6 years on, I just watched a bunch of reviews of this pedal back to back. And I know one thing for sure: This is the best "I wrote an instrumental in the style of AC/DC without needing a lawyer" out there. Really great composition Pete!
I’ve had this pedal for a year and I figured I’d chime in after reading many comments here. I used the pedal version in the studio and even with my Marshall JMP 50 cranked with the pedal on, the hiss didn’t penetrate the recording. I was surprised myself. Anyway, it sounded great. For those who are looking for something to quiet the hiss of this pedal, get a rocktron HUSH pedal. Angus himself uses the hush in his current rig, but it’s BARELY on, just enough to quiet the Replica. Also, I have tried the pedal with different amps like a vox ac15 and the effect isn’t the same. I really think this pedal is best suited for the old Marshall heads. This pedal is for people who love the tone of their Marshall and want to enhance that tone for leads. I’ve tried a lot of overdrive pedals but I always feel like they color the amp’s tone in a negative way.
nearly every guitar player everywhere in some way was and is still effected by this iconic sound I think it answers to the commonality of rock/and crossover music top 40, radio music. the sound is a beast long liv rock
More addictive than sugar! Once you turn one of these on It will stay on.....just got a Klon replica and I am having that exact experience..great review as usual
Love Pete and Fil for their passion for all things music and guitar... Incredible talent and dedication to tone. The SDSV replica is very cool and sounds awesome... But...IMHO, with a trained ear, you can achieve this sound with most great Tube amps and a good boost/OD pedal. The new Ibanez combo TS-808DX does the same thing. So does the TC Electronics Spark Booster. Angus's studio and live tone changes a lot from 1977-1985 quite a bit. There is a multitude of other factors to consider. The amp, tube type (EL-34s vs 6L6s), room, mic type and placement, strings, guitar, console coloration, pre and post fader mix EQ, tape saturation, and lastly, mastering. So, yeah... the replica rocks... but it's only one piece of the puzzle.
So true. Just one piece of the puzzle - hands are another big part of it, always, aren't they? What I really wanted to do with this was to provide the one and original thing that was used. You know, with these you will get it instantly as opposed to having to mess around in order to get the right vibe. The Schaffer really is capable of bringing it instantly; hence Michael Molenda (Guitar Player Magazine, Editor) called it 'Instant Angus' and we kept that one (of course, right?). So: anything is possible with a lot of knowledge and THE RIGHT gear; but it's not as trivial as one would think. I often ask people claiming that they get a great AC/DC sound with this and that to let me hear it and then 99% of the times, it's not so good, they realize it and then off we go lol - AC/DC were masters of their game, still unmatched today. Never enough information to share! Thanks much, Fil
Yep, agreed. I've got a CMatMods Sigma and a RiffShooter: both are very efficient and versatile. I guess the advantage with the Shaeffer replica is that you get the "Angus tone" right away, with very little tweaking... that is if you're ready to pay the heavy price for it ;-)
Wild how pedals like this and the EP Booster mimic what the ancient studio gear did to "alter" the tone way back when! Stock Marshall Plexi, sure. But a wireless unit acting like a boost is the missing ingredient! Ditto for the Echoplex, adding a bit of gain and crunch along with the delay! The missing links! Magic in a box!
Definitely not the first boost out there. People were using the old Echoplex preamp way long before the release of any type of wireless units. But no doubt that the Shaffer was a key in sound on albums like highway to hell and back in black. Also Angus went to the hotter PAF pickup. Any how I bought a Shaffer replica and I absolutely love what it does to a stubborn Marshall. Great video Pete, always a pleasure.
I have the solidly Schaffer replica pedal. When I turn the boost on it amplifies a loud buzz/humm. What would cause that. I don’t hear any complaints about that in all the reviews I’ve watched.
My Genz Benz Black Pearl has a boost circuit and what this does sounds almost exactly like what that boost circuit does. More or less just turning up the pre-amp volume or the master volume. Very nice indeed although I noticed at the end the sounds you were getting seemed a little thin. Had you cut some of the bass on the amp? I didn't notice during the intro so I am thinking it's a "cutting through the mix" thing.
the price your paying on the pedal it's not for the device itself. There was a lot of research and reverse engineering, so i think it worth every penny for getting a classic piece of tone.
this may be a dumb question, but what about this pedal with a drive or any other type pedal? how well does it work with others if you will? would you even want to add more?
...count on the palm of one hand, those devices that created a sound recorded on multi million selling albums... That's probably true. You can find them all on Tim Pierce's pedal board and recording studio. Great vid Pete. FYI, the rolling questions did not play very well on my 5K display. Not certain if the affect is universal on all displays.
I've never bothered learning that shook me solo, i always just made it up on the spot in a round about way, but I just stole it from you Pete haha. Thanks :)
Would like to hear a clean channel then kick the pedal in to get an idea of what it does...sounds great but I'm not sure what the pedal is adding if your already driving the amp
Nice demo Pete, that pedal sounds really cool...btw.: could You tell us about that wonderful ES 335 You use...looks great, sounds great...cheers, thank You!
+Pete Thorn Thank you, Pete, I've been admiring that guitar since watching your demo of the Oddfellow Caveman Overdrive. In the meantime the Cavemann V2 is in my setup and as you say it's a very naturally sounding pedal, great buy. So next up is to find a nice 335 :-)
Very interested in this. Are you playing through the clean channel? What are your settings on ur amp so i can get an idea of what its boosting on what channel please 😁
thanks for this demo. it really sounds good. Question for you, though. Since this is an always on type of thing, can the same results be achieved by turning the amp up and adjusting the eq? would the sound be the same? or would it just bee too loud, since a cranked amp is rarely tolerated by bandmates
no............................................................. isnt this a stupid question? can you emulate an overdrive without using an overdrive?/???? can you get a nice delay sound without using a delay???/
I have the pedal and I have quite a bit of background noise. Did you experience the same with your pedal? If so, how did you mitigate for it? Edit it out? Have an noise eliminator in your chain? Any pointers would be great. Cheers
I have this pedal, it is so essential to my rig, that I can't live without it. It started messin' up, so I took it apart, and had to solder some prongs on the input jack, totally fixed it. (I bought it "used") Seems they are a bit hastily assembled, cold solder joints, Chinese button, pots etc...However, they are available on Ebay. The printed board, with the circuits though, is very impressive, and very well made. Here's a clip of my amp sound with it, (No before and after) th-cam.com/video/7rL_3D8DS4E/w-d-xo.html
Seems like it works better with the bridge pickup…. Too bad there was not a separate switch for a neck pickup voicing. Unless you are soloing the neck pickup sounds flubby and undefined…. Other than this fact…. Nice pedal and demo!!
I watched the Paris show from Let There Be Rock with my bandmates and we were scratching our heads at the ungodly tone and sustain of the live guitar sound. I would joke that maybe the guitar tech was jacking the amps in back with an overdrive of some kind, I guess it was half true.
@@PeteThorn the fact that the tone changes means the pedal is far from flat frequency response or "linear boost". The proof would be to do a spectral analysis. This would show big movements in frequencie sup and down.

That intro was a brilliant example of how to sound like ACDC without playing them. Great riff. Familiar with Solo's page. Great job Pete.

Hi, I used this unit at my last gig last Friday. It sounds amazing with my Gibson Black Beauty and my Marshall 410H Amp.
Not to be crude, but that intro grabbed me by the fucking balls and reminded me why I started playing the electric guitar 😊
+Alex McMillan Thank you sir!
that 335 gets me every time, such a killer sounding guitar
all his guitars sound killer
wow, that ac/dc tone is spot on
+Paul Castro I think so too!
Another great, great video, Pete. Setting the pace for demos.
nearly every guitar player everywhere in some way was and is still effected by this iconic sound I think it answers to the commonality of rock/and crossover music top 40, radio music. the sound is a beast long liv rock
This guy Pete Thorn is a total badass! Much respect!
Great classic rock sound, Pete. Thanks for the history lesson. Angus was a big hero of mine!
Pete, thanks so much for playing the actual AC/DC riffs and not some watered down attorney approved BS!
I just bought the pedal. It’s in transit now! Can’t waiiiit!!!!!!
More addictive than sugar! Once you turn one of these on It will stay on.....just got a Klon replica and I am having that exact experience..great review as usual
In a word... BALLS! Good on ya Pete, and I really enjoy your presentations. Cheers!
Yep, Pete's definitely channelling AC/DC in that tune :O) As always another really good tune AND a really great demo.
thanks!
AC/PT
lol...another awesome demo
Glad you finally got your hands on the pedal version Pete, I really like mine.
Nice to see you too Fil in the video!
This pedal rocks!
LPB-1 was the first clean boost. Came out in the late 60's. I had one! (I'm old!)
Great video! Ken and Fil are like the bread and butter keeping sustenance in the tone of true great rock tone.
❤

Great Job Peter! -Love your demos!!!!
Cool demo Pete! Thanks!
Excellent vid/demo -- thanks again for sharing Pete.
Hey Pete, would you mind making a 2016 pedalboard rundown? You never did the 2nd part of the last one you did.
Pete, man, you impress me EVERY VIDEO ! Great tones and playing as per usual.
+bull dozer Thanks man!
Brutal , AWESOME

Cool review and interview Pete. I really enjoy your videos, cheers
+D Michael James thanks!!
Good review! Thanks letting us get deeper into this wonderfull pedal! ;)
Hey Pete, just curious, how often your guitars hit the table? :P
spot on. THAT sound.congatulations !
Nice video, nice tones ... love the thatch too !

Awesome Pete, and awesome playing as always!!
+Joshua Kraft thanks!!
Love the sound and acdc.... Cool men.. Cool 😎 👍
That is one awesome unit!
Sounds like anyone that is anyone has one or is getting one. I know I am as soon as possible. This bad boy is awesome.
It was cool to first follow Fil on the metroamp forum!
Fantastic Pete!
+Craig Morrison thanks!
this sound is very ac/dc but also very much of that era....even def leppardish from high and dry sound
Yeah! Nails the Sound Pete 🤘
What's the difference between this pedal and adding another 12AX7/ECC83 gain stage in front of a classic super lead circuit?
Nice 335 btw, and great playing as usual!
nice one pete, new pedal to me.
perfect demo!
so the big question is: Is this pedal now a part of Pete's pedal board?
My God, what an intro !!!
Sweet riffs!
Fu$king killer playing as ever, had my ear from the first note
+Nick Crompton thanks Nick!
very cool unit
Amazing!!!
This sounds pretty cool..Anyone know what type of Gibson that red one is?
this may be a dumb question, but what about this pedal with a drive or any other type pedal? how well does it work with others if you will? would you even want to add more?
I swear his LP looks just like my R9. Wonder if he sold that Paul and it ended up in my hands?
At 14:40 it sounded a bit like Joe Walsh. ;-)
Great video, loved the history of the piece and the passion of the inventor.
Great class in the history of tone and how make a great tone! Thanks Dr. Thorn PHD of Guitar University!
+Ben Worrell Thanks Ben!

great video to watch!....What's the song title please?..

Nice demo Pete, that pedal sounds really cool...btw.: could You tell us about that wonderful ES 335 You use...looks great, sounds great...cheers, thank You!
+Michael Heinz it's a 1963, with a rather thin/wide neck, a real PAF in the neck and a pat# in the bridge, it's had a headstock repair, and it ROCKS!

A must have for Acdc fans 😍

I got the pedal, and it sounds great, however how go reduce the hiss, any idea?
Do you think this works really only with a Marshall, or would it work as well with other amps? Did you try it with any other amps? Thanks
Awesome video and guitar tonnes Pete 👍🏻What were your settings on the SL68 ? you only mentioned that the bright Channel volume was on about 4. Thanks
+Didier ROEGIERS I think I had presence on 5 bass 7 or 8, mids 8 treble on 6 or so
Thanks Pete !
The thing is a good boost, try Jumping Jack Flash with it on a clean channel.
Hey. Can you help me with my question? Tell your guitar chain in your music studio. It will help me a lot. thank
Pete: why did you ask John Mayer to step in and put on a silly accent? Haha.
All joking aside. Great product, great boost. Spot on tone.
Hi. Can the tube screamer pedal or another pedal simulate this kind of distortion overdrive of Angus Young and AC/DC ? Thanks.
I'm wondering how it compares with a klon ktr (when klon is used as a boost)
it smokes it
Could anyone suggest an alternative? As these units aren't easy to obtain where i am.
Pete, review you Friedman Mini Dirty Shirley Head please!
+Phill PT Completely agree!
acdc tone? any marshal amp
Is that a cover or Original if cover tab please.
Hi Pete, would there be a market for an original system?

+Conrad Kriel originals!
Hi, Pete. Does this pedal boost some frequency more than others or is it basically a linear boost ? Thanks
+Nuccio raw Lo Presti I'd say pretty linear eq-wise
@@PeteThorn the fact that the tone changes means the pedal is far from flat frequency response or "linear boost". The proof would be to do a spectral analysis. This would show big movements in frequencie sup and down.
smoking openning song.
Thanks! Now I dont just want it, I need it!
Kick. ASS!
Pete Young! The lost brother!
What riff is this???
...how much ?
I swear, at first I thought Phil was a character played by Pete. Phil looks like the older version of Pete.
Les Paul sounding righteous! Sounds much better than my gf bitching. That's alright, I still got all my guitars.
