On 09/18/2019 as a Lyft driver I had the pleasure of meeting a nice, handsome fella. He asked if he could ride on the front seat, said he was on his way to pick up his dog pet at a veterinarian clinic in Santa Monica Ca. I couldn't help noticing familiar face features so I asked if he was an actor, yes! he replied. Steven McQueen was his name, the grandson of the GREAT Steve McQueen!!! He produced an Id card. He didn't have to, the resemblance is amazing. Later at home I told my family, then I Google him and sure enough that was the same nice handsome fella I met earlier!! Just felt like sharing this fine encounter I had. Thanks

Steve should have received an Oscar for his performance in Papillion. He did a an outstanding job as did Dustin Hoffman. I believe that film was underrated.

Along with male actors John Wayne, Yul Brenner, Paul Newman, Sean Connery, Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Marlon Brando, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Redford, James Cagney, Gene Hackman, etc al, Steve McQueen could carry a moderate film and make it a classic by his mere presence in it. Truly the personification of a 'Movie Star'. To pass at 50 is beyond tragic. RIP, Steve and thank you for the legacy of your incredible work.

He looked forward to life after death. Steve said: “My only regret in life is that I was not able to tell people about what Christ did for me.” and so Greg Laurie, pastor and long-time fan wrote a book in his honour, “Steve McQueen. The Salvation of an American Icon”. He also made a documentary film about his conversion
A fantastic dedication to one of my favorite actors! To this day one of my favorite movies is Bullitt! I just love the driving scene that's way beyond what the movies were back when Bullitt was produced. Thanks so much for your research you've put into Steve McQueen's life, starting with his childhood (quite interesting) to the end, with alternative medical treatment.

I saw steve mcqeen on the set of "The Hunter" . I was hired by the casting company as an extra for the filming. When I saw Steve up close for the first time , he was walking past meto get some lunch. So as much as I wanted to ask for an autograph I just looked and smiled at him . Well , I was surprised to see he gave me the biggest smile right back ! I saw the most beautiful aqua blue eyes I had ever seen . I had heard he was dying of cancer and that he was drinking lots of fruit juices to see if it would help overcome cancer . I was at marina towers when the film company dropped a car into the river . Later the next day , we filmed a car scene . Unfortunately my only job was to walk across the street after the racing scene was shot . So I still have a pay stub from my work on this film . It was wonderful and exciting being on the set and a memorable experience, I will never forget. I was lucky enough to See his gorgeous face before he left this world. A GREAT ACTOR ! GOD BLESS HIS HEART !

I was a British soldier based in Hong Kong. In 1966 I met Steve McQueen in an Aussie Pub in Kowloon called the Waltsing Matilda. He was playing cards with some of the crew of The Sand Pebble move. I was invited to join them, not that I played cards. He being a veteran just wanted to give a little time to a young soldier. We had a couple of beers and I headed back to Gun Club Barracks.
The Great Escape. My favorite McQueen movie. Steve, that Army Air Corps leather jacket, that baggy blue sweatshirt, cut off below the elbows.....and of course, that motorcycle.
McQueen loved motorcycles and dune buggies. Used to see him daily (almost) terrorizing the streets of Palm Springs and on the sand dunes of the Cathedral City area on Sundays when he was in town. He was also a frequent visitor to Idyllwild were he had a favorite coffee shop. He would ride one of his twenty-five motorcycles to Idyllwild in the snow.
Bruce Lee loved Steve. Bruce always said the most impressive thing about S.M. was the respect his friends would get after being introduced by Steve. "This is my friend Bruce" that was enough.

I remember Steve McQueen being a pallbearer as well as In Like Flint star who's name escapes me. 07/20/73 is a date that I'll never forget. It really hit me hard because as a kid I thought he was unstoppable but it started me in Martial Arts the next year which was a positive thing in my young life but thank goodness Chuck Norris was up and coming by 78 because they tried replacing Bruce with fake Bruce's which started to soure the US towards martial Arts movies Man what a bad time for martial arts movies. Jackie Chan hadn't caught on yet here so for a few years the Japanese were feeling the void with Sonny Chiba What a weird time in martial arts films for sure. Loved Sonny's movies. Steve McQueen was AWESOME !!!! He was one of my childhood heroes. I saw the "Blob" when it first hit the silver screen. I was around 9 years old and that movie scared the shit out of me LOL. I was watching for the Blob to crawl out from under my bed for weeks.

I remember meeting Steve McQueen back in 1977 when I was working as a life guard at the Beverly Wishire Hotel and he was actually living there at the hotel after his divorce. He loved his motorcycle and would bring it up to his room on the service elevator and not leave it parked down in the garage. Interesting good dude, it was an honor meeting him. Sad he passed so young..
I was always wondering who the guy with the cool demeanor in the movie Magnificent Seven was...and watching this confirmed it! He was definitely the king of cool :)
He only did 10 minutes of that car chase , Bud Ekins did the bulk of it. When the rearview mirror is not on the driver it is Bud Ekins.. when the rearview mirror shows McQueen well u get it, it was McQueen driving.

Steve was my very first celebrity crush when I was about 11 years old. Never stopped admiring him either. Great presence onscreen. Sad about his crappy childhood and I am glad he made his life better.

I was living in the Denver area at the time of his death. I was working on my '67 Mustang Coupe, installing a Boss 302 mated w/ an M22 top-loader, when the news report came over the FM radio. Almost made me cry, 'cause I was building that Mustang in homage to his Bullet version, right down to the same color. I know his had a 428, but I figured the Boss 302 made up for some of C.I. difference. Very fun car that would pull 12 second quarters all day long. The M22 w/ the Hurst shifter was so much quicker than the original T-10 Ford mated the Boss to.

Steve had a rough and difficult life. It's amazing how his life worked out. The odds did not favor him, but he overcame many obstacles to triumph in the end. Too bad he never got an Oscar for Sand Pebbles or Bullitt.

Hi a heartiest thanks to you brother for your esteemed feedback. I really salutes to one of the greatest actors the world ever had. He was really a diehard sportsman and a great actor.
The cancer didn't kill him- the stress of the operation did. The doctors in America warned him not to do it, the stress on his heart would not take it. It didn't. Hours after surgery in Mexico to remove a tumor from his abdomen, he died from a massive coronary.
Paul Harvey used to say, "And now for the rest of the story." He knew that what happens after famous episodes, or behind the scenes during them, offer fascinating perspectives. So often we don't get to know how lives played out for these famous people. So, Mr. Skinner, I applaud your efforts. In the case of Mr. McQueen I had always heard a rather disparaging story of Mr. McQueen going to Mexico for unapproved treatments. Yet, Mr. Skinner reveals that the behavior was quite understandable given Mr. McQueen's options. While famous people are often isolated as icons, they are human beings - often struggling with the same kinds of problems that affect the rest of us. Thanks again Jerry.
I knew Steve, briefly, as he lived in Santa Paula, Ca and hung out with a friend, Von Dutch, at my fathers gas station on the other side of town. What no one says about Steve was that he was ENORMOUSLY GENEROUS $$$ with his money, especially charities for disadvantaged children. He gets no credit for it because he gave his money away very quietly, not like celebrities now days who have their agent take a picture of them handing a check to a crippled veteran. FYI, the asbestos causing his mesothelioma was likely caused by a brief but intense exposure he received to asbestos while in the Marine Corp on a work duty gutting the inside of an old WWII Liberty Ship. To finish a thought, I do not know for a fact that he left that $200,000 to Boys Camp, but from what I know he was certainly capable of gifting it to them, AND having also given away a whole lot more over the course of his life, all very quietly of course. That was Steve for you, the "King of (quite) Cool".
He made great films, best remembered was Bullitt then Papillon, On Any Sunday, LeMans and many films that made sense. Even if he had a troubled life as a kid (who doesn't) he was still a great man and actor. This is why I myself liked him as a kid in the days when he did Western films and followed other films until the day he died. I miss Steve. When a new movie came on screen, I used to say: "Here comes Stevuchio!". He was my favorite actor.
I read his biography and I believe he was at least this generous but he was an inspiration to many including myself.. may his soul rest in his Lord and Savoir Christ Jesus, amen.
Stive was a great actor and a giver, and he will also be remember to all 911 Porsche owners and lovers of Porsche’s due-to a fact that although he was not with us his 911 made history. He is still an inspiration and an iconic man. God be with him, and god be with all the Grate actors that have also past away.
I loved Steve McQueen because remind me so much of what Denzel Washington is today. And that is one man that stands out and you know who he is, just like Bronson Eastwood Charlton Heston excetera excetera. One thing you fail to mention was his love for martial arts and his teacher Bruce Lee to him that was very important. Also you forgot to mention the movie Bullet which is one of my top Steve McQueen movies.
He developed Mesothelioma, something my father has recently been diagnosed with, 60 years after serving in the US navy in Korea. Ships were loaded with asbestos.

Thank you Mr Skinner. It is sad that back then they didn't know how to treat mesothelioma. I've lived with it both in my lung & abdomen for 8 years. During some of that time I've been in remission.
And he did found the love of God in Jesus and became born again. So, for all the "born again" Christians, we will see him again, this time in person up there in heaven. Hallelujah!

McQueen loved motorcycles and dune buggies. Used to see him daily (almost) terrorizing the streets of Palm Springs and on the sand dunes of the Cathedral City area on Sundays when he was in town. He was also a frequent visitor to Idyllwild were he had a favorite coffee shop. He would ride one of his twenty-five motorcycles to Idyllwild in the snow.
Bruce Lee loved Steve. Bruce always said the most impressive thing about S.M. was the respect his friends would get after being introduced by Steve. "This is my friend Bruce" that was enough.
INCOG NITO Wow. SM was that kind of a guy. For a guy who was mistreated by his loved ones he carried a lot of love in his heart. Being a mother I cannot even grasp the pain SM struggled with his mom. Then she passed away before they could really reconcile like he always wanted to. I mean yeah they were still in each others lives but they never resolved anything. Sad. But thanks for sharing. @@katmanluke7187 As a kid I remember reading a lot about Bruce Lee's famous friends talking about their experiences with him. I remember Steve McQueen being a pallbearer as well as In Like Flint star who's name escapes me. 07/20/73 is a date that I'll never forget. It really hit me hard because as a kid I thought he was unstoppable but it started me in Martial Arts the next year which was a positive thing in my young life but thank goodness Chuck Norris was up and coming by 78 because they tried replacing Bruce with fake Bruce's which started to soure the US towards martial Arts movies Man what a bad time for martial arts movies. Jackie Chan hadn't caught on yet here so for a few years the Japanese were feeling the void with Sonny Chiba
What a weird time in martial arts films for sure. Loved Sonny's movies. Sad he went down in popularity when Chuck showed up but who could outdo the mighty 1980's ass kicking Chuck Norris
@ I remember reading that of his many celeb students that Lee had, he considered Steve to be the only real potential badass in the bunch .
My fondest memories are watching Bullet,The Hunter and the Great Escape with my dad. Classic movies.

Steve McQueen was AWESOME !!!! He was one of my childhood heroes. I saw the "Blob" when it first hit the silver screen. I was around 9 years old and that movie scared the shit out of me LOL. I was watching for the Blob to crawl out from under my bed for weeks.

England & remember watching many Steve Mc. Queen movies, back in the late 60's early 70's, back home. I remember meeting Steve McQueen back in 1977 when I was working as a life guard at the Beverly Wishire Hotel and he was actually living there at the hotel after his divorce. He loved his motorcycle and would bring it up to his room on the service elevator and not leave it parked down in the garage. Interesting good dude, it was an honor meeting him. Sad he passed so young..
Steve was one of my favorite actor, so sorry he died so young.
I was always wondering who the guy with the cool demeanor in the movie Magnificent Seven was...and watching this confirmed it! He was definitely the king of cool :)

Steve was my very first celebrity crush when I was about 11 years old. Never stopped admiring him either. Great presence onscreen. Sad about his crappy childhood and I am glad he made his life better.

I was living in the Denver area at the time of his death. I was working on my '67 Mustang Coupe, installing a Boss 302 mated w/ an M22 top-loader, when the news report came over the FM radio. Almost made me cry, 'cause I was building that Mustang in homage to his Bullet version, right down to the same color. I know his had a 428, but I figured the Boss 302 made up for some of C.I. difference. Very fun car that would pull 12 second quarters all day long. The M22 w/ the Hurst shifter was so much quicker than the original T-10 Ford mated the Boss to.
I didn't know that he died so young, tragic, very informative documentary. He was one of my favorite actors, and he is missed.
A sad ending for a great actor, sportsman, and human being...he will always be remembered.

Steve had a rough and difficult life. It's amazing how his life worked out. The odds did not favor him, but he overcame many obstacles to triumph in the end. Too bad he never got an Oscar for Sand Pebbles or Bullitt.

It’s a pity that Skinner, if he did a thorough research would have known prior to his diagnosis, McQueen had committed his life to Christ and received healing of the gross neglect and pain of his childhood. He regretted not having the time to tell people about Christ did for him. Shame he omitted that important factor.

He died of Pancreatic Cancer, just like Steve Jobs and my late husband.
The cancer didn't kill him- the stress of the operation did. The doctors in America warned him not to do it, the stress on his heart would not take it. It didn't. Hours after surgery in Mexico to remove a tumor from his abdomen, he died from a massive coronary.
Paul Harvey used to say, "And now for the rest of the story." He knew that what happens after famous episodes, or behind the scenes during them, offer fascinating perspectives. So often we don't get to know how lives played out for these famous people. So, Mr. Skinner, I applaud your efforts. In the case of Mr. McQueen I had always heard a rather disparaging story of Mr. McQueen going to Mexico for unapproved treatments. Yet, Mr. Skinner reveals that the behavior was quite understandable given Mr. McQueen's options. While famous people are often isolated as icons, they are human beings - often struggling with the same kinds of problems that affect the rest of us. Thanks again Jerry.

I knew Steve, briefly, as he lived in Santa Paula, Ca and hung out with a friend, Von Dutch, at my fathers gas station on the other side of town. What no one says about Steve was that he was ENORMOUSLY GENEROUS $$$ with his money, especially charities for disadvantaged children. He gets no credit for it because he gave his money away very quietly, not like celebrities now days who have their agent take a picture of them handing a check to a crippled veteran. FYI, the asbestos causing his mesothelioma was likely caused by a brief but intense exposure he received to asbestos while in the Marine Corp on a work duty gutting the inside of an old WWII Liberty Ship. To finish a thought, I do not know for a fact that he left that $200,000 to Boys Camp, but from what I know he was certainly capable of gifting it to them, AND having also given away a whole lot more over the course of his life, all very quietly of course. That was Steve for you, the "King of (quite) Cool".

He made great films, best remembered was Bullitt then Papillon, On Any Sunday, LeMans and many films that made sense. Even if he had a troubled life as a kid (who doesn't) he was still a great man and actor. This is why I myself liked him as a kid in the days when he did Western films and followed other films until the day he died. I miss Steve. When a new movie came on screen, I used to say: "Here comes Stevuchio!". He was my favorite actor.

Stive was a great actor and a giver, and he will also be remember to all 911 Porsche owners and lovers of Porsche’s due-to a fact that although he was not with us his 911 made history. I loved Steve McQueen because remind me so much of what Denzel Washington is today. And that is one man that stands out and you know who he is, just like Bronson Eastwood Charlton Heston excetera excetera. One thing you fail to mention was his love for martial arts and his teacher Bruce Lee to him that was very important. Also you forgot to mention the movie Bullet which is one of my top Steve McQueen movies.
