The song “When I’m With You” by the Canadian band SHERIFF is one of the most beautiful romantic ballads of all time!
The song was released in January 1983 in Canada as the second single from their debut album SHERIFF. It quickly went Top 10 in Canada in 1983, but it didn't do as well in the US at the same time. The song later reached number one in the United States alone in 1989, four years after the band broke up in 1985.
This song is also notable for being one of the few number one hits not to have a promotional video during the MTV era. Additionally, it is noted for vocalist Freddy Curci holding the final note for 19.3 seconds, making it the longest note for a male pop singer.
The song reached number eight on the RPM chart in Canada in January 1983, the band's homeland, where it was their biggest hit. In the United States, it entered the Billboard Hot 100 on May 14, 1983 and peaked at number 61 a few weeks later. Some time later, disappointed and frustrated by their continued lack of international success, the band broke up. However, 5 years later, in November 1988, Brian Philips, Program Director for KDWB in Minneapolis and WKTI in Milwaukee started playing the song, and eventually other American radio stations followed suit. This encouraged Capitol Records to re-release the song as a single. On February 4, 1989, the song finally reached number one in the United States. At that time, former SHERIFF members keyboardist Arnold Lanni and bassist Wolf Hassell formed a duo called Frozen Ghost, and refused to form the group again. SHERIFF lead vocalist Freddy Curci and guitarist Steve DeMarchi, who worked as couriers in the interim, got together and formed the super band ALIAS, along with former HEART band members Roger Fisher (guitar), Steve Fossen (bass ) and Mike Derosier (drums), and achieved success in 1990 with their first album called ALIAS with "More Than Words Can Say" reaching #2. However, in 1991, with the arrival of a new musical style called "grunge", and the second album already ready, the label demanded a change in the style of their songs. They refused and ended up losing the contract, which caused the end of the band. Vocalist Freddy Curci himself revealed in an interview about the separation of the members: “ALIAS never broke up. The music has changed. We couldn't get our music out there. No one wanted to hear more. Grunge was all the rage and, you know what, that's okay, because music has to do that. Need to change all the time. That's how it stays new. ALIAS is still Steve and me. ALIAS will always be Steve and me. Steve and I will make an album tomorrow if the fans need it.” In January 2009, finally, ALIAS announced the release of their long-awaited second album. This album, aptly titled “Never Say Never”, was recorded in 1992 and was intended to follow up the highly touted debut album, but due to the rapidly evolving music scene of that era, where grunge was on the rise and metal was fading out, it was never released. Some of the songs from this album were re-recorded and appeared on vocalist Freddy Curci's solo album "Dreamer's Road", however, many tracks remained unreleased until 2009.

Interesting fact was that this song was released in 1982 and was a top 10 hit in Canada but did not become a hit in the US until 6 years later in 1989 after a DJ in Minnesota started playing it and then other stations around the US followed sending it to #1 on the charts. By this time the band had split a few years before this but some of the band members (including the lead singer Freddy Curci) re-formed a band called Alias. Under that band name they had a hit called "More Than Words Can Say" that became a hit a year after this song. Freddy held the record for the longest note held...he said he was waiting for the producer to motion to cut off. This is one of my all time fav songs!!

This band broke up in 1983, and two of the guys formed a different band. In 1988, a Las Vegas station started playing this song, and other radio stations followed. Sheriff was a pop-rock group from Toronto who had one-hit in the U.S.: "When I'm With You" which charted twice on the Billboard Hot 100. The first charting was in 1983 when it peaked @ #61 after 7 weeks on the chart. But in Nov. 1988, it re-entered the Hot 100 [due to some midwestern DJs playing it on the radio & Capitol Records re-released the single.] This time "WIWY" did the seemingly impossible-- on Feb.4 1989, it hit #1! Sheriff had already disbanded in 1985.

This has a crazy back dtory to it.The band was formed in 1979 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and consisted of vocalist Freddy Curci, guitarist Steve DeMarchi, keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Arnold Lanni, bassist Wolf Hassel and drummer Ric Dowhan, later replaced by Rob Elliott. The band's only full-length release was a self-titled 1982 album, that featured a Canadian Top 40 hit, "You Remind Me" as well as their most famous song, "When I'm with You", which reached No. 8 in Canada and No. 61 in the United States in 1983. Five years later it was re-released and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. The band split up in 1985, citing internal tensions. Lanni and Hassel went on to form Frozen Ghost and racked up several hits in Canada, the biggest of which was "Should I See," which reached No. 69 in the U.S.
Six years after "When I'm with You" had been a chart hit in Canada, Las Vegas DJ Jay Taylor began playing the song. KRXY DJ Gabe Baptiste also started playing "When I'm With You," and listener response was positive. As a result, Capitol Records re-released the song. It subsequently became No. 1 in the United States in February 1989. While Curci and DeMarchi made efforts to re-form Sheriff, a reunion was not to be. The lack of interest from other Sheriff bandmembers eventually led Curci and DeMarchi to team up with ex-Heart members Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Mike Derosier to form Alias More Than Words Can Say was a phenominal hit right out of the gate - th-cam.com/video/ZPr7xs_CG-0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_qTCJVyIZiII6z2N.

Two bands formed out of the ashes of Sheriff. Alias, which had a hit with "More Than Words Can Say" and Frozen Ghost, who were bigger in Canada, but had a couple of minor hits in the U.S.A with "What Should I See" and "Dream Come True". They are severely underrated and deserve a listen.

Of the songs ever written, there are songs about love and then there are love songs. They are entirely different from each other. This song is a real love song and is as timeless and ageless as love itself. Whether sang by a child or by an elder, it speaks volumes of genuine romance in sheer simplicity and elegance. The fact that it was written as a Valentine's Day gift from this band's pianist to his new girlfriend whom he married a couple of years later should testify of its standard, for few songs in history capture the moment as this one has.
    Loved the video, guys.

Saludos !!.

Interesting story about this song: it was originally released in 1983 and did ok in Canada, but not in the US. The band couldn't break through in the US, so they broke up. Fast forward to 1989, a DJ started playing this song and people loved it, then more stations played it and Capitol records re-released the song. It went to #1 in the US. A 6-year old song from a band that didn't exist anymore. The 80's were awesome!

There is an interesting video called "Behind The Vinyl" where the singer and guitarist are revisiting the song decades later, and apparently that long high note at the end was done during a rerecording of the song which they did because 5+ years after the song peaked and faded away in Canada, some radio stations started to play it in the US. So the record company had them record the song again, to sound current. The singer was expecting the music to fade out so he'd know when the song was ending, but it didn't and so he didn't know when to stop, so he just kept going lol Love stories like that, where random accidents end up helping to make a great song
