When the Avalon came on the market, I felt it was impressive from the outset. Simple styling, advanced luxury features typically found on a Lexus only for a much lower price. I have always been impressed by the Avalon. Only the 2005-12 series doesn't capture my attention, but I would still buy it.
When Toyota failed to introduce the current generation as a cross, then they neglected to promote this car the way they should have, and giving it the same platform as the Lexus ES, starting in 2013, I knew this jewel of a car's days were numbered. I just wish I was able to scoop one up new, before being cancelled. Oh, and I hope Camry can fill its shoes, because there's a huge difference in quality between the two.
Thanks again Joe, for another knockout review.

I think the problem was marketing. Ultimately most of the folks I’ve seen go for the Avalon were the ones who might’ve also gone for a Buick Century. Lots of older customers, those were the main customers for full size sedans.

I get about 475 on a full tank, which at the moment is about 55 to 60 bucks depending on the horrible economy lol. This is THE best car, I have ever owned in my entire life. Got lucky with the color as well, full pearl with black 19" rims and black tail. The only thing I wish this XSE version had, would be the cooled seats, not just heated seats. Either way! I can't ever see myself driving another car that feels this smooth to drive and saves so much on gas! I hope it lasts me for an eternity (prob will since it's a toyota

The Avalon looks so much better in person. It is an elegant car, and has lots of room. I don't think they marketed it that well. and it does blur the boundary with Lexus. I guess they are bringing in the Crown for the people who want a larger vehicle.

Stephen I totally agree with you. I have owned three Avalons 2008, 2013 and now have the 2020 Avalon Limited. One great thing I will add is super reliable. All the V6 models has never broken down. I have only replace brakes, tires, and windshield wipers. The best sedan for the money for sure. My wife drives the Avalon and I purchased at 2021 Nissan Platinum. They are tale of two sedans. If I could combine them, I would keep the styling on Maxima(but needs the space of the Avalon), keep the Avalon transmission and keep the engine of the Maxima. Keep the panoramic roof from maxima and seats(they are super comfortable-Zero-gravity). This would be a keeper. So when Toyota discontinue the Avalon this year, Nissan should pay attention if they are planning to keep the Maxima.

    • @kannermw
      @kannermw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

TRD Avalon was one of the dumber products Toyota ever produced. They tried to turn a larger sedan built for comfort and make it look like a performance ricer to appeal to younger buyers who don't know any better and possibly couldnt afford higher level trims. Main benefits vs TRD Camry is quieter ride and ability to get some but not all premium features. Camry has no folding rear seat, and base audio system only, stiff ride, and no other premium creature comforts like ventilated seats.
I purchased fully loaded 2021 Avalon Touring and after 1.5 years extremely pleased with this car. Equipped with adaptive damping suspension you can select your sport mode or comfort mode, active noise cancellation and a host of other creature comforts including the premium JBL audio. All at a price point $8K below nearest equipped ES350 it is a bargain. IMO if you can't afford higher level trim Avalons in either Touring or Limited then you should step down to Camry or some other car more within your budget.

I see people staring at it and when they see the inside they really feel what I feel and they say they want one. Great space and rides really smooth and well. Happy Camry hybrid driver here: Price difference between hybrid and non hybrid is not that much. With current political affairs in the world it's nice to have a car that is frugal with fuel. You do need a different mindset in driving a hybrid. It's no V6 and though power in the hybrid is more than adequate, it's no sports engine. But your wallet will thank you. When fuel hit $5 a gallon it really was a dent in my budget 😅

Respectfully disagree on the comparison that an Accord doesn't compare to this, as far as a full size sedan, most notably the Accord Touring, 2.0 , top trim. This one, the Touring, easily matches up with the ones you mentioned, the Genesis, Maxima etc... Test drive both , the Accord Touring, and the Maxima, or Genesis.. very comparable...
Spent a few months test driving several, looking for what I wanted. This was last Oct. And with Honda,, as the Toyota... can go for a long time.
They knocked out of the park with the Accord Touring. Driving it 6 months now, and still amazing vehicle.

I bought my 2019 Avalon hybrid for $34K new 3 years ago. If you know how to drive a hybrid you can get 55 mpg on your Avalon. I do not like a two tone interior, so I selected all black inter that is really dark gray. I test drove a 2020 Lexus ES350 hybrid and the dash looked outdated. Lexus did not offer a one color interior, and the back seat does not fold down like the Avalon does. They both have the same soft ride and low interior noise level. To me the Lexus should have been to one Toyota got ride of.
NOTE: Most of the new Crowns that replaces the Avalon will be front wheel drive and have a hatchback. Priced the same as a Lexus ES350. Both will be made on the same assembly line in Kentucky, as did Avalon and Lexus ES 350.

Toyota messed with the Avalon too much. We finally picked up a 2013 Avalon Limited several years ago and my wife wanted to give it back the very next day. Toyota had put low profile tires on it. We are up in age and we thought we were getting a soft ride. I had to spend more money swapping out the suspension, wheels and tires. It rides a lot better now and a very good car. Unfortunately, my wife will not buy another Avalon, because of this experience. Her 2007 XLE Camry was a softer ride.

The interior is gorgeous, however, the front fascia just looks terrible to me. I hope the new crown this year keeps this interior with better exterior styling

A used '19 XSE v6 filled the role for me as a daily about 8 months ago; came with 78,000 miles on it. 17,000 miles later (I rolled past 95k last week), and I have no real gripes about it. The rumors I've heard is that they are killing the Avalon to replace it with the RWD Crown, not to eliminate their large sedan role entirely, so keep that in mind.

Most of the new Crowns will be front wheel drive and have a hatchback. Priced the same as a Lexus ES350. Both will be made on the same assembly line in Kentucky.

  • @ethanb.2241

I'd rather buy a Lexus ES, because since the price of the Avalon is already super close to the price of the Lexus ES, it makes sense in my opinion to take a step up and buy an ES.

The Toyota Avalon is getting replace with the new Crown since we never got the Crown until now. The Crown was only sold in Japan. I'm looking forward to see the Crown take sales from the Avalon see if Toyota made the right choice to kill off the Avalon.

Actually, the Maxima is a midsize vehicle but yea the Avalon was compared to the luxury LS, XTS, 7-series etc... in interior room. Biggest error they could've ever made was making the Camry too similar in style and size to the flagship Avalon. I had an 08' Avalon Limited in a beautiful sky blue I loved that car, lol my wife's grandmother loved riding with us with the reclining second row was just an amazing car family grew so I traded it in sadly..... (Oh and the trade-in value is appreciated 👌🏾)! But you put a 08' Avalon next to a 08' Camry and you're not mistaking the vs today.

I have a 2020 Genesis G80 Sport AWD and am seriously thinking about trading that for the Toyota Avalon Limited hybrid or Lexus ES 300h. Even with the few minor detractors (for me), there’s the 43mpg consideration. I also have a 2021 Toyota Venza hybrid and average 42+mpg. Thanks for the review and insights.

Get the Toyota Avalon hybrid limited, ES 300h doesn't have heated back seats and can't be folded down no matter what trim level you buy .also they are built in the same plant.

Yes, you can buy parts for 20 year old Toyotas in the aftermarket world. I drove 2001 Camry all the way till 2017 and had no issues finding parts. Remember the Avalon has been around for a long time so this car is a main stayer on the used car market.
