I always revisit my packing list on the plane ride home. I will have just repacked my bags, and I know which pair of pants or top I never wanted to take off, which shirt always made me sweaty, and which item never really dried or wrinkled horribly when I hand washed it. I make notes describing weather conditions, or which clothing really worked.
Solid toiletries are the way to go. I cut my soap bar and shampoo bars in half, and thanks to YOU, Maggi, I put them in mesh bags which both fit in a single Matador soap pouch.
I am still working at getting my items into a single carry-on pack whose weight I can actually carry! It’s a goal I work toward on every trip.

And it‘s a great idea to revise the list on the ride home! Seems to be a perfect time to do that.
On the just in case list - I do bring one thing when traveling internationally that I tend to leave home when we travel domestically - a small medical kit with medications for three days per person if we were to get sick. Finding where to buy various meds when you're sick in a foreign country can be taxing, worse when you all come down with something, so I pack three days of the most likely needed meds so I have time to feel a bit better before venturing out to find what we may need for a longer term illness or even for minor things like a headache. I don't need to take bottles of meds, but just enough to get us through the first few days.
I do the same. 🤗 I bring enough to survive a day or to and then restock if necessary.

I would love to see your list guys, sometimes I think mine is pretty basic: tylenol, advil, pepto bismol and aspirin.

@@cecilereyna for our international travels I usually bring advil, tylenol (in case we need to alternate for high fever), immodium, colase, benedryl, pepto chewables, bonine, dayquil/niquil capsules, and elderberry tablets with zinc.
The info you have is so practical, love it all. I always throw a plastic knife in my backpack. Its amazing what it can cut. Or a pair of scissors. Also throw in a note to keep track of what you need to take or leave next time because when I get home i forget to go back and make that change.
I have a lot of experience traveling from a very cold climate to a very warm climate. Sometimes I bring a very cheap puffer jacket that compresses down into a small bag. Then I only have a small bag to find room for in my backpack.
A couple of times I had heavy winter coats that were worn out and ready to be trashed. I wore them to the airport and then threw them away in the airport before I got on the plane.
When I lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there was a UPS Store in the airport, and I would mail my heavy clothes back to my parents house from the airport.

Maggi,the queen of minimalist travel! 😊 Att home we use washing strips to clean laundry instead of liquid or powder. As a bonus they travel well and can be cut into small pieces to wash a few items. We love Earth Breeze. ❤❤

Making a list of things actually used/not used in a trip--after five years of traveling with just a handcarry I only realized this this year 😂
This is such an underrated video. I have always been a chronic over-packer. I get stick in the "Just In Case" categories, and I come back with many things I didn't use or wear. I hate it. I find I'm often on the edge of the 23kg max for my checked bags, and I'm determined to change it. This video was so helpful and I can't wait to implement it.

I’ve been living out of a normal carry on sized roll aboard and backpack for almost 5 years. I always evaluate what I’m bringing and I leave it behind next time.
Love peak designs packing cubes, love matador products, have the toothpaste tubes and soap bags. Lots of good tips here

I do the same, I can fit all of my underwear and socks in mine and leave room in my bag for other things.

Hi Maggi !!😊😊 excellent video & So True that it is an evolution. And each trip has its challenges. Ours coming up soon is heavy duty winter gear as we may be spending long days out in Alaskan weather with family - soooo I am taking 1 of my husband’s Sorels and I decided not to take mine but instead take some smaller lighter felt boots (Lobben), 1. So he will have the same (share the burden, same backpacks, same space) & then we have to take hiking pants & wool underwear plus socks….carry our warm coats & hats/gloves. And then our plane clothes & one other set to change into plus extra underwear socks becomes our «regular clothes» … it is not a long trip but it will be a challenge to pack for carry on only. But we have horrible connections & a 13 hour layover coming home & I just do not want us to lose a bag. So the 30 L arcane duffel (bought after seeing yours (❤️) & after a trip of trying to live out of small toploading backpacks 😬) & a PC bag for underseat is the plan 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I am 95% sure we can do this. It is easier with 2 as we share «tech» & toiletries, so I usually give my husband the solid things & I carry the 311 and he carries the small glasses case with our «tech» 😂 (small battery, tiny cables & plug & your tiny flashlight which I totally use at night here on the farm…200 lumens is awesome!) I did 13L & a small crossbody this summer - so 30L with boots & larger PC bag - I can do this, yes?!… crazy to think I have come so far… from a roller bag & big underseat bag… 😂 Wow! But I love it…I love walking off the plane & we always get tagged thru customs because of «contact with large animals» & being farmers, so not having to also deal with checked luggage is nice. Definitely appreciate your videos (& humor!!) - I learn a lot & have the occasional chuckle too 🥰 Happy travels to both of you!!!
I am sure you can do it and Alaska sounds great. Even though I have never been and I guess Austrian weather is not as extreme (even though here in the mountain house, we‘re on 1500 m altitude and already have 15cm of snow), my „trick“ in the winter is usually to bring more thermo underwear (I wear it over normal underwear) and less „normal“ clothes and then I just exchange/wash the innermost layer. Makes me feel clean again and reduces the amount of things I need to bring. And I find that my summer hiking pants (which are usually relatively wind proof) and warm underwear underneath is a killer combination to go hiking in colder weather. Plus, I feel like some thermo pants would looks nice enough to be mistaken for a black legging, so maybe that would also be an option on an airplane (even though I would probably not do that, because I am too insecure for leggings… 😂). I also layer other things. For example I have a thin headband and thin gloves out of Merino wool that I layer underneath a beanie/warmer gloves on very cold days. Plus, when I have to stand outside for longer periods of time, I love those heating packets that you can glue on your socks and then they stay warm for a few hours. 😅 I hope you have a fantastic trip to Alaska! @@MaggiFuchs Some GREAT ideas there! I am not too worried about wearing my wool long underwear (over regular, just in case folks don't know) two days in a row, and yes, changing actual underwear definitely will help! (If my long underwear was synthetic, I could not do this, in case others do not know.) Summer hiking pants are a great idea. I am not sure mine are because they are made from some fabric that does not breathe well. I hate them in summer, but they are good in winter. Although, I would prefer some that breathe. But they have zips along the legs, so 🤞🏼. Layering is a great idea and I think I will try to squeeze in a few thin gloves made in some fancy material that reflect heat. It will help to keep our hands warmer. I forgot them! Foot warmers, never actually tried, but can buy there & we do have plans to go to a sporting goods store! Yes, Alaska is colder than here, and if we will be out all day on a frozen lake or in the snow... I want to be somewhat prepared. I have a wool cardigan I am bringing that I can wear as casual daywear and also for a layer under my big coat. I love Alaska best in the summer, July-September are my favorite months, but that is the most difficult time for us to get away. So, winter it is! :-) And we enjoy that too. OH, and on the plane, we wear our ankle boots. I like my Blundstones. (& I would not bring my big down coat unless we were not maybe going ice fishing... standing around in the cold, brrr, and maybe windy.... more brrr.... otherwise I would bring a fleece and a shell which with a wool cardigan and wool underwear would be MORE than enough. That might work for ice fishing too, but I don't want to risk being cold. I hate being cold! And nothing beats down in the cold.... I REALLY want a packable Patagonia down coat. So.... I might try to buy one this trip.) Wow... another long answer, but thank you for the tips! Hmmm... now I am thinking should I pack a shell/rain coat... hmmm!!! :-) I will lay it all out and see! ❤Thank you! Un excelente tip es ese de tratar de vivir una semana con lo que llevas en la maleta. Yo pongo mis cremas en unos recipientes pequeñitos. En casa solo utilizo las cremas que están en esos recipientes y veo cuantos días me duran. Así se cuantos recipientes tengo que llevar para cada viaje, dependiendo de su duración.
Lo mismo para el shampoo, los jabones. Y otros toiletries. Si a algún recipiente le cabe demasiado producto que no tiene caso llevar, tengo tiempo de buscar otro más pequeño Así no llevo peso extra y ahorro espacio.
Lo mismo para las cosas que necesito para lavar la ropa en el viaje.

Thank you for your tips ! I travelled with only my pack back for 3 months a few years ago, but it was easy since I didn't need my laptop and it was summer in latin america, I didn't have any warm clothes. Now I want to leave for much more time, to be able to work from my lapop, and go through different climates... So your videos are usefull :) But as the first leg of my trip is in summertime, I will have time to adjust and I could buy some gear in the way maybe.
Happy to hear that! :) I always bring clothes that I can layer when I start in the hot climate. I always bring a longsleeve and a thin sweater and a rainjacket. When I layer these things, it usually is enough for the first colder days. If it gets really cold, I would also do like you suggested and go buy something warm on the way. ;-)

I just bought a Brewspoon on special as a comfort item for me. It's like a plunger for making coffee. Plus, ground beans and a small milk is cheaper than buying coffees. Another great video, Maggi!
How well does that work? I went with an Aeropress Go for the same reason on the last trip, and bought beans from a local roaster. The Brewspoon looks like it takes up a lot less space at the cost of not being able to do espresso-style.
Looks interesting. :) I don‘t drink coffee, but Everson always travels with soluble coffee (Illy makes quite a decend one - or so he says) when we fly or his tiny Moka Cup when we travel by car. I will show him the Brewspoon. :)

Thank you for your videos. Last year i was able to pack my first trip alone with only one bag pack and personal items. That trip to Vienna was amazing and super comfortable. Now i am packing for a longer trip to Prague 😊

I feel like talking about travel shoes could fill a whole video series of its own. 😅 I bring, like you, a universal pair of shoes and sandals (in the summer) or houseshoes (in the winter). When I go to different climates, I will wear the one I need for the trip on the way to the airport and risk getting cold/wet feet in the winter. But I also infamously returned from Brazil to Austrian winter earlier this year wearing Flip flops with socks because I got so pissed of with the disastrous Tropicfeel shoes that I threw them away… 😂
Hi Maggi, a very nice video as usual. Before I start thinking about traveling with carry on luggage only, I think I have to tackle my everyday bag..... I usually take a small backbag (Rucksack) to my job, and I have tried to get rid of things I carry everyday, because it can get quite heavy, and it always seem to accumulate... I always carry a power bank (because the bus ticket is now on my phone) charging cable, umbrella, toiletries etc and they seem to multiply.... Do you have any tips for an everyday bag ( eg a light backbag etc) As always I hope you and your husband are doing well.

I agree, EDC bags can get quite heavy. But I feel it‘s the same evolution as with travel gear. A few years ago, my bag was also a lot heavier. But then I started looking to optimize things, and slowly started to find things that would be good replacements or even replace several things at once. For example, when my large umbrella broke, I bought a tiny one. And when the small Anker magnetic powerbank that works with my phone was released, I got one and removed my bulky powerbank and the cables - things like this. And I would probably organize things into pouches, e.g. stuff I need at work, stuff I need daily - and then just quickly add and remove the pouches depending on the day. I hope this helps. :)
I have the same problem. I've optimized things over the years but my EDC is still rather heavy but I still carry most, if not all, of these things with me when I travel. I just started to pick and choose more wisely. A lighter or more compact hand mirror, lightweight foldable groceries bags,smaller umbrella, or a rain hat if it's not quite raining, smaller charging cables... And light but good quality pouches to section everything in its right place! I hate just having everything thrown into my bag (or, well, backpack. That's what I usually wear now because it's easier to carry the weight ). I also try to not bring too big a water bottle and maybe in the winter I don't even bring one. The only toiletries I bring are usually chapstick, sanitizer, tweezers, nail file and hand lotion, but I always have a small medical kit with me. You say you bring a lot of things to your job, but do you have an office or somewhere you can store things in? For example, my work backpack has much less things than my weekend one does. Because I am fortunate enough that I can store many necessities in the office.
Could you share something about the bottle opener/corkscrew you use? I actually chose to check in my pack more than once because i don't want to travel without my swiss army knife even though these are the only two functions i regularly use...

I admire the principle but I cant do it. Too many must haves to fit into 30L. Need a minimum of two pairs of shoes (sandals and walking shoes),craft projects, kindle, im allergic to most sunscreens so have to take a big bottle of mine, and i like to pick up gifts and souvenirs as I go along
The goal is the travel more easily - and for you it may be to travel with a checked luggage. Everyone travels differently, so if you have to check bags, then do it. It‘s also perfectly fine. Especially bringing larger amounts of a specific sunscreen would be a challenge with traveling carry-on only. You could try to refill it in smaller 100ml containers though, but that would still count towards your max limit for fluids. There is also the option to bring larger amounts of fluid medications if you have a medical certificate from a doctor, but I am not sure if your sunscreen would fall under that category and I never tried it myself. 🤔

I do! For me it‘s the perfect size and weight combination. The only thing I wish it had was a water bottle holder. :) A few companies are sending me a few larger travel bags to test, and I figured over the winter and since I am not flying anywhere, I could do that. But the bags will have a hard time competing against my Osprey. 😂
I travel with a 25L backpack only, but always struggle with the clothes, always think I'll need more and pack an extra shirt or shorts 🤦🏻♂️
I also always have the feeling that I pack a few clothes too much. But considering that you are already at a 25 liter backpack, I think you are doing an excellent job!!! 👍

For a guy trting to stay minimilist is a electric shaver too much
If you actually use it and you have the space, then I would say no. I also travel with my bulky epilator/razor when I go for longer periods of time. My husband loves his Philips OneBlade - maybe this would be a smaller option for you too. :)

I do but I can't seem to get my kids/sister to do the same, so I have to wait w/ them at the baggage carousel. Defeats the purpose! Plus, everyone seems to love hard-sided roller bags and I'm a backpack person.
I am also team backpack! :) Hahaha, I know the feeling! My husband also insisted for years that he needs a large luggage… 😂 But eventually, he came around. And so did my parents. Well, maybe me announcing that I will not help them to drag their heavy luggages through the remote beaches in Brazil helped… but since then, even they are excited carry-on only travelers. 😂
I managed to keep my luggage to carry on and 7 kilos (Jetstar requirement) when I visited my brother in Tasmania in July. It was tricky but knowing that I could borrow ordinary things from him or my sister-in-law or wash them reduced the list. I was channelling you as I thought about what to NOT take. Thank you
Carry-on only. Usually a 45-liter main backpack/shoulder bag and a 15-liter backpack, but my past two trips made me realize that my shoulders are trashed from thirty years of computer work. A 9-kilo bag on one shoulder is a bad idea, especially if you have to hustle to catch a train or walk forever around an airport. So I am trying a medium-sized two-wheel rollaboard and a bag for under the seat for the next trip.
I travel with a 28L backpack that fits within the personal item size and a tote as a personal item, though I am trying to challenge myself to decrease that to just the backpack and small sling/crossbody. Even though I tend to stay in a country for several weeks to over a month, I hop around different locations, so a backpack suits my needs.
I’ve actually gotten a lot of my packing tips from this channel (especially the laundry set-up).

All valuable things should never be stored outside your body+sight,
so a sling is not a bag but an extension of your pockets.
During the cold seasons we have enough inner pockets in our jackets.
Not so pro afterall.
