    Famicom Disk System sound chip: Ricoh RP2C33 ------------------ it sounds like Wavetabled-FM analog synth feeling, fat & rich. which PC & NES could not emulate it.
    The Ricoh RP2C33, used by the Famicom Disk System, adds one extra sound channel with primitive wavetable support. FDS Produces waves using 64 × 64 custom wavetables with 33 volume settings.
    Although the latest FamiTracker version supports volume envelopes that go all the way up to 32, the volume column in the pattern editor will max out at 0x0F.

    I grew up playing Castlevania 2 and these songs are burned into my brain. I do like the FDS version more. Perhaps it is the fuller richer version that I haven't heard all my life. Also Castlevania 3 Famicom is king on 8 bit.

    why nes is so good with this game is the composers made the effort to rework the tunes to play to the nES's strengths, and made them really punch through, instead of just dropping instrumentation like the zelda games.

    While this version of the soundtrack is interesting, the NES version is definitely more polished. Dwelling of Doom is really lacking, without its energic pitch bends. The drums are also noticeably more discret here. And the global mix/mastering is better too in the NES version.

    The differences between the FDS Japanese version and the NES North American version are interesting. The FDS version's music sounds more "creepy", while the NES version's music sounds more "action-y", and has a greater emphasis on drums, along with vibrato and glissando, the result of a better sound engine.
    I prefer the NES version, but it could just be my personal nostalgia speaking.

    • @DefinitiveDubs
      @DefinitiveDubs 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The FDS version has elements the NES version doesn't, but the NES version sounds better on most of it. The intros to Bloody Tears and Monster Dance make my ears bleed, but Silence of the Daylight sounds awesome. The first part of Dwelling of Doom sounds better on NES, but I like the effect at 4:14. If they had used the FDS's full potential instead of half-assing it, it would sound a lot better than it does.

    I think at the time these sound waves weren't as flexible as they became to be in Castlevania 3. The NES really takes the cake in this situation.

    • @WildMatsu
      @WildMatsu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The FDS's new sound channel is actually extremely flexible, compared to the fairly limited flexibility of the VRC6's three new sound channels. VRC6 wins, I think, by simply having more channels to work with, and having a more advanced sound engine that utilizes the available hardware better. Also, the VRC6's simple PSG synthesis blends together with the existing NES sound channels (also PSG synthesis) much more gracefully than the FDS's wavetable/FM channel, which really sticks out against all the simple PSG channels.

  • @JaredThe
    @JaredThe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great, though the intros to Bloody Tears and Monster Dance got hit hard with that bell-ish sounding synth. Though besides that, generally good amounts of improvement thanks to the added channel I'd say. Incredibly interesting to hear the FDS Monster Dance was the base for the remix in Smash Ultimate though.

      There's just something satisfying about rich primitive chiptunes an old, low-channel 8-bit chip produces. Midis just feel horrible by comparison. Same reason why I can't stand something like Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire's music compared to RG/GS.
      Although some soundtracks (Metroid) are the same with more depth, so it's hard to say.

      It could be the mixing of the FDS's wavetable. Grad1u53 does make some channels louder than what they were originally on the NES, like the DPCM channel which was used for drum samples. It might sound better playing this on an actual FDS.

    How can this music come from an 8 bit console?!

    The NES version sounds better to my ears. The added FDS channel has interesting possibilites but I don't think it's used to its full potential. Dwelling of Doom, my favorite track from CV2 is kinda dull on here. The two tracks I kind of like here are Silence of Daylight and the Dracula fight theme.

      Late reply, but CV3 (Akumajo Densetsu) did it right with the VRC6. Except that sawtooth wave was a bit too powerful.

    Yikes. Your title is all messed up. The name of the *original* version is "Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin". It was released for the Famicom Disk System and the title translates to "Dracula II: Seal of Curse". Guess what it does _not_ translate to?

      The Naming screen came from fucking satan, it's in katakana and it has that damn song...
      Silence of Daylight has that awful effect when you overlay two identical square waves on top of each other.
      On the other hand I think the beginning of Bloody Tears is pretty good.

      Castlevania 3 was from an advanced chip, the VRC6. THis is just raw FDS sound.
