The Varia Suit is the default look for Samus in game covers and in Smash she is using the Varia Suit as her first skin.
As curious data, the name of the Varia Suit is translated wrong, it should be Barrier Suit, but it was badly translated and the fant loved the name, so it stayed that way.
Varia Suit sounds way cooler. "Barrier suit" sounds redundant. Like, a suit is already a barrier.

Huh, I've played this game dozens of times and never even caught on to that. I just knew bombs released Metroids' grip from basic knowledge osmosis from being on the Internet. That's really smart.
They did the same with the Beetoms in Super Metroid. They lock you in that room with 'em after defeating Kraid until you learn 😅

I remember the Zero Suit section was really stressful for me when I played the first time. I died about five times then.
Fun fact: On hard mode they remove one of the save rooms in that section.
@@BigHailFan I didn't know that hard mode did anything like that. I might want to try it out next time I play.
@@totalradlad hard mode does more than just numerical stuff. enemies are replaced with stronger variants, pick ups give you much less (like half an energy tank instead of a full one), and a number of other things.
@@totalradlad Hard Mode in Zero Mission doesn't fuck around. It might be the hardest mode in any Metroid game (Samus Returns Fusion Mode might be harder, but I can't confirm that on account of the lack of amiibo, fuck you Nintendo).
@@jacobmonks3722 I have the amiibo and can confirm that you will on average die to every Metroid fight at least once. I really is annoying that Fusion Mode is locked behind an amiibo, though. You can't get one for a reasonable amount of money after or even before it's released (unless it's an Animal Crossing one) and they're only making people mad.
Bonus Metroid deep lore from the manga: Those "trash bots" are Chozo training dummies. That's why they're practically indestructable. They were literally made to suffer and Samus spent much of her youth abusing a lot of them.
Hey Deebee, you may already know this by now, but in any Metroid game you can always substitute missile hits with charged beam shots in case you run out of missiles on bosses that require missiles to hit them
Charge beam is life. Anyone who mains Spammus in Smash Bros understands this power.
Except for the Metroids themselves -- in older games you could NOT damage them with beam shots, so if you ran out of missiles you could only freeze them and run.
It really doesnt matter too much though since most bosses are basically missile dispensers with their projectiles

@@joshwaterfield2483 Haha, I wouldn't call it out if I didn't also main Samus in Smash. But to OP's point, charge beam just helps conserve missiles throughout main games in general, 2D and Prime series.
Honestly it's really impressive you made it through a Metroid game first playthrough in less than 5 hours. I guess it shows how much of a completionist you are or not through how much you get sidetracked by backtracking for more expansions, but I feel you have a solid understanding of the mechanics now. Blow up everything, look for secrets, find the weakspot of a boss and spam all your missiles on it.
Great playthrough. Now you may have a greater appreciation of the movesets of Samus, Zero Suit Samus and Ridley in Super Smash Bros Ultimate since you just crushed through a proper 2-D Metroid experience. If you power through at this speed, you may very well be able to knock out the four 2-D Metroids just in time for Metroid Dread on Switch.

I don’t think he really can appreciate zero suit samus’s moveset more than how her neutral be is the paralyser gun, everything else is made up and she has high heels for no reason

I know what a completionist is because I am one typically in games that have collectibles, be it Mario, Donkey Kong, Metroid, etc. You don't have to get exactly 100% to have the mentality as you play through any game though. Whether you decide to just move on and finish a game will eventually happen. On my recent playthrough of Super Metroid, I decided, good enough, and wanted to finish and ended up over 90% complete. I didn't hit 100%, but having a completionist mindstate as I played made my playthrough a lot longer than it could have been had I just powered through, as I did quite a few hours just backtracking for items I saw I missed on the map after upgrades.

For more lore I recommend the Metroid manga, which serves as a prequel to the franchise.

As to some of the questions, the purple suit is called the Gravity Suit, the bird people are the Chozo, and yes they raised an orphaned Samus and are the ones who created her Power Suit.

Aye not happening in Super metroid. Charge Beam shots are also effective on most things that your regular beam won't hurt but missiles will, like bosses but not metroids, red missle doors, the Zebetites blocking your path in mother brain's room and mother brains case. Next game IMO should be Samus Returns for the 3DS.
Wow you can really tell how similar the zero suit section in this game to the EMMIs in Dread. If anything this can serve as good practice for when the game comes out.
Samus vs SA-X, similar situiation.
@@Gramini The Pirate Mothership infiltration felt like an evolution of the SA-X. Instead of a few scripted rooms it is a whole big area, with a big emphasis on stealth and multiple pursuers to avoid. There's a clear evolution from the SA-X events to the Mothership and Chozodia stealth/chase sequences to the EMMI zones. No wonder they had the idea for Metroid Dread kicking around since at least 2005. They just needed technology to catch up, as the EMMI are much smarter than the SA-X and pirates, and needed much smarter and natural AI to become the dreadful threats they are.

I feel the Prime experience will be amazing stream content for this channel, but part of me wants him to hold out for next year in anticipation of a Prime Trilogy launch on Switch in advance of Metroid Prime 4. I think we all want MP Trilogy for ourselves as well. I think crushing out the 2D Metroids may be smart marketing and timing for him with Dread around the corner.
honestly Nintendo should of been cone out with prime trio on switch. esp if they can replicate the sword in Zelda, Shooting arm for Samus should be much more responsive.
I mean, if they put them out again in HD... I guess I'll be buying that trilogy for the third time 🤷♂️

So ive never been a metroid guy but found this insanely interesting.
Also, the pacing in this game is kind of amazing?
You start of weak but against weak enemies, continously power up to the point of being a little op, then in the mother brain section you suddenly feel weaker again because you cant really stop the assault around you, you beat mb, escape get stripped of ALL your power and put against very poweful enemies but get rewarded with the ultimate OP upgrade.
and all that in a playtime of like 4 hours.
The excitement in your voice just makes me happy. I'm glad you're loving a game that I loved, thought I grew up playing the original in the late 80s... This remake is such a lovingly made remake!

This was so much fun to watch you play through. I never got to play Zero Mission, but when you unlocked the original NES Metroid and opened it up I had instant nostalgia. I used to sit down and watch my grandpa play that game when I was a little kid, and after he beat it he let me have a turn to play too. I never got even close to the end but he would encourage me to try different weapons and areas even though I was always lost. It was such a fun game to play, and seeing the old version on screen here brought back a flood of happy memories for me, so thanks for including that part.
I can't wait for next Monday to see you play the next part of Metroid 2 Samus Returns. It sucks because I have to go to work from 10am Pacific Time till 10pm, so I usually have to watch your streams after they went live in the night time.

if you want to know who these bird people are then i suggest reading the official Manga, it tells Samus back story and her relationship with Ridley, Mother Brain and the Space Pirates
Fun fact: Ridley is named after movie director Ridley Scott, who directed the movie Alien from which this game takes major inspiration. Also when Alien first came out, moviegoers expected that the main character would be Tom Skeritt's character Dallas. The movie instead cleverly passes this mantle onto the Ellen Ripley character (Sigourney Weaver), in a clever subversion of expectations. And that inspired the reveal of Samus being a woman instead of a man, if you beat the original NES game in under 3 hours. The instruction booklet's written story even blatantly refers to Samus as he/him/his.
So the TL;DR of this is: Ridley is an homage to director Ridley Scott and Samus is a tribute to Sigourney Weaver's character Ripley.
Ridley also looked Xenomorph-like on NES concept arts.

I didn't realise how much I would actually enjoy watching somebody discover these games. Something oddly satisfying about watching somebody have that "Eureka!" Moment when they figure out what to do, or how to get creative.

This was by far one of the most enjoyable playthroughs I think I've ever seen. This is one of the few Metroid games I haven't played yet and I was genuinely on the edge of my seat during the zero suit section and my heart was pounding just watching. This was the closest I'll ever come to seeing a legit Metroid movie lol. Cheers mate! Welcome to the Metroid club.
Truth be told: the Mother Brain fight in this game is though as hell. Even knowing what to do.
After that is brand new content in the game, and it was just perfect! the fact that you can play defenseless as Zero suit in a run & hide game, then recover your full powered suit and beath the living crap out of the rest of the game. The entire mural sequence is just ... wow! Proving that you don't need to rely on text and dialoges to tell a good story, and Metroid is just that game.
This is one of my favorite games of all times! you should also play Metroid Prime, you're gonna love it. Is a FPS adventure that really translates the Metroid formula on a 3D enviroment.
Seeing how you're getting about these stealth/escape sequences makes me very excited to see your reaction whenever you get to Dread... Also unrelatedly hope you'll play AM2R some day...
As someone who just played the 4 main Metroids, i'm happy to see that you're doing it too.
One of the biggest things about the Metroid series is that there is no consensus on what the "best" game is. Every fan has their favourite, they're all so good and so distinct. My personal favourite is Fusion and I hope to see you play it eventually. It's that good.

Metroid is the apotheosis of teaching gameplay mechanics through giving you a cool toy and saying "Have fun". I adore this franchise.
something interesting about MOST METROID GAMES is that the least ammount of time you spend to finish it, and the more the items you collect, the more different pictures you get, in ZERO MISSION there is a picture gallery: These pictures have Samus in different poses and different ammounts of armor and if you connected this game to METROID FUSION game (using cartridges and two gameboy advace consoles and a cable link) you could get the picture gallery of METROID FUSION.

That was so fun seeing someone play a Metroid game from the mindset of a beginner. I was actually able to see your journey from someone who had no idea what he was doing to a wall bombing expert.
When i fought with Mother Brain the first time, i raged so hard that i threw my Phone against the wall in my room(I played it with an Emulator on my Phone btw) but the Phone didnt even have a scratch or somthing.

Love the touch with giving a voice to the robot on the Space Pirate Mothership, also i didn't know you could beat the main story without acquiring the Power Bomb. Thought it was needed before you could even face Mother Brain.

her suit is called the "Varia Suit" Of course there are many iterations of this so not all are Varia but something similar is usually based on that.

PLEASEEE keep doin more of these series, it was amazing to watch you play and enjoy so much the game, its on of my favorite games of all time and you did very well for your first metroid, i think you really got the core game essence and knew how to surf it incredibly.
I recommend you playing all the games in order they came out, maybe excepting the first 2 wich you can play the remake versions, but still they are amazing if you want to try them.
You definitely make the best choice in starting with Zero Mission, this experience as a kid is what made me a Metroid fan. Hope you enjoy all the series as you did with this game.

Some of the ways to get things are INSANE, but once you know how, its useful in so many other places. Especially Samus Returns, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion. Keep at it!

Started here with your Halo journey, and it's been so much fun to see you play Metroid now!!!! Metroid is my favorite game series besides Halo, and I'm so hyped to see you experience these amazing games!! The atmosphere, the music, the puzzles, the lore, the abilities, the worlds: everything Metroid is so unique and perfectly put together! There's really nothing else like it!

I love the stealth segments in metroid games, especially the one in zero mission because its not like in other games were beng spotted leads to a cutscene of you being thrown out and forced to start over (looking at you N64 Zelda games). Instead you have to make the enemies lose sight of you while they're chasing you. It makes it actually nerve wracking instead of just frustrating and tedious. Also the payoff of getting the fully upgraded Gravity suit and going back for revenge just feels so perfect. You can tell how much love and care went into creating Zero Mission. They could have just ported the original Metroid to the GBA, but instead the gave it the works. More intuitive goals and secrets, tight controls (no NES jank here), and a totally redone Ridley fight now that he's been established as more than just another mid boss. A giant screaming monster dragon is much more intimidating than the Barney from the original. Not to mention the entire newly added segment that the game gets its name from. The 16bit/32bit art style also fits metroid's aesthetics. Zero Mission is what made me love Metroidvanias so much.
Kraid is also redone
So someone probably already told you this, but the bird people young Samus was seen with are known as the Chozo. They raised Samus after Ridley killed her parents.

You're gonna love Metroid Fusion and esp Samus Returns. Boss fight at the end is so satisfying and challenging. Actually the last few were plenty challenging...aside from the mid bosses...
Long story short, Samus is the one and only survivor of a planet Ridley destroyed and the bird people took her in, so the grafitti/drawing was from her as a child from way back.

That was crazy, that final part is just a rush of adrenaline and you handle it really good!

As someone who already beat all the metroid games several times, its very enjoyable watching someone discovering secrets and overcoming challenges in their first playthrough. Job well done! Ill go watch Samus returns now.
You can use the screw attack to destroy those red doughnuts 🍩 in Tourian. That will make it eat easier next time.
When you're shooting Mother Brain, try to jump between a little platform and the other (with Screw Attack) and shoot missiles against it, that'll make you less vulnerable.

Heh, the whole zero suit section is kind of a meta joke. I'm sure you've been told of this already, but the Morph Ball only exist in the first place because, in the NES original METROID game, they couldn't get a crawling animation to work properly.
So, of course, in the remake of the first game, they have a section where you crawl around :P
