    As a DIYr and avid Christmas light decorator, that ladder tool wedge just went to the top of my list. I have 2 roof lines where every year I think they are going to find me come spring on the ground. I cannot wait to securely stand up another ladder on the roof to get to the peak over the front door.

    Hi Chris, Thanks for sharing with us all. The ladder gutter guard is a great tool. I picked it up from your site a few years ago and use it when ever the ladder is in use with the gutters. The only problem the scratch resistant material needed to be reglued no biggie.

    I know this hack doesn't necessarily sell any tools from your store, but I found it to be a nearly infallible asset for working on roofs, even super steep ones. Get an old couch cushion, and pull the foam core out. The foam grips asphalt shingles like a mountain goat, and then you just stand on the cushion (which should also grip your shoes). I've been able to get work done on 12-12 pitch roofs without struggling to maintain my grip. Also, on hot days, when asphalt shingles could take a beating from having people walk up and down them, the cushion helps prevent too much loss of the aggregate from the shakes.
    Another tip is to use the Pivit Tool to sit or stand (anchored safely in the rungs of a ladder sitting on the roof as you demonstrated) to prevent fatigue in your feet and ankles if you have to be doing a lot of prep on a roof pitch (like scraping and sanding on a dormer). This keeps your ankles and feet in a more natural anatomical position.
    I wasn't that impressed with the gutter guard. I always just put a ladder stabilizer (like you would use to set your ladder in front of a window, with a little framework that puts the resting points on either side of the window), and when you lean the ladder up against the house, with the stabilizer legs just over the gutter on the roof, the ladder is prevented from touching the gutter at all. Never had a single problem.
    Lastly, I always just used "roof jacks" that roofers might use to anchor into a steep roof and rest my ladder runner in it. $11 each, probably cheaper than the Pivit branded roof anchor (though I say that without checking your store or what roof jacks are going for at MBS ;) lately, so caveat emptor on that). I've even had a customer pay me to leave them mounted on his roof so he could safely climb up to knock the snow off his satellite dish.

    Didnt know about those ladder anchors!!! Another great idea by pivot ! Thanks for the video. Also a pair of old foam couch cushions will keep you on a pretty steep pitch if it’s something quick ! just the foam! Take them out the covers

    I always used Sonneborne NP-1 one part Urethane. It comes in about twelve different colors and matches most bricks and or shingles. This is what you use to caulk aluminium frame windows permanently in place on a commercial buildings and expansion joints with ethafoam backing Sonneborne also makes NP-2 a two-part version of this that comes in a 2 gallon bucket a 4-oz activator and they also have different tints you can add to it to make a color that you want. Both of these products are permanent you never have to do anything to them you can paint them but they are solvent-based you have to clean off your tools (fingers) with something like Napthia. I really like the tools that you show in the video I used to have a chunk of wood that was the width of a gutter. I would climb up and drop it in the gutter with one ladder below the soffit and then another letter would go on the gutter, but the tool you
    show is much more convenient. I like that you can drop it in blind from the ground with a pole that's smart call. The other tool you show attaching to the roof underneath the shingle tab is great also. I had a 2×4 about 2' ft long with those wavey galvanized metal tie strips brick masons use screwed to my 2×4. I slipped the tie strips up under the shingle and screwed them down like you did with a drill. I should have patented my 2×4 tool. Years before they had reversible fine finish tips probably 20 years before they only had flat fine finish tips. These were about 1/2" in depth. They were 2 flat tips stacked, the first tip was a round conical shape spray pattern and the 2nd flat tip was a regular flat spray pattern. The paint went through each, was busted up twice and came out like a vapor just like the reversible fine finish tips today except whenever they got stopped up you had to take them apart and clean them which is a real pain in the ass and usually if you do get a piece of trash in your line you end up with two three pieces until it clears which meant you had to disassemble it three or four times in a row then for your gun start spraying again. You had to be extremely careful that you had everything is clean as possible otherwise the tips were useless. I got the idea of a reversible fine finish tip and drew in exact model of the Graco the green reversible fine finish tip I said to the paint store manager I had an idea for this and showed her the tip I had drawn a picture of. Christine said I should patent it. About 5 years later I went to the paint store one day and there they were hanging on the wall somebody else patented my idea. I had tried to patent something once before, spent $700 for a patent search from a patent attorney and was told my idea was patented.
    I've never seen one still except for the one I made. I got cold feet about my reversible tip because I had spent all that money for nothing and I regret to this day I didn't patent my reversible fine finish tip. If I had that I would be sitting back right now rolling in dough. I'm disabled broke as a convict because I receive zero disability and probably never will. They have to keep my disability so they can give it to all the illegal aliens over here!! Another great video!! Your videos are always great, makes me wish I was working again. I really miss working, but I fell from a 24-foot ladder and broke my back and 4 places which ended my paint career after more than 30 years. I first started painting when I was a young boy helping my Grandad in 1972 and did it professionally since 1980. I did a lot more than just paint. I would go to a house do all the repairs inside or out and then paint it. another great video, but then your videos are always great. I've never seen one that I didn't like.
    God Bless Y'all

      NP-1 is fantastic stuff. I learned the trick to easy working with it from another painter. Run your bead of NP-1, then get a bottle of dish soap and squirt a generous amount right on top of your NP-1, the entire length of the bead, then "strike" your caulk with your finger or tool. Works nearly perfect, and actually results in a much nicer looking bead than if you weren't using soap.

    Try "Couger paws" boots, a roofing crew told us about them and we bought a pair, they have these grippy pads on the bottom and you don't slide on the roof, it's incredible! They work for roofs as steep as the one in this video safely, any steeper and I would probably do these anchors, but most roofs are never steeper than this one. Also, you can use the foam from inside old couch cushions to sit on steep roofs and you wont slide either, roofers use them all the time.

  • @davidanastacio8928
    @davidanastacio8928 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A technique I was taught from a long time roofer is the use of foam. It takes some practice to feel comfortable to feel safe, but in short time you will learn to trust them. First, pick a piece of foam that is fairly firm. Soft foam will not work well. You will want a piece at least 3' square. I use foam off a couch that some one is going to throw out. Make sure everything stuck to the foam and peeled off until you are left with a clean piece. This is important. Now this is the most important part. When using on a steep roof, NEVER make your first step onto the areas of the foam below the very top edge. If you stand below that point the foam will curl up and roll off. This top edge area is a good place to sit also. Using multiple cushion, you can place a ladder on the top edges to safely hold a ladder. Just make sure to distribute your weigh evenly, until the foam is evenly compressed. If you want to climb up a steep roof to get to a safe area or to the ridge, you can use two cushions and grip the cushions at the top ege middle area and lay your fore arm on the middle are and this will allow you, pressing from the hand gripped area to where you press your fore arm down, to go one arm after the other in a climbing motion with your feet below each arm in a comfortable climbing motion. Once to the top, you can rest by sitting on the top edge of the foam with one leg curled up underneath your buttocks and the other leg extended underneath you so that the tread of you shoe is flat and toe facing downward. Using this same position, you can safely decend down the roof by lifting the bottom edge until you begin to slide. The further up you lift that edge the faster you will travel down the roof pitch. Drop the front edge down slows your decent. All the way down to stop.Being a roofer myself, I have use cushions to climb 12/12 comp roof and place my material on the top edge to hold it. I also use this technique to install christmas light to the ridge and gable ends quickly and safely. Things to remind yourself. Always use the top edge of the cushions, make sure the foam is fairly dense and thick. Couch cushions are a great thickness. Once done, do not store cushions out in the sun. This will break down the foam and create a brittle surface that will break away under your weigh and send you sliding. Always put pressure to the top edge and weight it to check how it adheres to the surface before using them to climb. I found that they do not hold well on slate roofs. DO NOT climb up sleep roofs with only one cushion. Two is the minimum. WHEN LEARNING THIS TECHNIQUE, CLOSELY check the condition of the roof. If the composition roof is so delapitated that the entire surface has loose aggrigate, then this will need to be blown away first. If the condition is that bad, the shingles may be feady to slide away from there nailing. So use common sense before trying your luck. Go slow and work safely. If you have any doubt rope yourself in to a safety harness. Good luck to all that try this method I've shared with you. Once you have mastered this technique, you will work much faster and safer than the competition. Save time, makes more money and always remember to not cut quality. That will separate you from your competition and gain you repeat business.Learn how to do the job perfect and when doing so becomes second nature your speed will come. Short cuts have risk, screws over the customer for a quality job they hoped to be paying for and you can live another day to make money again. People will pay more once convinced that they are receiving that top of the line craftsmanship. If you are capable, give it to them. Who likes going back to fix work that should have been done right the first time. My motto, safer, better faster. In that order.

    I like a ladder standoff from a ladder company better than the pivot idea. It doesn't touch the gutter and it rest on the roof itself rather than the gutter. If you get one with a quick disconnect you can use the ladder with or without the ladder standoff in a matter of seconds. The only thing I don't like about the disconnect is that the cotter pin that holds it in place sometimes pokes me in the chest. I do like the pivot ladder hold on the roof. Another item that might be useful for a painter working on roofs a lot would be a pair of cougar paw boots. They have special pads that attach to the bottom of the boots that are replaceable. They also have boot protectors available for walking on the ground. Another alternative is to wear flat lifting shoes from one of the sport shoe companies like Addidas. Ithink that is how you spell it.

    After you have pulled the shingle tab up, use the ladder boot and uninstall it, you'd want to apply a dab of shingle cement to secure the tab down. Black Jack waterproofer cement from a caulking gun or tube works pretty well. Don't leave loose, unsecured tabs.

    Ok snort question ive got a short roof over a garage and second story roof i need to paint the peak on thats about 3 storys off a sloped driveway down hill at 35dgr If I try to use an extension ladder to reach it I cant the short roof is too long I cant place a ladder in a safe position. So I need to set the ladder on the short roof. I can use my 16' little giant or an 8' a frame ladder i dont think the 8' is tall enough i need to scrap off bad pelling paint and sand then seal the wood becuse that part of my house always starts pelling and chipping I was thinking of putting a wood stabilizer that petrfires wood on bare wood. Ill later have to change the lap siding.
    The roof is a 3ply high definition shingle and its not very old the gutters are new.
    Just finished them yesterday.
    Didn't they used to make hooks to hold a 2x4 or 2x6 you could use to foot a ladder on so it wouldn't slide off a roof?
    Doh. Watch the whole thing questions answered. Thanks.
    But you know a lifts also not a bad idea,
    Paint trim and rent the lift for a week and replace the siding all in one. Might make it worth it. My next door negibor works for a rental company that rents these tools and he might also want to use it also. He could bring it home for a weekend.

    • @sonoferin54
      @sonoferin54 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that stabilizer was invented years ago to paint windows and was a standoff I dont think I would trust it to hold a ladder on the roof the way you are saying.
      Also I've been painting for 45 years we have mostly used a ladder on the angle of the roof so ladder lays flat. Pegged at the bottom or "footed" Then that ladder was accessed by putting a ladder right next to the angled ladder on the roof and step onto it from this ladder before getting onto the roof. Never failed us.

      I always use a soft tennis shoe with a firm edge and leather uppers, preferably in a hightop. This way they will last longer. Composition shingles are just like sand paper and will wear out fabric tops in a day sometimes.Never walk in the center of tile roofs. Bottom edge only sideways horizontal and walk in a rolling motion. Don't press with all your weight from step to step. Stay away from cut pieces, ridge that has been mortored and away from plumbing pipes and heater vents that come out of the roofing. Also tile pieces that run up along the walls of dormers. These have metal underneath that stands up to catch and carry water downward. This raise metal edge creates a pressure point that when stepped on will crack your tile. If you definitely want to create an instant enemy for life, climb up his freshly laid valley area and brake his cut pieces of tile. Stay away, especially if you are a heavy set person. When I hear the crack crunch sound of someone carrying a chimney top or other materials they plan to install, they hear me at the top of my voice yell STOP!. At that point, depending on their ability to do so correctly and without giving me any attitude, this will help me decide the level of pain to deliver. Stop, be nice. Let me carry whatever your trying to install for you and most likely I will install this item for you and let me talk you off of my roof and I won't have to kill you. (kidding) but I will give you so much shit you will wish you were dead.

But better then a flat head, or phillips becuse you always get a positive grip on the screw and dont strips out a Phillips screw if you don't get a good positive grip. These are a great advantage over Phillips screws as Phillips were over flat screws were, your also starting to see a reverse style bolt that has more points then 6 sides. First thing I noticed is that your ladder is set far too steeply against the gutter. It should be 1 foot out for every 4 feet high.
    There's a risk of slipping on a steep roof while getting that thing installed. A proper roof ladder can be set up in half the time you spent fixing it under the shingles. I used to borrow one that had a pair of wheels fitted to allow it to be pushed up to the peak of my steep roof from the ground. It then was flipped over so that the hooks engaged on the far side. Took about a minute to install and there was no risk of damage to the roof.

    Anyone have any ideas for metal roofs. Painting will not be a problem but I am trying to come up with a safe system for when the roof is wet. I plan on power washing every other year. A lift is out of the question due to trees.

      I have a metal roof with many fiir trees around. I am moving soon, but I'd remove it iI were staying. I always wait until it's dry and just blow it off. Wet metal roof is a death trap. There some good extension tools for pressure washers and if you are clever you can use a caster to run it from a far. I did the breezeway to my shop roof with just the extension (10 ft reach). Any further and I would have used the caster.

    A ladder standoff is much safer than that cheap plastic gutter protector and a ridge hook on a section of ladder wont require drilling into a roof.

      Yes, I would ~highly~ recommend the level tool. I painted for 18 years in the same 2 towns that Chris makes most of his videos in, and it's a very versatile tool. The other two tools he mentions seem a bit gimmicky, but the level tool is great.

    What if you have cement tile roofs?

    • @bobbg9041
      @bobbg9041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rent a lift, you really do not want to walk on clay roof tiles or metal roofs, thoses cost a ton of money and are made to last a lifetime you do not want to dammage any of it. The cost to fix will be more then the cost to rent a lift. And you might not be able to match the color. Most of that type of roof is made to last the life of the house. Wood shake tiles same thing.
      They last 50 years and cost a bloody fortune to replace. Stay off them.
      Chances are anyone of those roofs are 25 to 50 years old the manfacturing company might not be around anymore.
      Not worth the risk.

  • @michaelvenezia2633
    @michaelvenezia2633 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    These tools are wonderful, but the roof boot wouldn't work in my area, since most roofs out here are clay tile ,or hurricane shake roofs. When I go up on a pitched roof, I'm using a body harness, ropes and safety arrestors that stop your fall automatically if you lose your grip on the arrestor. For a rope system to work, it means that I have to drill an eyebolt for top attachment into a roof beam. Once you've roped off correctly you can't fall, whereas even with your roof shoe you can still take the plunge, and even a fall from 9 feet or more can mean serious injuries.

    You can't lift up shingles that are sealed properly. Ladder stabilizer , stays of the gutter.

  • @roofsmartpads
    @roofsmartpads 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    question; How do you accomplish this on roofs with terra cotta, metal, shake, slate, or other more fragile surfaces? Does having the ladder on the asphalt cause scarring?
    You may want to look at the RoofSmart Pad. This pad also has a ladder brace attachment to prevent gutter damage but it also grips the roof, even on steep pitches, and it evenly distributes your weight preventing any damage to the roof while you walk on it. www.roofsmartpad.com See what you think.

      @jaymiddleton4663 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time its not useable on a roof repair cus youd need 50 ladders to access each individual cracked tile. Not worth it. Better off walking easy and going along each on like normally

    • @C4sp3r123
      @C4sp3r123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      O@@jaymiddleton4663 That's not my experience, no need for 50 ladders just 2. one set of usually telescopic ladders to get up to the roof line and another ladder with the roof ridge attachment on it to place o the actual roof. Once the ladders are hooked over the ridge it is easy to reposition them, either straddle the ridge so you are sitting on the ridge with a leg each side than you can easily roll the ladder away from you effectively flipping it over and that moves it along the ridge or you can just lift and move it forward along the ridge.
      But when painting like in the video you shouldn't have a need to reposition much and it would be imo easier than the solution in the video though a roof ridge attachment may not always be possible to use so Chris's option may have to be used.
      Not sure where your cracked tiles reference fits in with the video, also you said in your previous comment the tiles break too easily by just walking on them but then in your follow up comment said you are better off walking easy and going along each one, rather contradicting yourself. Maybe I am not understanding what you are talking about.

      Yeah, I'm a home inspector. A client/friend asked me my thoughts on their painter doing this to their roof for a project starting in the spring. I told them to tell the painter to rent a lift or use ridgehooks. Just because a product exists doesn't mean it's a good idea to use it. That screw at 6:25 is in a terrible location. Saving a few hundred bucks to end up with a roof leak is being penny wise and pound foolish. I'd be flat out LIVID if I caught a painter doing this to my roof.

    Seems like a lot of extra time and work. This is not a new invention. They have what they call a "roofing jack" or a "ladder jack" and they are much easier to install than this fancy, probably over priced gadget. Still that method requires a lot more time and equipment when you could just use a couch cushion foam or a roofers wedge.

    How much they paying you for this 1, I'd never screw anything into a customer's roof like that. Go get a plank 10 or 12 in wide 2 in thick fits right on your ext ladder.Your not gonna be in that spot long enuff to go through all that. Plus if it was my roof I'd prob have a cow. A plank costs 12 bucks. O and your guys got white paint on the shingles🤗. The last part about the paint I'm just busting your chops. But serious about just using a plank. 1 more thing stuff like that don't work well on tile roofs. 25 or so yrs ago a cop gave us some ladder mates sorta same as your boot , well they slide on tile. I fell 2 stories that day, 8 stitches in my chin and a deuce of paint over my head🤣. I don't use gadgets. I'm very biased since then.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
