No three piece rock group has ever sounded as full as Rush can live. All of the multitasking these guys do, and do it for a three hour show! They’re just amazing to see live, though it is very difficult to know who to watch. It is amazing that they can play multiple instruments, playing pedal keyboards with their feet while still playing some of the most complex riffs on their main instruments. No other group has their work ethic or works harder to deliver a near perfect musical performance live and that alone should win them the top spot. Good job Watch Mojo!

Led Floyd Idk I mean Rush is in the hollywood walk of fame, canadian walk of fame, rock and roll hall of fame and Canadian music hall of fame. They lasted over 40 years. They have sold 40 million records compared to cream's 15.They have the third highest streak of platinum selling albums (only beaten by the stones and Beatles and that's huge). If you don't agree with that, well musically Rush is more experimental and their music more complex, plus they are more versatile changing with the times. They are among the most talented trios (cream also but Geddy Lee plays the piano, bass and sings all by himself) with Geddy being considered one of the greatest bassist and praised for his vocals.Neil Peart is the considered the second best drummer of all time after Bonham. But don't get me wrong I love cream (they are also in rnr hall of fame and have one of the greatest guitarist/bassist/drummer) but I think watchmojo got it right by putting Rush at number one.
1 Green Day are alt-rock 2 Nirvana is punk What does grunge even mean other than 90's rock bands out of Seattle? Otherwise I wouldn't put Mudhoney, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in the same category.
The Police is way above any band in this list. They are god-tier fusing hard rock, punk rock, reggae, ska, jazz, classical music, pop in all their songs at popularized the music industry with their number 1 hits.
eddie lasowsky How many albums did nirvana make? If Kurt Cobain doesn't kill himself you never would even remember them by now . Killing ones self doesn't get a free pass to greatest trio's ever . Triumph should be on the list over nirvana .
I was getting sort of mad when Rush was not listed but then you put them as #1. It's about time that Rush got the acclaim they deserve. All three are masters of their craft.
My Picks 1. Rush 2. Nirvana 3. Primus 4. Green Day 5. Muse 6. ZZ Top 7. The Police 8. Them Crooked Vultures 9. Sublime 10. Blink-182 Honourable Mentions - Cream - Emerson, Lake & Palmer - The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Motörhead
I think Blink deserves more than honourable mention. Maybe not number one, but still. I mean, how many people flipped their shit when they announced they were reuniting?
I think you also need to look at how influential each trio was. Jimi Hendrix did things that had never been done. His influence has lasted 50 years. Are You Experienced blew everything else away. Cream would be #2. They were also very influential as one of the first bands to really feature great instrumental talent.
Though Thin Lizzy started out as a trio their iconic sound was done as a four piece, first rock band 2 use double lead guitars and influenced bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
Purely subjective, so not saying this is definite, obviously: 1. Cream (One of the greatest rock bands of all time, IMO) 2. Jimi Hendrix Experience 3. Rush 4. -Wolfmother- Muse 5. -Muse- Wolfmother 6. Radio Moscow 7. -Them Crooked Vultures- Crosby, Stills, and Nash 8. -Nirvana- Them Crooked Vultures 9. -Green Day- Sublime 10. -Sublime- Green Day I switched a few around and brought some off that just don't do it for me.
Justin Letcavage I agree with all of that except take Muse (good band but not one of the greatest) and Green Day off, move Nirvana up to the top 5. Cream is definitely the best 3 piece of all time though.

The only thing I can think to keep Nirvana out of the top 3 would be length of run. Unfortunately Nirvana's was cut short, but I believe the fact they were iconic for a generation should boast them.
Muse should be number 1. they are only 3, but they still play every kind music from classical to electronic and so on. they also mix it togheter in some songs.
Rush plays: Progressive rock Hard rock Rock n Roll Electronic(ish) rock Psychedelic rock Classical Progressive Metal Hell, they've even done rap for a good 2 minutes in one song, and it was better than the majority of rap that's being released today. What were you saying?
+Omer Carmona That comment just shows how fucking ignorant you are. Anyone with half a brain for music could tell you that these are all completely different genres. They all sound drastically different, and all require a completely different style of playing.
+Omer Carmona They never stopped being an influence. They really took off in the mid 70's and early 80's, and they haven't stopped or slowed since. (Save for the tragedy that occurred in the late 90's) The 70's, 80's, and 90's weren't that long ago O Smart One. You were probably born in one of those decades.
Lesser known, but nonetheless had their own kick-ass brand of rock and roll: ( In no particular order ): Beck , Bogert & Appice; Rory Gallagher; Brownsville Station; The James Gang, Mountain, and Robin Trower. I know Rory Gallagher was a quartet for part of the time, but he did a lot of great work in a trio....

I was just waiting for Rush. I really wanted them to be #1 and I got what I wanted 😂 also I’m pleasantly surprised that they pronounced Neil Peart’s name correctly.
I feel like Blink-182 should have made the list, even if they were near the bottom. They dominated their era of the early 2000's as far as rock bands go, more so than some of the bands near the bottom of this list
Dear Mojo, not only because the bands are classic means they're good. I've respect for those bands but putting Muse in number 6 and bands like The Police and Rush in a higher category was just an act of ignorancy.
I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in this list. A Rock Trio needs to be a trio from beginning to end, thus validating their recognition as a Rock Trio !!! Muze has an additional player live, Moterhead had 4 members for awhile, etc. With that said,.....here is the REAL TOP ROCK TRIOS OF ALL TIME !!! #1 RUSH (You nailed this one because it is a no brainer) #2 The Police ( See above) #3 Jimi Hendrix Experience (Superstars) #4 Primus (next to Rush they have the greatest playing ability, but they dropped too much Acid) #5 ELP (Prog Rock Pioneers) #6 Triumph ( If it wasnt for Rush would we have them at number 1 ?) #7 Cream ( way overlooked) #8 Green Day (Super punk rock sound) #9 ZZ TOP (Great Bluesy rock sound with a FEW twists) #10 (TIE) Nirvana (Great and real bad) #10 (TIE) Sublime (Never knew they were a 3 piece ???) Honorable Mention.........Muze, IF they could reproduce live with only 3 players !???
Yeah clearly shows how much you understand seeing as how Green Day clearly have a fourth man involved, who you can even see in this very video. And anyways I don't think you get to decide what a "trio" means. Muse's additional "player"(since he isn't a member) didn't join the band until about 2006, and even afterwards has had no input on their actual music. Not to mention relatively few songs of theirs actually require another person, those that do mostly being from The 2nd Law. And even then it's mostly their choice so they can play everything completely live. I can almost guarantee you that a large number of "real trios" use backing tracks while playing live in order to recreate their music. Same thing, really.
But they cant produce live without him or they would leave him at home, and if they could I might slide them in at #8 or 9 but no higher. Having an extra musician play live and doing it yourself by triggering samples yourself in time and playing keyboards with your feet (RUSH) is NOT the same. If any band ever had an excuse to bring an extra musician on the road, it would be Rush. Muse is good as pop rock songwriters (from what Ive heard) but not super musicians. Just good.
This is like the first time a watchmojo list's number 1 hasn't been complete and utter bullcrap... whether you agree with it or not at least it's a good band
This is going WAY back, but Buddy Holly and the Crickets were a pretty decent trio in their day. It was mostly due to Buddy Holly. He essentially played rhythm and lead while singing lead.
jfl125 "Rush will no doubt be on top in any Rock Trio list" No offense, but what universe do you live in? Nirvana, Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience make most lists of the greatest artists in popular music EVER. Not just specific lists like greatest rock bands or even greatest rock trio. Rush... not so much.
Rush is extremely overlooked and underrated in the Rock scene. For some reason they are only looked at in the specifics of the Rock trio scene. Not to say that any of your examples are bad, but certain names always get more attention. Like you said, the Jimi Hendrix Experience make many lists of music. In my opinion, Rush deserves to hold as big of a name as any of the former examples, but they don't. They're not thought of in that light; they have never been looked at by the mainstream as one of the greats.
Na ja ... Schon mal was von "STRAY CATS" gehört? "THE PIRATES"? / THE JAM!!! / HÜSKER DÜ / SOFT MACHINE / BEASTIE BOYS / VIOLET FEMMES / BLUE CHEER / THIN LIZZY ...
Beastie Boys started out as a punk band, then evolved and incorporated numerous different musical styles over the years. And "Sabotage" is about as punk as you can get.
My top 10 trio bands are: 10 Jimi Hendrix Experience 9 ZZ top 8 Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsys 7 Cream 6 Primus 5 Motörhead 4 The Nice 3 Nirvana 2 Rush 1 Emerson Lake and Palmer
Woo Rush 1st, Police 2nd and you pronounced Neil's last name correctly, good on ya Mojo. Now do a top 10 Rush, if that's even possible. For those saying Rush suck and don't release good music anymore have a listen to The Garden from Clockwork Angels, released in 2012
I did what you said, listen to the Garden from Clockwork Angels. If they (Rush) came out with that (In their day), what do you think would have happened?
Rush holds third place for the most consecutive gold records, only trailing The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Anyone claiming that they suck are just showing their ignorance of rock music and history. Few groups have remained together with the same musicians for more than 40 years. Up until the day they retired, they were still selling out arenas around the world. Very few other groups have been able to do that. Even after they took a five year sabbatical from music entirely, they came back with a first world tour and managed to sell out every show. Not many other groups on this list can accomplish that. Even if you don’t care for their music, you have to give respect to any group who can accomplish the things they have. Rush has always been more of a musician’s musicians anyway. Much of their following are made up of musicians who can appreciate the complexity of their compositions. That is why all three musicians in the group have won top honors on their respective instrument, especially within publications where musicians do most of the voting. Both Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson have won best guitarist and bassist so many years in Guitar Player Magazine that they were retired to the Hall Of Fame for the publication. Neil Peart pretty much ruled in the pages of Modern Drummer, even writing articles for the magazine and also being retired to their HOF. There are very few drummers in the business who don’t rank Peart among the best drummers in rock history. I think that Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins made this quite clear when they inducted Rush into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Many people today rank Dave Grohl as the best drummer of his era, yet even Dave makes it no secret that one of his idols is Peart. Anyone claiming that Rush sucks at this point is only making a fool of themselves, given all of the accolades this group has been endowed with over the years. Just as Kirk Hammet claimed in the documentary “Beyond The Lighted Stage”, “how can three guys make such a sound?”. This, and this reason alone makes them the top pick for this list. Love them or hate them, no three piece rock group has ever had such a full sound as Rush can produce live. Anyone who has ever been to one of their concerts knows this.
Trios are definetley some of the best! In big bands some members(Mostly bassists, and sometimes drummers) are sometimes forgotten but in trios eveybody gets the cred they deserve!:)
Rush at number 1 is indeed the correct choice. No trio band could ever or will ever hold up to the awesomeness of Rush.

Can't believe TRIUMPH didn't make the list
1 green day are punk
2 nirvana is grunge
1 Green Day are alt-rock
2 Nirvana is punk
What does grunge even mean other than 90's rock bands out of Seattle? Otherwise I wouldn't put Mudhoney, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in the same category.
Robert Scythe Nirvana is grunge mate...
Even Cobain called Nirvana a punk band. I agree with him.
it's aidan what does this comment even mean
The Police is way above any band in this list. They are god-tier fusing hard rock, punk rock, reggae, ska, jazz, classical music, pop in all their songs at popularized the music industry with their number 1 hits.
I still ENJOY listening to NIRVANA & GREEN DAY. Those bands are LEGENDS!!!!
Jamal Sampson IKR!
You can't really compare Green Day to Nirvana. Green Day are ok but they're not anything beyond that. Nirvana are definitely legendary though.
They are both shit.
fuck you, green day is nothing compare to nirvana
toffeebomb thats why greenday is in the rock hall of fame and is one of the best american rock bands
Nirvana should have been number one.
No , they got it right . Rush is definitely number one hands down.
Randy Jones
Nah, overblown bullshit prog rock.
eddie lasowsky I'm sure whoever you like best is bullshit too.
eddie lasowsky How many albums did nirvana make? If Kurt Cobain doesn't kill himself you never would even remember them by now . Killing ones self doesn't get a free pass to greatest trio's ever . Triumph should be on the list over nirvana .
Randy Jones
That is a remarkably stupid thing to say, bravo!
I was getting sort of mad when Rush was not listed but then you put them as #1. It's about time that Rush got the acclaim they deserve. All three are masters of their craft.
My Picks
1. Rush
2. Nirvana
3. Primus
4. Green Day
5. Muse
6. ZZ Top
7. The Police
8. Them Crooked Vultures
9. Sublime
10. Blink-182
Honourable Mentions
- Cream
- Emerson, Lake & Palmer
- The Jimi Hendrix Experience
- Motörhead
Andrew Pappas sublime is so underrated
Your honorable mentions are better than whole final list.
Blink-182 is only in the honorable mentions?? That's a crime!
3. Green Day
2. Muse
1. Nirvana
wow you got my 3 favourite bands
NLBeast117 Ever heard of an opinion?
1. Rush
3562. Green Day
awwww did butt hurt little hater delete his comment?
Um. NO
I LOOOOOVE how Motorhead and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer both ranked ABOVE Primus, Blink182, and Blue Cheer
King's X. One of my all-time favorite bands. Superb song crafting and musicianship.
I think Blink deserves more than honourable mention. Maybe not number one, but still. I mean, how many people flipped their shit when they announced they were reuniting?
I agree completely!

Donna Groussman yeah but there still making music and still touring !
I know so do the stones
Why is Rush number one on this list and Blink 182 not even in the top 10
I think you also need to look at how influential each trio was. Jimi Hendrix did things that had never been done. His influence has lasted 50 years. Are You Experienced blew everything else away. Cream would be #2. They were also very influential as one of the first bands to really feature great instrumental talent.
how come nirvana is only number 4
You really shouldn't complain, they're lucky to even have 4. Don't get me wrong I love Nirvana but putting them above Cream is just ridiculous.
I think the top five should have been:
5. The Police
4. Nirvana
3. Cream
2. Jimi Hendrix
1. Rush
Because the bands ahead of them were way better. Would you put Nirvana (who I love btw) ahead of Rush?!
@@gregdietz5183 fuck no! Rush is the greatest rock trio, and greatest Canadian rock band ever!
@@darthwolf2592 my top five as well. Excellent list!
Primus didn't get a number.
:(
I was thinking that too.
😕
Primus sucks
what the heck i came here for primus
#1-Rush
#2-Nirvana
#3- Jimi Hendrix Experience
The fact that Grand Funk Railroad wasn’t even mentioned is a crime
GFR the original rock power trio.
Absolutely mind blowing that Primus is only an honorable mention
Blue Cheer, Budgie, Grand Funk Railroad, James Gang, and Thin Lizzy
enfelice Yes they are all amazing but sadly all underrated and I guess will always be overshadowed by Green Day and Blink
Though Thin Lizzy started out as a trio their iconic sound was done as a four piece, first rock band 2 use double lead guitars and influenced bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.
Back in the day GFR sold out stadiums faster than other bands incl the Beatles and where the only band to have Led Zep booed off the stage.
Purely subjective, so not saying this is definite, obviously:
1. Cream (One of the greatest rock bands of all time, IMO)
2. Jimi Hendrix Experience
3. Rush
4. -Wolfmother- Muse
5. -Muse- Wolfmother
6. Radio Moscow
7. -Them Crooked Vultures- Crosby, Stills, and Nash
8. -Nirvana- Them Crooked Vultures
9. -Green Day- Sublime
10. -Sublime- Green Day
I switched a few around and brought some off that just don't do it for me.
Who's cream
Lukas Evans Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and Ginger Baker. They were a psychadelic/blues rock band from the late 60's.
Eric Clapton sounds familiar did he go solo eventually
Lukas Evans Yep, and he had a little stint with Derek and the Dominos too. You may have heard their biggest hit Layla before.
Justin Letcavage I agree with all of that except take Muse (good band but not one of the greatest) and Green Day off, move Nirvana up to the top 5. Cream is definitely the best 3 piece of all time though.
(Before Watching)My Top 5:
Rush
Nirvana
Green day
Muse
Cream
Fuck Nirvana dude
My favorite trios in rock are Nirvana, Green Day, Primus.

Greendayfan1896 umm yes they r they have always had Jason white in the 2000s but he is not a permanent member just used when he is needed on songs like 21 guns
The only thing I can think to keep Nirvana out of the top 3 would be length of run. Unfortunately Nirvana's was cut short, but I believe the fact they were iconic for a generation should boast them.
Why is green day so high up? They should be around nirvana somewhere..
Nah, I would've though that either Sublime or Blink 182 would have made it on the list though. I don't think Green Day should be in the top 5.
no mention of Triumph? Love Rush at #1 though!
Let’s not downplay the fact that The Police were one of Neil Pearts inspirations
Him and Stewart Copeland were good friends and would sometimes jam together.
Blink should have made it on the list no question.

Muse should be number 1.
they are only 3, but they still play every kind music from classical to electronic and so on. they also mix it togheter in some songs.
Rush plays:
Progressive rock
Hard rock
Rock n Roll
Electronic(ish) rock
Psychedelic rock
Classical
Progressive Metal
Hell, they've even done rap for a good 2 minutes in one song, and it was better than the majority of rap that's being released today. What were you saying?
Plus Rush is just an all around good band and extremely difficult to play on guitar and bass and drums
+JayTFilms so, Rush mix rock with more rock ? whoa they where really an influence to dinosaurs...
You were probably born in one of those decades.
my top 5:
1. Rush
2. Cream
3. Motorhead
4. Muse
5. Triumph
"Taste" was trio. Motly they were based on "Cream" experience - even in their title. Which does not make them any worse
5. blink-182
4. Green Day
3. Silverchair
2. Rush
1. Cream
How did primus not make the list
They got an honorable mention tho

I was just waiting for Rush. I really wanted them to be #1 and I got what I wanted 😂 also I’m pleasantly surprised that they pronounced Neil Peart’s name correctly.
I feel like Blink-182 should have made the list, even if they were near the bottom. They dominated their era of the early 2000's as far as rock bands go, more so than some of the bands near the bottom of this list
Dear Mojo, not only because the bands are classic means they're good. I've respect for those bands but putting Muse in number 6 and bands like The Police and Rush in a higher category was just an act of ignorancy.
Thank you!
Muse lost all their credibility with that shitty dubstep bullshit

I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in this list. A Rock Trio needs to be a trio from beginning to end, thus validating their recognition as a Rock Trio !!! Muze has an additional player live, Moterhead had 4 members for awhile, etc. With that said,.....here is the REAL TOP ROCK TRIOS OF ALL TIME !!!
#1 RUSH (You nailed this one because it is a no brainer)
#2 The Police ( See above)
#3 Jimi Hendrix Experience (Superstars)
#4 Primus (next to Rush they have the greatest playing ability, but they dropped too much Acid)
#5 ELP (Prog Rock Pioneers)
#6 Triumph ( If it wasnt for Rush would we have them at number 1 ?)
#7 Cream ( way overlooked)
#8 Green Day (Super punk rock sound)
#9 ZZ TOP (Great Bluesy rock sound with a FEW twists)
#10 (TIE) Nirvana (Great and real bad)
#10 (TIE) Sublime (Never knew they were a 3 piece ???)
Honorable Mention.........Muze, IF they could reproduce live with only 3 players !???
green day actually has a 4th member as well. he usually appears in music videos and is always just offstage when they play live.
MUSE, actually. With an S
I like this list.
Just good.
rush better be #1
Agree with Rush at the top, glad to see King's X get some love though I know they are not as well known as they should be...
Rush and Cream are easily the best power trios, no question.
This is like the first time a watchmojo list's number 1 hasn't been complete and utter bullcrap... whether you agree with it or not at least it's a good band
yup

I'm happy Rush made #1 on the list! (And I also like that Them Crooked Vultures got an honorable mention!)

@@scottzink415 and why is that
This is going WAY back, but Buddy Holly and the Crickets were a pretty decent trio in their day. It was mostly due to Buddy Holly. He essentially played rhythm and lead while singing lead.
Bang on. Rush normally go un-noticed as they are such an underrated band. This is a superb list! Perhaps would have placed Muse higher though/
Let's be honest. People specifically make top ten trio lists just so they can make Rush number 1. Rush will no doubt be on top in any Rock Trio list.
jfl125 "Rush will no doubt be on top in any Rock Trio list"
No offense, but what universe do you live in?
They're not thought of in that light; they have never been looked at by the mainstream as one of the greats.
all good bands but wrong order....i do agree rush number 1

Thin Lizzy for sure because of their influence on music today and probably most the musicians on the list.
My top 10 trio bands are:

Haha no you're not alone thinking that way...
Nah, you're not; there are a ton of tasteless fuckwits in the world :D
Even if you don't like Nirvana, you can't deny their influence on practically all modern rock bands today.
Nirvana is one of my favourite bands, but i think it's overrated too :P
I'm in same boat with you. Even as kid of 90's I can't see what's so great about them.
Woo Rush 1st, Police 2nd and you pronounced Neil's last name correctly, good on ya Mojo. Now do a top 10 Rush, if that's even possible. For those saying Rush suck and don't release good music anymore have a listen to The Garden from Clockwork Angels, released in 2012
Placebo deserve an honourable mention at least, my only gripe with this list.
I did what you said, listen to the Garden from Clockwork Angels. If they (Rush) came out with that (In their day), what do you think would have happened?
Well come on. They invented trios in rock
They wrote plenty of songs like that in their heyday...Tears, Different Strings, Closer to the Heart
You know what is amazing of trio bands? That they sound just as good as an entire Orchesta with just 3 members.
Trios are definetley some of the best! In big bands some members(Mostly bassists, and sometimes drummers) are sometimes forgotten but in trios eveybody gets the cred they deserve!:)
