    Heyo! I'm back on TH-cam! Just to preface, this is meant to show me connecting with the generous people of Mombasa, Kenya. To demonstrate that kindness to a fellow human is a powerful tool that can bring us closer together no matter how far apart we may seem. And it was everyone's openness to share and willingness help a stranger (me) that taught me this incredible lesson. I hope you took away a similar feeling!
    Update: The nephew I slept in the same room with has learned to solve the Rubiks cube that I gave him!

    I live in Msa. I don't hesitate to help. Bad coz some people have taken advantage of the generosity of the town. They don't wanna work, all they want to do is use lies to hustle u. Like there's this young gal i found sitted on the road at around 8pm. I asked her what was wrong. She explained to me she didn't have anything to eat, her boss had dismissed her. So i gave her five hundred, paid for her boda boda to her place, and gave her my phone number so that the following day, I will help her find some work. She didn't ever call, I only came to find her in the same place some few days later.

      I absolutely agree. I DO NOT want to make this a shouting call that Mombasa is free for tourists. Mombasa like all anywhere or anything in this world is not free. And if anyone that watches this 22min video to the end, and still has that takeaway, then I'm sorry but they completely missed the point. Only a completely insane person would watch this video to the end and say "okay I'm now going to purchase a flight to Kenya and live entirely for free for the rest of my life in Mombasa". Now as a content creator, personally, I have no control of how one random viewer of 1000s interprets my content but that does not invalidate me from being able to post my experience.

  • @abocas
    @abocas ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Being a European in Kenya coast on snd off for 12 years, I have experienced and learned that very few people there do anything for free.
    Sorry, but that is my overwhelming experience.
    They are master-opportunists.

    • @NYONAMATENDE
      @NYONAMATENDE ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Somehow true, but I guess your experience is heavily influenced by the prevailing perception that Europeans are moneyed (which is true anyway). Therefore expectation of “something “ deeply rooted in the African-European interaction. But if you got into a situation that true calls for selfishness, such tripping and hurting yourself while jogging,I don’t think people will assist with the expectation of a financial gain.

    • @abocas
      @abocas ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NYONAMATENDE unfortunately, I cannot write a novel or a guide to "survive" as a foreigner in Kenya/Africa in a comment section.
      But I do have 12+ experience and tend to learn how to navigate fast.
      And I am generalizing, I know, but it is not "the odd one out-generalizing".
      Yes, it is very, very common perception that we grow a money tree in our backyards in Europe. That is not the case.
      Most westerners save a full year or more to go on holiday. Or they live on retirement benefits ( which they worked a whole life to get). An absolute minority are wealthy widows or widowers.
      And Kenyan polio victims, orphans by the thousands, poor waitresses with stomach ulcer and 4 kids at home and on shit salaries can empty whatever you have in a matter of days or weeks.
      They will try to get money to point out a direction for you, having no clue, quite often, where they point.
      I can go on and on.
      Being a reg. Nurse I see Kenyans drop on the street for whatever reason, unable to afford even the smallest amounts of money for healthcare. I must have paid malaria treatment for strangers amounting to 6-digits shillings over the years.
      I have witnessed an epileptic man down on the street and nobody did anything, just standing around looking.
      I had a pre-acute myocardial infarction in a restaurant. People just passed and looked at me lying on the ground. My partner was due to meet me and that's how he found me. And he carried me by himself to a taxi.
      I could go on and on. Meanwhile, I am trying to think of one time I was not expected to pay for anything.
      But I will give you and the video maker .... Kenyans will smile to you - while they try to get your money. That is true.
      Other than that, I quickly learned the socio-economic and traditional reasons for that (opportunist)behavior
      And it's true that compared to the average Kenyan, we do have more money.
      Because:
      We work and we are able to get work
      We have strong and free systems in place (school, healthcare, police)
      We are generally very law-abiding
      We have little to no corruption. And that is probably the most important thing.
      So it doesn't take long to spot what is not working in Kenya.
      And I wish we didn't have to point it out.
      I wish that the billions my country donate in foreign aid, through our taxes, would be put to the right use. And we are just 1 country. There are many, many more countries donating through their governments to Kenya (being the second largest recipient after Tanzania). And now I am not counting the even bigger amounts that we use in Kenya as private citizens and through thousands of small and big NGOs.

    • @charleschacha6876
      @charleschacha6876 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@abocas I see you decided to write a novel, anyway. The thing is, I don't know why you sound so bitter. You could easily stay in your country or ask your kind to point you in the direction of a country that has far better people than Kenyans. I believe there are more than 200 countries in the world that you could vacation in. Why Kenya? 🤣🤣

    • @NYONAMATENDE
      @NYONAMATENDE ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abocas Thanks for that response. I honestly agree with what you’re saying. I dropped out my profession because of corruption. I was fresh from graduation as a lab scientist and a certain doctor took me up to work is his lab before I sat for certification exams. The certification board, while on a routine inspection, visited our clinic and noted that I was not certified. They asked me not to undertake any lab procedures and from then my role was basically transporting specimen from the doctor to an adjacent lab. But they stormed in a few days later accompanied with police and arrested me and took me to central police station (CBD Nairobi). The doctor had to pay 20k to secure my release. What really shocked me was that the board people were still at the station at 8:00pm when I got out. So many people were arrested that day and it was broadcasted on TV (to show that the board was working). Anyway, the talk was that the board officials were still at the station to share the cash bails with police. That was 2010. I have never stepped in the lab nor sought certification since then. I was immensely disappointed. I work as a writer and do a few things online to get by. I truly get what you’re saying.

    • @abocas
      @abocas ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NYONAMATENDE it is sad story that does not surprise me at all. And it is endemic behavior in Kenya.
      I can just picture how everyone "flocked to the table" to get in on the money. Seen it many times.
      And I have no solution to the problem of corruption other information and information and information to the public. But those who would educate Kenyans are up to their knees in bribes and corruption. So it is not going to happen.
      I wish all donors would simply cut off the aid until they see something happening. But it will affect those for whom the aid is intended. And that is not for the government.
      But you not ending up where you aimed to be because of this corruption is quite sad. And it sounds as though you are struggling somewhat.

    To the Tourism Minster of Kenya: Please have the government install seats/benches on the beach and get rid of those scammers with the chairs.
    I have seen so many tourists to Kenya get very upset with these chair people!! They are driving the tourists away from Kenya!!
