      So I just pruned mine after about a month of debating and mine only had leaves at the top so I was really worried because that's where all of its leaves were but I did it anyways and it was just an ugly little stick poking out of a seed and nothing ever grew back for about 3 weeks... and then after e weeks it exploded and now is growing 2x faster than before and after about 2 weeks of growth it's already twice as big as it was before I pruned it. I'm thinking of doing it again because it grew a 2nd trunk and now is growing so tall so fast. I highly recommend pruning. Just be patient because it will take about a month for it to heal and start new growth. Just make sure you prune just above the node not below it I think that's where most people mess up is they cut below the node and the node is where the new growth comes from so if you cut that off that's where the new growth would have started so cut just above a node.

    I live in Germany, and have a avocado too, it is in a special selv watering pot, with special soil. It live all time indoor on a east facing window. I have to water it every week with approximately 700ml water in witch I put 10-14 drops of fertilizer and 2 drops of trace elements for plants. The avocado is doing well for two years now (not shure). That's my experience and I want to share it. :)

      I have an avocado tree that I've never pruned (I was afraid to). It had grown to seven feet twice. The first time the top bent over about 4 feet from the bottom. Another limb has grown from the bend of the top and is again above the curtains. It is from the pit and about six years old. I would like to prune it, but where? There are no leaves on the original 4 foot pit stem. I live in zone 7 and am afraid it's too cold too long with too little sun to plant outside.

      @@RitaMcswain I'm not an expert, but if the plant try to grow, my avocado tends to grow for a while and then do nothing for a while, if it in a growing season you can cut it basically everywhere, but the plant decided were it want to grow a new branch... In my experience, dont touch the roots and everything will be fine, but I'm also very afraid of pruning therefore I cut of the very young branches, and let the plant do it's thing

    Very nice video. My indoor plants had a problem with chlorine, lead and other contaminants in my city water. Buying distilled water cost too much, so I bought a Brita water pitcher that filters out chlorine, lead, etc. It cost me less than $25 usd and filters about 300 gallons a year before I need to buy a $15 replacement filter. My plants are less stressed and its easier to control my fertilizer use.

      As long as you still have a node and the stem is still somewhat green, it should be ok, I believe. The chlorophyll in the stem will help provide energy to the node to grow. So if you don’t have leaves but the stem is still green then the node should be ok.

    Yep. Pruned mine for the first time since I grew it from a seed. There are actually 8 plants now. What started as an experiment is now an obsession. LOL
    I took the clipping and shoved it into the dirt with the seed and stem. Maybe it will root? We'll see.
    Living in the Pacific Northwest of USA the plants will have to be indoors. Even then, the south/west window ledge is currently 61F/16C while it is 39F/4C outside. My room is 66F/19C. So I have some of the plants under a growlight that gets the surrounding air temps to 72F/22C.
    Thank you for the tip about the dampness of the soil. I have them all in those self-watering pots with the wick that seems to bring up way too much water as the soil is constantly damp. I guess I will just stop putting so much water in the reservoir and will move them to different pots when I can.

    My avocado grew to 2feet outside this summer in an entirely shady garden...just stuck a pit in a Begonia pot and after a few months, I have a 2 foot tall plant with 8 med sized leaves on top and 6 new leaves budding out now. I really don’t want to prune it...I’d only have about 3 leaves left...I have 3 more started so will definitely prune these when they’re not too tall...I have mine in a very hot and sunny South facing window and noticed two of my leaves are getting a darker color...right now they’re light green, not deep green...I’ll give it morning sun but dapped afternoon sun and see how it does...very exciting to discover this plant in my garden...may try to Bonsai one, or two, of them...love your videos....thanks...Pat

    Thanks for making this video. I’m also emotionally attached to my avocado plant and I know I should prune it but I grew it from seed and only 6 months or so later it’s like one meter tall with a fairly thick stem! But no branches which is what I want.
    I’m just thankful because I think I’ve done the opposite of what every avocado tree expert advises up to this point and the plant is flourishing. I have it in just regular potting soil mixed with compost. I water it from below so I doubt the soil ever really dries out. I recently had to transplant it to a new pot because it’s already outgrown the current one. Just hoping it continues to flourish and make nice healthy branches.

      @matthewkoveleski9131 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zarahya6123 Yeah the stem is getting thicker. It's probably similar to my index finger in thickness. When I first pruned it after a couple weeks some new buds started emerging all over the plant. I was excited because I thought that I was going to have 4-5 new branches but what ended up happening is one of the branches became the new dominant main stem and the other branches never really grew. One grow about 3 inches and produced a couple leaves but that was it. After about 2-3 months the plant is now almost 2 meters tall and it stopped growing upwards for the time being and started putting it's energy into growing some actual real branches (3 so far).

    • @zarahya6123
      @zarahya6123 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewkoveleski9131 wow, that’s incredible!! 2 meters?! You must have found a hulk seed lol! I had one last year but my cat broke the stem off when it was ~15 cm, after that it only grew a new stem up along the side with two leaves on top. It got to about ~30 cm and then it stopped growing, the stem was also very skinny, maybe 0.5 cm in width.. Idk what happened, but after a few months without any growth I threw it out.. It never got any leaves further down the stem either. It looked so sad.. I hope my new ones (I have 6 seeds in water atm) will be a little more lively, since I’m going to attempt to bonsai a few of them :)

    Growing mine in a pint of water as I saw a video about growing from seed in damp tissue and a ziplock bag and then to a jar of water but had no idea where to go from there. It's now about 14" in height two tiers of leaves and a few baby leaves on the stem and further growth at the top through stem. It literally has no soil so I had to chuckle when you said they don't like much water 😂😅🫣 Maybe I should experiment with this and see how much water becomes too much without soil 🤭

    help I’m like you i was so excited to grow my plant from seed ❣️I don’t have the best lighting and i don’t get direct light from my window..it seems to love being by my 20 gal fish tank and that small light and i’m worried that if i move it closer to the window( it’s across the room from the window) that it will feel colder….i just don’t want to disturb it it it’s good where it’s at…ugh I’m in love with it❣️❣️

    Fill a gallon jug with tap water, and let it sit for 24 hours opened. The chemicals they treat it with will diminish dramatically. It is not perfect, but it helps!

    Water distiller off Amazon was super cheap and what I use. Hit it hard and it can make 6 gallons in a day. I live in an rv, so they don’t take up a bunch of space and it’ll pay for it’s self in not time. 😁

    First nice video. I started growing an my first avocado plant two years ago, and became too scared of cutting it back. So, I allowed it to grow taller. Plus, I had it in a big pot too big for it's size and no drained holes, my plant was doing good until it becomes too tall, the stems brown and leaves where Browning at the ends. I do have a question about reviving a avocado plant, can it be revived by re potting?
    I'm starting off freshly now, with cactus soil with a well drained plant pot.

    Question! I just got one avocado plant and you can tell it has never been pruned because there's only one thin stem with three leaves on top. So can I prune it even if it doesn't have leaves on the bottom?

    I started growing an Avocado plant with my mum when I was 11. It is 10 years old now and it is way taller than 2 meters! It reaches the ceiling and has to bend because of this. It was indoors the whole time. I love the big Avocado! :)

    Hey Emma, thank you for your video! I have a quick question. So we have an avocado plant, and we’ve never pruned it 😂. Now it’s 4 feet tall and it’s got a single stem for 2.5 feet and two branches both for 1.5 feet. We don’t know what to do and if we should prone it now. Any advice? Thank you!

      No problem! So glad you found it helpful! Yes you can defo prune it now and it shouldn't be an issue. You may not see much new growth until it gets a bit warmer but that's totally fine. Good luck!

    hey i have a question, can you help me? i pruned my now 6 month old avocado nearly 2 months ago and i didn’t kill it thankfully, one node became red and started growing into a branch with 5 growing leaves now, however i saw a second node, at the top, 1mm before the cut, growing too but it stopped growing (i figured there wasn’t enough stem left for it to grow, cut mine too short for the second branch to form :(( ) however i heard after pruning your avocado should kinda start growing into a Y shape (so two new branches) , instead i only got one, but i’m afraid if i start pruning that branch for new growth, it’ll only grow on that side of the plant and nothing will grow on the other since there is nothing to prune. what do i do? how do i balance it out? start over? or would a second pruning kill the entire stem since my avocado really put a lot of energy in that new branch (there’s not super much sun now, winter) . HELP😭 i want an even bushy tree, how do i activate other nodes without cutting the entire stem again, it’s still green and young similar to the plant in your video!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm im sure you could prune it again from the main stem and it would probably be okay. Avocado plants are meant to be pruned so my gut says it will be okay! best of luck :)

      By the way, today I transplanted my avocado from water to pot, because the leaves was brown and I kept him in my room instead outside, i felt sorry for him, so I transplanted, brought to sun, and hopefully it does not get shock too much. I do not know what will I do when cooler weather comes, I'm from Lithuania, so climate isn't the best for this plant:)

    I've just grown my very first avocado tree from pit! It's grown up to 8 Inches so far.
    My main concern right now is that I live in Canada. Should I prune soon or is it too close to the cold Autumn months now and I should wait until Spring at this point? Should I pot it in soil soon and before the pruning?

    What do you do when there arent any leaves at the bottom of the stem? I have a pretty tall avocado plant with some huge leaves at the very top, but there are only like 3 very small leaves at the bottom.
    I love your video's! And thanks for all the tips :)

    • @alessiad1430
      @alessiad1430 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The leaves on the bottom grow first as the plant gets taller leaves sprout at the top, so that will never be a problem. You still have leaves at the bottom so you can still cut don’t worry it will be fine. (:

    Do you have any recent avocado plant updates?? I used your paper towel to toothpick method and have a beautiful little avocado tree with 9 leaves! I was thinking about planting it in soil (it’s been in water for about 7 months) but then half the pit broke off! I’m afraid to plant it now because if it dies, I won’t know if it’s because I planted it or because half the pit fell off. Do you know if the plants shed the pit after a while? I’d assume eventually they’d have to for the trunk to get any bigger, but I’m nervous about my next move! Would love some advice if you have any!!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually just decided to get rid of my avo plants as they weren't bringing me as much joy anymore. They were living fine in soil and one of them the pit shrivelled up and it still grew fine. I wouldn't worry too much about the pit breaking off. I feel like that is normal. If I were you, I'd pot up in soil :)

    You could try to root the top. You may need rooting hormone maybe, but as long as its still young growth without bark it may possibly root.

    Hello! 👋 I love your care tips! (Very helpful) :) But, I actually have an issue with my plant. It is very tall and skinny, and the leaves sprout then dry out. 😔How do I stop that? Also, my avacado plant is very tall and skinny with no branches, and I want to prune it to encourage growth. In what area of the plant should I prune it? Because I don’t want to mess up, I have been growing it for 1 year. 🌱 Thank you!

      @GoodGrowing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I haven't done this myself, but I've seen people prune theirs so it's like 6 inches above the pit with no leaves. Not sure what happens after that but as long as you keep caring for it, I'd think it should eventually sprout again.

    Heya! Also it 'can' produce fruit if grown from a polyembryonic variety. You can know which one is a clone of the parent by seeing which one is the most vigorous and strongest growing one out of all :)
