weasel3k The Pumpkins were my favorite band for about 2-3 years when Mellon Collie came out, and I still listen to them once in a while. I still get sucked into their music because it is so hypnotic. Not only did they make one of the most successful double albums of all time, they helped define what 90s Alternative Rock became...Not to include them in this list, and include other crap bands (some were 1-hit-wonders) is blasphemy. I may have been a touch harsh in my thoughts but I don't know what it is, Radiohead and especially Thom Yorke really grates on my ears and eye's, I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but it's God awful I can't engage at all. It's not a problem I have with any other group, except maybe milli vanilli, Thompson twins couldn't stand and maybe Kajagoogoo.

Also, just as a point of...logic(?), the Strokes essentially have one major hit single, so their impact compared to the Pumpkins, or even groups on the list I dislike, is minimal.

I feel like The Velvet Underground doesn't count as an alternative band despite being highly influential in the genre. On the other hand, punk rock, post-punk and new wave could enter this list because they are directly the forerunners of alternative rock and all its sub-genres.
Radiohead's first two albums were great... After that, too much wandering around-art rock, which might still be 'alternative', but isn't as, you know...'good'. Even worse (for me) is their concerts are just endless guitar noodlings...I felt like I was at a Phish concert (to be clear, that is not a compliment). So, top 50, sure, but I can name at LEAST 25-40 groups more influential, better, more enduring. Now the Smiths not making the top ten...and I'm not a huge fan by any means, but how they got beat out by Radiohead, the White Stripes and Red Hot Chili Peppers is beyond comprehension. This was a poor list.
Right let's be honest Nirvana didn't necessarily do anything with their music that the Pixies hadn't already done in the years prior. Nirvana just added a bit more emotion to their music whereas Pixies were much more enigmatic with their tone.

Sorry but Radiohead is by far better than Nirvana. Nirvana is really good, but without Cobain's attitude it wouldn't be so famous. Radiohead is THE ALTERNATIVENESS in itself (btw, you shouldn't show over and over again the 3-4 most commercial songs from RH, there are some really (I mean, really) alternative albums just like Hail to the Thief or Amnesiac, bro's, You are talking about alternative music...)

Nirvana did invent the grunge sound FYI. Smells Like Teen Spirit was the first grunge song to hit the mainstream. And at least Eddie didn't blow his brains out because he couldn't kick heroin and was falling from fame. Also VS and Ten were perfect albums so what's your point?
Once upon a time a young band from Ireland were big on college radio and alternative and new wave stations. They became the biggest band in the world. Today they are hated but what they did was bigger than any other alternative band ever.

I grew up in the 80s and only got to know them in 2012! Why? New Order is the 80s, Joy Division maybe had some 80s, but ended too early. Unless one had an older sibling already into JD, then it's likely NO would be the band one would know.

No, actually Nirvana one of the classic icons of the alternative subculture (they claimed to be a copy of Pixies, the band that popularized the standard alternative rock structure), and that's because Grunge is just alternative rock with primary influences from noise rock and to a lesser extent punk and metal (depending on the band).
Joy Division should've been on this list, or at least given an honorable mention. They're arguably the definitive post punk band, and have influenced a huge number of artists. Plus they went on to become New Order after Ian Curtis died, and New Order is also massively influential. Pixies should've been mentioned too, as well as Velvet Underground. The Cure are a little too high on this list. I'm a big Clash fan, but the Ramones were the ones that really started punk as a genre.
The Maniac King New Wave is a big genre asshole! A genre that includes synth pop, dark wave, new romantics, post punk and etc. New Wave just means the generation of musicians from England around the late 70s and 80s that emerged in the scene. Everything from Joy Division to Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to The Smiths is New Wave. They are NOT alternative and certainly not in the sense that "alternative" was defined after.

I really think green day deserved to be ranked, they have influenced so many bands, and have been VERY original, but lets get real, Ramones easily deserved to be top 5, without them you wouldnt have most "new" punk bands

I can definitely understand where you guys are coming from, but Green Day was most definitely more punk than alternative (not saying they are a one trick pony), but they aren't a mix up a mix up or of styles other than garage punk. Don't get me wrong though, i love Green Day.

Thank you. Mike hit the nail on the head with the Strokes and Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to Is This It nearly every day for a decade and I still love that record. It's just perfect. Room on Fire is pretty damn close as well and every other album they have made is worth the price paid by far. I can't believe they included freaking Depeche Mode on this list. Ugh. People suck.
That's it, someone is dying. How could you not include The PIxies? They were a massive direct influence on Radiohead and Nirvana (amongst other bands) and influence many, many, MANY more indirectly. Their sound is so unique, original and emotional, it is indescribable. Honestly every single song on Surfer Rosa affects me deeply. Caribou just echoes through my entire consciousness and makes me feel so alive, so creative and so passionate about music; listening and creating.
I have no problem with Nirvana at number one, they are one of my all time favorite bands. But this list could have bands like Garbage, The Melvins, Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, The Cars, and so many more there’s really not enough room. I’m Just happy that it happened in my life and I’ve been here to enjoy all the great Music.

I may have been a touch harsh in my thoughts but I don't know what it is, Radiohead and especially Thom Yorke really grates on my ears and eye's, I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but it's God awful I can't engage at all. It's not a problem I have with any other group, except maybe milli vanilli, Thompson twins couldn't stand and maybe Kajagoogoo.

Radiohead's first two albums were great...
After that, too much wandering around-art rock, which might still be 'alternative', but isn't as, you know...'good'. Even worse (for me) is their concerts are just endless guitar noodlings...I felt like I was at a Phish concert (to be clear, that is not a compliment). So, top 50, sure, but I can name at LEAST 25-40 groups more influential, better, more enduring.
Now the Smiths not making the top ten...and I'm not a huge fan by any means, but how they got beat out by Radiohead, the White Stripes and Red Hot Chili Peppers is beyond comprehension.

I grew up in the 80s and only got to know them in 2012! Why? New Order is the 80s, Joy Division maybe had some 80s, but ended too early. Unless one had an older sibling already into JD, then it's likely NO would be the band one would know.

No, actually Nirvana one of the classic icons of the alternative subculture (they claimed to be a copy of Pixies, the band that popularized the standard alternative rock structure), and that's because Grunge is just alternative rock with primary influences from noise rock and to a lesser extent punk and metal (depending on the band).

Joy Division should've been on this list, or at least given an honorable mention. They're arguably the definitive post punk band, and have influenced a huge number of artists. Plus they went on to become New Order after Ian Curtis died, and New Order is also massively influential. Pixies should've been mentioned too, as well as Velvet Underground. The Cure are a little too high on this list. I'm a big Clash fan, but the Ramones were the ones that really started punk as a genre.

A genre that includes synth pop, dark wave, new romantics, post punk and etc. New Wave just means the generation of musicians from England around the late 70s and 80s that emerged in the scene. Everything from Joy Division to Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to The Smiths is New Wave. They are NOT alternative and certainly not in the sense that "alternative" was defined after.

I can definitely understand where you guys are coming from, but Green Day was most definitely more punk than alternative (not saying they are a one trick pony), but they aren't a mix up a mix up or of styles other than garage punk. Don't get me wrong though, i love Green Day.

Thank you. Mike hit the nail on the head with the Strokes and Smashing Pumpkins. I listened to Is This It nearly every day for a decade and I still love that record. It's just perfect. Room on Fire is pretty damn close as well and every other album they have made is worth the price paid by far. I can't believe they included freaking Depeche Mode on this list. Ugh. People suck.

That's it, someone is dying. How could you not include The PIxies? They were a massive direct influence on Radiohead and Nirvana (amongst other bands) and influence many, many, MANY more indirectly. Their sound is so unique, original and emotional, it is indescribable. Honestly every single song on Surfer Rosa affects me deeply. Caribou just echoes through my entire consciousness and makes me feel so alive, so creative and so passionate about music; listening and creating.
