semiforce98 The Ramones were, and are, an awesome band. I would just put The Clash at #1 due to their diverse and versatile sound, excellent writing, and groundbreaking showmanship.

Dylan Lormand Chaos UK are hardcore they are in the same class as Black Flag Minor Threat and Bad Brains. The Ramones are punk only a jag off would say otherwise.
Love NOFX but Bad Brains was way more influential. If you listen to hardcore punk you won't go far without hearing elements that Bad Brains brought to the game.
Pistols can't touch the Clash with only 1 highly overrated album, and the Clash actually were around for more than 1 year and could develop their sound better which makes them objectively better cof cof
***** Of course!!! That's why London Calling and Sandinista experimented with punk, developed it and ultimately punked the punks! Revolutionary does not mean best, and if you think Sex Pistols were THAT much more revolutionary than Clash you don't know your rock. Joe Strummer >>>>> John Lydon any day of the week
Dylan Lormand When did appearance decide who is punk and who isn't. The Ramones looked nothing similar to The Exploited. But both were punk. I get your thing about lyrics. Green Day's lyrics is too intricate and poetic for most punk fans to follow. So they just reject it as non sense while it really isn't. Too slow? I don't think so. They are generally faster than The Clash ever was.
Truth, the thing is Green Day has eben a punk band, but they are too mainstream now... Now they do this typical radio pop rock, while The Offspring is still doing punk, not political punk or hardcore punk, but still nice skatepunk
I think the Offspring is a hell of a lot better than Green Day. Because at least the Offspring shows a lot more kinship to their Punk Roots, and they went on recent tours with Fellow Punk bands, Bad Religion, and NOFX and Social Distortion. Green Day is a good band and all but they just sold out and became the basis for modern mainstream pop punk bands like Sum 41.
Greenday is Pop-Punk and The Offspring too. This list is about Old School and Original Punk that's why there are no Pop-Punk Bands such as Greenday and The Offspring in it.!
Ah Social Distortion. My favorite band of all time and can't count how many times I see them live when they visit Jersey. I feel like Rancid should be on the list because they brought Ska to the masses.
punk is such a changing genre some bands start out as punk and become alt. I mean look at bands like Greenday, The Offspring, AFI (Look at their early albums Offspring's self titled and ignition and AFI's "...So proud of you" the dropkick Murphys... punk is very hard to define... hell music in general exists to break boundaries I think all music has worth and is constantly changing.
+Mauro Ito Ramones wasn´t first? I was really sure thatwithout Sex Pistols, The Clash could have never existed at all. And Ramones appeared before Sex Pistols. Just saying
ciaran fay yeah but that's because they hardly play punk music, I literally don't know why they are labeled a "punk" band since they play nothing but proto rock
They're not strictly a three chord band which I like, imagine anyone releasing a song criticising middle eastern leaders today, they had serious balls.
How can you put Minor Threat just as a honorable mention when you are talking about influence? They were one of the most influential Hardcore bands of the 80s.
This is the problem with punk, it means different things to different people and it's an extremely vague word to describe music. If you're arguing about "punk music" in the comments, chances are you're not very punk though... I wanna say NoFx should be number one, but I don't wanna hear some shit about how they're not punk enough...
"Ramones manager Danny Fields recalls a conversation between Johnny Ramone and Clash bassist Paul Simonon (which he mislocates at the Roundhouse): "Johnny asked him, 'What do you do? Are you in a band?' Paul said, 'Well, we just rehearse. We call ourselves the Clash but we're not good enough.' Johnny said, 'Wait till you see us-we stink, we're lousy, we can't play. Just get out there and do it.'"" This is what punk should be about. Having fun even when playing simple, but memorable tunes. It was the perfect response to the progressive and heavy metal music which had become overblown, pretentious and lacked the fun that rock'n'roll once was about. The people arguing about what is punk and what isn't really miss the point.
I know Green Day, Sum 41, The Offspring and Blink-182 are not as "punk" as many of the bands here. But I think they deserved to be on the Honorable Mentions (especially Green Day).
Jon Snow You wanna know whats wrong with punk. Listen to the so called 'hardcore' bands of 80s. Fucking abominations earning money in the name of 'music' when all they made was noise. Nirvana was ok though.
ThunderbirdOnFire Actually listen to punk. It's known because of its lyrics not because of how well they could play an instrument (which Blink-182 members couldn't from this the pop-punk label). You may like pop music but what you are saying would make any of the members of the mentioned bands want to punch you.
Jack Emmerich Pop music? Blink 182, maybe lately. Others definitely not, they are alternative rock. Talking about lyrics, I am yet to listen to songs having better lyrics than, say East Jesus Nowhere or 21st Century Breakdown. Oh, and did you just say Blink 182 can't play their instruments? Lol, their drummer is amazing. Their guitarist is also kinda goo, especially is older albums (listen to 'Carousel'). Can't say so about the bassist though.
***** I personally enjoy it because it's catchy, enjoyable, and the vast majority of songs are somewhat easy to relate to. Not to mention I grew up on it so idk that's just how I was raised.
Collective facepalm for green day comments. This list is the original punk era. Then came the pop punk of the 90s. Blink 182, green day, etc. This list was definitely accurate.
Nice list! I would have changed The Sex Pistols and The Clash as The Sex Pistols really only had 1 album where as The Clash had a bunch more. Still though, can't deny the influence of The Sex Pistols so I really can't complain too much :p Agree with The Ramone's as number 1 though.
10.) The emergency 9.) The leaving trains 8.) Bad Religion 7.) Urge overkill 6.) Dead kennedys 5.) Black flag 4.) The stooges 3.) The Ramones 2.) The clash 1.) The sex pistols
In my opinion, Green Day didn't make the list because they ALWAYS felt like a mainstream attempt to cash in on the culture revival in the early 90s. They're pop with a punk sound, and if you can't tell the difference, maybe you don't know what punk actually is/was? Just sayin'.
green days first two albums were actually full punk, then with the release of dookie they experimented with pop punk. however pop punk is just a sub genre of punk so why not put them as an honorable mention
listen to rise against first record up to there third, its punk, nofx have pop punk songs but they also got some reallly good raw punk rock music, and although the offspring are shit now there early stuff and im talking first record and up to smash they where great
Eli Engwicht Well, I agree. I have listened to Rise Against's older albums and yes they were punk rock. Talking about NOFX, their new 'raw' music is nowhere a raw as the hardcore punk they made in 80s and early 90s, and is mostly still pop punk.
***** well really its because those guys got me into music because i easily could relate to it, and they ARE punk. they made their mark with dookie and american idiot but then again they aimed with the older ones in this list.
Green Day has not been influential. They have clearly no legacy. And the producor of the SP had the idea to create a punk band after having seen the Ramones in concert. Ramones inspirated the SP.
Honestly I prefer Sex Pistols over The Ramones. The Ramones are extremely overrated in my book. My favorite punk band is The Adicts. Wish they would've been in the video but eh it was still a good vid.
Don't worry bud, there will come a day you realize that you only listened to The Adicts because they made you look punk rock. When they day comes you'll see what I mean when I say "No one actually likes The Adicts".
Sadly that day wont come. I dont give a shit about "looking punk rock". Why should i care about looking a certain way if I'm just here for good music. I enjoy the Adicts. So what? If you don't like it then do yourself a favor and stop responding. I said it once and ill say it again you stick to your opinion ill stick to mine.
Pennywise? Anti Flag? Agent Orange? The Vandals? Offspring? The Deviates? Guttermouth? The Unseen? Ignite? Rise Against? i mean fuck, i just named off my own top ten.
Sex Pistols better than The Clash?? They made *one* album, which musically and lyrically was average at best. Sex Pistols were just a manufactured punk band created by Malcolm McLaren since it was becoming popular and he decided to cash in on it. They were more about creating controversy ("God Save the Queen") and headlines than actually having a message. As much as I like The Ramones, putting them first is just crazy. Musically they never veered off their typical 3 chord sound which is fine for a short while but nothing you listen to for more than 30 minutes. I don't know about you but music usually is judged by how well written it is and its many layers. Iggy Pop and the Stooges easily triumph Ramones too. These 90's pop-punk bands really are indistinguishable from most dime-a-dozen hard rock bands and really just rebel for the sake of rebelling. Rock wrapped up in a pseudo-punk image, made not too offend anybody too much, spells watered down music. Dead Kennedy's stood for what they said and dared offending even such "great musical institutions" as MTV. Most of the 90's "punk" bands allowed themselves to be milked by MTV for all their worth and unlike the grunge band Nirvana - who openly stated their disdain for MTV and thrived on it - these others just rode in on the void that had been left. The reality is that the best "punk bands" of the last 20 years aren't even doing punk music. They understand the genre and what it stands for more than the we're-angry-at-everything-we-really-don't-know-a-shit-about punk bands of today.
I love the offspirng to death and I'm kinda urked that they are not on the list but I'm really pissed that millencolin, toy dolls or lagwagon aren't even mentioned and that Rancid is only an honorable mention. Rancid, Green Day, the Offspring, etc. were the ones that brought new life to punk music (not the movement). I think that should be aknowledged at least in the mentions.
Nate Wood Oh give it a rest. Smash is just as punk as any sex pistols album. You can't say they're not punk because they released one pop-ish album. In pure musical sense even the Ramones (that I idolize) were more pop than the offspring (baby I love you, here today gone tomorrow, bonzo goes to bitburg, something to believe in are all pop-ish). Green Day I agree with though... But you still can't dispute the fact that with their early efforts they kickstarted the revival of punk in the 90's
Absolutely not. Green day hasn't made a decent album in 20 years and that's a simple fact. The Ramones and the sex pistols even with all their importance are just bubble gum punk rock. Green day can't even claim that.
Damn, are you just dense or are you acting stupid? I agree. Green day are pop punk but you can NOT despute the fact that they helped popularize punk in their early days. And when I say you can't, I'm not just saying that because I think so, I'm saying it because it's fact! The offspring, Rancid, Green Day, Millencolin and later on Blink 182. Most are not pure punk today but started out as such. Now you can cry about it all you want but that's FACT!
Bad Religion deserves to be on all lists like this. They've influenced countless punk bands and have remain relevant over 4 different decades. It's nuts.
Maybe cause they are not one of the most influential bands and although Green Day was not bad and even though I never liked Blink-182 I can say that they don't even live up to the greatness of these bands that were mentioned. If anything they forgot didn't mention other amazing bands such as Operation Ivy, Crass, or even atleast place Minor Threat in the list cause they had a great influence and Ian went on to Fugazi which is another amazing band but eh they cant please us all >.
MrRagekeepers these are not top 10 pop punk bands that use to be punk so why would green day or blink 182 be in there most real punk rocker FUCKING HATE THE SHIT OUT OF GREENDAY its not the same but I'm also say that those bands they chose for there list wernt all that punky but more or less fore runners but like black flag and dead Kennedys took it to another level
Punk is a term used to classified punk in general, including all sub-genres. Pop punk being one of them. It also clearly states that this video also featured ALTERNATIVE bands, which both has converted to. It also mentioned this list featured bands whom were influential on the genre. Green Day, like them or not, was a huge part in the newer era of punk, influencing bands like Sum 41, blink, etc. Just 'cause you don't like a band, doesn't mean they're bad.
Joy Division were very much a punk band before creating the "post-punk" masterpieces they're known for. But punk bands are allowed to evolve, or should be, and Joy Division were certainly much more influential than many bands on this list. Aside from that glaring omission, no major complaints. One could quibble about the degree of influence bands like Bad Religion and Social Distortion had compared to, say, the Buzzcocks or Patti Smith (or The Damned, Dead Boys, Richard Hell, etc...) but these things are always going to be somewhat subjective. Speaking of Patti Smith, I would have included some women on the list, as punk really opened the floodgates as far as women getting involved in "rock" music in a big way. There were a few before like Suzi Quatro and the Runaways and a handful of others, but people like the Slits, Poly Styrene, and Siouxsie (yes, the Banshees were a punk band) changed a lot of attitudes about women in music, and both pre-dated and inspired the 90s riot grrrl movement I might also have not included Iggy & the Stooges. Massively influential to pretty much every punk band who ever existed including every other band on this list, but the Stooges predated punk by several years, so if they're going to be included, then so should the Velvet Underground, who were arguably even more influential than the Stooges in the grand scheme of things (and the argument could be made to a somewhat lesser extent for the Dolls and MC5 too). This also goes toward my argument for including Joy Division. If you're going to cite the Stooges, who are commonly described as "proto-punk" in the ever-expanding lexicon of essentially meaningless genre descriptions, then you ought to include Joy Division, who are most often described as "post-punk". Also, you include Bad Brains, Black Flag, the Misfits, and the DK's, and mention Minor Threat and the Adolescents (or was it the Descendents? - can't be bothered watching again to find out), but make no mention of any UK groups from the early 80s like Discharge or GBH who had a massive influence on the development of hardcore. Same goes for D.O.A. from Canada. Very America-centric list, and it leaves me with the impression that whoever came up with it is from California. Right, so I guess I have more complaints than I thought when I started writing...but perhaps I'm nitpicking. It was a pretty reasonable list compared to some others of a similar nature that I've seen. Would have skipped the "honorable mention" bit. Some of those groups really don't rank anywhere near the top 10 as far as influence goes. I mean, I like Rancid well enough, but they're basically Clashmania. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it just goes to show how influential The Clash (and Stiff Little Fingers, and The Ruts, etc) were.
Punk Rock is not a musical style. You wouldn't know it today because of the way it's been codified over the years to the point where many (if not most) punk bands from the 70s wouldn't even be considered punk if they came out today. Warsaw is Joy Division. Same band, they just changed their name so people wouldn't get them mixed up with Warsaw Pakt. They were as "punk" as anyone, and the fact that they were a lot more original than most makes them even more "punk" than most.
OH MY GOD I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING YOU JUST SAID RICHARD HE'LL AND PATTI SMITH DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THIS LIST ALSO BIKINI KILL AND THE REPLACEMENTS AND THE MINUTEMEN!!!!
IMO Sex pistols should be first, their influence was much bigger, than the Ramones's ;p Ramones introduced leather jackets into punk-rockers, while Sex pistols introduced whole behaviour of punks
McLauren was the New York Dolls Manager before the sex pistols and its already well documented that the Sex Pistols were this made up band that McLauren put together.
Ah, you are those "true" punk badasses. Silly me to dare to say something that doesnt agree with your tastes cuz everything else is shit. Oh what i am going to do now? Oh, the agony of being attacked by "true" punkers! Leave me alone, i will cry now!
Funny thing is due to your rash assumptions, you believe I'm a punk fan. There's a large amount of music on my phone, and the only "punk band" on it are the Ramones. I'm a metal fan through and through. But I consider myself educated in other genres. So I wouldn't consider the Offspring punk as much as alternative rock, because they were not punk at all. And since you threw an insult into your fiery response, here's one. Go fuck yourself.
Hey Watchmojo, how about doing a top 10 best bands to skateboard to!!! This would include hip hop, punk, hardcore and regular rock! I just have to say first that I have played the Skate video game while listening to early Van Halen cds and it goes REALLY well with skateboarding video games!!! Seriously!
The band that didn't quite make it onto this list is HeadAche, but this is perhaps given that they formed after this video was uploaded. Search up "Prisoner - HeadAche (Official Audio Video)". You'll see what I mean
Misfits were too low on the list
Ikr they should have been in the negatives, there are way better bands that deserved that spot on this list
+Goop Videos Too high you mean?
yeah I find it kinda infuriating.
I don't like them, or The Sex Pistols because they stereotype punk rock into people wearing tattoos and ear rings who just scream into a microphone.
+Benny Biggums You sir are an idiot...How in the hell did The Sex Pistols fit into a stereotype of what a punk is or was when they were one of the very first "punk" bands...Oh and the Misfits, yeah they were not a stereotype either...all the bands that came MUCH MUCH MUCH more later who copied these bands were a sort of stereotype, but then again you must not know much about punk to make a comment like that to begin with.

NewModel NumberNine Green Day brought us Blink 182, Simple Plan, Sum 41, etc.

frankie Dorgan what band would you take out for Rancid?😂😂 I’m curious
The Damned haven't made it on a single one of these punk lists... I am much disappoint :(

Ramones > the clash, just my opinion
The Ramones are the original punk band
Sex pistols are king of punk
Bad Religion is #1 in my heart
Same :) Might not be the most influential band, but they sure are my favorites
Agreed! I also would have swapped out Bad Brains for pretty much any of the "honorable mentions".
Same here.
It's a crime that The Clash aren't number 1.
The Jam? Suicidal Tendencies?
Generation X?
Suicidal turned into a Metal band. Still legit, but less punk
T'were it my list Generation X gets Top Ten for songs, Top Ten for original Brit punk bands but nothing else. Albums though were spotty.
The Jam were great but by their third album didn’t really feel like a punk band anymore
I think NOFX deserved to be on the list
Well they're on the honorable mentions.

Steve Shaha The Clash, to me shouldn't have been on the list at all.
Joey Tapia I don't understand why anyone would say that. But we can agree to disagree agreeably.
The Passenger is in Iggy's Lust for Life album, not The Stooges
Why is Social Distortion above the Misfits. Social Distortion is barley even Punk for Christ's sake
And the Misfits are?
+Hunter Smith They're more horror punk

Actually, Social D is quite punk, the earlier stuff is anyway
I don't listen to the Ramones, but HUUUUUUGE RESPECT! They totally deserve no.1
(Just a personal opinion) I think that The Clash should be number one, with Ramones at 2
Dylan Lormand Oh god. So The Ramones are not punk anymore??
Dylan Lormand Dude they are Punk don't be ridiculous now.

There is no way Offspring is punk and Green Day isn't.
BOB all the the examples are what sid vicious from Sex Pistols would always wear lmao
Greenday is Pop-Punk and The Offspring too.
This list is about Old School and Original Punk that's why there are no Pop-Punk Bands such as Greenday and The Offspring in it.!
So what would u say about blink 182
Skate-Punk and also Pop-Punk.
Saying green day should make a top ten punk list is like asking why MXPX didn't make it. This list is garbage. period.
Nate Wood true, but back in 94, those two bands did wonders for the scene.
Maybe but just like LP they changed too much to Mainstream Pop in my mind.
1-the clash
2-sex pistols
3-ramones
4-the stooges/iggy
5-mc5
6-new york dolls
7-dead boys
8-green day
9-black flag
Ah Social Distortion. My favorite band of all time and can't count how many times I see them live when they visit Jersey. I feel like Rancid should be on the list because they brought Ska to the masses.
1. The Clash
2. The Sex Pistols
3. Iggy And The Stooges
Well done, mate! Well done!
+Sean “Diddy” Combs
*clapping*
+Sean “Diddy” Combs
1.Iggy And The Stooges
2.The Clash
3.The Sex Pistols
You know nothing, Sean Combs.
1. Sex Pistols
2. The Clash
3. Black Flag
No Circle Jerks
I know right 😑 ....
punk is such a changing genre some bands start out as punk and become alt.
The clash should be number 1 london calling its a classic album, they change everything.. later the ramones #justsaying ✌
+Mauro Ito Ramones wasn´t first? I was really sure thatwithout Sex Pistols, The Clash could have never existed at all. And Ramones appeared before Sex Pistols.
Just saying
The Clash could have existed if the Ramones weren't around ffs
ciaran fay yeah but that's because they hardly play punk music, I literally don't know why they are labeled a "punk" band since they play nothing but proto rock
They're not strictly a three chord band which I like, imagine anyone releasing a song criticising middle eastern leaders today, they had serious balls.
Mauro Ito I will admit that London Calling is better than your fucking grammar
My top 3 Punk bands will always be:
3: The Dead Kennedys
2: Slime (german Punk Band)
1: The Sex Pistols (they simply _are_ punk)
Clash should be higher, where are the stranglers and where is green day?
Green Day is not punk.
Floydthefuckbag Yeah they are they are not the hardcore punks they were in the 90's but they are still punk.
Floydthefuckbag Pop-punk which is still punk
Floydthefuckbag The first three Green Day records was punk but not anymore, same with the Offspring
PixelSunTron If you think Green Day was ever anything remotely close to hardcore punk you know nothing about punk.
How can you put Minor Threat just as a honorable mention when you are talking about influence? They were one of the most influential Hardcore bands of the 80s.
Should've been put instead of Social Distortion.
I live for The Clash, the perfect mix of rock, rockabilly, ska and punk.
Just get out there and do it.'""
This is what punk should be about. Having fun even when playing simple, but memorable tunes. It was the perfect response to the progressive and heavy metal music which had become overblown, pretentious and lacked the fun that rock'n'roll once was about. The people arguing about what is punk and what isn't really miss the point.
"were not good enough" Love it, haha.
Stop trying to fucking argue Green Day on this list. They're pop punk and that's it
ok
+wwe2dragon so that's still considered punk music you dumbshit I'm not a Green Day fan but you're stupid
+wwe2dragon While it's true they are now (27 years after) more pop than punk, you'd have to be ignorant not to acknowledge their punk roots.
Phunky Phantom they should at least put 90s green day as an honorable mention, I mean DOOKIE AND INSOMNIAC AND KERPLUNK
NDO55 green day is not punk by any stretch of the imagination and they are the worst band ever
Top 10 Melodic Punk Bands? That would be a good list
yeah the clash would be the best then right
These kids in the comments have no idea what punk is
Shit I was kicking back to Black Flag in the 1500s
I tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, you don't get much more punk than that!
Ajax I'm a kid at 9 and I'm just getting into punk with the sex pistols
Quit crying about Green Day, for the love of christ.
you have no judgement on punk rock GREEN DAY IS THE BEST
@@gregwilson7710 They're not punk. They're shit.
@@Nick-qf7vt though i disagree with you, i respect your opinion
I know Green Day, Sum 41, The Offspring and Blink-182 are not as "punk" as many of the bands here. But I think they deserved to be on the Honorable Mentions (especially Green Day).
They are actually too good to be punk.
Jon Snow Thank God they grew out of this 'punk' shit.
Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Sex Pistols and Bad Brains should always take the top four spots.
It's not like The Ramones influenced them or anything...
That's fine, but they're still much better than The Ramones.
I like DK and Bad Brains, and they should've been put higher but it's talking influence wise.
guess you're right
surprised the descendants didnt make it, milo goes to college is renowned as one of the best punk albums of all time
I want a video about 90s pop punk. Green Day, Blink, NOFX, the offspring. That's the shit right there.
***** nofx is not pop punk and pop punk sucks
***** I personally enjoy it because it's catchy, enjoyable, and the vast majority of songs are somewhat easy to relate to. Not to mention I grew up on it so idk that's just how I was raised.
brock kyelberg Hate to tell you but they are basically pop punk haha.
***** ah yea man i got you
***** aha its all good man
The Exploited?
agreed
Collective facepalm for green day comments. This list is the original punk era. Then came the pop punk of the 90s. Blink 182, green day, etc. This list was definitely accurate.
it says 70's to the 2000's though
Your statement would be true, except NOFX and Rancid are in the honorable mentions, neither of them are from the original punk era.
and technically speaking, the hardcore punk scene is not part of the original era either.
Nice list! I would have changed The Sex Pistols and The Clash as The Sex Pistols really only had 1 album where as The Clash had a bunch more. Still though, can't deny the influence of The Sex Pistols so I really can't complain too much :p Agree with The Ramone's as number 1 though.
10.) The emergency
9.) The leaving trains
8.) Bad Religion
7.) Urge overkill
6.) Dead kennedys
5.) Black flag
4.) The stooges
3.) The Ramones
2.) The clash
1.) The sex pistols
it kinda is sad how Circle Jerks were not mentioned, same with Crass, or the Subhumans....... or the god GG Allin
True, Crass should have been on the list. Also The Germs.
GG probably wasn't on the list because he isn't a band.
this is very true, I should have instead put like, "GG Allin and the Murder Junkies" or something
Watchmojo are obviously nazi punks! how could you not mention crass or subhumans?!
ANTI-FASCISTA
UP THE PUNX
Pennoy999 why would a nazi punk reference DK?
@@cspruce8853 Agreed. Or Black Flag. Or Bad Brains. Or The Clash. Pennoy is a fucking idiot.
No Fugazi? Really?
In my opinion, Green Day didn't make the list because they ALWAYS felt like a mainstream attempt to cash in on the culture revival in the early 90s. They're pop with a punk sound, and if you can't tell the difference, maybe you don't know what punk actually is/was? Just sayin'.
Still, Green Day should have been on this list.
Naw, because they were generally regarded as an "alternative" band before the big pop/punk boom in the 90s.
But they had (and still do, to a certain extent) a very punk-like sound.
green days first two albums were actually full punk, then with the release of dookie they experimented with pop punk. however pop punk is just a sub genre of punk so why not put them as an honorable mention
“Pop with a punk sound” So new wave bands like The Clash. And yes, they are New Wave.
Since The Stooges were mentioned, it would have been more balanced if the MC5 were included.
bpabustan OMG. The MC5 are without a doubt one of the most influential Proto Punk bands of the late 60s. Underrated in my opinion.
no descendents, nofx, the offspring, rise againsy
Rise against is alternative. Nofx is pop punk. Offspring suck anyways,.
listen to rise against first record up to there third, its punk, nofx have pop punk songs but they also got some reallly good raw punk rock music, and although the offspring are shit now there early stuff and im talking first record and up to smash they where great
Eli Engwicht Well, I agree. I have listened to Rise Against's older albums and yes they were punk rock. Talking about NOFX, their new 'raw' music is nowhere a raw as the hardcore punk they made in 80s and early 90s, and is mostly still pop punk.
alright fair enough
Manly because the offspring isn't punk
I'm surprised the Exploited isn't on the list.
I totally agree and there are many more bands missing. G.B.H, Crass, Conflict for example, and some old school like the Buzzcocks and the Adverts.
Yeah and where the fuck are the Oi! bands. I want my AU and Cockney Rejects
The Anti-Nowhere League should have at least gotten an honorable mention.
Rest in peace Muhammad Ali
4:38 "a obscenity trial over an album sleeve." It shows give me convinience or give me death but the album sleave referenced is frankenchrist
few changes need to be made, Sex Pistols put 1st and Green Day on the list.
***** well really its because those guys got me into music because i easily could relate to it, and they ARE punk. they made their mark with dookie and american idiot but then again they aimed with the older ones in this list.
***** .... ah shit i don't really know how to answer that... isn't punk inherently supposed to be bad?
Sex pistols shouldn't be number one and Green day barely counted as punk rock even in the 90's when they were decent.
Green Day has not been influential. They have clearly no legacy. And the producor of the SP had the idea to create a punk band after having seen the Ramones in concert. Ramones inspirated the SP.
Nate Wood Oh god, again with the genre factionalism; you people are worse than religious fundamentalists.
Honestly I prefer Sex Pistols over The Ramones. The Ramones are extremely overrated in my book. My favorite punk band is The Adicts. Wish they would've been in the video but eh it was still a good vid.
No one actually likes The Adicts lol
You can stick to your opinion and ill stick to mine. Thats the beauty of it.
If you are just here for good music, you wouldn't listen to The Adicts lol
Who else thinks the Misfits should be higher on this list? I mean they have more of a cult following and a bigger fan base than the fucking Clash.
The offspring who has the best selling indy record in smash, Sublime with there punk rock reggae style and no doubt the old no doubt.
Couldn’t Reel Big Fish be in there? Or did they not sell enough albums?? I LOVE their music!! Plus they are funny
The jam, The Dead Boys, And of course the Damned, all missing.
and the stranglers!
Pennywise?
Musically, the dead kennedys are suuuuper talented. Trust me, if you were a guitarist you would know
Trevor O'connell I haven't listened much too Dead Kennedys but I might start.
Musically the Pistols weren't that great. But fuck me sideways they just encapsulated everything that was Punk so fucking well.
I think that should be aknowledged at least in the mentions.
green day and offspring weren't punk rock even on there best days.
Nate Wood
The pre-Dookie albums are punk to the point that I can't imagine anyone trying to argue that fact.
the ramones definitely deserve number 1
Lyrically nobody on this list beats The Clash.
The only band that mattered, mate.
+KryptoChronicutelite yessss
+KryptoChronicutelite You literally couldn't have listened to dead kennedys then
Dead kennedys lyrics were far superior
***** threex1 they're my two favorite punk bands for a reason (personally i prefer the clash but that's only because joe strummer kicks ass)
Sorry to say lads and laddies true punk is pretty much dead :(
Offspring is going to put out a new album
True but we have these extreme punk people, might tear it apart lol
Look Up Frank Carter And the Rattlesnakes
Atleast we have post-punk
Iceage
The problem with these lists are you can't say the best 10. All are great but so many more are not listed.
I'm getting sick of her saying "wild antics"
How the fuck is Rancid only an honorable mention.
Agreed.
Bad Religion deserves to be on all lists like this. They've influenced countless punk bands and have remain relevant over 4 different decades. It's nuts.
If you're going to make a top ten punk list and not even mention Green Day or blink-182, you need to stop and re-evaluate.
Calling Green Day or Blink-182 punk is like calling the Spice Girls heavy metal.
So pop punk can't be a genre of punk? Regardless, their earlier stuff is more "punky" by your hipster definition.
I don't know this generation... Sum 41, Blink 182
this is punk not pop punk
Ark Reaper Assassin
i agree i like both bands but they're not true punk
Pop/punk
Ark Reaper Assassin Ramones is pop punk too
i agree, the ramones shouldn't be number 1
I may not agree with the order of your list watchmojo but you didn't forget to list a single punk band that matters, Good on ya
There were a few before like Suzi Quatro and the Runaways and a handful of others, but people like the Slits, Poly Styrene, and Siouxsie (yes, the Banshees were a punk band) changed a lot of attitudes about women in music, and both pre-dated and inspired the 90s riot grrrl movement
I might also have not included Iggy & the Stooges.
The Joy Division was very punk rock only when they called Warsaw
The Clash deserve to be number 1, Dead Kennedys should be higher than Black Flag and Buzzcocks should have been in the honourable mentions.
There are few things dumber than arguing about who belongs in amusic sub-genres. I love music no matter what the genre or uniform.
IMO Sex pistols should be first, their influence was much bigger, than the Ramones's ;p Ramones introduced leather jackets into punk-rockers, while Sex pistols introduced whole behaviour of punks
The ramones were a band before the Sex Pistols were. Theres no debate here.
The Sex Pistols, the fist no talent, manager made, boy band. Malcolm McLauren sorta started it all.
McLauren was the New York Dolls Manager before the sex pistols and its already well documented that the Sex Pistols were this made up band that McLauren put together.
Exactly my point.
Sex Pistols was influenced by Ramones.
Where the fuck is The Offspring? -.-
fuck your poser fake punk shit band!
Lol. Even the guy with the shitty Joker agrees with me
Ah, you are those "true" punk badasses.
Joker3589 It means so little that you had to reply to my comment xD
Hey Watchmojo, how about doing a top 10 best bands to skateboard to!!! This would include hip hop, punk, hardcore and regular rock! I just have to say first that I have played the Skate video game while listening to early Van Halen cds and it goes REALLY well with skateboarding video games!!! Seriously!
I couldn't find Green Day I searched and searched...
They woulda been on the list if they didn't sell out and go all mainstream alt.
Then search in pop rock, maybe?
Not punk
Green Day is Pop Punk not Punk
Rancid, The Exploited, Nofx and Anti-Flag deserve their places
I really love Fishbone. They toured with the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers, so they weren't low level.
Bad Religion should be higher. And The Sex Pistols being ahead of The Clash seems like a sick joke.
I am watching all the mojo lists just to learn how many times they have fucked everything up.........
I'm glad someone finally recognized Social Distortion
Right, I respect the ones that came before but social d I can connect to bc of mikes lyrics, there real and pure
can you make a countdown of best current hardcore/metalcore/punkrock bands
I would expect that in that list it should include Hatebreed, Hellyeah, and maybe POD
Social Distortion beat Misfits? I call bullshit. In fact it's bullshit that Misfits aren't in the top 5
"..made the punk attitude mainstream." Irony!!!!
The clash is the best they will always have a place in my heart thanks Dad #RIPjoe
IMO 1 and 2 should be reversed, but than again, I'm European.
The band that didn't quite make it onto this list is HeadAche, but this is perhaps given that they formed after this video was uploaded. Search up "Prisoner - HeadAche (Official Audio Video)". You'll see what I mean
MINOR THREAT?!??!?
