You are so right about the areas on the Stella having play in them for the price point shouldn't be any play to be honest I have owned Shimano products and I was caught up in the Shimano hype until I touched a Daiwa... much more Superior product. The reels are built more solid have a sturdier feel have a more quality feel
I am not sure if it has already been mentioned by somebody yet but the small amount of play disappears under load is most likely there for a calculated reason. Because all materials have a certain amount of flex/squish, and with the huge forces applied upon a spinning reel when fighting mega strong/heavy fish, that "play" allows gears to mesh better and things not to grind on themselves. Imagine it was made using ultra tight clearances between parts, then all that force is applied...the parts (especially meshing of gear teeth) would be actually pushing on each other and it would feel rougher, tighter & less smooth -than if the clearances were there to start with before loads are applied. Among other similar systems I installed motorcycle sprockets (chain drive gears) & chains for years as a motorcycle component technician and I would never install things that roll/move under heavy load super tightly, or with no room for "give". I have also installed and maintained many of Shimano's push bike gear systems- and there is engineered tolerances, movement & flex in these gear systems- that work under load also. Hope that might give you some answers? but yes cheap products do have unintentional "slop" between rolling/moving parts-Which seemingly similar in feeling when turned not under load, will not translate into less wear and smoother function when loaded up with the strain from some reef pig/pelagic donkey-like the movement/flex from the Stella SW would.
Nope, that not how things work under stress! High tolerances always been critical in precise components! I think engineers don't need that kind of tolerances in a reel, but for that money.. yeah!
Super thorough review. I especially liked where you went over the play in areas where you wouldn't expect it. That makes me wonder if the reel is as watertight as they claim it is. Also, the plastic parts. Interesting facts about the 30000 being the same components as the 20000 with only the outside components changing, I could see how that could wind up with gear damage, especially if your targeting monsters. Hope your Japan trip is going well. Take care. Until next time, tight lines & good vibes.

Juno, Enjoyed your assessment. I have a question I can't find an answer to; I have a Stella 2500S. Is it possible to put a different spool on it that would allow me to put more line on?
Shimano changed that angle on their new reels, including the 2013 Stella SW, in a somehow controversial move. The foot of the Stella is now parallel to the main shaft, something that has caused problems to a number of users, particularly of bigger sizes 18K and up. The new parallel foot of the Stella SW meant that on standard jigging and popping rods the line would come out of the reel at such a sharp angle it would not remain seated on the line roller, which causes line damage and a weird feel when reeling. Following many complaints and a few videos that were posted by European anglers showing the issue. Source Alan Hawk in the saltiga expedition review.
It sounds like they are going cheaper on their parts for more profits! Knowing that people will still buy the reel because its made a good name in the fishing community!
not sure if the parts you pointed out are plastic or not as a carp fisherman my Shimano aero technium reels have the Ci4 material which feels like plastic but is actually a alloy so it may be that

Also the drag on the Stella’s is 55lbs. The 30000 has 44.1lbs of drag, although this is less. Who is going to use 44 lbs of drag. It is too much drag in the first place and I have never had to push either my 14000 or my 30000 especially as the 30000 stacks so much line

Liked and subbed. Super informative and led to some sick fishing action from your vid library. As a super keen rock fisho and TH-camr in NZ. I use the Fin-nor offshore reel. Heavy reel, super solid, simple, and reliable. And cheap when compared to others. Highly recommend if you can handle the extra weight. Would be interested in your technical thoughts on the dogfight range though.

I own a Stella 2500 FD which I love but I would never buy it again by no means. My friend likes big game specially red tuna fishing. Would you think Slammer III could be suitable for up to 1000 pounds tuna? I own 3500 size and it's a machine but don't know how could it work on bigger size for these beasts
Please help, I have the following Shimano Stella reels: Shimano Stella 4000FB Shimano Stella FW 4000S I am looking to buy a slightly larger spare spool for each of the reel. Can you tell me if the 5000 spools size (in the same series) will fit the 4000 size reels.
I use to be a Shimano fan but have switched to lessor price reels the problem I had was bearings would freeze up , I would send them back to Shimano factory they would charge only $ 25 never repaired but I would get a new reel every time great service but it takes about 3 weeks to get back. I would rinse after use and clean the best I could once I tried to take down to clean but my hands couldn't handle the little screws so I sent it to Shimano in a baggie they sent me a new reel WOW ! I now use Diawa and Tsunami and have had no issues.
I own the 4000 8000 14000 Stella and I have zero buyers remorse, rinse them off the fresh water after every session and they're good to go every time 🤙🏾🤙🏾 The plastic you refer to are only shrouds on the Hagane body which is a cast aluminum composite according to shimano and in ten years time I reckon we'd be able to 3d print new components if anything wears out. Fast and furious 6 and dodge ball !
Do these suffer from line twist like the rest of the Shimano range ? I gave up on the Stradic for this very reason - changed to Daiwa Airity Tournament and have absolutely no regrets.
I have never had a problem with my stradic with line twist. I have used 30 dollar spinners and have never had a problem. You might be using to heavy of line or over spooling
I can use rifles to probably explain the "play" in the reel. People don't like how "sloppy" the bolt of how any Mauser type rifle feels. Its wobbly and has a ton of play. Everybody prefers how smooth a bolt on a Tikka feels for example, with very little play. But that play is there for a reason, and when sand, mud and other grit get on that bolt, the Mauser will always operate as it was intended. The Tikka will not. I suspect the Stella is the same. If Shimano built it without, a single grain of sand could cause it to bind up.
Not being able to get parts after 10 years is crap. I've got a cherry Penn Jigmaster from 1962 I got on ebay for $50. I can still get every part for it (although it works flawlessly).
JunoRyan I work at shop in the US that sells both. A dogfight 8000h is $1099.00, and both the Stella18000SWBHG and 20k are $1259.00. A Saltiga 6500h is $999.95 / Stella 14000 is $1159.99 Hope that helps
I'm perfectly happy with my Nasci and at the price I wouldn't be too mad having to buy another if I ever had to. Totally different class of reel but I don't even get as much mileage out of the gear I do have.
The play mentioned exists, but has been over exaggerated for the purpose of clickbaiting. You need to have a degree of backlash in the gearing for the reel to function properly. I have both a Stella and Saltiga and the latter does have slightly tighter back lash overall. I also have a spheros and saragosa and whilst they are great reels the drag systems are not in the same league as the top tier reels, and they have issues with the drag clicker, and the saragosa has a weird balancing issue in the 10k plus sizes. I also have a fin nor lethal lt100 which is a $100 reel and its fantastic for smoothness and has great drag. Each reel has a purpose, simply stating that someone should get x over y because y is lighter, is better sealed, or better drag isn't a good recommendation as you have to look at what that reel is going to be used for.
Thanks for the info. I have used Shimano for many years with good results but I will never drop a grand on a reel. We are a bit short of salt water up here in NW Arkansas. Thanks for the vid but now get your tail end back on the water and catch some fish...lol Always look forward to your next. Be safe and take care!
I bought a 20000 Stella 12 plus years ago and it is a precision piece of engineering, not a thou of play in any part, as smooth as can be. About 2 or 3 years ago I decided to fork out for a 5000 model. I was disappointed, play in every part. The round handle even spun off center, not even close to the precise engineering of my older model. Of course I kicked up a stink and had the handle replaced and let the sales person know what I thought. I do wonder if like many things in this world maybe Shimano are simply having these latest reels manufactured cheaper and relying on their name to keep their price. Kiwis can fly!
Got the opportunity of comparing the slammer high speed to the stella and this newer model doesn't compare to the slammer 3. Only thing was slammer was heavier/ bulkier
@@slimetime4668 Maybe! I based the purchase on a review that I totally trusted. Turned out great. Also, based on the price, it was a smaller gamble than buying ONE really expensive reel. Don't get me wrong, If I had the cheddar I'de buy expensive reels but I'm more into fishing than reels so it worked out for me.
Sunset Fishing Sessions negative, they don’t sell the expedition in the US, only the dogfight and the Standard 2015 Saltiga. They’re cheaper depending where you look, more expensive in other places
Hey, great video, very well thought out and presented. But, please stop saying "go ahead" and "went ahead". Those are usually fill in words that don't mean anything. "I'm going to go ahead and go to the store" vs "I am going to the store" See what I mean? I know it is a style of speaking that has taken over younger generations but it is very irritating to us old folks. Keep up the good work.
jbirdsall99 Good points! I’m always working on my public speaking, if you saw the amount of “takes” it required me to piece together a 15 min video, you’d laugh 😂
This thing about really expensive spinning reels is a puzzle to me. No matter how much you spend, it's still a spinning reel. The drag is never going to be as good as a conventional reel. And the line has to take a right angle coming off the spool. If you crank on a fighting fish and don't make any line, you're just twisting. Also, look at the parts diagram for the Stella. There's a million parts. Servicing and fixing that thing down the road is going to be a nightmare. I just bought a Garcia Mitchell 302 Saltwater from about 1959. It's like new, never used. Made in France. They were actually made in Haute Savoie, near Switzerland. It's made like a watch. I paid $41. It's going to work great. Really smooth. The bail snaps shut with a satisfying "clink". I'm not planning to go swimming with it. It's actually pretty beefy. It's all metal. And the metal that's there is stainless where it counts. There's no plastic in it. If you rinse it off after getting salt on it, it will last another lifetime.
Garth, I completely agree. I hate the damn things but I do use them if fishing with less than 8lb mono. But several of these u tube "stars" use them with success! I've asked a few of these "stars" why they use them and not a one has come up with a solid answer in my opinion. Maybe it's a generational thing. IDK.
@Robert Curtin I'm 53 and have been fishing with the San Diego long range fleet since my early 20's. If you walked on one of the long range boats with a quiver of rods sporting these "heavy duty" reels of course you could use them. But most if not all crews will tell you that "it's your possible trip of a lifetime, your chance at a world record". Like Juno said " it's your money , your decision". I try to make the choices that allow me the best chances for success. The Pacific has been navigated by outrigger canoe but if I were going to attempt this same feat I'd much rather stack the odds in my favor by employing fiberglass, steel and deisel engines. When I step into the alley to take on Goliath, I don't want a pinche(slang) sling shot. I want a brand new M2 50 Cal. Just my opinion.
@Robert Curtin Yes, if you want to cast a 1/4oz lure with 4# test, then by all means use a spinning reel. My point is only that for salt water conventional reels are generally better, and there's no reason to spend big bucks on a spinning reel. They don't do the job any better than a less expensive one.
People today are targeting a lot bigger fish on spinning gear than they use to when watch makers turned to anglers. I too invested a small amount on an old Mitchell 302 saltwater. Near new (at least 50 years old) Worked a treat until I hooked a trophy snapper and had the spool implode. Now use an offshore fin-nor reel. Super tough, smooth as, well priced, a bit heavy (lots of metal), but seems to handle anything.
excellent comment my dear juno, I always dreamed of buying a reel estella sw, but thank you great comment on this, and stop dreaming and I will look for other options, such as you indicate or maybe, opt for van staal you can help me with your opinion about this brand of reels. thank you brother and greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷.
When I use and/or exam their $200-$500 baitcasters, I can see the money. It makes sense. I just don’t see $1000 in the Stella. Never have. To each their own.
Just depends on where you live really. Both will get the job done flawlessly. In my opinion if you're in Japan or Australia the Saltiga is the way to go, USA or a smaller random countries off the grid, I'd recommend Stella. This is solely for the ease of getting the reel serviced, too many reports of daiwa taking months at a time for USA customers... etc.
I know a guy in Daytona who has the JDM Saltiga Expedition 5500H and he swears it’s the best saltwater spinner he’s ever fished with. He literally swims with it and has had it for 5 years... never has serviced it and still performs flawlessly. Catches sharks and 150 lb Tarpon all the time on that reel. He claims the drag is much smoother than the 2013 Stella.
The most disappointing part of the stella is the drag. My fin-nor offshore 9500 has 550m of 80lb braid an added carbon fiber drag giving it more more then 32kg(70lb) of drag. While the stella hold half of the braid and has 7kg (14lb) less drag for an extra $1000

Definitely was looking at the selfie screen on the camera and not the lens. Something I need to work on!
What type of rod you use with this reel for jigging?
Love the review. Never used one but would agree with every point u made.
You deserve so many more subs man, best fishing channel on TH-cam in my opinion.
So whats your fav reel right now den?
I ask this question again would you rather have your van staal or the stella
Shortsolja90 just depends on what I’m doing, lots of beach and land based stuff: VS
Spending time on the boat chasing pelagics on spinning gear: Stella
Hi Ryan....thx for the advice. Happy belated New Year and may u catch many more this year. Can't wait to see. 🍻🎣
Are you missing a zero on your numbers, because I saw you talking about tuna! Those sizes sound like they are for freshwater..I think!
So what did Alan actually think of the 2019 Stella ? his review wasn't specific about if it was ultimately an improvement over the 2013?
david k Read the review on a desk top computer. For some reason you can’t read all of it on a smartphone.
Please help,
I have the following Shimano Stella reels:
Shimano Stella 4000FB
Shimano Stella FW 4000S
I am looking to buy a slightly larger spare spool for each of the reel.
Can you tell me if the 5000 spools size (in the same series) will fit the 4000 size reels.
I got a daiwa saltiga. I feel like overall its a better design then a stella.
Entering their 38th year my BG15 and BG60 are still going strong lots of salt. I hope I can out live them and get something a bit tighter someday.
One day, i will have that one beautiful shimano stella.
I own the 4000 8000 14000 Stella and I have zero buyers remorse, rinse them off the fresh water after every session and they're good to go every time 🤙🏾🤙🏾
The plastic you refer to are only shrouds on the Hagane body which is a cast aluminum composite according to shimano and in ten years time I reckon we'd be able to 3d print new components if anything wears out.
Fast and furious 6 and dodge ball !
I love fishing but I don't love it that much to spend a k on 1 reel. Really enjoy watching your videos.
Fantastic review, thanks. Please review the new 2019 version!!
Yep.
Got my SW for $940 and that was on Sale !!!
Apart from that. No complaints 👍
What can I do if my reel has some play in it like you point out
Excellent video also the Van Stall video the same, both very informative and helpful
Dude ...it was a perfect review...cant be as straight forward as this one ...thanks a lot
@@Raxtz 2lb, 4lb, and 6lb. Mostly throw 4 gram poppers or the smallest CC Big O's. Note this was in the 1990's on the smallest Stradic in the range.
Jason's Fishing Again? Great explanation and one I’m going to borrow 👍
I have heard the same about Kalashnikov rifles.
New here, thanks for the info on that reel. I use mostly Shimano reels and love them all, some from the early 90s and they all still work great.
Not being able to get parts after 10 years is crap. I've got a cherry Penn Jigmaster from 1962 I got on ebay for $50. I can still get every part for it (although it works flawlessly).
Slammer 3 is the go to Imo good gears good drag very good durability all metal but probably weighs alot more.
Just a recommendation, look at the camera.
ShipMonster look at his right eye, he is looking at you
hi man, could u maybe do s review on the okuma makaira spinning reel plz
Alan Hawk gave that a great review
The daiwa dogfight and the saltiga are more expencive than the stella
DAIWA CATALINA 😉
Shiiit you’re right they are in US markets. Fun fact, out here in Japan the Daiwas are actually cheaper than the Stellas.
a 30k stella costs as much if not more than a dogfight. here in australia anyway.
JunoRyan I work at shop in the US that sells both. A dogfight 8000h is $1099.00, and both the Stella18000SWBHG and 20k are $1259.00. A Saltiga 6500h is $999.95 / Stella 14000 is $1159.99
Hope that helps
JunoRyan Not more than the Exist. The Exist is more expensive in Japan and the U.S.
I'm perfectly happy with my Nasci and at the price I wouldn't be too mad having to buy another if I ever had to. Totally different class of reel but I don't even get as much mileage out of the gear I do have.
I feel for you
Why Stella 2019 just have 3 sizes for SW?8000,10000&14000..any idea?
No love for the accurate twin spins?
I always look forward to your comments Rick! Thanks for the continued support my friend.
Kiwis can fly!
if there was gt in my country I would go without hesitation for a saltiga expedition 8000
Why not buy the new saltiga? The expedition and dogfight are discontinued now.
Digging the channel new sub. Advice tho, your looking at the wrong part of the camera just helping
What about the Twin Power?
I found you video very honest thanks for your review!!!!
This Stella or stella sw 2020?
Got the opportunity of comparing the slammer high speed to the stella and this newer model doesn't compare to the slammer 3. Only thing was slammer was heavier/ bulkier
That’s a pretty disappointing review lol. If i ever fished for extreme big game I would probably just get a saragosa, the new spinfisher, or a saltist
Yeah I think you're right. I can't picture Shimano putting cheap plastic parts on $1,000 reel Ci-4 it's actually pretty durable.
I have all 3. Ive owned alot of high end reels and I love penn. I love Diawa. I hate shimano. Dont forget the slammer 3 btw - beast spinner.
Got enough line on that reel?
Hey man, great input! Can you do one on the Dog fight 8000 and maybe one where you compare both?
Great review/opinion, i Was contemplating the Stella 6000
Juno I like to see a video on the Penn spenfisher reel now I would like to see that
Mexico needs to start making knock off fishing reels. $600 Stella SW
China*
Love this video. Do the same kind of video on the 2019 Stella when it comes out.
Fin-Nor is Made in China, like everything else these days, but for $140 it's probably a decent reel.
Now THAT, I can afford! In fact I went ahead and bought the whole line up. Very nice reels
edstimator1 yikes that's dangerous, I'd never buy an entire new line of reels from even a brand I like and know
@@slimetime4668 Maybe! I based the purchase on a review that I totally trusted. Turned out great. Also, based on the price, it was a smaller gamble than buying ONE really expensive reel. Don't get me wrong, If I had the cheddar I'de buy expensive reels but I'm more into fishing than reels so it worked out for me.
fin-nor indeed is good reel😊
I have the fin-nor lt60.
Very nice reel
omg is the daiwa expedition cheaper in the US?
What about the sustain ??? Nmnobodys mentioned this reel
Spinning reels are better
Super tough, smooth as, well priced, a bit heavy (lots of metal), but seems to handle anything.
what size u use that one?
Nice I need a guy like you to watch I like to buy good stuff I’ve bought some reels that are not so good but I’ll be checking your vids out 👍🏼
I have a Stella 8000H, didn't know it's not spool swappable with the 10k and 14k.
excellent comment my dear juno, I always dreamed of buying a reel estella sw, but thank you great comment on this, and stop dreaming and I will look for other options, such as you indicate or maybe, opt for van staal you can help me with your opinion about this brand of reels. thank you brother and greetings from Costa Rica 🇨🇷.
When I use and/or exam their $200-$500 baitcasters, I can see the money. It makes sense. I just don’t see $1000 in the Stella. Never have. To each their own.
Saltiga dogfight/ Expedition or the 2019 Stella??????
Stuarticus86
With stella u'd have better casting due to spool design n no magseal thing otherwise all r the same in their performance.
JunoRyan Man id grab an Expedition while you’re over there for shits n giggles just to add to your collection. It’s probably much cheaper there.
Why not get the new 2020 saltiga? I bought the 14000xh and I'm in love. It slays tuna.
Take a Penn Slammer 3 anyday. I don’t mind dropping it and slamming it against rocks. $180 on Amazon, saving lots of money for gas and other gear.
