The Complete Guide to Growing Avocados

  • To make avocados grow you need to do 4 things:
    1. Plant a Seedling
    2. Graft the seedling (Here's why: • Should I Graft My Avoc... )
    3. Plant in the ground in the right climate zone
    4. Pollinate your trees
    This video tells you everything you need to know about the 4 elements. (I accidentally reversed afternoon and morning on the pollination vid but the concept remains the same you need a mix)
    If you want to buy a tree or some clippings (scion) to try your hand at grafting go to: www.guacfarm.com

    My 20 foot avocado trees in South FL took 7 years to produce. Had a pretty bad freeze one year that I thought killed them but they grew back from the ground up and had several trunks grow back. I had planted flowering trees next to them so the bees that loved the flowers also pollinated the avocados as they flowered around the same time. Seems to work like a charm. All grown from seed.

      Plants are a lot more resilient than we think, we have a very hot climate here during the summer the winter months vary from hot to about 25° in winter, I have had plants that look pretty dead , I think, but I wait to now when it's cooler them cut them back and see what happens. Some have recovered others not. I have had an avocodo seed planned for nearly 6 months, just last week it popped up and now it's getting leaves, I can't tell you how happy this makes me every time I plant something and it grows.

      I just had basically the exact same scenario this year. My biggest avocado tree I grew from a seed from a large smooth avocado roughly seven years ago. It’s now about 17 feet tall. I’ve topped it twice. It’s a robust tree with thick branches and giant leaves. It’s got nice size avocado’s on it now for the first time that look really nice. I had two smaller potted grafted trees that started blooming at the same time in February. I placed them close to the big tree and the bees loved it. Now beautiful avocados

    My father was great at grafting. After tying the graft together with cotton thread he melted down beeswax and coated over graft. We had plenty of beeswax due to several bee hives.

    Recently, I started growing a seedling - not because I want fruit, it truly was because I was bored and curious. And now I’m doing all this research. And now I’m attached to my dumb plant. I even named him. I don’t think I could graft something on to Benny. It’s like replacing my child. Maybe I’ll grow another seedling and refuse to get attached so I can clone a stranger to it. 😂

      Southpaw, thanks for the comment and good luck with getting your seed to sprout. Mother nature can be funny, you plant the same exact thing right next to each other, care for it the same way, and one grows and the other doesn't. You'll get one to sprout if you keep trying.

    I had to pause the video to let you know that I already planned to do what you are talking about here! I just told my wife that she should contact you to find out about how to get scion cuttings to graft onto root stock I grow here in Arizona. But, I have a twist that makes it even easier!
    I plant my seeds directly in the ground. No transplanting needed! The disadvantage is that I have planted maybe a hundred or two-hundred seeds this way, and only got one to grow. But, I did get one to grow! Then an unprecedented hard winter withered it. (5 frosts -- 3 were hard frosts -- and 3 times we got snow! In Tucson, Arizona?!?)
    But, it grew! My neighbor brought me 4 plants in 1 gallon pots that I transplanted with no success. While I knew you put the belly button down, I did not know you do not cover it over fully! I cannot wait to try again.
    I like direct sowing because whatever actually grows must be genetically happy with my yard, right? I am so lovin' it!
    Also, I think of it like handing out fliers for a business; it's a number's game. What's the down side? You have to eat a lot of avocados! So, of course, there is no downside!

She is 2' 11/2" tall, I started growing her last Spring, and when we had the Artic Blast come through, I kept her in my garage, and now with it being warmer, my brother felt it was time for her to venture out, so I sat her on the south side of the front yard against our fence, and she is doing great.. I just wanted to thank you for helping me by your video... When at what height or age should I transplant her from her Juvenile Pot 6" across to a larger one.. Great video! I live in the Pacific NW (8b) and hope to grow some cold-hardy avocadoes as that is a staple in our home! I got a ton of very useful information from this video- especially regarding type A and type B plants. Thank you!!
    We are also beekeepers, so hopefully, they will take care of pollination...I did want to mention that all pollinating bees are "she", not "he" (your terrific animation referred to the bees as "he"). Hives are 90% female workers. There is typically 1 queen and about 10% of the population are male drones...but they do not collect pollen, nectar,...nor do they sting. They certainly have their useful contribution to the hive, but not to farmers looking for pollination. :)

      I wish we had some of the varieties you have. Im growing 4 varieties and just started grafting. Is it possible to graft an A type and a B type to the same root stock.

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@frasercoastfoodforest3092 Yes. You can graft multiple varieties to the same rootstock and create a tree that gives different types of avocados. The flowering type doesn't matter you can mix A and B. I've yet to see it with my own eyes but everything I've read says you can successfully graft 4 varieties onto the same tree.
      I'm very grateful to live in this part of the world. A lot of avocado and mango varieties originated in South Florida. Australia looks like a pretty nice place too! Imma check out some of your vids.

    • @SleepyLizard

    So cool! I had never heard of grafting before :) think I’ll wait for my seedling to grow more until January and look for a good tree to do the graft with - I’m totally new to gardening sand this is all so fascinating to me. I wonder: does that work for mango trees too? I have a cute mango seedling I’m nursing back to life (my neighbor let the poor thing dry out lol) and I’m thinking grafting would do it good... and what if the graft isn’t quite from the same variety of the seedling? Do we get like a hybrid fruit?

    • @SleepyLizard
      @SleepyLizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sarolia, yes we graft our seedlings when the diameter is close to the width of a pencil. You mentioned you location in another comment and i'm confident you'll be able to find a tree to graft from.
      As for mango, yes grafting works but unlike avocado some varieties of mango produce polyembryonic seeds which give you seedlings that grow "true from seed" which means grafting is not necessary, you will get the exact same fruit. Or, if your variety is not polyembryonic you can graft onto it.
      As for your question about variety the answer is no, you can graft any type of mango onto a seedling grown from any mango seed. The fact is, excluding polyembryonic varieties a seeding grown from seed isn't really a "type" of mango...it is a mix of the DNA from the mother tree and the other tree that fertilized it. The same holds true for avocado.
      Regarding what you get, no you don't get a hybrid, you get the exact tree and fruit that you took the clipping from. Think of it this way, the seedling (or rootstock) stops growing upward but continues to grow below the ground producing the root system. The cutting (or scion, or budwood) continues to grow upward. So if you graft a Hass cutting onto a seedling grown form a Wadlin seed you wind up with a Hass avocado tree that produces Hass avocados.
      I apologize because I keep giving you homework assignments but here's another vid that explains all the above in more detail: th-cam.com/video/jlZ-MVwayQU/w-d-xo.html
