From personal experience I would add four more pieces of advice: 1. Always have the client move their furniture. One client accused me of damaging a display-cabinet's contents and I never ever moved another piece of furniture for any client again. If they don't like that, you don't need that job. 2. Have the client buy and deliver the paint. There can be no discussion about "That's not the color I wanted." 3. Video every square foot of the job before and after so there can never be any discussion about the job quality. 4. Always and I mean always get the job-description and particulars in writing, signed and dated by the client. Absolutely get any change-orders written, signed and dated. Believe me, some clients have bad memories but some actually are out to screw any and all contractors. They think you charge too much so they want something for free. My last big client was dealing with dozens of properties and in his old-age couldn't remember what he told me day to day. He was a good guy but he was failing mentally. Having everything in writing saved me a lot of arguing. Painting, as presented in this presentation is a simple and pleasant occupation. Preparation is absolute key and taking your time is equally important. Never rush.
I think the video gives a good idea for a DIY paint job and your tips are great for those who will be painting for others. Always important to protect your own butt.

You're my go-to guy on anything about painting. I have watched many videos over many years. And I've learned quite a bit. But, I always patch walls before I do anything else. That way it's dry and ready when everything else is done and the room is ready for painting. Also, I don't allow anyone to open a can of paint before they have a clean, wet, white rag. That way if there are any mishaps, Then you have a wet rag in a second. So as to not allow any spills, drips, or anything to have time to start drying. Also, I always wet my brushes then slap out the excess water. This way they clean up easier. Keep up the great videos I study them a lot.
Great overview of interior painting! I started watching all of your videos a few months ago and I'm now painting almost as good as a pro! My house is about halfway done (started in the finished basement) and prep time always takes the longest. Since I'm also painting the ceilings (same color), removing everything from the room is mandatory so adds a lot ot prep time but definitely worth the trouble. Using the 4" roller for cutting the corners is SO smart and also looks great. Keep up the great channel....and don't forget to put in God's Word! 1 Peter 3:15
You're painting the ceiling the same color? That's ok, but maybe I can provide some info why that's not typically done. There's psychoacoustics, and there's another field known as psychovisuals. The idea is to work with your human brain, and how it perceives color and distance/depth, and not against it. The reason ceilings are typically painted white is that it "lifts the ceiling." The diffracted light makes it hard to notice where excactly the ceiling begins, so essentially you don't notice the exact height your ceiling is at. And for most people and our modest homes and rooms, ceilings are pretty darn low. Painting the ceiling a darker color than white or an off white makes the ceiling appear low and ominous. You'll tend to notice there's a "big cover" just above you. Noticing the exact height of your ceiling adds a feeling of claustrophobia. Rooms start to look like tunnels and caves. Most don't like this. In a few rooms it can be great for a change of pace (kids' play rooms or spare room to watch tv/play video games) , but not for your entire house. If your ceiling height is extremely tall, then you will want to consider the reverse techniques. Use a darker color, or perhaps install darkened beams (typically wood) to "bring the ceiling down." It makes rooms with huge vaulted ceilings or ceilings above 12 feet in height a touch cozier. Hope that helps. :)
I know this video has been around for awhile but I wanted to share a great 5-in-1 tool tip. When cleaning up your paint rollers, use the curved part of the tool! It will make it much easier to squeeze out almost every drop of paint from the roller.

Also they don't use ladders because for higher ceiling ladder may not be able to reach, like pent House or 2 storey bungalow. They use up to 4 x elongated aluminium pole, and you don't rolled and cut in. This is a mistake most professionals do. You cut in first then roll as the thickness of paint on roller and brush is different. After rolling then cut, you might see the lines of the brush.

Confusing but interesting to see how other do their thing. If it works for you then great but I’ll stick to cutting in, roll, cut in, roll.
Hey GENIUS DECORATOR....try watching and LISTENING to the VIDEO. They do a LIGHT SKIM COAT FIRST then cut in HEAVY. Then a second coat THEN THEY GO BACK AT THE END AND CUT IN AGAIN WHEN NECESSARY. See 9:00,
I do the same in the video. Reason being 1. cutting in once usually equates to rolling twice, as in regarding paint coverage. 2. It saves time doing this method and then touching up in needed areas afterwards.

Iv been a painter decorator 44 years now, most of my customers like a good job done with the quotes written, all including materials... Costs way it depends on the square footage of there home 🏡 1-2 bedroom units are basic quotes, colors are also discussed and feature walls if mentioned by customers... 3-4 bedroom quotes are past over to customers listing ceilings, walls, doors and trim. Some customers ask for a 1 coat of primer, left for 24 hrs drying. Then 2 coat,s of chosen colors each at 2 hr drying periods... Feature wall are extra time Such as metallic rolled an diamond cross brushing on second coat finish. Costs very as well and depends on how far the customer,s spendeture goes. Large 5-6 bedroom with 2 bathroom size home, well that's more material,s and time put in the planning of prep and painting ceilings and walls with trim and doors throughout... 14 doors and frames with trim are quoted separately $175 triple coating, per door and frames that's 1 good prime and 2 top coats. There is lot of preparation work such as removing the doors and sprayed separately outside the house in beautiful weather conditions... Prep and painting a house is an art, interior and exterior gives the customer a satisfaction knowing that he or she paid for a good job and bumping up there value on the home also... Better for health and comfort 😌. $8500 should cover materials as well for a standard 3-4 bedroom house... 2 bedroom units are around $5-6000 dollars. 5-6 bedroom home,s with extra bathroom,s quotes are around $13.500. Depends also on the condition of that person's home with the day to day elements... Surface washed should be included with the complete costs, your guarantee is in quality of the brand of paint and material,s... You want the best work you pay for the best painters 🎨 Signed stv 44 year painter and decorator...

Great process video, thanks! Need advice for OLD SMOKE ODOR LEAKING THROUGH 1.5 YR OLD PAINT JOB - We bought a duplex 2 years ago and live in one side. Got the interior painted before moving in, and after 1.5 years during a very humid fall the place is getting worse week by week and we are both noticing health effects from third hand smoke. The air purifier's filter is even getting blackened from it, and the walls and clothes hanging in closets smell like cigarettes. We're looking at repainting the whole interior ourselves but *really* want to make sure we're doing it right. What products to use? The first job was bargain basement and he used crappy primer, crappy ceiling paint, and decent wall enamel. Will Kilz water based primer be enough, or are there other odor sealing layers necessary? Thanks for everything, your channel is now my go-to for painting!
I've been a painter for the last 45 years. There are many ways to do many things but there are tried and true reasons for painting things in the RIGHT order. Fill before you start. 1.Cut in ceilings, cornice and light fittings first. Come down the wall with the ceiling paint about 2-3". You can roll the ceiling then or later. Usually ceilings are rolled before walls, but the cutting in MUST be done first before going anywhere near the walls. The reason you come down the wall 2-3" is so when you roll there is enough room for the roller to completely cover without hitting the ceiling. 2. Cut in walls. You cut in FIRST because you will leave brush marks if you do it last AND the paint will be setting while you are still cutting in, on a cold day you will get away with it but not on a warm one.You will make a mess of your work otherwise.
Don’t cut in afterwards for touch ups . Cut in twice (both coats)otherwise you will get obvious flashing around light switches corners ect. Your having to cut in twice anyway so your not saving time just lowering the quality of the Finnish
I don’t know how he gets away with that. Maybe because in his part of the country all walls are textured. Here in the east coast everything is smooth plaster. That never works. Cut in both first and second coat.
You just busted an old myth that you have to do the cut ins first and foremost. Now I know I’m doing it right after all. Much appreciated, and thank you for all your advice.
The Cu,R,T method is always best. This guy knows how to paint, except that he rolls then Cuts, then, if needed, he trims. Cu-Cut in all of your borders. R-Roll in the body of your paint. T-Lastly, Trim in any wooden borders, such as Quarter-round, shoemold, and baseboards. That is the CORRECT way to paint. I've been painting off and on for 16 years. You never, and I mean never roll, then cut around the edges! Cut, Roll, and Trim! It's that simple!
Hello from Canada! I love watching your tips and tricks! I have a question! The previous owners of our house had wall decals and stickers on some of the walls in our new house. Unfortunately when they moved they peeled off the decals and stickers and left behind a mess, some peeling off paint and the top layer of drywall, while others left behind the whole back of the sticker and all the sticky residue. I have purchased a product to help break down this sticky residue, and a lot of elbows grease later the walls look, well Okay-ish 🙄. So here is my question....what can I use to wash away this oily mess the crud cutter product left behind before I paint?
It’s nice if you have reasonable customers who allow you to keep the room clear. I’ve had customers who want all of there stuff back in the room every time you leave. When you have a room that needs a lot of prep and is going to take a few days it is a nightmare.
This was great and simple to watch. Learned about cut ins and numbers of coatings which will help me finish my room. This is going to save me a bunch of money of having to hire a professional painter
I used to be a painter back in the day and we always did cut in, roll, cut in, roll finish coat. I`m sure this works also but that`s still how I do it.

yes.. a jay ceilings first 2 coats then walls always cut in both coats . caulk will craze as you say.. due to certain things taken out of paints these days, health n safety . a coat of zinsser over the top sorts it out though
Saji Vs he’s not criticising he’s right, never roll then cut. Always cut then roll because if you roll then cut you will see the streaks of your brush quite obvious. You don’t won’t that
I don't know where to buy caulk, I went to hardware store and the people just laughed at me when I asked if I can see their caulks
I always tape over the power outlets after removing the covers first. Thanks for your tutorial brother.

Thanks Chris..thanks for sharing your expertise..especially loved seeing the reference to Bible verse Philippians 4:8 at around 5 min 40 sec into video!
More tips: to avoid flashing 1) use flat paint 2) cut first 3) paint top to bottom without overlapping. Thanks for sharing!
Cut first is worse! Wall -cut-wall-cut!!!
i was wondering the same thing.. why not cut in first... maybe its a preference thing?
If you cut in first then roll your walls, you will roll over the brush marks from the cutting in an have a nicer finish around the edges.
@@davex2614 Nicee bro! exactly that.
@@davex2614this guy rolls his cut with a four inch after his his brush work so he doesn't get brush marks. Don't know about the one coat thing though. Didn't see him cut twice
Thanks for keeping it real Chris! Great paint tips.
OMG I love your videos you've made my DIY life so much easier. Saved me a ton of money! Keep the tips coming
Awesome! Thank you!
At 5:43 Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 KJV
The fact that you posted philippians 4:8 was so incredible 😍 👏
Great video. Thanks for really quick run down on how to paint and the tools and preparation needed. 18 inch roller is the key to do it fast
Thanks
Also they don't use ladders because for higher ceiling ladder may not be able to reach, like pent House or 2 storey bungalow. They use up to 4 x elongated aluminium pole, and you don't rolled and cut in. This is a mistake most professionals do. You cut in first then roll as the thickness of paint on roller and brush is different. After rolling then cut, you might see the lines of the brush.
Wife and I were bubbling around trying to get painting our house and found your channel. Been binge watching and learning and and also subbed. Great content thanks so much.
"I don't need an 18" roller so I have a 9"I have my 18" roller so I can go faster.

Love that you vacuum! Impressed!
I’ve been a professional decorator for over 10 years and have never, ever come across anyone roll before cutting in and especially not double coat the walls but only cut in with one coat. Confusing but interesting to see how other do their thing. If it works for you then great but I’ll stick to cutting in, roll, cut in, roll.
I was just about to ask. Why didn't he cut the corners first
Hey GENIUS DECORATOR....try watching and LISTENING to the VIDEO.
Well done videos. He gets right to the point and explains every step, without any techno music.
Thanks
Thank u for the scriptures very encouraging to see🙂

Iv been a painter decorator 44 years now, most of my customers like a good job done with the quotes written, all including materials...
Costs way it depends on the square footage of there home 🏡
1-2 bedroom units are basic quotes, colors are also discussed and feature walls if mentioned by customers...
3-4 bedroom quotes are past over to customers listing ceilings, walls, doors and trim.
Some customers ask for a 1 coat of primer, left for 24 hrs drying.
Then 2 coat,s of chosen colors each at 2 hr drying periods...
Feature wall are extra time
Such as metallic rolled an diamond cross brushing on second coat finish.
You want the best work you pay for the best painters 🎨
Signed stv 44 year painter and decorator...
You do it the right way Chris--with pride. If you want to keep your residential clients, that's how it's done.
So how long did this whole process take you including washing your painting material, etc ?

Aloha looks great ! I am following these steps today 🎉 Taking a quick break then on to my first coat & cutting* have a nice day !🌺
Really helped me but I would never run a vacuum blowing exhaust near wet paint. ??
True, although, many have hepa filters and don't exhaust much air flow. The air flow is mostly occuring in the bag or canister.
He probably brings his own vacuum which is fine. He has to vacuum right then and there. No ways around it, really.
Thank you ! Today I will paint my sons room .. first time ever lol .. your video is very help

Great video very informative and helpful! Made it look easy! Love the Bible verses as well thanks brother!

Thank u 🙏 now I have confidence In painting my kitchen my self
You cut in FIRST because you will leave brush marks if you do it last AND the paint will be setting while you are still cutting in, on a cold day you will get away with it but not on a warm one.You will make a mess of your work otherwise.
exactly what i was thinking, maybe he has a special paint where its not noticeable, but he did lots of stuf i consider wrong
Great video! Thank you my man 🤜🤛
Don’t cut in afterwards for touch ups .
Cut in twice (both coats)otherwise you will get obvious flashing around light switches corners ect.
Your having to cut in twice anyway so your not saving time just lowering the quality of the Finnish
exactly tom. i am a painter and decorator and and that is one of my pet hates ..you have to cut in twice.
I don’t know how he gets away with that. Maybe because in his part of the country all walls are textured. Here in the east coast everything is smooth plaster. That never works. Cut in both first and second coat.
@@felipejose9909 yes and always cut in and roll one wall at a time.
Thank you for posting this helpful video!
Amazing! This super helpful, thank you!
Where can I find more detail on how you taped/protected the ceiling? Maybe I missed it.
Tape??. 😂😂
it the same, so he didun
You just busted an old myth that you have to do the cut ins first and foremost. Now I know I’m doing it right after all. Much appreciated, and thank you for all your advice.
Nice
Thanks for the information! I'm starting up as a maintenance technician and painting is a large part of what we do.
Totally going to try it this way. I typically cut in then paint, then do the process over again for my second coat. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for your video it gives me better idea of how to start painting
It’s nice if you have reasonable customers who allow you to keep the room clear. I’ve had customers who want all of there stuff back in the room every time you leave. When you have a room that needs a lot of prep and is going to take a few days it is a nightmare.
I would just be up front and let them know I’m a painter and not a moving company lol
Amazing tips no need to look further ..concise and clear
I will try this next time I pain, I did my bedroom did not come out so good thanks
Thanks for watching!
Love the color you covered up.
painters like me love to paint in empty rooms
This was great and simple to watch. Learned about cut ins and numbers of coatings which will help me finish my room. This is going to save me a bunch of money of having to hire a professional painter
It only can be done if the room is empty and all the prepping is done.
Thanks for sharing. This video is very helpful and informative.
You are so welcome!
I used to be a painter back in the day and we always did cut in, roll, cut in, roll finish coat.
I`m sure this works also but that`s still how I do it.
Yes, same here!
Thanks! 👍🏼 [Psalms 83:18]
