Man it sounds all so euphoric... my favorite MSX games... the Nemesis/Salamnder series.... man I never forget when I first saw the demo of Nemesis at the Firato in Amsterdam in 84. I was stunned after seeing those graphics and gameplay... that 3 beam laser with following pods... man... still playing it on BlueMSX :)
I'm sure that VERY few people, if anybody at all, would be sympathetic with me here in my saying this, but even though every single one of these tracks are totally awesome, my favorite of the bunch, BY FAR, is Prophet Fire (Middle Demo - 03:57). It's just so damned catchy, I love the dissonant chords that hang for a bit, and the way they resolve (04:00), and the vaguely pearloid flourishes that are SOOOOO wavetable synth at 04:08. This track is SOLID GOLD! I think I know what my next ringtone is gonna be. :-)
You know, the more time passes, the more I become a "wavetable first" kinda guy! Back in the day as a pre-teen and a teen, I was so pro-SNES, not just in audio, but for our purposes, in audio, as an "ADPCM first" guy. Then in the early-mid 2000's, as a 20-something, I began to favor the Genesis and by the end of the 2000s, had really become an "FM-first" kinda guy, and not just Genesis, but all FM, and in fact, in the world of 80's and 90's video game FM, there are quite a few platforms that do it better than Genesis. Now that we're in the mid 20teens, and now that I'm old enough to run for president, I'm feeling myself beginning to shift yet again, as I said up front, this time towards favoring wavetable synth, most notably PCE/TG16 and MSX SCC. It's so interesting how our tastes change as we get older. Then again, I got the SNES in 92, the Genesis in 93, and didn't get a TG16 til late 2000, when I was already going on 21. And on top of that, I didn't REALLY start plumbing the wavetable synth VGM world til really only a few years ago...so maybe it's just that my exposure to this world didn't come til so much later. Who knows? In any case, my point is that while I love Prophet Fire for what it does musically, equally important to me is the soundscape created by these wonderful SCC wavetable voices! It's just the total package, you know? By the way, another thing I love about this track musically that I didn't mention before is that bass! While the voice itself isn't too similar, the bass run itself is almost "Joe Jackson's 'Steppin' Out' levels of irrepressible catchiness" :-) Cheers!!!
Played Salamander and the Gradius (Nemesis) games literally on the daily when I was little, way back in the late 80s. The soundtrack still sounds awesome, over 30 years later.
This was the only Konami game I bought back in the day. They were very expensive in Europe. I've listened to the music many many times. Hacked the cartridge so it wouldn't start the game to use the SCC for ripped games from floppy, so I could play pariodius, kingsvalley 2, nemesis series etc. I still know all the melodies! Starfield is my favorite from Salamander. Good memories!
I only played the NES version back in the day, so this is a mind-blowing upgrade. I don't deny that there are some great scores in the modern era, but few will age this well.
Destroy them all. I created a loop of this track when I was a teenager using a ghetto blaster with regular left right audio cables running from my MSX just so I could hear those first few chords again, amazing scc sound in the 80's. And burn in the wind takes the piss.
I've always wanted to see a vr version of salamander... esp the fire stage with the flames shooting over and under the ship.. damn that would be amazing!
I wanna play Salamander with this specific OST, but don't really want to play the MSX version itself. Wish there was a modern version with different music options.
So I looked into the SCC chip and it uses Wavetable Synthesis much like the Namco WSG and the PC Engine's sound chip. I love the unique sound of WTS so much, if only there was a sound program to take advantage of it.
Poison of Snake boss theme is pure magic. To me the MSX soundtrack is superior to the arcade one. I only realise how good the SCC sounds recently, since in my MSX time I only heard it through a crappy TV.
*Sonic 3 & Knuckles: We'll make a game where you have to combine two cartridges to get the perfect ending!* *Salamander MSX: Difficulty wise, hold my beer.*
The Konami SCC Chip is incredible! The only other 8 bit machine that has better or equally great sound is the Commodore 64, and even on that machine a lot of the stuff sounds very muffled.
Have any special effects been applied to this playback? It sounds different from what i have heard in emulation (although i really like this one, its somewhat arcade-like)
Muy cierto!
The intro of this game with that music and sound effects is ultraepic. Makes you want get into the ship and start shooting against everything 😁
Scc

My childhood
MSX ver. Is so special to me.
Quickly becoming one of my favorite video game OSTs
I'm sure that VERY few people, if anybody at all, would be sympathetic with me here in my saying this, but even though every single one of these tracks are totally awesome, my favorite of the bunch, BY FAR, is Prophet Fire (Middle Demo - 03:57).

+The Best of Nerd Noise Radio I was just thinking of this track. Love those flat V chords.

The main reason I come back to this video
I got the same thought
It would be nice to integrate it into the arcade like a bridge from one stage to another. More like a transition phase.
i think this is the best MSX recording out of them all. Best enjoyed with headphones
Departure again is a phenomenal track. Thanks for uploading
WOW, there is not a *single* weak track in this entire score.
I remember playing the C64 version of this. As much as I love the C64's SiD chip and the sounds it makes, this is a far superior soundtrack.
I would really love to see the more story-based Gradius games remade in HD. The MSX games really are awesome.
Played Salamander and the Gradius (Nemesis) games literally on the daily when I was little, way back in the late 80s. The soundtrack still sounds awesome, over 30 years later.
MSX1/MSX2 music PSG+Konami's special poliphonic sound chip "SCC"... ;-)
I still can't believe how much better the MSX version's OST is compared to the arcade original!! They even have some original tunes in between.
Indeed the Konami 051649 2212P003 Sound Creative Chip plays a major role in this upgrade.
Amazing soundtrack !! I can remember playing this on the NES but the music was never this good..
Yeah the MSX version was amazing... and ridiculously difficult lol.
you were probably playing life force, the north american version of this game. the music there is more 8-bit and definitely more 80's sounding
This was the only Konami game I bought back in the day. They were very expensive in Europe. I've listened to the music many many times.
I only played the NES version back in the day, so this is a mind-blowing upgrade. I don't deny that there are some great scores in the modern era, but few will age this well.
Operartion Seedleek
They just don't make them like they used to... not just nostalgia talking... This soundtrack is a 14/14
Amen. 🙏
Starting off strong with some odd meter. Bold. I like it.
MSX best version
EXTREME HARD MODE !
Destroy them all. I created a loop of this track when I was a teenager using a ghetto blaster with regular left right audio cables running from my MSX just so I could hear those first few chords again, amazing scc sound in the 80's. And burn in the wind takes the piss.

This soundtrack is better than the arcade version.
And that's really saying something given an already awesome OST.
Agreed! The MSX soundtrack gave the already great tunes some much needed punch and new life.
This is with added stereo and reverb
@@Alianger if you listen to the cartridge in a fairly normal living room from a fairly normal TV, it sounds exactly like this.
I wanna play Salamander with this specific OST, but don't really want to play the MSX version itself. Wish there was a modern version with different music options.
Gotta love the 80's
Kerakerakera! Okelampa! It's Hikari Sentai Maskman? Haha.
Konami who was the power behind MSX has surpassed the gaming future during 80's
Very good music! 😎
Fly High Stage 2 is amazing
The game is painfully difficult, but it's fun
Burn in the wind is another awesome track.
The SCC chip sounds like if Namco's sound chip and Konami's amazing soundtracks had a baby.
So I looked into the SCC chip and it uses Wavetable Synthesis much like the Namco WSG and the PC Engine's sound chip. I love the unique sound of WTS so much, if only there was a sound program to take advantage of it.
Wavetable Synthesis has a unique texture not found on PSG or FM chips.
@@SpongeMagic Yeah you beat me into it
It‘s perfect.
I only finished this game using cheat codes, back in the day. Great game, great OST.
my god . i remember everything
Oh I like the bosses theme too. Really tense.
My dad was playing this yesterday and I find Power of Anger my fav soundtrack. You'll probably be able to tell what part of the soundtrack I like LOOL
Music in this one is so much better than the NES version!!!
10:03 The best title for this music is GREAT JAPAAAAAN
best part 06:50
It's my favorite part too!
Poison of Snake boss theme is pure magic. To me the MSX soundtrack is superior to the arcade one. I only realise how good the SCC sounds recently, since in my MSX time I only heard it through a crappy TV.
Very similar to Turtles 1 enemy soundtrack..I guess Venom bmg @12:42, like the rest is also good..
Oh yes that Turtles song has the same kind of vibe indeed.
*Sonic 3 & Knuckles: We'll make a game where you have to combine two cartridges to get the perfect ending!*
*Salamander MSX: Difficulty wise, hold my beer.*
Starfield is my favorite :)
There are 2 composers for this album. Motoaki Furukawa (古川元亮), Masahiro Ikariko (碇子正広)
The NES/FC OST doesn’t even compare to this
Sound Custom Chip!! Excellllllllllent!!!
Getting the good ending was such a pain in the ass
EPIC GAME
I watched a video that talked lot about this game, so I had to check it out! The video as on MSX Computers by Displaced Gamers, it was interesting!
Agreed @bkuuzin helped me out picking my MSX of choice, Panasonic MSX2+ A1WSX BTW
Destroy them all such an awesome track.
I really miss my MSX and Konami games :(
fionnmaccumhail76 What happened to them?
My mother..................... thought was rubbish and threw away :(
Oh no... OMG... :'-(
John Hassink Not enough, after my Hit Bit, went out my Amiga500+
I need to find a good MSX emulator and all the games (also all the Amiga games)
I would scold her so bad.
Poison of snake 🎶
The first ten seconds of the intro theme are the best part of the whole soundtrack.
It feels like this is a remaster version of MSX salamander!
I fucking love Starfield! It's so catchy! I hate how short it is though...
MSX OST better than the arcade.
I remember that the Prophet Fire actually starts after you clear Fly High Stage 2.
0:01, 2:39, 1:30, 5:51, 4:45, 11:18 14:00, 15:29 Haha, My favourites Salamander Soundtrack from Hina, Lynn Mei, Sonohara Mizuka, Kyouka Narumiya, Ichinose Saki (Plunderer Anime)! Are you seriously?
The Konami SCC Chip is incredible! The only other 8 bit machine that has better or equally great sound is the Commodore 64, and even on that machine a lot of the stuff sounds very muffled.
Have you ever heard an MSX song with the "Moonsound" sound expansion? It's actually an OPL4. Talk about 8-bit performance. ;-)
Ok
❤️
In order to get Good End, you need to collect all the prophecy notes on each stages and put Nemesis II in the Cartridge, sounds hard huh?
*That means you have an extra stage to go over, huh?*
@@CelestialReturner yep
Operation Seedleek
3:57 is such a jamm, damn
Sounds like you could remake that into a modern day jazz song for Street Fighter or something
Suck it Famicom this is freaking great!
Have any special effects been applied to this playback? It sounds different from what i have heard in emulation (although i really like this one, its somewhat arcade-like)
Yes, it has SCC chip in those Konami classics cartages.
nice
Featuring Iggy Rock and Zowie Scott... perhaps they meant Zoey?
Why don't you upload NES version?
I like your play format the best!
can any one tell me where I can find the MIDI file for this ! ? really I need it so bad
This is not MIDI.
poison of snake!
Right on! It’s my favorite track
Is there really anything better than wavetables?
Of course not!
I think I've heard the stage 4 music somewhere but I'm not sure where
Burn the Wind!!!
