This is a review of the G.I. Joe samurai warrior; Budo. His outfit is a modernization of traditional samurai armor, done in army earth-tones. This character is an often forgotten martial artist in the line where ninjas reign supreme. A second version in flashier colors was part of a mail-away 4-pack in 1993. He just doesn't get much love.

Kevin, great work as always. I really love that you explained the cultural history behind the character. I wrote a term paper on the Samurai, in high school. I used my Budo as a visual aid.

Great review! I completely agree, I was not impressed with Budo until I bought the figure and physically had it... when all the gear is in place on the character looks very commanding and cool...

This is so rich in facts about the samurai. Thanks. I’ve always wondered how those action figures’ details were sculpted symmetrically.

Nice review. A couple things I'd like to mention I see as incorrect with this figure is his "ornamnetal sword" is on the wrong side of his body and upside down! A samurai never sheaths his sword blade down to prevent it from becoming dulled. It is also always on the left side of his body, drawn with the right hand.

one of the most underrated good guy joes IMHO. sure, he doesnt make much sense as a field combatant but i could see this dude training joes on close quarter weapons combat! While i do like him..he did stain his undies when u brought stormshadow v2 into the picture....

I really enjoyed this review! That said, I think you might have meant kendo rather than aikido. Aikido came about in the early 20th century, past the traditional era of samurai.

Hey Formbx257 I am a new subscriber and I had a question. I don't know if you can help me or not but I just inherited some 1980's G.I. JOE's from my uncle and I want to expand my collection, and the main figure I would like to get is a Cobra Officer. Do you know any place to get one in decent condition in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). If you could please reply thanks for the help keep up the good work 👍🙂

They study kenjutsu not aikido. Martial arts with "do" are 19th century interpretations meant only as a sport. While those with "jutsu" are the ones from the old age meant for actual killing e.g. war, self-defense, etc.

Since he probably would be attacking the enemy gun ablazing anyway I guess he dont mind having some swords on his back.

Never showed up in the cartoon and he never made a splash in the comic - which is weird cuz the comics were so ninja heavy! The 80s issues 80-89 was probably the least interesting of the first 100 issues so lots of good characters got lost in the shuffle

Kind of sad. I didn't grow up with TRU (it came late to Canada - 1984? Don't think I saw one in my area until '86). Online retailers like Amazon, BBTS and others are the future, I guess.
