This is a review of the second GI Joe mortar soldier expert, Downtown. He's a very oddly colored and sculpted figure, but his accessories are great. Many collectors say there is a variation: some figures have flesh-painted hands, some yellow painted. Is this really a variation or discoloration over time? Who knows. He could have been initially designed as an updated version of Short-Fuze (as many classic characters were being updated in that year).

formbx257, downtown is a basketball phrase. It's when a player shoots far away from the goal.

looks like a recoiless rifle. the green strap looks like it could be a waist and lumbar support for his back. heavy bags often have a wide waist strap. dont know why it would be painted green.

Weird that Hasbro would be subtle with a sports reference, considering we had figures like Bazooka, Hardball, and Grid Iron.

With a good repaint this figure could be vastly improved imo

I had this figure and didn't care for the helmet. The mortar kind of looks like a 57mm recoilless rifle on tripod.

Yes, it's complimentary. Other figures' color schemes are all over the place.

He is from Cleveland so I would guess that the brown and orange on the pants would be a nod to the Cleveland Browns. His shirt screams Miami Dolphins, but I see no reason as to why.

Those shin guards look like they might be from cricket. Which raises even more questions.

The 1990 Sonic Fighters Viper came with a gold version of Downtowns mortar, but it was called a grenade launcher for that release.

The can tines on the backpack was use to keep the mortar barrel cool.

weird color scheme aside, solid figure. just wish they would have used plastic from the backpack to make the tripod stronger, too fragile

the colors and design just started getting too funky for me after the GI Joe movie came out! never really knew why they strayed away from actual military coloring, starting with I think Gung Ho's colors. nice camo pattern, but it would have been nicer in the same colors they used for the 82/83 Stalker figure

I could be wrong, but I think the idea was that they felt like the figures had to look different from the earlier figures, which is why they moved more towards brighter, more individualized color schemes. I have to admit that as much as I'm not a fan of that trend now, it never really bothered me as a kid, and it was the same for all of my friends who were into GI Joe.

Not to add to the confusion, but his pants look like they have laces on the crotch, which is more akin to football pants. But they cover the whole leg, where football pants only go to below the knee. And the colors aren't ringing the bell for any professional team I recognize. Especially Ohio based ones.

downtown was an easy one for me to skip. the colors did it.
