Its feb 2023 i started this school year with band (august) and I can play the part that he did from imperial march, don’t know if thats regular or below 😅
I can’t stop smiling every time I see or hear a tuba. There’s just something unique about the instrument. Same with the baritone sax, or a bass clarinet. I love the low instruments in an orchestra.
My 2 1/2 year-old son has been watching this video (along with the others about additional instruments that the Minnesota Orchestra has made) every morning while he eats breakfast for the past month or so. He LOVES the tuba because of this and now he can explain to people how the instrument is played. Thank you for making this video!
It's about playing very aggressively without using tension. Most tubists struggle with 'filling out the horn' so to speak because they either have a very low energy, languid style of playing or they tense up with anxiety when they play. If you can stay very calm, both physically and mentally, and still manage to move a lot of air, then you suddenly find you have the freedom to make whatever sound you want, smooth or sharp.
Thank you so much for these videos! My two year old son is obsessed with instruments and music and wants to learn what each one is called and how they sound. I so appreciate having these videos to show him. They’re simple enough for a child, but not dumbed down or childish. Thank you very much for inspiring us!
Great tone!!!! That’s one big brass instrument!!! I play trombone, & played Sousaphone one summer. I have great respect for the tuba guys, takes a lot of air power!!
I respect the low brass because it takes lots of air Trombone baritone/euphonium/tuba especially bone cause they hold it up. And low brass kinda creates that sound that the band latches on too even trumpet horn and bassoon bass clarinet and bari sax are anchored by the low brass
I played tuba from grade 6 all the way to symphonic band at the end of highschool. Nice to watch, brings back memories of travelling around the world playing in a band.
Thank for this video-- great one to show my elementary music students who think tuba just "fart". This gives them the real mechanics along with some beautiful tunes.
Save up some Money, You’ll be able to get it, but think if it’s something you’ll wanna play, because you can go to music and arts if where you live has one around it.
Learned something new today! I don't play any kind of instrument. I was just curious how to play a tuba. I thought you just blow too. I'm 60, so I just learned something new. I even showed my 88 yr old mother.
I love the Candide in the outro . I’m a teenage brass player and that was the piece that got me started and I’ve played it it 3 orchestral groups that I’ve been in 🎵🎵🎼🎶
I played the Tuba in elementary school and middle school. Even made it to honors band and boy choir and had no clue how to read sheet music the way most people do. I could never memorize the names of the notes but I knew how to play the notes according to where they were at on the scale, then I'd memorize the song and just not use the sheet music. 😂 I did that with math to. I had my own ways of getting to the right answer and had no idea how to do things the way everyone else was taught. I probably would've graduated school had they let me teach myself. I'm like semi autistic or something I've just never been diagnosed because I nor my parents never seen it as a problem. I can figure out the answers I just have my own ways of doing it that are faster and more effective for me.
Ahh for most the tuba requires a double lip buzz - smaller brass instruments normally just buzz the upper lip. Tuba also requires an immense volume of air. Playing mine was a great warm up for me because it got the blood and lungs flowing.
When I was very little, I listened MANY times to the Columbia recording that had "Tubby the Tuba" (Victor Jory), "Peter and the Wolf" (Basil Rathbone), and Pan the Piper (Ted Tiller). But I was never all that interested in the Tuba. My own progression of instruments over the years was strange: Piano, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet. And then sometime in the middle of my life I saw a Canadian Brass concert live with Chuck Daellenbach on tuba. It didn't make me want to take up the tuba. But I sure started paying more attention to it.
I love the higher notes of the tuba. It's so beautiful. I also am gonna start tuba for concert Band. I play alto sax and euphonium. My director asked the euphoniums if anyone wants to play tuba cuz we don't have any this year lol so I said sure I'll Try it. I tried it and my tone is terrible and my breathing is awful. Can't sustain a note for more then 5 seconds. But I'm willing to work at it.
Love the demonstrations, my dad was a band director as well! I grew up listening to the MN Orchestra and studied with many of the Horn players back in the '80's while at the U of MN. As a band director, I am always looking you tube videos to share with my students and would love to see more of these demonstrations for all of the instruments!
Thanks, Jeffery! We're working on it :) We have 5 videos ready at minnesotaorchestra.org/guide. Thank you for sharing the joy of music with your students!
I always think/want to say "theyre so BIG", but I'm a piano player before anything else, so I remember that and I'm like "oh wait I could fit multiple safari animals inside my instrument at once". Love the tuba, though. So _DEEP_
Thanks, Steve. Here in 2022, trying to figure out if my tuba sample is lame. It is. Makes me wonder if they found some dev to rent instruments, and figure out how to make a few sounds and recorded that.
I’ve never bought a tuba in my life, and I alternate between 3 separate tubas for the type of playing I’ll do. It’s crazy what a school will do for one of their only tubas
Alex Madsen What do you make of the wedge shaped mouthpieces? Are they hype/marketing/Gimmick? Or worth a look? I am currently using a J. Marcinkiewicz N-1 (used it in college). I recently started playing again after not playing for 25 years.
nope nope nope............just no. while not a gimmick, a lot of players after a couple of years felt muscle degradation. for your own safety I would advise not to
Greater demonstration Mr. Campbell. Could you tell me the make and model of your instrument and is it equivalent to a six quarter horn? Thanks in advance.
I’ve been playing tuba since age 11! Love this guy’s enthusiasm about the instrument.

The tuba is a fine part of any orchestra. The deep tone is pleasing to one's ears.
My 2.5 year old son has to watch this video every night. We love this guy!
Same here! That's too funny
I think your gonna have a tuba prodigy
Just showed it to my 3y ❤ a very good way to introduce instruments!
Me encantan las tubas me gustaría poder tener una saludos desde argentina

It does I’m the only tuba and there’s like 50 of each instrument
I played tuba from grade 6 all the way to symphonic band at the end of highschool. Nice to watch, brings back memories of travelling around the world playing in a band.
I’m doing the same thing I’m a sophomore in high school currently
Thank for this video-- great one to show my elementary music students who think tuba just "fart". This gives them the real mechanics along with some beautiful tunes.
I don't play instruments, but tubas always fascineted me in between the world of instruments

A second generation tuba player, beautiful, the true king.
It’s such an expensive instrument. I really want to start playing again.

Thank you for allowing my son to see what a tuna is, how it sounds, and the cool song clips he can play. Excellent 👍
A tuna?
I love tuna too
What a magnificent tone. Thanks for video!
Best tuba intro ever for those curious about the bassy brass musical instrument.
I heard/experienced your performance with the orchestra (West Side Story). Nice.
This was a delight, thank you for sharing!
I've been playing a tuba since I was 11 and I love it how low I can buzz on the tuba

My favorite instrument to orchestrate with.

@@minnorch What mouthpiece are you using to play the tuba in this video?
This man is my idol
Oh my god. Me too
Nice. Tubas are big. My music teacher is Ms.Clatine. I’m in 3rd grade, Atlanta Elementary School.
I always think/want to say "theyre so BIG", but I'm a piano player before anything else, so I remember that and I'm like "oh wait I could fit multiple safari animals inside my instrument at once".

Thank you so much for your video! Now I would like to compose some solo for tuba.
Merci tuba player for your clearing explication.❤
Thanks, Steve. Here in 2022, trying to figure out if my tuba sample is lame. It is. Makes me wonder if they found some dev to rent instruments, and figure out how to make a few sounds and recorded that.
The Tuba is my favorite Instrument
Then you love your side hustle playing your tuba while following fat people.
I was hoping for him to play some excerpts on the F tuba.
Thanks, I loved your explanation. What are your favorite pieces on a tuba?
respect to this man-- but if you play at 0.75 speed, it's like he's hammered XD (probably true of a lot of videos)
Lmao
Nice playing! I wish I could afford a tuba.
I’ve never bought a tuba in my life, and I alternate between 3 separate tubas for the type of playing I’ll do. It’s crazy what a school will do for one of their only tubas
Amazing! Great ton...i love this instrument...
That sounds wonderful.
This is such a great vid. Thank you!
The Candide at the end caught me off guard!
It takes talent and it’s impressive but the sound of a tuba will always make me giggle
Thank you very much!! This was really interesting and educational. Thanks!
Our brass quintet knows our sound relies upon a strong tuba (bass). It's is the foundation every other part builds upon.
His dad is my private lesson teacher 👀
Great video
This was fascinating
I think it's amazing how he uses that slide to adjust as he plays to stay in tune. And he adjusts solely based on sound alone.
6/4 tuba it looks giant
5/4
sounds great dat Tuba
Great Job!
Salut ce model este tuba
Me: *eats beans*
My ass: 0:00
Do they need to buzz a certain note or keep a certain pitched buzz?
Great video!
@Wolf Do You Have a tuba
alredy
1:45 excerpt?
I love the tuba!!!
Brillant sound !
What brand of mouthpiece is that?
It's part of the Monette Prana series, specifically the Monette Prana Tuba 94

What is the name of the piece in the outro at the end?
What a beauty sound
Fascinating instrument well played.... 😎
Tried the tuba briefly in middle school after starting out on trombone and switching to clarinet. Lasted maybe two weeks. Wasn't for me.
It’s fine I was the same with trombone than euphonium that I’m a happy tuba player.
It takes it out of you. I have powerful lungs so I did quite fine with Tuba.
I switching from trombone to tuba
I love the tuba
Based
Can you demonstrate the saxophone
What happens if you can't last long buzzing too much?
can you send me the link for this video please i need it for an assignment that is due today
I cook really crank out a trumpet but struggled
. My music teacher handed me the tuba in grade 7 and said I probably could sing this better
Greater demonstration Mr. Campbell. Could you tell me the make and model of your instrument and is it equivalent to a six quarter horn? Thanks in advance.
As far as I know Steve plays a B&S MRP CC tuba. While considered a Large 5/4, it is very very close to a 6/4 tuba sound. Wonderful instruments!
Wow you're good at that
He makes it sound like a contrabassoon
Does anyone know the name of the first song at the beginning of the video? or all that he demonstrates in the video!
Ride of the Valkyries
In Mexico, Tuba Are Monsters.
So nice & LVLY instruments. I lv MUSIC very much.
The name of autro music please.
Very cool
I play this video for my wife every time she farts audibly.
Please tell me your secrets for releasing your notes
Really cool!
What tuba is he playing on? Is that a B&S?
My seven year old daugther just chose the tuba as her instrument in music school, i am a bit overwelmed by the idea!
Playing the tuba sounds like a real...er...blast!
amo esse tipo de musica
Love to tuba
I play the trombone but i wanna switch to tuba soon
I am using this to see if my pet cat is actually afraid of tubas. Had a strange experience with him and a tuba on TV last night...
This sounds like when it’s raining
Reminds me of a new song called GOOBA
Same
Now that I think about it, I agree
The song at 1:44 sounds so familiar
Tuba Steve!
very good!
Could anyone tell me the name of the work at the end?
Symphony no. 5 by Sergei Prokofiev (first movement)
It has grave tone
actually it is new age contrabass tuba it was bigger than normal concert tuba
I like it because it is bass
Play "la guanabana" from Noel Torres lol
Now do #SpanishFlea!
very Goood
