  • Big THANKS to FishermensSource.com for submitting these 2 reels for me to tear down and compare!
    Be sure to check them out as they are a great source for some of the best prices on tons of essentials. They also offer free shipping on orders of only $35 as opposed to the 50$ industry norm. Plus they carry tons of obscure baits like these goo.gl/McGMJu
    Videos I make like these I consider to be a bit different than what many call a "review."
    Only after hard use and abuse do I feel it's it fair to label something a review. This is more of an overview that focuses on the differences between a few reels. As I've never fished the Black and blue saltist. (I've fished the sealine. sealine x, silver saltist and the bg...just not the new version so only time will tell)

    Thanks for the analysis! The comparison between the Saltist and Saltiga made me curious so I purchased the Saltiga 20HA set plate, which is metal, and attempted to install it on the Saltist 20H. Perfect fit. Pretty cheap upgrade for anyone that is interested. It's not a 1:1 swap though since the Saltiga set plate is two parts (metal set plate + plastic plate attached by a screw) versus the single part for the Saltist. You'll also need to swap out the screws that attach the main gear shaft to the set plate since thread on the plastic plate is different than the metal plate.

    Great video. I own four redesigned Saltist star drag reels. I don't think the plastic plate would be stressed out by the handle bouncing around over long hauls. It weights practically nothing with the EVA knob.

    The angle of the gear thread is to improve smoothness.Because of the angle more than one tooth can be engaged at a time, this results in a more smoothe transition between teeth, resulting in better overall smoothness, it may not be as noticeable in these low speed situations but in manual shift gearbox in cars the reverse gear is a spur cut thats why as you get faster it hums loudly with some vibration but your other gears are silent unless something is wrong with them as they are helical. Hope that helps, your videos are awesome for technical people like me😁...

    What do you think about the metanium mgl? Considering you have the dc version which you did criticize in a early video for the gears going out. Also I really can’t make up my mind with what I want . AShimano Stradic ci4+ or Tatula lt 2000 Pared with a Tatula elite series ags spinng rod. Another option and why asked about the metanium is to get a jdm metanium mgl and get a Tatula elite series 7 medium action rod. I want a better setup to use for smallmouth river fishing and be able to throw tubes or smaller jigs with more sensitivity for lake/pond fishing up here in Michigan.

  • @logicalrationalfishing7481

    Does smashing that O ring not seal it? Figured it was smaller than the main gear because if a rubber ring was too tight on the outer perimeter it would make a jerky, catchy drag. I guessed maybe it was smaller than the washer so that after pressure was added it "sealed" off. Whether it works or not I don't know, just figure this is why Daiwa would say it doesn't quite fit to the outer area of the brass.

    isn't that the less angle, the power transfer will be higher since pinion gear will create less thrust to the side? the spool axis will be more pressed to the left due to the angle of the cut on the new saltist...

  • @yeahboi355

    This doesn’t have anything to do with this video but I still thought I would tell you. So the other day I was fishing with my penn battle 2 in the pouring rain for hours when I got home I was checking over my reel and I noticed that water was got past the seal at the top of the drag stack. I had the seal greased up a lot the water still managed to get past the inside of the seal into the cap and past the spring and then down the shaft into the drag pads. I want to know if the other penn reels like the slammer have this problem?

    • @yeahboi355
      @yeahboi355 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I it would be cool to test this on the new spinfisher. You could put the reel submerged under water and tighten and loosen the drag cap and pull out line under heavy drag and light drag then take the drag and spool apart to see if the water got through the top seal.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if it's common. But it definitely is possible with a design that allows water to get under the knob in a spot where it can just sit. Part of the reason why I showed concern with drag binding on the slammer. I'll check..but it's going to be done a bit differently. Im filming a spinfisher baitrunner video where i'm doing a pre inspection prior to sending it to Elias V to destroy....and then do a part 2 when Elias sends it back to me a week before the reels are due to launch. So I'll just dunk the spool and shaft...without it being on the reel. FYI heavily greased carbon fiber drag stacks do well with water. Much better than oiled or greased felt

    OK, I am going to throw a spanner into the works if I may. LOL. Both the Saltiga Star Drag and Trinidad A are way more expensive at $450 and above plus they don't have more drag neither. The Saltist Star Drag starts at $240, I am thinking there might be 3 contenders which might be able to give it a run for its money. 1) Torium (which starts at $220), 2) Maxel Hybrid (which stars at $280) and 3) Accurate Tern (which starts at $280). What do you reckon? Do you have any viewpoints on those 3?

      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man! What are you using it for

    • @Rascallucci
      @Rascallucci 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if is a star drag, the advantage is it is far easier to cast out baits, so I would say may be land-based live-baiting? Or may be a bit of inshore bottom fishing? I mean if is straight up and down from a boat, then I would of course prefer to use a lever drag. Another possibility is light and slow jigging perhaps? Anything heavier will have to be lever drag I think.

    Always ask your opinion when it comes to the spinning gear especially, out of these compared to that new Penn. I've never owned a Penn but liked the sound of the new Spinfisher you went over several vids back.

    • @bassnazi4713
      @bassnazi4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Btw, I think your logic on the gears is spot on. Shimano pretty much markets the Micromodule gearing based off of the more contact. I still don't really think their concept of it makes much of a difference in comparison to larger teeth though as long as they are machined good enough to meld. I would think the larger, deeper teeth would actually tend to hold grease better honestly, but totally like you in saying I don't know the specifics just from using different ones.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man! The new Spinfishers on paper are the best in the price range in terms of being tools to get the job done and last. That I've ever seen. Just like the BG was the best 100$ reel since the year 2000's stradics. I'm filming a tear down and overview of one of them now. (part 1)..As I'll be sending one to Elias V to beat up on...and we'll find out through his surf launching abuse if it can survive....My goal being to get the reel back and put out a part 2 (after elias vid) a week before launch.....((((I don't think penn thought I was going to do something like that....lol...Both Elias and myself are far from Penn fans...and none of us are loyal to anything other than gear that works.)))

      @bassnazi4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that is part of why i asked. Like i said, I've never used any of their stuff. Looking forward to the vids man as always.

    • @bassnazi4713
      @bassnazi4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Btw, thanks for not hanging up on the difference in casters and spinning. My main concern was the comparison on price, since like you said on the other vid it was looking like a steal. Not gonna name the other channel since we've discussed it before and you know it all to well, but if you ask a question about comparison it usually comes across your comparing apples and oranges when both can be used for many of the same applications. I still use a decent bit of round casters even when in freshwater for the larger catfish since the torque and line capacity help and weight isn't a factor since your not continuously casting. The $100 Lew's actually works fairly well for it, although it's not gonna compare to a Morrum. Still kinda want to try the Abu Beast round to see if it's any closer to the Morrum or if it's better to just drop the additional cash.

      Hey Zack,
      Glad you enjoyed it!
      I prefer a wet rag then a rag with corrosion x and just wipe em down.
      I don't like hosing down reels after a run....I find it causes more issues causes so many problems in the long run. Pushing salt thats dried further into the reel.
      And yeah...I get it...a full day or an overnight run....you just feel like hosing down a lineup......But I try my best to avoid that. And often remove my gear from the hose down line lol.. (often the hoses at the marinas are have just a cut off end so the pressure isn't even that high..and it's still enough to get stuff that's on the outside where it shouldn't be. .I never knew shimano recommended that. The key is saltwater....and salt crystals.....and don't push em inside.....learn your gear and if something seems off....chances are it is......and preventative maintenance is key.

      Sup man....Trying too. Unfortunately I'm finding that to do it RIGHT...is not easy. I invested in a new filming rig that I have found needs some more dialing in. As I didn't really like the look of the last vid. Besides the money being !@#$ :)
      PUtting months of time on a reel to review it accurately. Doesn't get any views...and views go to the early birds that put out the unboxings and "reviews" which are nothing more than hey look I turned the handle. Get all the views. I've also had to stop taking on reels from subscribers after receiving some advice after receiving a threat. Which is part of the reason I accepted an offer to team up with J and H tackle vs sticking with the shop that has supported me from the beginning. They don't have the latest and greatest which is what I need. And they know that is what need. So I'll be hopefully working with both shops more openly. I've also since june said "yes" to a few companies offering products for review....(i've said no over 200 times...and i see everyone else doing them...and so many doing it so wrong....so i'm saying yes...and telling the companies that you have no guarantee......send me garbage...and everyone will know it's garbage.....and if you watch my channel..you know the risk......

On the one hand it's great for us to have you investing such time and effort into providing anglers with awesome resources; on the other, it's a shame your return on investment hasn't been proportionate--yet! That said I'm sure your channel'll blow up sooner or later. Nice to hear about your new partnership, and that you'll have better access to the latest releases from now on. I really think that's gonna land you a larger audience since there are always people looking for advice on making that purchase decision. It doesn't even have to be the latest and greatest --I'm pretty sure you can do a "curado vs tatula" right now and get tons of views on it. It's prob really obvious but people just love seeing stuff being compared, and I would def like to see more videos like your "steez v antares v mgx" or "tranx vs lexa vs revo vs komodo". I mean I bet tons of people out there wanna see something like a "bantam vs zillion". Also anything Metanium is gonna bring in the views lol. And what about videos on things that people have mixed opinions about on the message boards, like what to do to your reels before fishing in the salt, or how to maintain an AR clutch, or how to lube your wormgear/pawl? Chances are these've crossed your mind at some point considering you're much more knowledgeable than I am--just hoping to give you the perspective of a viewer. In any case, keep rockin'!

    All I can say is that as a deckhand on a long range Sportfishing vessel I’ve seen more diawas and shimanos blown up from tuna then anything else. Those Penn Fathoms are by far the best.

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've always been curious how they hold up from a stationary platform when you're literally toe to toe and for the most point pinned to the rail. I've only targeted tuna from big CC's and sportfish style boats where we could easily keep the fish where we want in relation to the rod tip. And after a few hundred runs between a few of the guys I run with...Never saw a failure.....There was an issue with a plastic framed Penn (like the squall) overheating and spewing oil mid run on a monster big eye....Grease was leakin out the the drain ports of the reel. Only saw that once before lol

    • @biggiezboi
      @biggiezboi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those squalls are definitely not a reel I'd recommend.. I've seen them burnt out by firecracker Yellowtail. I don't know who in their right mind would put one up against any of the tuna family. Their deep water rockfish reels to me. I've seen a good amount of Saltists overheat and damage the bearings or just straight out become warped on big bluefin, almost as badly as the Avets series beginning with the LX and going lighter. So far the TranX 500, Trinidad and Talicas are the only reels from from shimano that impress me at all. I think their overpriced as well. The Saltists have just blown up to many times for me to consider. So far the heaviest I've seen a Fathom tackle is a 40N on a 293lb Bluefin. I watched a Saltist 50 explode on a fish of the same caliber size.

    • @tunanorth
      @tunanorth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tackle Advisors Huge difference on fishing tuna from a stationary [often anchored] Long-Range vessel vs, a small, mobile CC or panga. As noted, graphite frame reels [Squall, Seagate, TLD. etc.] are not a good choice for the Long-Range fishery.

    • @biggiezboi
      @biggiezboi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They can work.. but it all depends on the guts of the reels. For an example, the Tranx 300s and 400s I've seen have been torn up and even grenade from 25lb Yellowfin because their drag is awful, it is literally the clunkiest drag I've ever seen. The only 400 that seems to hold up to 50lb fish is the Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast, the thing has literally the smoothest drag over 20lbs out of any of them, its a bit better then the Tranx 500 imo. I've owned all of them and the only one I've ever thrown away was that Tranx 400, it's the most shyt reel of them with heavy drag. I don't care how smooth it may feel, it's drag is horrible. Plus the casting distance of the Abu and Lexa are better.
      On another note, I've seen alot of Diawas chalk up... Fathoms are a Graphite Frame and I've seen 400lb Blues caught on the 40 and 40N. The Tiagras will chalk up too. Trinidads and Talics should be priced the same as Fathoms IMHO.

    • @tunanorth

I sorta have to limit reels I take in from subscribers....(some threats make that troublesome) Once I finish up the reels on hand...I'll be requesting product from the shops OFTEN. I'll be sure to do a few penn conventional tear downs. Sorta like I did with the BG. The Fathoms would be a good one.

    I think the smaller brake sleeve was to help speed up the reel, the BG was always IMO a little slow compared to something like my Penn Fathom. But I had the issue with the new Saltist being TOO fast once you cleaned them bearings out
    I distance cast when fishing, typically 7oz of lead plus bait. And with 2 blocks and oiled stock bearings it runs just ever so slightly too fast.
    Issue you then have is that you have no means of slowing it down (I used various blocks to try)
    So you either grind the nub off and risk screwing it up in favour of a mag or... what I have done is machine a collar that sits over the spindle where the brake blocks are. This collar has 3 brake block pins machined into it. Basically converting it from 2 blocks to 3. It will now hit big baits in all weather without blowing up but also run fairly fast
    But nothing beats my Penn Fathoms for casting big baits. 2 slosh blocks and fresh bearings and those things run so fast you expect it to blow up, but it never has in 3 years of casting with them
    Anyone else who pendulum/distance casts with the new saltist had this experience?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Over hear the bottom fishing brigade loves their saltigas. Not too many go the Saltiga route for tuna due to the width....At lease that's why I don't use em. I had a friend winch in a 80lb tuna on a silver saltist 30......up side down...(he had an issue with his lefty setup which was a hearty rise rod but too light for the fish and rays that were so dense. So the reels are capable. I have a pro geared out jigmaster that was fun to kick around old school for some tunas. And the gold trini's are amazing...I went tranx 500 instead of trini a. You guys have some interesting offhore yellowfin....My PB yellow was 120lbs....not too many get bigger over hear....over by you.....ooooof.

    • @girabaldytasty6224
      @girabaldytasty6224 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TackleAdvisors yah we have some big yellowfin but most people don't get to catch them since you have to go on a 11 day trip. The biggest yellowfin I've personally seen was about 50 pounds. Ever since the El níno 4 years ago we've had bluefin tuna in cell phone range water. The tranx became very popular for fishing bluefin on poppers with the levelwind and I've seen pictures of the tranx catching over 100lb bluefin. The norm though is yellowtail fishing wich is a blast. I use a 10.6ft glass rod rated 30-60lb with a Trinidad dc to fish lures called surface irons the rod breaks your back but it's a good pain.

      I was ahuge fan of the casting performance of the gold trinis..and was a bit let down when they changed. That is a trophy of a reel...and wish they came out with a new one. I throw surface irons out here. Tady's and such.. You throwin that rod from a boat? out here you get made fun of for brinigin a radio antenna like that on the boat. :) If you ever get sick of that reel....I'll trade ya an avail spooled abu mgx :)

      @@TackleAdvisors hah! I can't believe you throw surface irons out thier that's rad. Yah I bought the Trinidad from my uncle for about 300. He had two of them. Yah I throw that rod on boats on the west coast if you bring a long rod on a boat people respect you and if you come on a boat with a surface iron tied on a 7ft rod they make fun of you. On the west coast it's ok to over head cast reels as long as you look behind you. I don't know if you know this but tady jigs are good but may be only 1/12 swim you need to find one with an off center front hole and hips. And the nose has to be slanted for the best swim. CNC machined surface irons are becoming very popular in socal since they all swim the same, but thier $40 each. Yah Trinidad dc is a sick reel. I really like too the clicking dog on it. I work on a boat during the summer time and most people fish buttoned down drags because of sea Lions and sometimes were fishing in 40 feet water, and with a alot of pressure I've seen the anti reverse go out on one or two Trinidads and toriums.

      Saltist 35h all the way. Its much better supported than the torium and has a lot more torque due to the X ship and bearing supporting the drive shaft.

      Bocas are no different than the bearings I can get off dhgate for 1$....they just have good consistency. I haven't used a product of theirs in years....including their oils, greases, and craptacular spool pin removal tool. I've pretty much abandonded after market bearings unless investing in aftermarket spools or in when they need replacement. The diffeences between properly lubed stock bearings and aftermarket bearings are so minimal it find it's almost not worth it.
      And for FW bass fishing applications.. If you adjust the spool tension adjustment knob. You quite literally remove any advantage a fancy bearing brings to the table. So it's not that boca is garbage....it's that so many bearings are sooooo close to one another...Oil makes a bigger difference in bearings than brand or Abec rating. I have some one off exotic one off bearings that I am not allowed to film...but I'm "breaking in" a set now....and even still they aren't world altering.

    • @bassnazi4713
      @bassnazi4713 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I still have some older reels that were standard for the time with half the bearings included now. Maintenance helps way more than anything else. The bearings in reels face more, in terms of potential damage, from the elements than they will ever see in load like most bearings see in other applications.

    • @GOONED-CELLULITOSAUR
      @GOONED-CELLULITOSAUR 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason why i consider Boca's garbage is not because they perform poorly. Their performance is fine... BUT SO IS THE PERFORMACE OF THE $10 pair of ceramic hybrids from aliexpress. The reason why they're garbo is because they're charging way more than they should be. Their made in china crap cost them nothing, but they sell you a pair for what? $35? That's dumb. They're also much noisier than anything from ZPI, Hedgehog or KTF.
      Personally, i feel like upgrading the bearings is not needed UNLESS you're using a sub $150 reel that most likely came with trash bearings. For BFS setups, i also consider dry ceramic hybrids or the micro bearings from Hedgehog (their Air BFS) is absolutely worth it for a quick startup of the spool when casting the ultra light stuff.
