So I just pruned mine after about a month of debating and mine only had leaves at the top so I was really worried because that's where all of its leaves were but I did it anyways and it was just an ugly little stick poking out of a seed and nothing ever grew back for about 3 weeks... and then after e weeks it exploded and now is growing 2x faster than before and after about 2 weeks of growth it's already twice as big as it was before I pruned it. I'm thinking of doing it again because it grew a 2nd trunk and now is growing so tall so fast. I highly recommend pruning. Just be patient because it will take about a month for it to heal and start new growth. Just make sure you prune just above the node not below it I think that's where most people mess up is they cut below the node and the node is where the new growth comes from so if you cut that off that's where the new growth would have started so cut just above a node.

I live in Germany, and have a avocado too, it is in a special selv watering pot, with special soil. It live all time indoor on a east facing window. I have to water it every week with approximately 700ml water in witch I put 10-14 drops of fertilizer and 2 drops of trace elements for plants. The avocado is doing well for two years now (not shure). That's my experience and I want to share it. :)

I have an avocado tree that I've never pruned (I was afraid to). It had grown to seven feet twice. The first time the top bent over about 4 feet from the bottom. Another limb has grown from the bend of the top and is again above the curtains. It is from the pit and about six years old. I would like to prune it, but where? There are no leaves on the original 4 foot pit stem. I live in zone 7 and am afraid it's too cold too long with too little sun to plant outside.

@@RitaMcswain I'm not an expert, but if the plant try to grow, my avocado tends to grow for a while and then do nothing for a while, if it in a growing season you can cut it basically everywhere, but the plant decided were it want to grow a new branch... Yep. Pruned mine for the first time since I grew it from a seed. There are actually 8 plants now. What started as an experiment is now an obsession. LOL
I took the clipping and shoved it into the dirt with the seed and stem. Maybe it will root? We'll see.
Living in the Pacific Northwest of USA the plants will have to be indoors. Even then, the south/west window ledge is currently 61F/16C while it is 39F/4C outside. My room is 66F/19C. So I have some of the plants under a growlight that gets the surrounding air temps to 72F/22C.
Thank you for the tip about the dampness of the soil. I have them all in those self-watering pots with the wick that seems to bring up way too much water as the soil is constantly damp. I guess I will just stop putting so much water in the reservoir and will move them to different pots when I can.

Very nice video. My indoor plants had a problem with chlorine, lead and other contaminants in my city water. Buying distilled water cost too much, so I bought a Brita water pitcher that filters out chlorine, lead, etc. It cost me less than $25 usd and filters about 300 gallons a year before I need to buy a $15 replacement filter. My plants are less stressed and its easier to control my fertilizer use.

As long as you still have a node and the stem is still somewhat green, it should be ok, I believe. The chlorophyll in the stem will help provide energy to the node to grow. So if you don’t have leaves but the stem is still green then the node should be ok.

Thanks for making this video. I’m also emotionally attached to my avocado plant and I know I should prune it but I grew it from seed and only 6 months or so later it’s like one meter tall with a fairly thick stem! But no branches which is what I want.
I’m just thankful because I think I’ve done the opposite of what every avocado tree expert advises up to this point and the plant is flourishing. I have it in just regular potting soil mixed with compost. I water it from below so I doubt the soil ever really dries out. I recently had to transplant it to a new pot because it’s already outgrown the current one. Just hoping it continues to flourish and make nice healthy branches.

When I first pruned it after a couple weeks some new buds started emerging all over the plant. I was excited because I thought that I was going to have 4-5 new branches but what ended up happening is one of the branches became the new dominant main stem and the other branches never really grew. One grow about 3 inches and produced a couple leaves but that was it. After about 2-3 months the plant is now almost 2 meters tall and it stopped growing upwards for the time being and started putting it's energy into growing some actual real branches (3 so far).

Corrections to your video: Avocado trees are not just originally from Mexico. They are also from Guatemala and the West Indies, which make up the 3 types of avocado lineages out there (plus hybrids). If you squish an avocado leaf and it doesn't smell like anise then it's likely not from a Mexican lineage. They can absolutely grow and produce well in partial shade, not just full sun, and they do love water, contrary to your advice. What they need is well drained soil, not dry soil. That's a huge misconception. Also, avocados do not like to be hot all the time. That's silly. In fact, they will get sunburn on their trunk if they are pruned and not given some protection until they get used to the sun again. There are avocados cultivars available that can handle down to 15 degrees F or -9 C.

I've just grown my very first avocado tree from pit! It's grown up to 8 Inches so far.
My main concern right now is that I live in Canada. Should I prune soon or is it too close to the cold Autumn months now and I should wait until Spring at this point? Should I pot it in soil soon and before the pruning?

Growing mine in a pint of water as I saw a video about growing from seed in damp tissue and a ziplock bag and then to a jar of water but had no idea where to go from there. It's now about 14" in height two tiers of leaves and a few baby leaves on the stem and further growth at the top through stem. It literally has no soil so I had to chuckle when you said they don't like much water 😂😅🫣 Maybe I should experiment with this and see how much water becomes too much without soil 🤭

I do have a question/concern: I have an avocado tree that was about 6in (recommended height for first pruning per my research) and I cut it back to 3in per research recommendations. Now it stopped growing. I'm not seeing any leaf or root growth and there's also no root rot that I can see. What do I do to keep it growing and alive? Any thoughts on why it's growth was stunted? Any thoughts from yall is VERY appreciated!

    • @GoodGrowing

It's probably taking some time to recuperate from the stress of the chop. Depending where you live, it might also just be waiting while it's winter. Since it's the beginning of spring now it's possible that the increase in light and heat will help give it the push to grow again. good luck!

      @GoodGrowing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@urielrobles5234 planting it in soil might help give it some more nutrients. If you plan on keeping it in water more long term, I suggest using some hydroponic fertiliser. Either way, the nutrient boost will hopefully help it spring into growth!
