of you and rooting for you. Be safe, and God Bless.

    I have watched a lot of thru hike videos, but this is something else. I hope that everyone watching this appreciates the effort of this venture. From the planning to the physical exertion it takes to do something like this is on another level. I have moments of anxiety at times watching your every step. This is like watching a Nat Geo adventure from the scenery to your emotional reactions of you day to day accomplishments. This is something that very few would ever attempt. Thank you for recording this journey. Be safe , we wii all be watching when you summit Springer

    Dude, that is just outstanding! Congratulations for putting behind you a good part of the worst of your SOBO and I only say “worst” in the context of harsh conditions especially in the winter months. You still have a long way to go and the potential always exists for issues. So, do not get complacent but, seriously, great job! Keep it up and you will be in warmer spots with less snow before you know it…

    Scott, I don't even know you but I am so proud of you! I know it's not easy, but the experiences you are having are reserved solely for someone with the perseverance and determination you keep showing. Thank you for sharing unbelievable views of winter mountains, frozen waterfalls and gorgeous sunsets. I miss those sights so much. Your journey is simply amazing to watch and follow.

    I was on Madison some years ago in the late Fall, the wind was like this, but the temp was in the 40s. For a better sense of just how dangerous this is, read “Not Without Peril” by Nick Howe. A history of all the climbers that have died on these mountains, even experienced climbers, even in August! Be careful, be smart, stay safe, Scott. Awesome work!!!

    So in 1970, January, about this exact time of yeasr exactly as you, I went with two friends from Amherst to the whites, we snowshoed into a place called Crag Camp below Madison, north side, spent a day climbing Madison and Adams (I think) from that camp, and then the next day went from Crag Camp to the summit of Washington and then down to Pinkham Notch center opposite the ski area. This was 1970, we had expedition parkas and face masks and the works, goggles, crampons, ice axes, and when we got above tree line that third day it was screaming from the northwest, blowing really hard, and all we could do is put the wind behind us as we walked 112 miles south to the summit of Washington, high the whole way. Working across the top of the Great Gulf was more than hairy, nearly impossible to see the trail or cairns, It was hairy as hell but we had no choice, it was impossible to drop off the high ridge anywhere and avoid cliffs or falling and we'd have frozen to death. When we got to the Washington summit the temperature was 26 degrees below zero and it was blowing 80 miles an hour, chill factor, like, 130 below. Two of us got frostbite though we were totally bundled up. We wore big mittens, not gloves, with gauntlets coming up the sleeves, my right gauntlet wasn't totally secure and the cold wind coming behind frostbit my wrist four inches from the end of the gauntlet over my sleeve. We got down to Pinkham Notch and then I thumbed that evening 70 miles around to my car only to find the keys were lost, so we had to call Don's girlfriend in Amherst to get my extra keys from where I lived and she drove them up to us, 4 hours, and we couldn't sleep there because it wasn't a place to allow sleeping, people who worked there kept coming in and waking us up, it was a long night. We then drove home. So watching your video brought it all back. I can't believe you could do this with gloves not mittens, without a huge down parka, but you did. I am totally impressed. In fact would say your southbound trip so far, worst absolute time of year, is more than impressive. What's your plan? Finish the AT in, like, early April and then go west to knock off the CDT or the PCT/ You could.....

    • @charlessheldon3145
      @charlessheldon3145 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sorry, walked the 11 or 12 miles south from ther junction above Crahg Camp to Washington, not 112 miles

    • @charlessheldon3145
      @charlessheldon3145 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually I think it was 11 or 1`2 miles Crag Camp to Pinkham notch, with about 9 of those miles abve tree line. It was a few years ago - 52!

    • @lightwalker4558
      @lightwalker4558 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds EPIC! I hope you don't have any long-term effects from it.

    • @charlessheldon3145
      @charlessheldon3145 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lightwalker4558 We were well trained, had done a bunch of smaller winter climbs up there. At Crag Camp there was a building we slept in, actually, had a working piano (!) so we weren;t tenting in -25 to -30 weather, which can get very sketchy very fast. As I recall I had two sleeping bags, my dad's WW2 mummy bag that weighed about 15 pounds and then another one I shoved the mummy bag into, and even so in the morning there was a lot of frozen frost everywhere. We got up there and knew right away this was bad but we turned right, downwind, and started walking, and after a third of a mile we stopped and looked at each other and decided that if we tried to walk back into that wind we'd freeze within fifteen minutes, it was that severe, so we kept on. We were damn lucky. Damn lucky. I see on this great video when Scott made the traverse to Washington he said it was warmer and not much wind., though it looked to me the day before going up Madison it was pretty sketchy. Jim, one of us three, wrote up the trip in the AMC book, came out quarterly, I think, maybe in the winter of 1971, but later Jim was killed in an Avalanche Colorado in 1976. But now Scott is past the worst of it, totally, he still has some high peaks going south but not as dangerous. I really like he''s using a gas stove, not the cannisters, makes me feel like he's old school. Old school is good, conditions like the Whites in winter.

    • @giants2995
      @giants2995  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What an epic tale. Glad you made it off the mountain. Not nearly as harsh up there for my traverse. The weather held true to forecast for us and it made for good hiking. Not the best visibility but mild temps and mild winds made it feel very safe. Cairn spotting wasn’t all too bad either. So glad you’re enjoying following along :)
