Thanks David. I think especially it's helpful for the effect of limiter. Sometimes it's harder to hear with smaller changes but it's nice to know it is actually doing something!
Fantastic video!!! I have the Storm, and love it with my already overdriven amp. Just thickens it up and makes it jump out ever so slightly without taking over. I pretty much leave it on all the time. The waveforms were of tremendous help as it helped me understand the limiter function!!! That knob has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Of course being an AC/DC fan and seeing it on Laura Cox's and her bands rig rundown pushed me to pick up this pedal. Really been happy with it so far. Thanks for sharing this video, it really helped me understand this pedal in more depth!
Thanks Brian I am glad you found the video helpful. It's a good thing to know RE the limiter - when I did the first change of the pot it was hard to hear the difference but you can see it on the waveform. So it's nice to know it does tighten things up slightly at that position. I often find when mixing, I compress things to tighten it up, not necessarily because it sonically changes it much, but later down the road it becomes important for a balanced mix. Anyway - a great pedal!
Nice work, man, and well played. I’ve had this pedal for a while and initially wasn’t impressed with it because my instincts were to keep the Gain low and use the Boost to get volume where I wanted it. However that approach presents a lot of hiss. Revisited it today and figured out that I should ignore the knob labels and just find a setting that sounds good. Now I’m loving it with Gain on about 9/10, Boost about 3/10 and Limiter about 4/10.
Thanks Brent! Absolutely RE playing around with settings until it gives you what you want. I think with low gain you're missing out on that 'secret sauce' part of the pedal as the boost is just volume. Although it is clean boost... but if you are using a high gain amp and other pedals etc it will boost any hiss that is inherintly there.
Could you please make a video trying to replicate what it does with affordable pedals? Seems to be a mix of boost, compression and maybe some EQ pedals combined together
Great review Gary! I have a TC Hypergravity that's been on my pedal board for ages but I have only just wrapped my head (and ears) around this Christmas (while learning sultans of swing LOL!). I can get a similar effect as the limiter on this pedal but it takes quite a while to dial in depending on the other variables (amp/guitar) its a bit of a knife edge to get it there, especially for heavier guitar. I now have one of these on they way, seems too be much more tuned to the job! Thanks for the video and taking the time to put the waveforms in and in giving us your insights!
Thanks Danny for your comment much appreciated. Sorry for slow reply I didn't see it until today for some reason! That knopfler clean strat sound def requires a compressor but as you say - it would be a subtle setting. Has the Storm performed better than the TC? The Storm does something different to all compressor/limiter pedals IMO.
I really wish you would have hit a couple ACDC riffs, my only reason to buy one is to get closer to their tones. lol. I dont know whether to get the solodallas or the other one, I cant remember its name atm. Does it come with instructions on where to set the knobs for angus and malcom? Sounds closer than Ive ever been straight away, lol. BTW, this is the most thorough video on any product I have ever seen, ever. You do a excellent job my friend.
Thanks for not playing AC/DC for this demo! Interested in this pedal for what it can do for a variety of tones, and this helps infinitely more than another AC/DC-type demo
Besides the "Angus compression" it makes the clean sounds more like a classic recording the reverb, the tone sounds like a pro Tom Jones or a James Bond recording.
Don’t care for the ‘full gain clipping’ but really nice video, wave forms are neat. Seems like a clean boost with some compression? Would this be the same pedal as the Storm?
So if I want to get the "Back in Black" tone on my Marshall DSL5 do I plug the pedal into the clean channel or dirty channel and where do I keep the gain on the amp? Nobody has shown this yet even the Solo Dallas Channel.
Thanks very much I'm glad you like it. In a word, no! (I've tried it!) I guess it's all about the specific components, the voicing of the gain stage & the specific nature of the limiter. And obv a limiter is very different to a compressor. Personally I'v not got anywhere near close with compressor / EQ / Boosters :D
@@Garyclintoncomposer I mainly use VVA amps, which are built by a good friend of mine in California. I've also used the Storm through Fenders and Orange. I run my amps pretty clean and let pedals do the dirt mostly, so i don't think that's it. I'll take a a closer look tonight. Thanks for the reply.
@@chrissavage1534 Ahh ok always good to find these things out. Most people do run it into overdriven amps, certainly that's how the original Schaffer system was used by Angus Young. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
They are two different units solodallas.com/storm-or-schaffer-replica-classic But... Solodallas have changed the labels on the Storm I think so if you've seen the Storm (3 controls) labelled with Schaffer Replica, they are the same pedal.
What an awesome idea to use the waveforms in your demo! Really helped paint a picture of what the unit is doing along with a clear explanation 👍

Best review Iv'e seen on this pedal. Kudos!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it.
I agree... best review of this pedal yet! Well done!

Nice! I have the Classic and really enjoy it. Looking at getting the storm though. Thanks for the video!
I'm really impressed with it. Its very versatile. Does more than just AC/DC IMO. Go get one! :D
That was a great explanation, thanks!
You're welcome I'm glad you found it useful :D

It's like a compressor pedal with added awesomeness

The rvb FYI was the spring rvb in the Soldano Lucky 13...
Thank you! Great analisys))

Coming in late but it's kinda like the BBE Sonic Stomp...Can;t really put your finger on it...But it does make difference....
It definitely make a difference. I think my favourite use is glueing together other pedal stacks.
So if I want to get the "Back in Black" tone on my Marshall DSL5 do I plug the pedal into the clean channel or dirty channel and where do I keep the gain on the amp? Nobody has shown this yet even the Solo Dallas Channel.
Try both, experiment w it
Great analysis! You think the same aound can be achieved with regular eq + compressor?

*"What's the frequency Kenneth."-Dan Rather CBS NEWS* 🤣
How is it so clean with the Gain maxed out? I have the same pedal, and it adds a lot more dirt with the Gain set there.
You must be running into an amp that is already overdriven or perhaps a clean channel that isn't very clean... What amp are you using?

How do you play the riff at 13:01 😭😂
Step 1: buy some denim dungarees 😅
Love Oasis but to me this is just a clean boost at those settings
So, like an OD pedal of which there are thousands?
Nope.
And why are you noodling around on folksy type guitar playing? Where are the open chord riffs and power chords. That's who is buying this pedal.
Nobody is!
It’s a compressor
Glorified chorus nothing more
are u 4 real... a chorus XD
