Timpani and low brass are often (but not always) paired. Brass and percussion were later added to symphonic orchestral arrangements. Lower woodwind and cello pairings are common for the same reason. Oystein B glosses over the hilarious missteps in bass brass instrument history. Cimbasso, Serpent, Ophicleide, etc are delightful precursors to the modern tuba. He had limited time, and didn't bore the audience with the precursors.
It makes me happy to see a tuba being used more melodically, I can only imagine how how that would sound live, would completely over power the room and sound amazing
In 1937, my dad was the Grand National Tuba solo Champion of the United States at age 16…he went on to become the brass section leader of The United States Marine Band “The President’s Own”….triple tonguing a tuba is no joke! Bravo to this guy!
In a "classic" concert you do NOT cheer within, you applaud at the end and if you are REALLY exited you get up and give "standing ovations". And in symphonies with more than one part you only applaud at the very end and NOT in between!😉

I have heard a lot of tubas in my life (I am not a player, was just an organiser and support worker for TubaChristmas events) - and the expression, range, and subtleties - and flexibility - of this performance is right in keeping with Dr. Phillip's philosophies of Tuba. I helped out getting musicians where they needed to be at the conference and for this my private lessons instructor David Palmer got me a lesson with him for a half hour he’s absolutely the most phenomenal to the player there has ever been or likely will ever be

yeah actually, during 6th grade I wanted to play the trombone>trumpet>french horn instructor AND band had me voluntold to play the tuba since then, haven’t stopped since, going into freshman year now!

Well, TED talks aren't exclusively for musicians, so they were experiencing something new. I'm a tuba player, and I was neither captivated by the performance, nor the narrative.
As the organiser of this event, I can tell you that the audience was well and truly into this performance. Norwegians are just a bit more restrained as an audience.
@@geoli6407 the valve transitions on low brass are fairly choppy so slurring can sometimes sound like tounging if it's fast. neither of us know for sure tho
I had a buddy back in highschool who played the tuba. We took a class trip to disney world and he carried his tuba everywhere. It wasn't until we got to the airport ON OUR WAY HOME that he realised that there were WHEEELS on his tuba case. lmao!
Very cool performance. I played myself for several years a trombone and my dad played at the same time didgeridoo. This made me experiment with playing techniques and your performance reminded me about these times in my childhood. I really understand how complex it is what you just showed. Very impressive, I take a deep bow. Your techniques seem to have quite some similarities with how people play didgeridoo.

Well, forgive me for assuming that you mean it didn’t lead to much. If so, that’s your fault. If you didn’t get a free college education out of it, that’s a complete waste and shame. There are tons of college bands and not a “ton” of players for certain instruments.....I was an “average” tuba player and received my degree for free🤷🏻♂️

After seeing this video for the first time about a year ago, Fnugg actually inspired me to switch from trumpet to tuba for marching band and concert. I have no regrets about doing it and will probably be using Fnugg as my I&E competition piece in a few years.
What an amazing performance. At the end, it sounded very reminiscent of a digeridoo. I wonder if it is possible to do circulatory breathing while playing the tube to keep that droning noise going without the pauses for breath.

Andy ok. 1 songs does. you got me. stuff like that is written for a lot of bass instruments but generally they either subtly drop out and back in to breathe or stagger breathing with others in their section. you can’t maintain intonation and a bold sound with circular breathing.
How much longer will instruments and musicians like this last in the world of guitars and synthesized keyboards? I long for the days of big bands and orchestras. This gentleman has shown the beauty of man and instrument. One can only hope that men will continue to play instruments other than guitars.

Played for a number of years. He is amazing. I had a director that could play the Stars and Strips Forever piccolo solo but this is a whole different level.
I wonder if that last tone was played or sung :D I don't event get to that height on the horn (which is usually a lot higher than the tuba already) and I play for 10 years now.

Although I play flute I really love the tuba and the lower woodwinds, like the bass clarinet.

Meeting Oystein Baadsvik was one of the greatest experiences of my tuba collegiate career. One of the kindest, most talented, musicians out there.

Yeah, he’s using a smaller model, because Eb and F tubas are generally smaller. But it’s still impressive he can do that.

I started in 8th grade now I’m a Sousa player in my band. I’m so glad I switched from clarinet to tuba. Wonderful decision.

I wonder if that last tone was played or sung :D I don't event get to that height on the horn (which is usually a lot higher than the tuba already) and I play for 10 years now.
Multiphonics. The harmonies are so satisfying, but really tough to do accurately.
It's definitely possible to play that high if you have the perfect embouchure, but not many people are able to play that.
Daniel Syrowatka it's actually not as hard as it looks and sounds. I'm only 19 and a freshman in college and I can play notes up there. It's just a matter of figuring out how to do it
It's a matter of relaxing, while holding your embouchure in just the right way.
I’ve been playing 3 years freshman in high school and multiphonics and high notes are super easy
